ISSUES:  At 2048x2048px, loading times cause jagged lag; textures are 1024, which isn't ideal, but MUCH BETTER than the 256px originals.

Great job here. I've not tested it yet but it's a great step for FF8 modding. Have a nice holiday !

Okay so I am running into some issues. Mainly if i go into the menu on the world map the textures will disappear until I complete my next battle.

Weird.  I'm going to test mine to see if that's an issue.  If not, I wonder if it has something to do with all of the squall textures in objmap.  Do you guys have any other mods installed?  This should work with Tripod, SeeD Reborn, and Project Eden... not sure if it works with Shunsq's character replacement project...

Other than that glaring issue, is there anything else you guys have found?

Can confirm that issue others are having. Have to enter then exit a battle/area to reset the textures. I have seed reborn, tripod, project eden, and RaW. Although I doubt that last one will matter. Also I noticed that while on the Ragnarok the textures are vanilla then as soon as stepping off they are upscaled. They will switch back and forth while boarding/disembarking. Hope this helps somehow! Still luh u.

Yeah... it looks like the game pops into downscaled textures whenever that happens for some reason... I will work on a fix, but this is some strange behavior.  similar issues with the cloudy sky backdrop and the world map.  Progress ensues! At least is breaks nothing... lol

Well it's all trial and error, processes and software for texture replacement modifications or modifications for FF8 in general are still in very early alpha stages so it's no surprise to see such bugs poping up around this time,
I'm very impressed with how fast FF8 is becoming moddable though
hopefully oneday someone will decode Main_Chr.FS and we can begin replacing FF8 field models and not only the textures.

However I have dones some tests before and it would be possible to replace battle models with entirely different reconstructions.

My tests were using Deling and exporting renaming and importing different battle model files and the effect was Squall became Laguna, Zell became SeeD Exam Zell and Selphie, became SeeD Exam Selphie.

Very interesting stuff to be honest

I would recommend merging this topic with the berrymapper topic, because, doing this mod on your own would take a HELL of a lot of time, I already merged my topic with it and also- the more people on-board the better :) I feel like more people refer to that topic, and I think releasing packs when we have ALL of the areas/characters textured might be the better option.. Considering we are in the alpha, nearing beta stages!

Good work with the world textures though! Keep it up :) I don't have access to my main PC at the moment so I can't be any help with the textures until I come home again, you should really get in touch with Crestian/Shunsq/Mago and other artists and collab together to work on the project rather than tackle it on your own, as much as you'd get all the credit n' all! It would just be beneficial/save a lot of time in the process :)

Thanks!   I originally considered posting this in the berry mapper thread but that thread is now flooded with several projects... so I made one just for the world textures and posted there about this thread.   I agree with you on the point of working together so please contribute whatever you can!  Everyone will get credit where it is due :)
That brings up a great point.  The towns are going to be my last step in each area, so if any of you would like to contribute,  that would be a great step forward!

I think this post would do nicely as a focused thread that can deal with its own troubleshooting etc as it progresses.  I've already done more than half of the world landscape textures and hashing all on my own in a week so i know a finished 'product' isn't far away.  we just have to figure out how to prevent he game animations from lagging so hard now... and I think I have a fix for the texture swapping.

I feel like each main project should have its own release page until more of them are completed, and then we put everything together.  If someone is working diligently on Battle Fields, Summons, or Magics, I feel that there should be a place for them to focus on the project, but they should probably go in the 'graphical mods' section for now.  I posted this in the 'releases' thread because it is just that -- an 'alpha' 1.0 release.

I feel like the Tonberry Mods, once fully realized, should be given an installer platform so that the FF8 fans can pick their mods - and I really feel like we should all be working together towards the goal of having an easy to install, easy to enjoy mod package for all. :)

Very soon!

I tried to replace the ocean, but the game lags so hard it becomes almost unplayable.  Anyone have any ideas?
I'm going to leave it alone and focus on the first two towns - then a video.

I'm guessing that if this is possible towns and the remote Balamb garden would be possible as well!

Used the mod and went to balamb wm and works great! Good job on this . But it slowdowns a little bit for me, is that a general problem of mod compatibillity or it slows because the rescale needs a good machine to take it ? I have tripod, seed reborn, pj eden, RaW and the Character Txt replacement . Is any of those not compatible?

If you are using the world map squall replacement, you might see more lag than if you're just using the world texture replacement, but there is some lag on the world map.  It might help if your processor is nice, but if I were you, I would try to set the processor affinity for FF8 to CPU 0 in the task manager - it might clear up a few things.

Thanks for the really fast reply. I figured out the problem, my pc was just strained from the modding and after i defraged a bit and restarted it works really well now, even with the character mod. Great job on this and thanks again for your reply.

Just created an account to let you know that the ad.fly links on all of your stuff are giving a "link deleted" message. Found this site through your YouTube channel, and am hoping to play FF8 as enhanced as possible. Your work is amazing.

