That's an interesting idea. Technically, if the slowing down would be done the way it is done now, given one blue and one green chocobo, one would be slowed down by 25% (the one affected by 0x01 bit) and the other by 50% (the one affected by 0x02 bit). Yellow chocobos would be slowed down by 75%.

It depends whether that "outer space" part at the end of short course is meant to stop river but not mountain. It isnt a water area...  so I'd have to go hill.
Well, if you're into map editing then you should just disable handicap bits for that part, as it's neither water nor uphill (as downhills are in the other part of both tracks and they don't slow chocobos down).

Second thought: Actually, if you think of it - water chocobos are able to cross rivers and shallow waters, so places with no solid ground. It might be that the space was supposed to be that "not-that-solid" ground.

Third thought: How the chocobos behave on PSX? The maps were probably converted from some other format, there might be a difference.

Oh, and the highest bit (0x80) is supposed to mark some places on the map, as it's checked in the code, but dunno what. It's not connected with 0x01 & 0x02 though, so just don't change that bit and you should be fine.

Now I see it, I misread your post. You really should debug it before attempting any fixes, it might be that the part of the map is disabled or something like that. I never really bothered to check which is a hill and which isn't, just assumed that the map in the file is linear.

Values are in hex, let's only look at the lowest 2 bits of each byte. From what you say it looks like short map has 0x01 (hill) first and 0x02 (water) after that. Long map has only 0x02 (so water, looks good).

Now, the case is ok, it's just how it works. Values are:
0 (yellow): 0x03 (so 0x01 + 0x02, or more correctly 0x01 | 0x02)
1 (green hills-chocobo): 0x01
2 (blue water-chocobo): 0x02
3 (black water-hills-chocobo): 0x00
4 (gold all-wonders): 0x00
Those are handicap bits - if a bit is set, a chocobo will be affected by terrain with that bit set. We can clearly see, that setting 0x02 (so a water handicap bit) for a water chocobo is a big wtf.

And yes, the speed corrections are at 0x00774A5C, it just does a bitwise AND between chocobo handicap bits and terrain bits. So for a terrain 0x82 (water) and a blue chocobo (0x02) we get 0x02 (affected). Yellow chocobo with 0x03 will also get 0x02 (affected).

If the bit is set, it looks like the speed is reduced by "result / 4" (so 1/4 for hill bit and 2/4 for water bit). So, the fix I proposed was switching 0x01 and 0x02 in that case. If that doesn't work, you gotta debug it, since I can't run FF7 for now.

Also, I looked at that NOPed part of the chocobo fix, it looks like what was missing is a lower right coordinate of some rectangle, but the drawing function disregards it anyway (only using left-top corner and width + height). So a proper fix wouldn't be noticable, I post it anyway.

Mhmm... Only tested in field/battle, but Alt+4 does nothing. Also, you can't just run ff7_en.exe, it has to go through the launcher (unless you have a custom launcher which allows for ff7 to be run on it's own, but most people probably don't have such a thing on their disposal).

Yes it does, but the original framelimiting is flawed, it doesn't matter if it relies on RDTSC or QPC. QPC is imperfect only on specific hardware and only on heavy load.

Yeah, correcting the flevel will not correct the FPS thing.

I don't have anything you could try out. I'm thinking what the limiter should be replaced with and how it should be corrected. When I was adding a frame limiter to Highway minigame, I was considering replacing the (flawed) RDTSC with QPC/QPF, but after a little bit of reading I've came to conclusion the extra time needed to bind it into the exe will not be worth it (QPC is flawed too, it needs babysitting on some systems).

You don't actually need a high resolution timing since you never go above 100FPS. Even timeGetTime + timeBeginPeriod + Sleep will do the job, this will also reduce the impact on the CPU.

Just thinking out loud, weekend is over, so no time to do that anyway.

Ok, I might know what's going on. First of all, this is how the original frame limiting (mostly) works: info about frame limiting. It's from old times, but should still be (mostly) valid.

Read it? Good. Now about the subtraction - look how (theoretically) a main loop could be constructed:

So, the game makes sure that the time between A and B is at least the time it calculated the frame processing should take... Wait a minute! What about the time it takes to get from B to A again? That's assumed to be exactly 10000 RDTSC ticks (for field).

This could affect the FPS slightly (now I see what you mean). One could correct it (slightly ;p) by moving the B just before A, or actually modding the limiter to take into account at least the last frame processing time (each additional frame will add precision, but with exponentially lowering results - something like 4-5 frames should be enough).

About the panning - make sure that the mod in flevel is done (you could enter some pretty low value and see if the speed increases) and check without FRAPS on vanilla FF7 (no opengl - close one eye if it hurts to see those graphics ;p).

Ok, instead of PM-ing you, I'll post it here for reference. There is no bug in the code! Square made a mistake when creating the script. To fix it, open flevel.lgp with flevel editor (Makou Reactor is great!), go to file mrkt2, group "camera" (Id=3), Script1 and change:

I've marked missing values with ---, that's where you see the skip. I've looked at the PSX version at YouTube and it's there too.

You can fix it without modifying flevel.lgp by hooking the opcode and correcting the steps value on the fly. Sorry, it was that simple. FPS bug is elsewhere.

As a side note, memory offsets in the 2012 release are the same as the 1998 one (1.02 ff7.exe), so anything that doesn't rely on the opengl thing should work if the patcher is not picky (again, the one working in the memory - to patch the file you'd either have to adaptively patch or make the static AF3DN linking to old exe described in the other thread).

Its true that the older version have tons of mods, but for some users like me, even with the converter and aali's work
still faced issues with rendering newer graphics =S, so im sticking with 2012 version with the .lpg mods to help, i've personaly not tested
it as my knowledge is limited but there is a faq how to mod the  2012 to work with aali's without converting, its on the script and reverse eng.
It's for changing the rereleased version to be old-version-mods-friendly. You keep the new graphics engine (as that's where all the new features are in), so you have to say bye bye to the opengl one.

Offsets change depending on which version of ff7.exe you use. If you make a diff between the original file and the one with 9999lb applied, and post it here, I'll tell you which modifications need to be reverted. Either that, or wait.

It's the limit breaking patch. For some reason I've left the changes made when I was testing the possibility for HP to go as high as 64k and that involved changing signed comparisons to unsigned ones. When HP drops below zero, vanilla ff7 does a signed check, modded ff7 does unsigned one (-10 <= 9999 yields true while 0xFFF6 <= 0x7530 is false). I'll fix it if I find the Skerb/YAMP compiler...
