Menu Reconstruction 004

Always read the information in the installer.

This is the Menu Reconstruction Mod for use with the original translation of the game.  It will correct the vast majority of alignment issues in the game.  The Re-translation Project version will come as part of the Re-translation Project Installer.

Needed:  1.02 Executable.  It does not matter if the exe has been altered.  The installer will not be able to update the old FF7.exe from the disc.  You will need 1.02 version exe installed in your game folder if you want to run the game with Aali's driver too.  The installer should now warn you if you do not have Aali's driver properly configured.

There were a few problems in modifying this from the re-translation version.  Mainly, the use of "Arrange" in the Materia menu meant it can't look as nice as it would otherwise with a smaller word like "Order".   I have used the word "Order" in this release.

Please note that there are technical limitations with the game which make it impossible to arrange all menus exactly how I would have liked.  Some values are linked, and sometimes moving certain objects will end up ruining another menu or causing another problem.  Sometimes the value itself has a cap on how large it can be, and other times, the text itself becomes the limiting factor.  All in all, this is pretty much the best I could do with the tools I was given.   I will take feedback into consideration.

The following are some examples:

We have not touched the debug menu, and have no plans to.

 Overall Progress-  Completed:  62/63 (98%)

Known Issues with 004

1.  We still have not located all of the values for making the menu transitions smooth again as they were in PSX version of the game.

2.  004 onwards only supports Team Avalanche graphics.

MGS4 ...words cannot describe the win

Because there wasn't any.

Played through 3 times, first was on normal, 2nd was a speed run and the third run though was on Big Boss Extreme after that I'd lost interest and MGO was a haven for campers and exploiters.

I bought my PS3 because of it, and then sold my PS3 because I got bored of it and the various other region locked games I couldn't play with friends(MGS4 included).

Amen same here :)  I really don't see what's great about MGS4.  It is just a generic shooter with a crap over bloated story relying on fanbase to see it through  (see FF13).

This thread now needs locking.  The project is complete  8) and a new thread for main release will be created tomorrow.

Translated version will come as a mandatory part of the Re-translation Project installer.

Non Translated version will get its own thread and installer.  There are a few things which we could not correct but 98% has been, and I am pretty damn happy with the overall change.  I will allow a period of testing before I release 002.  After that I will look at it one last time in 3 months.

It has been great working with Kranmer on this, and I will hopefully be able to suggest a few improvements to him when it comes to correcting alignment in the battle menu.

Thankyou :)

[number of changes from original exe:  around 7300 bytes.  i.e. 7300 changes in the hex editor.  I'd say manually altering one by one, probably around 2000-4000 ]

9404
MGS2 was a very good game for gameplay but the idea that MGS should be the only good game and we should be happy with it doesn't cut it for me.  They had plenty of time and money and if they can't beat a game that was on 2 CD's in 1998, they best quit.

The only thing I seem to hear about MGS4 is excuses for this that and the other.

9405
I edited the dialogue on the world map (as part of retranslation project) but I had to do it byte by byte with a hex editor.  The dialogue is found in world_us in a simple file 'mes' which has pointers.  Unfortunately, I haven't worked out out to resize the dialogue boxes...  that needs work.  Possibly the resize data is in the exe or in another file in world_us.lgp, it isn't in mes.

9406
Covarr, I am all for character development if it is good.  They got Meryl who wanted nothing more to do with war in MGS1 going with the comic relief guy "Johnny" and even had a WEDDING.  Call me nuts but that doesn't strike me as fun.  I would be happier pulling my teeth out with pliers, the dialogue was embarrassing, the plot a joke, and cut scenes lasting well over 15 minutes, even this ridiculous wedding....  I don't know how that can be fun.

9407
Of course it is working, have a look at the sales for MGS4 and FF13, I will give you a clue, they are mega successful and there is more to come.  I am not talking console war, I am talking successful games which are being successful purely on blind fanbase and graffix.  I remember when FF7,8,9,10 were amazing games in their own right with decent stories, now we have FF13 and all these cash in spin offs.  MGS4 was the ultimate graphic fest, blowing a 50GB blu ray disc.

I have been forced to play older games and the only thing on my list from newer consoles is Lost Odyssey.

9408
MGS4 was a turd.  I will post a long winded review (not really, more a rant, it is all it deserves) when I get the time.  MGS4 and FFXIII between them made me sell my PS3. I don't like where games are going with these new generation consoles, it seems to be graphic graphic graphic and the sad thing is, it's working.

