7th Heaven / Crash shortly after opening movie

I posted first in the Remako thread since that's what lead me to mod the game in the first place, but as the situation developed it became clear it's a general problem. I'll repost the last update here as the previous parts of the post have been solved now.

Edit: The saga continues. Another clean install, got it working this time. The Remako upgraded backgrounds worked as did the improved field models. Then the game crashed upon loading Barret's initial dialogue to Cloud on the train platform (well that's what I assume anyway, it had Barret looking at Cloud then the game froze). Here's the log.
