Freeze on NEW GAME

[Hansibus]

The game freezes every time i get to the screen that says "NEW GAME" and "Continue?" (Continue is written in grey). I downloaded and set up everything according to the instructions, tried disabling all mods (except 1), tried launching the game without using 7thHeaven and used the ff7_bc.exe when Reunion mod was enabled but every time it failed. I even used GameConverter again to overwrite the exes. Any other ideas?
The credits on startup seem to work correctly and i can skip them with the keyboard (weirdly though not with a controller). Also, the cursor next to "Continue?" does not move.
I am using the Steam version.
