The waifu background mods have been available for years for all FF games though. The only difference here is that an AI has learned how to paint.
If anything, mods like this will help sell the game! It brings more attention to the games and it's never looked better.

I mean, I bought the steam edition JUST to use this mods.

Edit: Looks like you're getting some attention Ze_PilOt :)

Just had to post this. Look at how beautiful the background are!
I'm also using a super light reshade that does very little, just some slight bloom and slight increase in saturation.

This might not be the place to ask but I've tried to reinstall Memoria several times and it seems like its stuck on superspeed mode. Battles are atleast twice as fast, and I suspect everything else is twice as fast as well.

Btw, the backgrounds look even better now! I'm really impressed, it's like a whole new game!

Aha! That makes sense :) I'll just disable widescreen for now.
I've noticed you seem to mean that this mod of yours is more of a guide for other to improve upon right? Every background looks great as far as I've seen. Process seems to work great too, masking looks fine (depends on how much of a perfectionist you are). I do think satsuki's masking looks a tad better. But he's doing some manual work, and you wanna stay away from manual work like the plague :D It's just not part of your philosophy regarding the pipeline you've developed.

I'd think your work could be very much appreciated on FF7 and 8 as well, just giving the other modders a hand at making their lives a bit easier.

I might have misunderstood something, but how exactly does the widescreen support for Memoria actually work?
My resolution is set to 1920x1080, but the results are like this:

Edit: Seems as though there's an issue with Memoria in conjunction with the latest HD backgrounds mods

7
It works! So now we can actually have HD backgrounds and Memoria working at the same time. Now I just need to figure out how to get the scaled battle UI working. I was under the impression that it was already packaged with Memoria, but it's not turned on by default at least.

I'm already using AngelWings backgrounds pack, so I guess it's just a matter of replacing files. I'm guessing this pack only includes the backgrounds from the video? Luckily I just got the ragnarok on disk3 so I can just check out Balamb :)

This is looking phenomenal blippyp! Masks are really good too! You have a version people can use to try it out?

10
Maybe create and share a google sheet or something where we can document bugs and errors? I'm gonna start a new playthrough and make notes on the way.

11
Sweet! There are a few other mods too that isn't compatible with each other. Seems like there's some issues with the csharp.dll file, where each modder compiles their own file to work specific with their mod. While it needs adjustments to be able to work with multiple mods.

We sure could use a decent mod manager for FF9

Edit: Where do I report errors? Just loaded up a save from Cleyra, I see a few issues right away. It's a real troublesome area though, with a lot of masks.
But the backgrounds in general looks pretty darn good

12
This isn't by any chance compatible with Memoria?

Looks damn good! It might be a bit too aggressive on the bottom though, but the overall details are beautiful. The missile looks great, as well as the speakers and the wood. What kind of images are you training it with? The FF9 model was trained with a variety of concept art which has a similar art direction. But not too sure if it would fit FF8 though.

Love the clean cuts! Looks almost manually done

15
But ff7 is realy different from ff9 because of the color palette is realy restrained in ff7, so ff7 quality base is lower than ff9 (and the quality is not the same on all ff7 bakground too...).
Sounds like you're really meticulous in your work, I like it! I've noticed FF8 has these color palette issues as well, my guess is that both FF7 and 8 have now bit color palettes, compared to FF9. But these are still looking as good as it gets!

16
I really hope you guys who are working on upscaling projects for FF7-8 and 9 are cooperating with your techniques and findings. The user who's upscaling FF9 backgrounds is using his own data training model, trained specifically for FF9 and artwork which is similar. And the results are muuuch better than ESRGAN with Manga dataset.

17
Jesus Christ!! Amazing work! Holy shit, we're gonna have a renaissance with background upscaling mods for FF7, 8 and 9! My body is ready!

Just a question, in order to actually edit these alpha layers, would I need specific software to do that? I've noticed the image files are in a weird blocky format, I guess that's what the hashmaps are for?
I was thinking, I'm quite efficient with Photoshop, as I'm an artist myself. And I don't really mind monkeywork like that, manually touching up tiny details :)
Alteast touching up on the worse alpha maps in specific scenes

That looks really good! But it looks like it always has issues with diagonal edges though. There's never a straight line. Wonder if one can code the behavior of these parameters.
But it has to be automated at some point, so it might be wise to not obsess over things you can't really control :D Haha

Is it possible to manually touch everything up? I understand that it might take years to do, but is it possible? :p

Btw, over at the Angelwing thread on the upscaled backgrounds, FanSH posted the backgrounds slightly scaled up and pixellated. That makes everything look much more authentic. Even with the waifu upscaling. Have you tried that out with these?

Spoiler: show

These look great! Much more authentic :)

Holy fuuuuck that looks great! :-o
Regarding the masking, Im' asuming the blocky edges comes from the auto generator? The waifu packs also have them, but they're kinda rounded off.
But I actually think it looks better with these clear blocks, instead of the HQ2X looking edges.

Is it possible to manually touch up the alpha edges? Cause this is an issue in all games with prerendered backgrounds.
It's also an issue with the other waifu upscaled packs. Some areas have really bad masking. Much much worse than I can see here

22
Just gotta say, this latest version looks really good! Don't notice the waifu too much

23
Have you tried denoising the frames using waifu, and then upscale the thing with ESRGAN?

How about you put the work you've already done into a repo, and let other's have a go?
My thoughts on the backgrounds which have NPCs around, the best thing would probably be for someone to extract the 3d models of those characters and manually put them into the scene.

I feel it's a shame to put the entire project on hold just because of these scenes. I get it that you don't feel it's up to par (and it's not), but other's may have some ideas on how to solve the problem :)

25
Some guy extracted the assets from the game and added some really nice waifu filtering.
For some reason, waifu filters work so much better on this game than on FF7 and 8. The painted feeling kinda works.
