General Discussion / Your new mod is......
« on: 2001-06-19 06:07:00 »
Nope, that's the stuff my parents try to use on me and, frankly, it almost never works. I *was* hoping I wouldn't get elected. It's been my past experience that being a mod just makes it that more likely that I'll overreact to something and tick people off. (Heehee, maybe that means I'm fascist...)
I didn't vote for myself, and I don't think I can mod as fairly as the others who were nominated. They come here a lot more, usually have a lot more to say (like Skillster said, right now I come in bursts), and they know Qhimm's "system" better than I do.
In addition, there's the matter of time, which I have very little of these days.

Ok, this is a surprise. I thought we were going for just one mod. I guess my, "All the reasons I'm not qualified" speech didn't have much effect. Either that, or, I posted it too late. Well, I guess you guys wanted me, and now you've got me.  :)
Hmmm, I guess this means The Skillster will remain the only one around here with 5 stars for a while.
Anyways, major congrats Ficedula. If anyone deserved to be a mod, it was definately him.

General Discussion / Nvidia has done it again...
« on: 2001-06-19 06:52:00 »
Heh, I honestly can't figure out why everyone hates the guy so much. Especially the media, they seem to take every opportunity they have (and then some) to smear his public image. I don't see why people call it the "government's money". Don't they know that the government's money is really taxpayer dollars? I also don't get why people are criticizing his tax cut plans. Heck, Ireland did something similar last year (which was also heavily criticized), and now Ireland's got economic boom because of the cuts. Besides, IIRC, tax rates in the US are the highest they've ever been in history.
I also don't get what the big fuss over Kyoto is. Apparently the prez pointed this out while he was in Sweden, but all the countries in Europe are up in arms about him rejecting Kyoto when not even *one* EU country has ratified it themselves. C'mon. It's not a new US position either. Clinton had that big buildup for it, but his administration ended up not signing it. And before the US' current leader was even on the scene, the US Senate voted 95-0 against it.
Besides, dismissing environmental agreements so bizarrely self-flagellating that they exclude India (population 1 billion), China (population 1.3 billion) and the rest of the Third World from their pollution restrictions while forcing the US to undertake a ruinous 30 percent cut in C02 emissions is just the smart thing to do.   :)
I also don't understand what the big deal over Missile Defense is.
I found these two opinion columns from the Washington Post:   http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/opinion/columns/krauthammercharles/A42023-2001May3.html" TARGET=_blank>The Bush Doctrine
and  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/opinion/columns/krauthammercharles/A12585-2001May10.html" TARGET=_blank>Dense on Missile Defense
to be very eye opening as to what is really going on.

Yes, but for first timers and completely new systems, it looks like a steal. As long as the sound is as good as it's supposed to be, people won't have to worry about plunking down $90+ (US) for a decent sound card. I think it'll be interesting to see if and how AMD will take advantage of this. My personal bet is that they'll somehow try to incorporate it into their upcoming next generation products.

General Discussion / Your Names...
« on: 2001-06-19 06:15:00 »
I've always pronounced "Qhimm" like "Kim". Why? Because without a "u" after it, "q" sounds like a "k"--it only has the "kwa" sound when the "u" gets added in (dang, I'm getting sick of those "quotes"  :)).

Alhexx: About Qhimm's name. (Gee, I hope he doesn't kill me for this...  :D) http://qhimm.3dstream.net/agffr/faqs/faq_elys_notfaq.shtml" TARGET=_blank>http://qhimm.3dstream.net/agffr/faqs/faq_elys_notfaq.shtml
It looks like he just found a creative new way to spell his real name and used that for his handle. His site's main url (http://home.swipnet.se/mrdata82) seems to have the "82" because that's the year he was born.

Well, I hate to be a spoiler but...
I do have to say that it's very nice to be nominated. I'm flattered, to tell the truth. I have no idea how it happened, but thanks to whomever nominated me.
However, I don't think I'm the best choice for modding General Chat; my haunts are more the Tech-Related and FF7 Remake forums.
I do come here now and then, but I usually don't have as much to say.
Still, let me offer a suggestion about this. Can't we just expand the domain of one (or all) of the 3 "newest" moderators (Jari Huttunen, dagsverre, and The SaiNt) to include the General Discussion as well? They've already proven themselves, and all know what's ok and what's not. That just makes a bit more sense to me. Although, I'm not sure if any of them *want* to be...
Anyway, I'm not trying to shirk duty (I *am* a mod at several other forums I go to), and if by some miracle I get elected, I'll do my best to responsibly carry out my job. But again, why me? IMHO, the other candidates are much better suited for the position, and I encourage people to consider very carefully if, for some strange reason, you're actually planning on voting for me.
I know who I'm voting for.

Heh. Nope, it's pretty simple. In the General forum listing, change the pulldown list right under the "Post New Topic" button to "Show All Topics" and then click "Go". Then just look back through the pages until you find it.

General Discussion / Posting Habits
« on: 2001-06-01 05:03:00 »
MMiller8: See the spot right under people's names in their posts? It says: "Registered ???" (the ???s are when they registered). It's right under their post count.

The Skillster: Right. More simply put I'd say it boils down to... NO SPAM.  :D Neither of us have ever had that problem.

But im pleased to be some part of the technical advancements on ficedula's part that have helped us to even START thinking about a remake
I couldn't agree with that more.

M0T: You're no longer a newbie when you quit acting like one.

Yeah, being grouped in the same category with Joey isn't usually taken as a compliment. But, hey, it happened to me. I survived.  :)

The SaiNt: That would be ok. But I don't know if he's got enough time for that. If Qhimm feels the need, maybe he can just expand the jurisdiction of one of the existing mods. Either that or add Ficedula to the ranks.