Edit : Realized it was the fault of an anti-linkbucks plugin for Chrome. Disabled all kinds of stuff, as this is obviously something I want to support.

is it my understanding that you have retextured the whole map but all the towns and areas look the same except for balamb?

just trying to understand your wording that you had in the start of the thread.

what about things like flying gardens, trains etc.

i'd love to see more screenshots of all these things.

I think you have done a great job so far.

I retextured Balamb - the entire first continent, but NOT Balamb Garden or Balamb Town.  The rest of the map has been given a 4x upscale (pretty much like Omzy's Project Eden).   Crestian and I were working on a Balamb Garden, and he has a version of Ragnarok that's pretty sweet.   I'd actually love to retexture the rest of the world at some point, but currently, I'm working hard on my own textures for a project that demands most of my time.

oh right I see, but don't the other continents use the same grass and mountains anyway?

well, anyway the custom textures made a huge difference, do you have a screenshot of the other continents which just got an upscale, as you know ff8 had that wierd overworld map problem where you could see deviders all the time, maybe you mod would fix that, I don't know.

Hm.  I think I can fix that yellow/white line artifact, but the hexagons of Balamb being crappy is actually an issue with the original PC game walkmesh.  They don't look like that at -all- in the textures, but when they get placed on the towns, they have strange seams.  Actually, I think the UV is off for the entire game.

I'll release an update with the 'line' fix asap.

Any way to use the upscaled Balamb continent instead of the one you created? I rather have it all original and upscaled instead of having only one continent done. It would also be good to know in case of other glitches.

For future reference, this is a UV mapping issue... not an issue with Mcindus' work. Luckily there is a fix here! (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=16327.msg232775#msg232775)

Anywho, I'm having an issue with the railroad tracks by Balamb (haven't checked the other continents yet). It seems the "straight" pieces of track still have the old texture. It's strange because the "junction" piece works perfect... even the "straight" peices that connect the "junction" to the "train station" in Balamb are the new texture. Is this a hashing issue? I know the texture is there, I even double checked the tile sheet (wm_texpg2_13). I've tried even resetting my computer if this was just a fluke.

Exactly. I wasn't going to work on them until a UV patch - and now that it's out, I have a couple of small fixes to make to keep things seamless and can finally finish the roads/tracks

As messaged to MCINDUS:

The yellow seam (on land) and the tree seem were indeed UV issues, if you patch properly they will disappear. HOWEVER, they will be replaced with this on every land mass.

HAPPY HUNTING MCINDUS :P

Hi McIndus !

I am a great fan of your work on FF8.
I was wondering if you were planning to release an upscaled version of the Balamb area : as much as I like the new textures, I would like to have the original upscaled ones and the possibility to make a choice, but I am not skilled enough to do it by myself (^^).

I also read some months ago that you were planning on releasing the Esthar area ? I have to admit that I am a bit lost between all these projects.

With many thanks,

Hello!  I'm putting together a new release of HorizonPack today, so hopefully I'll be able to put the finishing touches on it right now.  The next release will be an original upscale, touched up by myself.  I think I will release the 'replacements' as I finish them as different packs.  Some things had to be replaced (railroad bridges, railways, roads, etc.) but this was due to the upscale process being somewhat unreliable when it comes to upscaling such small textures.
As this pack progresses, I hope someone will take the opportunity to replace the buildings!  They need the most level of detail, but would add a -huge- element to the map.

Next release includes entire upscale for:

world map with detail edits (including Esthar)
world textures (not including the ocean - it's glitchy)
the world sky
complete roads replacement (tentative)

EDIT:
Having some issues with the Esthar textures and two of the roads textures - going to finish/progress tomorrow.

Hey Mcindus,

Some stellar work that you've done. I'm playing through now and these mods have breathed new life into a game I've played  a million times.

You mentioned in the above post that an update to this was imminent. Is it still on the cards? Did something happen?

Yes, I am currently underway and the project looks great.  Thanks :)  Currently Ifrit, Shiva, Brothers, Quetzalcoatl, and Leviathan have been overhauled - but the rest of the GF's have been upscaled.  I'm going to put some TLC into Hellfire, so that it has some consistency.

Also - check the Original Post --  HorizonPack v3.0 has been RELEASED!

Noticing two new issues. The first is the roads are vanilla, I don't think they converted, at least in the starting Balamb area, I'm only that far in my playthrough.( Also I lost your new textures for the balamb school/ area, that is intentional correct?) The second is that sometimes my squall world model will have the outline of a black square underneath his feet. Like 4 black lines around his feet that meet in a rectangle. I am using fated courages/mago's world model for squall, wondering if it's not playing nice together with this. Or maybe it's just my shitty laptop that is not really meant for gaming.

Also the seams on forests and some other textures but I see you are aware of that one.

Other than these issues, loving the mod! Thank you once again.

You mean the road goes back to low resolution? Odd... I've tested that area so many times. :P Perhaps I missed a variable. If you can post a screenshot, then I can tell you if it really is.

