Does Final Fantasy really mean something for number 13?

I've read somewhere that final fantasy 13 is going to be the last new final fantasy made. Can anyone confirm this?

It might be the last one, but if this is true, then it being the last one doesn't mean that it's the end of Final Fantasy. Not for a long time.

do you mean they're just gonna do endless remakes of older FFs now ?

or are they going to drop the series altogether? that would suck. FF's winning point as a series is diversity. that's hard to find elsewhere.

Okay, I looked around searching for where I found the article and re read it. Apparently it's going to be the last final fantasy directed by Nomura. So I guess it's not nearly as devastating news compared to saying it was the last numbered final fantasy.
