General Discussion / Shameful FFXV Excitement
« on: 2016-02-08 22:43:50 »
I really, really know better than to be excited by this game but for some reason that Niflheim trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO7nyrNBFXA) has done it. It's probably because it is the first time since the announcement that its name has changed from FFVS13 to FFXV that the game has actually resembled FFVS13 (compare the combat scenes to the 2011 trailer seen here: https://youtu.be/YiIx9VJWSl8?t=3m31s).

I'm opening myself up to the same disappointment Square Enix gives me time and time again, but it gives me hope that not much has been cut from the FFVS13 formula. Some of the stuff that has been cut so far has been replaced (supposedly improving the game) and just off the top of my head:

  • Replaced Stella with Luna (Couldn't give a crap less. They nearly look identical and they swear Luna is a better fit for the story.)
  • Replaced party switching with like four different types of team-up attacks (I'm also not as worried about this as I was, since Noctis was so incredibly OP compared to his companions it wouldn't be any fun to be them anyways. They could have had more useful companions but as they are now Noctis can already do everything they do and more).
  • Condensed the planned sequels into one story to span only this game.

But what worries me are the aspects of the tone and atmosphere that seem to have been cut since it was made into a mainline FF game.

Compare the original reveal trailer (https://youtu.be/ACSpgGAjGfM, the first 2 minutes of this video), which was absolutely dripping with atmosphere and melancholy theming from the music to the visuals and actions playing out on screen, with the Dawn 2.0 trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWdUrKlV51A). The Dawn 2.0 trailer is obviously supposed to be conveying some sort of feelings or themes, but I just don't find it as compelling.

All foot soldiers in armor with guns have been replaced with robots, which one could assume to be to avoid any blood shed, which was prominently displayed in the 2006 reveal. Tabata also said that the reaper worship in Lucis (referring to how each nation apparently has a summon that they worship, with the bad guys (Niflheim) having bahamut, Accordo having leviathan, and so forth) was cut. Lucis used to worship death, but since it was taken out it will probably either be "the Goddess" (who was thought to be etro back when the game was still using Fabula Nova Crystallis, but now the game's use of the mythology is ambiguous) or something to do with sleep since Noctis and his father has both been shown at times to be "tired" in a way that implies it is important to their stories. Either way I'm a little disappointed.

Interestingly, the dudebro buddy road-trip vibe has been there since at least 2008 (https://youtu.be/ACSpgGAjGfM?t=4m25s).

All that rambling aside, I really don't know what to think of the game. I had written it off, but with the new trailer I am stupidly hoping that it wasn't altered as much from the original as I thought. IMO, this game absolutely needs something in its plot or character development to set it apart from other recent Final Fantasies (13's friendship crap and all that), preferably a dark or tragic twist. I know a lot of people don't enjoy Nomura's work, but I just hope switching leadership, budget, and focus (not to mention the enormous scale of all the people working on XV) hasn't lead the game to become overly generic in order to appeal to as many people as possible.

General Discussion / FFVI Steam Release
« on: 2015-12-08 19:31:30 »
In case you do not know, FFVI is coming to steam on December 16th, 2015. It looks like it is a pc port of the controversial iOS "remaster", however.

General Discussion / FF7 Remake general thread
« on: 2015-12-05 17:38:27 »
The gameplay for the FF7 remake has been revealed and it looks a lot like FFXV, Kingdom Hearts, and the original FFVS13 trailers...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPoOWVhSgys

Edit: Actually, after watching it again, some of the things I've noticed are:

The English voice actors are the same as from Advent Children.

Unfortunately, the design Cloud has is very much like Advent Children, in the worst way.

The movement, especially navigating narrow spaces, seems very similar to FFXV.

Even though they have not shown a lot of gameplay, it at first appeared to be real time, but I suppose there is a sliver of hope that it still could be something reminiscent of FF12, FF13, or Resonance of Fate, where it was very stylish but still turn-based. There was not enough gameplay in my opinion to really tell one way or the other. But this is Nomura, and the notable games he's worked on are KH and FFVS13, so the chance that this game will not be like them is very slim.

General Discussion / Square Enix Current Gen Lineup
« on: 2015-08-09 16:33:44 »
Excluding western games such as Hitman, Sleeping Dogs (western?), and Tomb Raider, Square Enix's lineup for the PS4/XBOX One generation already seems much more robust than the entirety of the PS3/Xbox 360 gen. Already announced games include: FFXV, FF7R, KH3, DQ11, SO5, PS4 Dissidia, World of Final Fantasy, and a new Nier project.

FFXV has its controversies but I still doubt it will have a worse reception than the XIII trilogy.

FF7R will definitely have its controversies, but probably an equally large number of fans, similar to how AC was poorly received by many yet still has legions of fans.

KH3 is the final entry in a saga fans have been clamoring for during years and years of spin off titles.

DQ11 looks to be incredible and a saving grace for those that feel betrayed by Square Enix's abandonment of turn-based RPGs for consoles.

Star Ocean 5 looks to be another quality entry in the franchise. I've only really had experience with 4, and it wasn't really my cup of tea, although I did enjoy aspects of it.

PS4 Dissidia has been requested for a long time, as people wanted their favorite FF characters to clash on a bigger screen than what the PSP could offer.

World of Final Fantasy, seems like it could be fun, but it's definitely milking nostalgia in order to get people to buy the game. It has a cute factor that will probably attract a lot of fans to it who are into that sort of thing.

