Help me find the best mods!
« on: 2012-07-01 22:41:04 »
Hi guys,

(TL:DR - I am very confused with all the mods available - Can you help me compile the ones I want and how to implement them?
Please if you have the links to the forum/file please post a reply.

Mods I want -
Final Fantims Remastered Music (Have the music - Need the mod/guide to add these)
Better Field Chibis  - http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=9688.0 Need more like this and downloads
Better Field Backgrounds - Downloading from torrent (Facepalmer.zip) (Need the mod/guide to add these) - Any other better replacements?
Retextured Battle Scenery and World - Like in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOn6fnwPTcA&feature=my_favorites&list=FLh-Nt-LKtyohydK9PbhDbJg
Better Battle Characters + Weapons - I'm not sure if there is such a mod JUST for these...
Retextured Enemies - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeY9qd6d8Ms&list=PLBB06477AB8987AE9&index=4&feature=plpp_video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM6zGuFB0aM&feature=BFa&list=PLBB06477AB8987AE9, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd1-siysggs&feature=BFa&list=PLBB06477AB8987AE9, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MDpuxlVx20&feature=BFa&list=PLBB06477AB8987AE9, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHh4TCrvuJM&feature=BFa&list=PLBB06477AB8987AE9

I didn't realise for a very long time that Qhimm was somewhere I found myself coming back to every month to check the progress of mods and FF7 projects, but I've finally realised this and I'm finally making the leap to begin replaying Final Fantasy VII on PC again.  I have an old Asian continent PC version (surprisingly in English language though!) that I'm looking to mod and I was hoping you guys could help me quickly and easily piece together a plan to mod all the features I would like into the game :)

Specs - i7 2600K, 16GB RAM, ATI 6950 GFX Card, 64 bit Windows 7 Business. (64bit, is this a problem?)

1.  Music
FinalFantims music has been on my phone for 2 years - I love his work and he has captured the essence of Nobou Uematsus music almost perfectly.   I'd like to use this music in game (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8160.0) - Is this possible?

2. Graphical Overhaul - Battle Screen
I've seen some beautiful HD textures and Models remade, but my main concern is that I only like them in battle - I don't want them to enter into the realm of the World-screen.  Not only this but HD textures for the battle stages would be welcomed. But which mods allow this?
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12522.0 - Note to self - Find out how extensive this is and how to remove bits I don't like such as World non chibis

3. Graphical Overhaul - World and Scene Screens
Are there any HD background arts for the levels?  That would be AWESOME! Also, I don't like the FF8 style characters on the World and Scene screens (Chibis ftw)  - Are there any updated chibis for this (even if the models are FF9 quality but with HD textures I would be extatic)

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=11933.msg165489#msg165489

4. Menu and Retranslation
I've already seen a great mod for this, but I'm waiting for the owners to update to M05b.  Also, I'm not entirely sure on how to go about modding this in / how much it will already do.
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=11649.0

For the above points, what would you give me advice on the following
a) Mods available to do these updates
b) best ones in your opinion
c) any further advice on things I may have missed
d) any advice on compatibility or installation I should know.

Regards/ Richie

(EDIT - Can a mod or admin please move this to Final Fantasy Forums - General Discussion please?  I feel I may be in the wrong section here - Sorry)
(EDIT 2 - Linking pictures and threads I find, as I find them)
(EDIT 3 - TLDR Added)

Check out The Big List of FF7 Mods.

You might also find The Bootleg Configurator useful.
I'm interested to know if it works on the Asian version of the game.

Although the version I play is Asia-Pacific Edition by EA Classics, it is still actually in English - Whaddya know...  :-o

Thank you for the mod list, I'll have a poke around that an add to the list I am making.  Is there a way to copy some elements from one mod and only use those?

I wont be able to use Bootleg Configurator because it requires the default path and not a custom one.  I cannot use the custom as I have a 60GB Boot SSD with no space left so I install games to my D drive :( (D:\Final Fantasy)

BRB - Work, Will finish reply then :D

Actually, the Bootleg Configurator works well when FF7 is not installed in the default directory. My FF7 install directory is D:\FF7 (FF7 in order to prevent problems with the installer not recognizing spaces).

Please read all the tutorials and tips on the site in order to correctly install the Bootleg Configurator because that is (in my opinon) the best way to pick and choose different mods.

I was reading though a guide on how to install mods and it basically got me to install FFRemix before anything else.  Can I now install bootleg over the top?

No, it's best to install Bootleg on a fresh, maximum installation of FF7.
The Remix breaks a lot of game files and causes crashes.
Bootleg 0039 is set to release within 48 hours.  It fixes a tremendous number of bugs.

Pitbrat shove a warning on main bootleg window about the remix patch?  Maybe that will help?

With Bootleg coming out in 48 hours or so, will this maybe come hand in hand with Menu Redux M05b?

EDIT TO AVOID DOUBLEPOST - bah, this place is not newbie friendly lol ^_^ (criticism not hate!!)
I'm having a very hard time figuring out what mods are in what pack and whether or not things are even released or not, and I get lost just as often as I manage to find something interesting :(

I'm going to have to get some more practice in at this whole modding thing before I'm ever ready to sit down and play!

Just start bootleg, select the mods you want to install and it will tell you which files you need to download (the red highlighted ones). But you should wait for v0039 which should be out soon.
