General Discussion / Re: Over leveled at this point?
« on: 2010-07-20 09:27:38 »
If you mean in terms of balance, if you do anything optional at all for the sake of leveling or becoming more powerful in any fashion, you'll be overleveled. If you don't and just charge hard and fast through the main story with zero grinding and zero optional shit gathering, there's still a good chance you'll be overleveled.

Really it's a tremendously easy game.

I came to this thread excited because the very word music always arouses me sexually, although after seeing "Linkin Park" and then, for some reason, bothering to check out those links, I coughed up a ball of spite.  :|

That sounds more negative than I intended, or I guess more sincere. Less hyperbolic?

Gad damn the colouring of the face looks like polished plastic to me, maybe if there was slightly more detail, like, less perfect skin.
I called it action figurey before but really it's just, I would expect that to stand out while playing so man I, well, am bothered.

I am very impressed with the work on the clothing so far though.

I never use this kind of items in FFXII except for a really hard boss though.
So never?

The same argument can be made about claims by the unholy alliance of Christfags and femnazis that pornography leads to rape and violence against women; the countries with the most porn and the most f*cked up porn have low levels of violence and serious sexual assault whereas the most sexually repressive are the most dangerous for women.
What sooner came to mind for me was how there's a very strong positive correlation between religiosity and violence by location, although for at least two reasons that's a bit less comparable.

If I had to argue that games *do* make people violent, I would argue that when gamers get frustrated for failing at games they might take out their anger using violence towards people, or something. But in this case it's the gamer having anger management, not really the video game's fault... cuz I don't think anyone in their right mind would let a game piss them off so much that they'd want to hurt or kill someone o.o *shrugs*
Not to mention, this would make Kaizo Marior or IWBTG about a million times more likely to cause violence than GTA.

I am like this in almost everything. I hate using consumable items even if it's the last battle of the game.
Yeah this is me. I don't think I used a single megapotion, megalixir, or elixir in FFX.

That is the worst reason I have ever heard and exhibits such a fundamental misunderstanding of PC gaming that, much as I would genuinely like to explain what's wrong with that, I really don't know where to begin.

Mind you neither interpretation is necessarily true in any objective way. I mean both are consistent with canon, and I would ask that you consider http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeathOfTheAuthor
consistency with canon does not give someone permission to wildly speculate. like matrix bible or A-team shakespeare.

And I would ask that you consider http://squallsdead.com/

I was saying that what actually explicitly happens in FF8 after the end of disc 1 is a tad implausible in accordance with rules established in disc 1, and personal circumstances at the time of Squall's supposed death. I did differentiate, and, um, this is the second time that you've made a big wall of text stemming from the misunderstanding of a single word, a wall of text that is therefore not a response to what I actually stated (or at least intended to state).

Doesn't work with Silent Hill 1 because of Silent Hill 3.
For everything else, if we assume everything that happens prior to the potential point of death to establish the tendencies of the characters and the rules of the universe, none of those really create any in-universe implausibility, with a noticeable shift in themes and relationships, following someones possible death.

Yes I know the idea that Square Enix intended that Squall was dead is a lot more improbable in real life but as long as an interpretation is consistent with all established canon it's not really incorrect, regardless of the authors intentions. At least that's what's generally taught in literary analysis (or we could just say that reading it as Squall's Dead is a derivative work with effectively the same script), and gafjugh the point is I think there's at least a solid enough case to not call this arbitrary or nonsense.

Hmm, consider this. If we imagine that all of this to somehow be real (let's say, I dunno, we're in the same universe 100000 years in the future and there's this technology that will let us view the world through one persons perspective at one point in time then it will explode for some reason, and we pick Squall for the length of FF8, for some reason), and we have all this evidence before us, the Squall's Dead theory would seem a lot more sound, in that, in accordance with everything established in disc 1, it provokes a great deal less implausibility.

Of course, if it were real, my final stance would be that Squall was more likely than not dead but that ultimately we don't know and, as such, I would not state that I "believe" either possibility.

To be perfectly honest, this creates the only perspective through which I appreciate the games plot. And since I'm much less concerned with proof when it comes to fictional realities, I shall forever more insist to myself that this was the original intention. On the other hand, while disc 1 didn't really piss me off, I still didn't enjoy it much, and it being Squall's fantasy doesn't really make the hours of exposition more enjoyable as they happen, so I probably won't play through it again. This "revelation" shall only serve to leave me with memories from which I can gain something positive, and not just memories that leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah I didn't actually intend to continue bringing that up constantly that was just a, uh, something. Whatever. Shut up Scott.
I love how FFVII, the game that created the modern JRPG, still has the longest spell animation of any spell from any game ever. Come on devs, you've had 15 years and two generations of new consoles to do something more ridiculous than Super Nova. Just don't make the boss use it every 5 minutes if it's going to be, well, 5 minutes long, next time.

FF8 is terrible you fken. I will insist on this every time someone says otherwise.
FF7 was great in itself but it sort of was the game that killed JRPG's.

