Gameplay / Re: ARMs's damage limit mod for NTSC PSX
« on: 2012-11-14 21:16:17 »
The link in UGerstl's post leads to nada. Could someone upload the files (again)? This also serves as an excellent lesson as to why I should save these things on my backup drive. :|

Insane theory of the day: Aali hasn't released his new driver because he's been hired by SquareEnix to polish up and fix the PC port they're coming out with. He can't tell us about it because he's signed a non-disclosure agreement.

I know the kernel is compressed, but the connection didn't occur to me until I retired for the evening. Yeah, I'm derpin' it.

I don't know how to move files around on the ISO, nor do I know how to properly edit Yamada to reflect my changes (Pointers, right?).

On an unrelated note, Libre is quite dandy. What I >love< is that most of the utility programs work for both the PSX and PC versions.

I've been attempting to use WallMarket to edit the PSX kernel (Simple things, adding/removing slots for weapons/armor, altering start-up stats), and I've run into something:

Whenever the kernel is saved, its size is slightly changed regardless of whether or not there were any changes (According to CDMage; my hex editor says otherwise). When the kernel is larger than "default", this makes it impossible to insert back into the game disk without truncating it and (Probably) causing all sorts of problems. The size of the kernel objectively increases the more changes I make, but I don't know why adding slots to equipment would require more space. Aren't the bytes for these things already reserved?

Is there a workaround to this issue? Or am I missing something so totally obvious I should be ashamed for even asking?

Edit: To answer my own line of questioning: No. The kernel does not have the bytes reserved for things such as stat bonuses and slots on weapons. Adding new slots or stat bonuses takes up space. This explains why the kernel is increasing in size.

You seem to have an attitude problem, champ. Now, I'm happy to agree that Dan's response was understandable - after all, the 'strongest' thing I ever said to him was "Whoa, calm down" - and I've been as guilty of snapping at clueless newbies as anyone - but I'm not happy to accept your tone. You're trying to escalate a fairly minor exchange into a full-blown argument, and that's not something I'm going to allow as a moderator.

So drop it. Now.

Wasn't my intent to come off as an ass. I'm sorry for giving that impression.

It'll be lulzy when some guy asks his question over and over, then starts messaging random people asking why he's being ignored. :p

They're not being a 'n00b' at all. Granted, they should have consulted the FAQ before posting, but I can see why someone might not. After all, there's no way to know what data an FAQ contains until it has been read, and that requires a commitment of time a user can't judge worthwhile. This is the reason that documentation always fails - not because people are stupid, but because they're employing unfortunate-but-necessary heuristics that win out in the vast majority of circumstances.

It's so rare I yell at my monitor in disbelief. But, here we are. I, too, can see why someone won't read a FAQ or a read me, or instructions, or remember to bring a coat with them to the arctic circle. That does not mean the behavior should be tolerated. Let's follow the thought process involved in this specific circumstance:

1: They won't spend five seconds searching for "virus". They won't do this even through the first paragraph of the thread mentions a FAQ.

1a: If they don't search the FAQ because they've determined beforehand their problem won't be mentioned, they're assuming things. Their problem is unique, the author hasn't made good documentation, etc.

2: They will spend several minutes composing a post asking a question that's already been answered in the FAQ they refused to check due to one of the above reasons.

3: They've determined it's easier and quicker for everyone to ask a question and make someone else spend their time and effort helping them.

This tells me the person's judgement is garbage and/or they don't value other people's time and effort. The n00b label fits. As far as I'm concerned, they don't deserve to be treated nicely. If punishment is too harsh, then they should just be ignored; they don't deserve help as they've done nothing to help themselves first.

<_<

I'm channeling the Obesebear of old, aren't I?

wut

No, Bosola, that's not a reasonable thing to tell him. He's spent a tremendous amount of time working on the overhaul, and even more time making an easy to understand FAQ designed to service those who would use it. Someone so lazy and stupid that they can't even be bothered to read THE FIRST POST in this entire thread doesn't deserve to be treated nicely. It's not like it's hard to find information, considering the first paragraph tells you where to find the FAQ.

I understand repetitive questions popping up when the answer isn't already posted somewhere obvious. This is not one of those cases. Something stupid was asked and DLPB acted accordingly.

Anyway, it should be expected of everyone to have basic reading comprehension, common courtesy, and common sense on these boards. If they fall grossly short of those expectations because they're a n00b, the violating post should be deleted and they should be warned.

1. Retranslation Project Revision 002. Up to Shin-Ra Building (and other maps are done.  34% game dialogue).

I request that this be optional, please. Strange as this may sound, I prefer the original game script.

Uh...wow.

Good game, man. I guess I'll wait for Aali's next release. And then...minigames. Ooooh yeah!

Off the top of my head, you're having problems because your video card is old, and integrated. There may be nothing that can be done besides obtaining a better video card.

Completely Unrelated / Re: The Dragon Quest Series
« on: 2011-12-17 21:36:53 »
Fairly sure this belongs in Completely Unrelated, but...

I've always enjoyed the Dragon Warrior series, especially III and IV. Solid gameplay that improved greatly with their remakes. Besides better graphics, there's less grinding, better translations (Well, fan translation in III's case) and an overall more condensed, enjoyable experience. More to do, too, with the bonus dungeons.

I wish more modern RPGs followed the Dragon Warrior series' example and had short battle animations, quick loading of whatever, and fast battles.

For instance, I'm playing Legend of Dragoon at the moment. Agonizingly slow loading of scenes/battles, long battle animations, and grinding that is made worse because of the other aforementioned problems. Ugh. Thank God for emulation. <3 that fast forward button.

We're not terrible, we're the internet.

It's unlikely, and that's being generous, for a proxy to cough up the same IP for two different people. Especially since said proxy is being provided by a program that claims high levels of security. Wouldn't be very secure if it handed out duplicate IPs, right?

Validation is a pretty good idea, I agree. Instruct the applicant, in the rules, to include an obscure/archaic/uncommon word in their explanation of why they want to be a member. "Forsooth", "Parched" or similar - This is to act like a filter. If they won't bother reading the rules and including the word...why do you want to deal with them when they're on the forums?

Slip the word in the middle somewhere, and occasionally edit the rules to include a new word to trip up people attempting to sneak back in after they were banned.

This topic = Lulz.

So how many years is MXSter banned for, now? 3-4?

22
Just a guess, eh? I dunno, 32MB was pretty hardcore 15 years ago. <_<

23
I'm up to about 600KB now. It doesn't take too long to go faster.

24
I'll lend myself to seeding after I've downloaded, as well. Better backgrounds are totally worth it.

First thoughts: "Oh wow, it's downloading pretty fast. 500KB!"

Then: "Wait...that's not KB. That's bytes. BYTES."

Oh snap!

Yar.
