Hi, i'm sure you guys have heard this stuff many times before >_< I've looked around the first 12 pages or so and i haven't found any working solutions for this prob. I have the 1.02 patched version btw.

My specs:
Win XP Pro
DirectX 9.0c installed

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2.0GHz
256MB Ram
ATI Radeon 7000 64MB

anyway, i've tried pretty much all possible settings for this, doesn't work under any. Sometimes it crashes to desktop before the movie starts playing. Other times, it just crashes when i click on 'new game' (turns black, then crashes)

Only thing that helped a bit was setting ff8.exe at Windows 98/ME compatibility. Now, instead of crashing, it stays black as if a movie's supposed to be playing.

I had a similar problem with FF7, when the screen was pretty much blacked out, but then i used the upside-down movie patch and it worked perfectly. Is there a similar patch for ff8? b/c the only patch i found was the 1.02 fixes patch.

If not, any other help would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

Aaron

The upside-down movie patch for FF7 just installs a newer codec for those movies.  FF8 uses Bink video, a new codec shouldn't be necessary.

Do these problems occur if you are in software rendering?

One update tho, i dled a save and placed it in the save folder, and when i load off that it works perfectly fine. Same disk, even an FMV worked...0.o so why can't i start a new game >_<

Are you using the latest video driver....
Have you tried an older video driver?

How about a different install method? (There are only two)

sounds like u might have a scratched disk, or a corrupt installation. Why don't u install the game on another PC then save it at your first chance and transfer the saved game.