Woah, suddenly calling me a name while saying something is terrible sounds like something a 3rd grader would do. So Scotty, you must be under 13 so you should have your account deleted  oh, but if you're not then at least act like an adult on the board. There is a line of showing your opinion, being rude, and just being plan childish.

So you don't like FF8, ok. Doesnt make it a terrible game for the rest of us. In fact FF8 is my favorite final fantasy. Don't want to hear your arguments about it nor am I trying to convince you to like it. Just saying, respect the rest of us by just shutting up or polite criticism.

What would you call a good JRPG? FF4/FF6? Dragon Quests. It's all the same style stuff as other RPG's and Fantasy genre stuff. Sorry but I just can't have bread and butter 24/7.  I gotta have different stories then "hey a warrior wizard and priest set out to save the worlds crystals from the evil king and his demon overlord." unfortunantly it does end up being a similar situation 90% of the time. Even applied to FF7, Evil king-Sephiroth, Demon overlord-Jenova Crystals-Black/White materia Warrior-Cloud,,,Etc. so on so forth. Final Fantasy 8 Evil Queen-Edea Demon overlord-Ultramecia Crystal- Time Warrior-Squall, Etc. Oh by the way there always seems to be the sacrificial priestess so Aerith for FF7, Rinoa for FF8 (though she was saved), Yuna from FFX (lost her lover till FFX 2 and it's only the medium ending) So yeah, unfortunantly the older you're so called original stuff, follows the same hidden formula. Biscuits taste bland after awhile no matter what you cover them with.

Hey man chill out, I called you a "fken", that's not even a thing, the statement was silly by design and I figured that was far too obvious for anyone to, well, have that sort of reaction. I don't see it as childish, I saw it as harmless, effectively a non-statement.
Also, I doubt you meant to do this but I dislike the suggestion that I just found myself not enjoying it and then went on to say nobody else would without asking myself why I didn't like it. If I'd been unable to come up with a reason I'd have just figured it was just me and gone on with things, but it seemed to be certain objective elements that, to the best of my critical faculties, I could only deem "terrible flaws". Of course I'm not going to start talking about what those elements were or why I would judge them so, and as you said, you wouldn't want to hear it.
Oh and one last thing, I do feel that I should clarify that I have no problem with disagreement about any such judgments I might make, and also no problem with people enjoying "bad" things, your post just invoked my standing self-orders to insist FF8 sucks when it makes some kind of warped sense to.

"The idea behind me killing her was that it would improve my life. Free of all the ways she inconvenienced me, I would have greater personal opportunities. I could be happier."
Clearly there is nothing wrong with the idea of killing her.

Scatt, the king of Reducto Ad Absurdum, out.
i'm sorry but sacrificing some rights for a general higher quality of life is wrong?
No I was illustrating why your constant insistence that we're not separating the idea and execution was stupid. The idea of communism absolutely demands the complete and forcible dissolvement of any remotely free market, and demands that everything be owned by the state, and everything "economic" be controlled by the state, because that's what makes it communism. This inherently includes the part where everyone is forced to work.
What you've been doing this entire time is separating the positive goals from the rest of the idea, which is arbitrary and extremely stupid, and I was illustrating that I could apply this same separation elsewhere, IE: a murder. "Never mind that my plan demanded I end her life, that's just the execution."

Not absurd at all.
Please, please, please please please please please please please, know what things mean before you respond to them. This shows that at the time of reading my post you didn't know what reducto ad absurdum meant, and that you didn't look it up before formulating a response. This really is about as intelligent as trying to dispute something someone said in Norwegian without translating or knowing Norwegian (incidentally, that was another reducto ad absurdum). And in this case, it really did have that much of an impact, because the end result was that your post wasn't really a response to any sentiment I actually expressed.

Historically, until about the last 60 years, things seem to function better the more capitalistic they are, with the exception of total anarchy functioning slightly worse. In modern times, things that have a mixed economy that's about 60-70% free market seem to function best, followed by largely capitalistic places, followed by majority socialist places, with communistic places being completely dysfunctional, and anarcho-capitalist developed nations being nonexistant.

Anyone who loses respect for myself or anyone else for marijuana use pretty much instantly loses a lot of respect from me.

Oh and I live in Canada so it's like, still illegal, but with very little risk/consequences, and is therefore adequately cheap.

When did this thread get dumber than a newgrounds thread on religion?
Stop being dumb everyone, especially ScottMcTony you gad dam.
Also OutFoxxed you're starting to come off like someone who makes a concentrated effort to fail to comprehend anything someone who disagrees with you is saying.
There's a difference between communism and socialism. There's a difference between the idea and the actual outcome. Socialism is basically a world where everyone shares everything
No, socialism is a world where everyone is forced to share everything, and understands that this will be the case should they create anything. What you're suggesting is a hypothetical species that would naturally behave like a Utopian socialist society even in a circumstance of anarchy. And hey, maybe such a hypothetical species would be pretty functional, I certainly don't think these things, I will call them Ogloobs, are terrible evil creatures. But that is hardly the idea behind socialism.
