Possibly another forum move in progress...
« on: 2001-12-03 18:42:00 »
...this time it's a bit more serious, though. I have grown tired of constant switches between servers, with an unsure existence of this forum. I also really need to shape up my web site (it's not been updated for a year or two, damn it).

Therefore, I'm placing considerable thought into signing up for professional web hosting myself, instead of "leeching" off others. This will, however, place additional strain on my already poor economy, so I will still have ads to help finance the project. I might think of more ways to get money in later on.

Comments? I really need your opinions ^^

Just a note: I will not need any further tips for web hosting. I gladly accept tips on financing, though ^^. Ads, voluntary donations, involuntary donations...  :naughty:

Expect a quick and painless transfer to the new board location real soon.

Also, I'm still working on the new design. The new board will have a couple of new, more or less hidden features. Both the kind of stuff that makes you go "well yeah that's useful", and the stuff that makes you go "hehe, nice touch", and of course the stuff that makes you go "why on earth would anyone make such a thing?".

School's tough this time of year, so I can't work on it as much as I want to. I would've wanted the new design up and running before Christmas, and I hope I'll have at least *something* up by then...

Hey Qhimm... take as long as you need... I know how busy I am at college now... I don't have the time to do much in my "free time" anymore. And I know what you mean about trying to find somewhere to host sites for free. My website at Freedom To Surf has been down for about 3 weeks now  but I don't have the money to pay for a domain name and it's hard to find a server that a) has no ads, b) no bandwidth limit, c) cgi support which is free.

If I had DSL I'd be hosting Sephiroth3D.com from home, and Ohh... how sweet that would be. I'd even make room for the forums...

Again, if I had DSL... *sigh...*

I pity the fool who don't got broadband!

Oh, and make sure you know what you're doing when setting up a server with a Cable/DSL connection. Make it so your ISP will have a hard time detecting it (such as putting it on a strange port number for HTTP instead of the standard 80), or else you'll probably get in shit for violating the ToS (most highspeed ISPs say you can't run a server as part of the ToS agreement).

I thought that everybody in the western world can afford to have his own server running in livingroom. Looks like life is not like i imagined it.

Yeah, popups suck. I'd be happy to click away at the banners though to earn you some money. Oh and hey, take as much time as you like, I'm only in year 9 (13) and I already seem to have no spare time (pleeeaassee dont start with all that 'You wait till you get to college' crap).
I dont really know how to make money on the internet so I'm not much use here, but I'm sure you'll find something.

Heh-I'm working on one of my finals while reading this topic... :weep:

Try college and a mortgage.

I know that polykarbon's BBS has a way for those that want to contribute monitarily can do so-though that may just be a feature of ezboard.  I wouldn't mind contributing financially-maybe through paypal or some other means?

Paypal or the like is good (from my point of view, because I can *use* Paypal...)

Remembering that any donation system would have to be accessible from quite a number of countries of course ... I'm *very* strapped for cash at the moment (end of term...) but I'd be willing to contribute a quid here or there after Xmas  I'm sure we could get quite a few people to do that.

Well, if it's for the best then the forum move won't be a problem for me.  It seems that almost everyone here including me are occupied with college.  I could donate money, money is not such an issue to me when it comes to donate a few dollars.  Besides I'm expecting my financial aid check soon.

considering the member count (4800) you'd think it be a lot higher. (currently $22  :???: )