And finally, the new Nier project had details that made me very excited about the game. I personally felt that Nier was a very fun game with a lot of good ideas. The writing in particular had a certain charm and flavor I seek more of (I bought Drakengard 3 in hopes to satiate my appetite, but I haven't tried it yet. Most reviews say the writing is certainly not on par with Nier). The only problems Nier had, in my opinion, was its combat and budget. Square Enix making the statement that new IPs need 3 entries to truly gauge their appeal gives me hope that Nier will have a larger budget, and it was annouced that Platinum games was developing it, which should make the combat amazing if Bayonetta and MGR are any indication.

In addition to those games, it seems as though Square Enix is planning on a FF12 HD remaster in addition to the FF10 and Type 0 remasters already released.

I personally feel Square Enix has been a lot more competent this generation as opposed to last, and seems like it has set itself up in a position to succeed. I know a lot of us prefer SquareSoft to Square Enix and rightly so, but compared to early Square Enix, does anyone else feel like things are changing over at Square Enix, and somewhat for the better?

Hello, I have accumulated several 2.5" internal hard drives over the years from various laptops and consoles from upgrading their drives. I have been wanting to put them to use in a multi-bay enclosure, but have run across a couple questions in order to find what I'm looking for. Most multi-bay enclosures are for 3.5" hard drives, so 2.5" hard drives will need an adapter. There are both adapters that do two 2.5" to one 3.5", or ones that do one 2.5" to one 3.5".

My questions are as follows:

1. Can a two 2.5" to one 3.5" work in a multi-bay enclosure and utilize both those drives? ( Can this

http://www.amazon.com/Silverstone-Tek-3-5-Inch-Converter-SDP08/dp/B002BH3Z8E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1413764036&sr=8-3&keywords=2.5+to+3.5+adapter

work in this

2. If not, would a regular 2.5" to 3.5" adapter work as intended?

3. Am I going about this the wrong way? What would be the most effective way of utilizing these extra internal hard drives?

tl;dr: I have a bunch of 2.5" that I would like to utilize, and am thinking about using a multi-bay enclosure. Am looking for best way to go about it or a better alternative. (I have already thought about selling them, obviously)

EDIT: My computer is acting strange, probably because of my connection. So I apologize ahead of time for any weird errors it may cause.

Completely Unrelated / PS4-PSVita Remote Play
« on: 2013-12-30 00:24:16 »
Since I am having issues and you guys seem to be fairly technologically adept, I was wondering if anyone on these forums could explain to me exactly how to set up port mapping on an Apple Airport Extreme router so that I can access my PS4 away from home via the internet. I have found several guides showing how to use UPnP, but since Airport Extreme doesn't use it the mapping is a bit more complicated for me. So far I found nothing that works and literally no one who knows enough to help me. Thanks very much in advance for anyone willing to help

Edit 1: I have read another place that it may be possible to piggy back another router that does use UPnP from the Airport Extreme and use that to connect to the PS4, but I don't know if it is true. Nor do I know if there will be any major latency issues with going from ISP router to Airport Extreme to New UPnP router to PS4.

General Discussion / New Game+
« on: 2011-08-17 19:39:51 »
Sorry if this topic has already been created and the idea already discussed, but I was wondering if it was possible to have a new game+ feature to ff7.

It would be pretty pointless for the original ff7 to have a new game+ but if you could have multiple difficulty levels in a rebalance mod you could take your save from like a medium difficulty and use it to start a new hard difficulty playthrough.

Doing that may seem like a waste of time because you might as well start another playthrough on the same difficulty, but if your stuff from the first playthrough would be a necessity for the second, and you could maybe get bonus items from the second that are really powerful, it might make an interested progression system.

On second thought, I still wouldn't mind just having a new game+ feature for the original ff7. I understand it would probably be unrealistic for the amount of coding that would need to be done,  but it was something I always felt was missing from final fantasy games.

Archive / [REL] Vincent Boot Fix
« on: 2011-05-29 02:36:06 »
This is just a mod I made because I've always hated Vincent's winklepicker boots. It replaces Vincent's original boots with black, slightly more normal looking ones. If nothing else they're not as blatantly noticeable. The battle model will switch death sentence model with whichever gun Vincent's magnum is because I thought twirling a rifle also looked dumb. I can easily switch it back if someone actually wants this mod and doesn't like that aspect.

(In game - field)

(Hojo remembering the old boots)

(In game - battle)

Pre-installation:

Make a backup of your battle.lgp and char.lgp.

Installation:

1. Download Aali's lgp and unlgp. There is a tutorial for them but for the lazy use lgp frontend.

2. Create two folders called "char" and "battle".

3. Unlgp your char.lgp and battle.lgp into the respective folders.

4. Place files from "Vincent" folder into "char" folder, and place the files from the three other folder labeled "Vincent - Battle(1, 2, or 3)" into the "battle" folder. When asked to replace files say yes to all.

5. Use lgp on "char" folder and replace "char.lgp" and use lgp on "battle" folder to replace "battle.lgp".

General Discussion / Link to Kimera .93
« on: 2011-02-14 00:38:20 »
I apologize in advance for this question but can anyone direct me to a link to Kimera .93? I've searched for quite a while now and have found two links to filefront, neither of which seem to be working.

I have been editing FF7 using a combination of Kimera .91 and .95, since .95 can't save textures and .91 doesn't keep track of your work.

If someone could direct me to a link to .93 or a version that does indeed save textures and keep track of your work I would greatly appreciate it.
