Cpu usage when playing FF7?
« on: 2010-08-14 15:26:25 »
Just a little question i wanted to ask you guys, what is your CPU usage whenever ff7 is on? Mine is always at around 50%, which I think isn't normal...

my is also around 50%, and for some reason ff7 finds the need to use a crapload of memory as well.

It would be helpful to know what CPUs you're using and how much memory you have. If you both have a Pentium 4 and 512 MB of RAM, we don't have to worry. If you're using overclocked i7 920s and 8GB of RAM, there's clearly a problem.

I would assume that FF7 is polling one of a two-core system for all available cycles, including idles.

I've just checked and I think you're right. I'm using an i5 750 and my CPU usage is 25%. It's using about 63MB of RAM on the field and between 90 and 110 in battle.

Isn't that a shame, for a Windows 95 game. Mines at 13~18% with about 31mb of ram and I gots a i7 975 EE... ???

i have a quad core phenomII @ 3.0 ghz and 4 gb of ram , i suspect that you have some settings tweaked or something else responcible for that usage, FF7 uses ~3% on field and no more then 16% in battle. those are both far from using a full core to do the work.

Since you're the forum's Linux guy, I'm assuming that you're using WINE. Would that make any difference?

The only thing that will make FF7 use less CPU is turning on vsync. If its off FF7 will just keep spinning in a loop until its time to draw the next frame. With vsync on, depending on how lucky you are it will spin a bit less. Also, a game using all the CPU power available to it is not at all uncommon, there's nothing "wrong" with FF7 in that sense.

it might.. but shouldn't make much of one. the speeds should be about the same,

edit: yes i have Vsync on

I don't know about these looping operations in detail. It's possible that WINE is smart enough to recognize them as non-operations, or recognizes a specific breed of system call as null.

i don't think that happens cause that could become an issue when trying to make somethings compatible. im not sure exactly what happends when i run it in wine. but somethings do run faster/better in wine. Depending on the version of Windows the OP has maybe its just better @ pretending to be XP then his copy. there are im sure a bunch of other factors that cause this since *nix is not windows its not even remotely the same under the hood, aside from what MS has "borrowed" over the years.like the network stack for XP or Maximizeing windows on screen edges. (i.e"aero snap") from KDE4 (yes we had it first)

Wine or no wine doesn't really make a difference, the only thing that will make FF7 yield for any considerable amount of time is vsync. Its possible that vsync works a whole lot better in linux though, allowing more CPU to be spared.
