Hi Guys

I'm having an issue with trying to start Final Fantasy VII.  I have the original game and have created iso's from the discs.  I installed the game, ran it once and it started fine.  I installed some mods using the Bootleg gui and the tutorial for bootleg, with no issues.  Upon trying to start the game however i receive the 'please insert game disc' error.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit.  The datadrive key in my registry is set to my virtual drive (in my case 'H:\').  This is the path on my registry to the DataDrive key.  I have tried it with my physical disc with no success.
This is the path to the key.  Is it correct?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII

Is there something I'm missing as I'm at a loss at what to do next?

Many thanks for your time.

Hi SuperBeast,

start the command prompt :  Windows-Key+R : cmd.exe   ! Run as Administrator !

Execute this command (output=FF7.txt) :
Code: [Select]
regedit.exe /e FF7.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc."

Post the output ( FF7.txt ) by using the # button => [ code ] FF7.txt [ /code ]

Hi SuperBeast

Your registry seems to be proper, except that I did not have a key "SSI_DEBUG" with me.
Have you installed Service Pack 1?

Otherwise, your virtual CD software seems to be faulty. Just try with another.

@SuperBeast, i compared your registry entries with mine and i can't find any error.

  • Is the displayed label of the ISO correct ?  ( FF7DISC1 / 2 / 3 )

  • ... have a look at what compatability mode the .exe's are running after you have patched, as with some games this can make an "Insert Disc" error even if the disc is in, switch between the different modes and see what works for you (generally Win98/ME is best)

Also select the Run as Administrator option if this does not work for you.

@UGerstl I was afraid you'd say that.
  • My discs are called FF7DISC1.iso, FF7DISC2.iso and FF7DISC3.iso
  • I've tried setting all of the .exe's to Windows 98 compatibility and ensured Run as Admin was checked.  I also tried the different compatibility modes with no luck.
  • I created the discs a long time ago, around the time when the first mods came out.

I have turned off UAC through all of this, with no luck.

This is so frustrating, even with installing the game via the real disc I end up with the same result.

These are the steps I take for installing the game:
  • Install FFVII with no additional drivers, just the game and nothing else
  • Run the game, it runs but with no movies.  I'm guessing this is correct as i did not install the directshow driver.  Should this be installed?
  • Run BFE.exe with the following settings:

During the 'M004d' installation, is it ok to select to make certain choices (such as checking the fixes or enabling the greater than 9999 cap)?
  • This is the contents of the folder where all the mods are held.  Is this list ok, am i missing any or is there some i should not have?:

  • Attempt to run FFVII, with no luck :(

Is there anything glaringly obvious in the above that I am doing wrong?

Thanks again for your time.

  • My discs are called FF7DISC1.iso, FF7DISC2.iso and FF7DISC3.iso
I think he wanted the names inside of the Cd's, but i also think they are alright.

  • I've tried setting all of the .exe's to Windows 98 compatibility and ensured Run as Admin was checked.  I also tried the different compatibility modes with no luck.
I don't use something like this, FF7 works fine for me without.

I have turned off UAC through all of this, with no luck.
Same as above.

  • Run the game, it runs but with no movies.  I'm guessing this is correct as i did not install the directshow driver.  Should this be installed?
Don't use the directshow driver from install-CD. instead you can download the TrueMotion 2.0 from here and install that.
Then you should be able to view the videos with a media player (and also view in game).

I'm not use Bootleg, but I've not read something about Patch 1.02. Is this patch included?

I've fixed it...  :o

I uninstalled the game completely, like I have done numerous times in my attempts to get it to work.  I then deleted the bootleg frontend and all files to do with Bootleg and replaced them with fresh copies from the zip file.  Upon reinstallation of Bootleg i had forgotten to change the FMV cutscenes from the default to Rumbah 1280 sharp.  When the installation had completed, it didnt automatically run, but when i turned off the compatibikity mode for windows 98 it worked!

Therefore my problem was being caused by one of two things:
  • BFE needed 'cleaning out' due to something which was causing my issues.  What this something is i'm not sure.
  • There's something wrong with Rumbah's 1280 Sharp videos, but I highly doubt this as they are just video files.

Thanks all for your help and to the authors of these mods for your fine work.

Create a virtual CD-ROM drive and mount the FF7 ISO.
Then run Bootloader as administrator.
Click CONFIGURE and change the CD-ROM drive letter to match the virtual CD-ROM drive.
Click SAVE.

Make sure that you create a virtual CD-ROM drive, otherwise you'll encounter problems.