9409
Sure, well, most end users will be Windows, so at least it is something...  It is just irritating to have to keep finding it, and yeah, the best way of all is to have an ini type file remember the last folder.  Simples :)

This will most likely not happen either since i have no way to correctly predict where ff7 is installed

Surely you can program your app to look at the registry value?  This will tell your app exactly where the game is installed.  Me and Kranmer did a similar thing with our installers.  You just have to make it look at the registry and at the correct value which is the path string.

HKLM/Software/square soft, inc. /Final Fantasy VII and AppPath  I think that's correct for 32bit windows.  You would need to look at another for 64bit.

This forum's primary purpose is to mod FF7, mostly to improve the game.  I have never been a fan of this section for obvious reasons (this place seems to be used a lot to just piss about or piss people off).  But, there needs to be some proper rules laid down and then everyone will know where they stand.  It doesn't matter to me much because I don't post here and seldom even look at the topics anymore.

I just think that people are missing the point about what Qhimm's is, and it isn't a generic fool around forum.  It serves a purpose.  I understand that not everyone can mod or contribute but there has to be some sort of limit on any offtopic section otherwise it just turns into spam and that doesn't exactly look good for the community.

Just my 2 cents.

The flash colours are decides by the game as far as I am aware.  In the exe is a little piece of code which decides colour.

I changed Thundera to Thundara, when I then use search for Thundera it crashes.  Thundera no longer exists and maybe because it doesn't find it there is some sort of bug?

Cheers :)8)

9416
Barrett says "Shi'" or somethin' at 1 point, and the end FMV has "Shit"  does this still appear?  I can't remember where else a "shit" occurs.

9417
It was made easy by the values which were chosen and yes they made it easy to cater to a general audience, and so that makes business sense.  They should have added a difficulty option.

Since they didn't others are doing it (and I will be soon enough too)

Well there are a few :P  the main one we cannot fix...  the equip menu, I would like to alter the weapon, protect, accessory words but there are no values for them, they have to be moved as one.  That's the biggest, the others are very small gripes :P

Glad you enjoy it though!

RELEASE BETA 3 - LAST CHANCE TESTERS

FF7 Menu Reconstruction Beta 3

As always back-up ff7.exe.

This is the last beta.  The next release will be the main release for this project and barring major updates from any large mistakes, this will be the final look for BOTH mods. (obviously the non translated version will retain original text)

So, if you are interested in this project for EITHER of the versions, you should download this and give serious feedback because this is your LAST CHANCE.

This beta is 95% what I would call "Finished".  Aside from feedback and numerous small tweaks which most of you won't even notice, this is done.

Just completed is the character naming screen, seen below.  Please see post 1 for the progress report.

9420
Then you are in trouble  This is wrong section...

9421
There are a few which are allowed.  The "Piss" remarks seem to be there and the "crap"  but I did notice 1 or 2 which were not censored in the PSX being censored in the PC.  It doesn't matter regardless because 90% of those swear words arent even meant to be there.

9422
Yeah... But since I love to have 32761 HP and 5692 MP, it's not possible !
And when I put higher costs with WM, it just reset...

256 MP = 1 MP
358 MP = 153 MP etc...

yes that's because of the 255 limit.  It will wrap around if you exceed it.  The limit is there because the variable used has a storage capacity of 0-255.

9423
Bosola is right, if the limit is 255 (and I think it is probably guaranteed to be) your real alternative then is to just adjust the costs elsewhere.

9424
Not sure if you have fixed this yet but it needs doing.  A lot of apps fail to do this and it is annoying:P

a.  When you have opened a save file, simply clicking "save" should automatically save the file you opened, not ask you to find the folder again and overwrite save files

b.  The app should navigate automatically to the save folder by default every time.

When I have time I may do a proper test of this program, so far I did notice 1 bug...  when you set the 'points to next level' to 1, in the game, it doesn't seem to actually level up when the 1 point is given in battle.  I am not sure if that is just my save or whether it is a proper bug.

One thing to be wary of, the small %, - and + characters need to be exact to the original placement. The last font wasn't and that resulted in my menu reconstruction being out...

The small %, + and - appear on the Materia menu, when viewing certain Materia stats (Look at barrier materia and Magic Plus materia under both Equip effect and Ability list ).