Ant: Personally, I doubt it. While they both did (are) break (ing) the rules, they don't behave that similarly. Cuddleswing was... I guess what you'd call "spamming". She never was a troll like Joey and his ilk.

Ficedula: Well, as of this past week or so he does, anyway.  :)

General Discussion / Qhimm projects...
« on: 2001-06-02 16:21:00 »
Well, then you obviously thought wrong. Qhimm is not known for the frequency of his releases/updates.
It's clearly explained (previous post) why his site is not being updated. It's understandable for people to jump to conclusions, but just because there is an *apparent* lack of progress doesn't mean that there is. Furthermore, (I'm speaking from experience) asking about his projects is more likely to jeopardize things than to help out.
I hesitate to re-release this info (it's from an expired thread), since we still won't know for sure until Qhimm says so, but
here is the *unnoficial* status for his projects:
TTG: paused
Griever: paused (expected to close soon)
FF8FMV: closed
FF8MIDI: closed
FF8SND: closed
Garden: closed
Eight: closed
Jenova: closed
Jenova*Birth: paused (expected to close soon)
FF7SND: closed
Gast: paused

General Discussion / Qhimm projects...

Haven't you read Qhimm's last update?
It says this right on the main page:

Quote
Qhimm Due to some trouble with my current ISP, I've been having trouble updating this page. Currently I'm looking into moving the entire site to 3DStream (where the messageboard resides), and if/when that happens this page will simply redirect people to the new URL. Don't expect any regular updates for a while.

General Discussion / FF11 preview movie!
« on: 2001-06-01 16:05:00 »
Yet another cry of, "Wolf!" from our esteemed Joey. How many times *is* this?! I'm willing to believe that he genuinely thought it was a new preview, based on his track record (believing anything and everything he is told), but still. For gosh sakes, when is he going to learn to not believe everything he hears? And if this *was* a joke, he's got no right be to mad. I'm glad I wasn't around to waste my time when this was first posted.

General Discussion / *ANOTHER* FFX pc post...
« on: 2001-06-16 02:16:00 »
Interesting topic. I might make a late entry into the discussion.  :) These are the type of things that Terence seems to thrive on. I'm surprised he hasn't posted in this thread. We've discussed some of these things in the Remake forum already, and he's been most helpful.

Anyway...
MMiller8: I hope I'm wrong, but it sounds like KojiroTakenashi's referring to all those "FF7 was unfinished" rumors (which are untrue, btw). They usually go hand in hand with the equally untrue "Aeris Revival" rumors.

General Discussion / *ANOTHER* FFX pc post...
« on: 2001-06-01 16:47:00 »
Ficedula: Actually, from what I can remember, that's not entirely correct.
I remember reading the following (I don't have the sources to back it up, but it seemed official):
-FF7 PSX was an instant hit and more copies were sold ever (I think it was more than all of the previous FFs combined on its opening day alone). The game met with similar success in the U.S. and Europe.
-FF7 PC continued the trend, by selling even better than FF7 PSX.
-When FF8 PSX was released, despite being a disappointment to many fans, it sold more than FF7 did on *its* opening day.
-FF8 PC sold well, but many computer users rightfully shunned it because of its poor porting. After all, at the time there were a wealth of much better PC RPGs out there.

So I think the problem was with FF8PC. Either that or Square just thinks strangely.   The fact that they got a good amount of flaming for the problems in the PC ports probably didn't help.

General Discussion / Picture formats
« on: 2001-06-01 16:34:00 »
I agree with Halkun. If you need to convert between formats,  http://www.irfanview.com/" TARGET=_blank>Irfanview  is by far your best choice. I've used it for a fair amount of time, and I don't really have (m)any complaints. It supports a *ton* of formats (lots of plugins), a couple languages, and, best of all, it's free.

General Discussion / After a long absence.........
« on: 2001-05-18 23:58:00 »
cHiBiMaRuKo: Hey, nice to see you back.

Hmm, on a side note, what is it though with people always posting "I'm leaving" and "I'm back" threads in forums like this? It seems kind of odd, but maybe I'm missing something. People sure do it a lot.

General Discussion / 56k modem = How Fast?
« on: 2001-05-16 23:49:00 »
Where I am, my only choices are Cable or ISDN. If I went with Cable, I'd have to get someone to come in and install it (digging up the yard in the process... not good). Well, I'm stuck with ISDN for the time being. I guess I shouldn't be complaining.   The problem is that there aren't any ISPs around here who do ISDN.

General Discussion / 56k modem = How Fast?
« on: 2001-05-12 05:19:00 »
Just one thing to add about ISDN lines. They can be either 64K or 128K (like Ant said, 64K for each line). The important thing to note is that not all ISDN users have 2 ISDN lines. Some only have one (so they only have a 64K connection). If they have a dual connection (2 lines) then heck yeah, sure they can connect at 128K. In fact, I happen to have a dual ISDN line, and I can choose to connect at either 64K (using only one line) or 128K (both). What I like about it is that the line quality is so much more stable when compared to your average phone line. Is this true for DSL/Cable as well?

EDIT: Poor wording.

General Discussion / Problems Emulating FFIX
« on: 2001-05-12 05:07:00 »
Yeah, for one thing, FFX will probably be very similar to FFVIII because it's the same development team that made FFVIII who's working on it (as reported by Halkun). Heck, Tidus looks practically the same as Squall, and Yuna has an uncanny likeness to Rinoa.
And, yes, there will be some voice acting: http://www.ffnet.net/news/13-01-2001.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.ffnet.net/news/13-01-2001.html
