Strange.. I have nearly the same setup and didn't experience a crash..

Question: Do you use 1.02 and hardware mode? If not you may want to, and if you do you may want to get rivatuner and force 8bit palleted textures off.

Specs:
Windows XP Professional
1GB RAM
Geforce FX 5200 (DX8 version)
3GHz Pentium4

Sephiroth, what version of DirectX do you have? I know people who have experienced problems with 6 and 7. I use v.8 and have no problems.

I had that problem once before myself.

If I remember correctly, doing alt-enter while in game just before the submarine minigame worked (it should window the game).

A workaround for that is to play thru in Quarter Screen mode. At least, that was the solution in the past.

Another one that would sometimes solve it is to play in Basic sound Acceleration mode. That is...if the crash was related to sound. (To do that type dxdiag in "Run..." and go to the sound tab)

Quarter Sceen mode points to a video driver problem of some sort.

Sorry for bringing this thread back to life, but I need help. Quarter screen did not work for me on this problem. I am using Windows 10 and have used OpenGL and the Chocobo patch to get Final Fantasy 7 up and running. I even tried to download and install the old direct x 9 definitions to try to get the sub game to work. The odd thing is that the game will not go to quarter screen, even from the config menu. Any help here would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
