I thread for gathering info for my ''guide''
« on: 2001-03-06 19:57:00 »
As somebody of you may already know, I am doing a guide to Cosmo, Ficedula's great little program, but it is NOT easy to go through all the files of flevel.lgp and tell which level is which. So I'm gathering up some info in this thread, Skillster and Srethron has already promised to help me and I'm gathering up a ''team'' so anyone who's interested to help, either post here, or if you want to, you can join my team.

So now, I need the filename of:
The mako reactor no.1 bridge,
The mako no.1 reactor enterance,
mako reactor no.1 elevator,
the place where Jessie's leg gets stuck,
The place where's the first savepoint of
the game,
The place where the scorpion guard attacks you,
next screen of the explosion,
the place where Barret tells you to
rendezvous at sector 8 station.
I'm pleased If you help me. Remember the more help I get, the more faster will the guide be compelete.

The very first scene of reactor 1 is md1stin. The entrance itself is md1_1.

Hey JOONAS! Is it possible to release an uncomplete copy, calling it v0.79 or something? I would like a good referance and right now, anything would help.

If you think you'll be totally done within a week or so, don't bother. I can wait.  :)

Sephiroth 3d: This will not be done in a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong while, but when the site's up, Me and Srethron will be adding lots and lots of new info there, so hold on...
I just noticed theres a mistake in the topic title it should be ''A'' instead of ''I''.

Honestly, compiling the list itself, minus pics and everything won't be that hard. The Skillster and I could probably make a basic list like that in a couple of hours. If so, here's how it works. Someone does the locations that start with A all the way to M. The other does N through Z. Simple. For most of them you can just look at the background pic, for the ones where you can't do that, look at the text and guess.

One thing to point out. All of the the "mdsX_Y" (where the X is a number and Z is a number that sometimes has letters in front of it) files are Midgar. They work like this:
let's take mds1_1 as an example. The first number means it's Midgar Sector 1 (the #1 reactor). The second number means it's scene 1. So it's scene one of the Midgar reactor, (the opening scene after the opening video). mds1_2 is Midgar section 1, scene 2--where you name Cloud and go into the reactor. The first number is which sector (8 total) of Midgar, and the second number is the particular scene.
mds1: Sector 1 (1st Reactor)
mds5: Sector 5 (Reactor, Aeris' Church, Slums, Aeris' House)
mds6: Sector 6 (Slums and Corneo)
mds7: Sector 7 (Slums, Avalanche HQ, Train Station, Pillar, and Train Graveyard)
mds8: Sector 8 (You end up here after you leave the Sector 1 Reactor, and later when you come back to Midgar in Disc 3 to deal with Hojo and everyone else.)

correction
the "s" in mds1_1 stands for slums not sector
there is no mds1
there is md1_1 which is :
"md" midgar "1" sector 1 "_1" location1 (in order of appearence.
but honestly i wasnt doing anything when u emailed me  :D
srethron is far far more complete and faster than i am at collecting useless/full info.

Would it be easier or harder to write the whole guide scene by scene? I personally have written a list from A-F, but it took long. But if you can go through 700 files in a few hours, do it of course  :D . The guide will be done in  scene-by-scene format. You have bben a great help. I haven't had the time to do anything but check the mail and boards over this time, I'm pretty busy at school.

Unfortunately, Cosmo can't open all 700 files at the moment. Once I've got 0.75 out (within a week, I *hope*) which is mostly improving the various tool and adding patch support, increasing compatibility will be my next concern.

If you do a search/replace on all files ("*") then Cosmo reports something like:
Files examined: 730
Files successfully opened: 540

Or numbers around that range. Basically, you can open about 60-70% of the levels.

fice: one damn extremley usefull tool for cosmo would be to preveiw a level before you open it.
look at it like this:
where you have the list box to choose the level to load from flevel.lgp you could have a check box saying "Show preview" and when ticked brings up a small window on the side that shows a small preview of the highlighted levels' background graphics.
coz its a pain to hunt down the scene's background in the forever crashing Gast then switch over to cosmo to locate the exact filename.
if you know what i mean?
and thats bad news that cosmo cant open all the level  :(
ive got your second from last release and after remaking the index i get alot of rubbish in some scenes (dialog).

Previewing could be done ... I'll get around to it some time.

Side note: LGP Tools updated.

It has been WAY too quiet.
Srethron, how's your ff7tech site going?
Skillster, have you done anything related to this project?
I need more people to help meeeeeee...

(Ficedula, how's Cosmo advancing?)

The Skillster: Still trying to have No Life, eh?

Ficedula: Love the improvements. Can't wait for what's next.

I've applied that patch of yours that renames Sephiroth, do you need any info?

JOONAS: It's probably easier to do it scene by scene. Sorry, I haven't had time to get to it, but I will ASAP. I'll update you on my progress soon--just want to get everything right. Hopefully you'll like it all.  :)

Hiya,

Cosmo: is nearly ready to be updated. Expect an update in the next day or two (mainly bug fixes, one or improvements to things like Replace tool).

Srethron: You installed the patch? Well,
a) Did it install OK?
b) Does it seem to have renamed Sephiroth OK?
c) Does the game still run   :)

Update: Cosmo 0.75 uploaded. Note that this *really* isn't tested properly. I know most releases aren't but this one has undergone practically no tests at all. It should work, of course ...
I've tested the download (a few people have been reporting download problems) and I got it back fine.

I've had more than one request for this ... I can't email it to *everyone* who wants it. Check the site again. If it still isn't working, I've posted a copy on another server (link given on the news page).

I thought about this before ... stas.net (where I run the mirror) is too much hassle to upload to regularly (no FTP access). Annoying. Well, Cosmo's up there anyway.
