You can pick up Dragon Force from a Dark Dragon in the Northern Cave on Disc 3.

Yeah, I knew about that. I was speaking more for the time between leaving the Cliffs and reaching the North Cave. But perhaps it is already reasonable as it is; it's a hardcore difficulty mod after all.

I love the mod gjoerulv; it's been refreshing to play a JRPG with genuine difficulty. One possible tweak is to add the Blue Dragon enemy into some later areas in the game so one has the option to acquire dragon force if they happened to miss it in Gaea's Cliffs. I mostly played without a walkthrough so I was unaware that such a mandatory spell was available there. I ended up adding it in with Black Chocobo but it would be nice to have another opportunity for those that don't know the game inside out.

Troubleshooting / Re: Running FFVII in WINE (Linux)

I converted all of my FF7 cds into ISO images, and use this utility to mount and swap them.

This tool is different from others in that it actually works.

There are features of cds, like certain types of copy protection, that cannot be provided by simply mounting an image to a folder.
CDEmu works by not simply mounting the images to a folder and providing the files, but emulating a disk drive and a cd inserted into it.

Strangely, very few of the many guides I've seen around for mounting images in Linux acknowledge this.

Just thought I'd note that if you use Kranmer's DLL you only need to make one disc image for one disc, and don't need to do any disc swapping.

The open source drivers might be worth trying if your card is supported by R600g. Power management is still bad but I found that performance was better than Windows on my system. You'll need to force on full GPU frequency with a kernel patch if you have a laptop, though. In addition, it might be worth using the git version of Mesa so as to use the R600sb shader compiler. It might not be needed for this game, though; I didn't run comparison benchmarks. It speeds up pretty much all modern games, however.