As for the black squares, it's probably missing hashes for his  upscaled shadow? Was never sure why it bugs out like that, but I think getting the hashes for them should fix it? I'll check into that.

Did you make sure do delete the old hashmap??  You shouldn't just copy/replace the old mod - you should outright delete it before you install this new version!  They will definitely cause conflicts.

Also - the seams is an issue with the game UVs.  Maki did a nice fix, but it doesn't quite fix them all the way.  He's currently working on a better UV fix, and Balamb, Timber, Galbadia, and the mountain zone will see a huge benefit when he does.

And yes, I removed the 'new' textures from the Balamb area due to the mod being inconsistent with them... This is a full vanilla upscale.  The only things that were completely 'replaced' were the roads.

Yes, I just overwrote didn't delete. Thank you, I'll delete the old version and re-install the new version and let you know how it works. I'll take a screenshot for fated courage if the roads are still ugly after.

Okay, thank you.

Makes sense to me, I prefer the consistency as well.

Ah - this is because you aren't implementing Maki's current UV fix. I HIGHLY reccomend it.  I'm not sure what's going on with the shadow.... I'll have to test it out.  What disc are you on? At what point in the game are you?  Are you using the English version?

Okay thank you, Maki's UV fixed everything except the black square under squalls feet in world map. Roads and whole world looks much better, no seams/blocks.

It also lets me alt-tab in and out! Before Maki's fix whenever I alt tabbed out and then back in it would show a mish mash of textures over a black screen. Like the texture pics for mods.

Edit: Sometimes alt-tabbing still causes this issue, but doing it a few times fixes it.

Hey all!
I'm having a bit of an issue after updating Horizon Pack, SeeD Reborn, and Project Hellfire.  After I enter a battle and finish the battle (Whether escaping or killing all enemies) the mini map is reverting back to its OLD self.  This never used to happen before i updated those 3 mods.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Sounds like missing hashcodes... Though, I was sure I got most for battles. Where are you at and what enemies were you fighting? Or is it literally after every battle? Because that shouldn't happen.

I was in the Trabia region.  Its on again off again, meaning some times it will revert back.  then i'll get into another battle and it will fix itself.  but last area i was at was on DISC 2 Trabia Garden snow area.  Also i forgot to put this in my last post, but im getting a black border around balamb garden mobile. I'm trying to figure out how to attach a screenshot.  I was thinking I might just do a fresh install of all mods etc.  but just trying to avoid that.

As for your Garden issue, reinstalling won't help. Methinks Mcindus left the wrong texture in place by accident. Since there is one in the folder that is transparent (I checked). So, you can wait until he either fixes it or just go in and change the name yourself.

Hey guys I seem to have a problem with my World Map Textures.

https://imgur.com/a/MSPlQ - This is what all the forests in my world map look like. I have used the uv patcher.

Is there a fix for this? What might have I done wrong during the modding process?

EDIT: So in the launcher turning off linear filtering fixes this issue. There is a slight flash that lasts a millisecond of a white line in the forests and sometimes the ground. This flash is in the same spots the huge white line in my picture was im assuming this is normal but just want to ask here and make sure.

Yeah, actually there are a lot less glitches like this using the UV patcher and linear filtering turned off.  If you play the game without the UV patcher, things look... bad.  This 'flash' may be the game loading the new texture/fixing UV?  not sure... you should try putting the /textures folder on a SSD and directing tonberry to that folder using the prefs.txt file in /tonberry

Awesome I already have my game on an ssd so it looks like what im experiencing is normal, I noticed the same thing on other modders games on youtube after posting so I am relieved knowing that its normal and not some mistake I made. Before turning off the filtering it was really bad but since turning it off the small flashes every now and then as the new textures are loaded are not a problem.

Thanks again for all your hard work on these mods and thank you for helping me out with my questions!

Make sure you're using the latest version of Tonberry and try to increase your cache size in prefs.txt.  Might also help if you don't have any other monitoring apps open that use DirectX.  The only -real- lag I get is sometimes when the train is whizzing by - this is because of the replacement of the animation sprites.  Things might go faster if you get rid of the files for the overworld train.

and and how i get rif the file of the overworld train ?

PD: I made it increase the cache to 350 ( i dont know if is dangerous or not but seems little less lag now i hope nothing explodes lol )

You can use a memory extender to prevent crashes with a large cache... i forget which one most people use.  Also, the faster your HDD, the less lag you'll get. you should try it on a SSD.  very fast.

Excuse me for bringing the topic back to life but this is getting on my nerves ...

No matter what I do I cannot get the mod to work, even tried on a clean installation of the game (ES version) with the same results, even tried it along with Maki's UV Texture Patch with the same result, Maki's patch worked flawlesly but nothing seemed to change with the Horizon mod.

Clean installation of the game, Tonberry Enhanced 2.04 (tried with and without Tonberry 1.3 Hashmaps), copied both folders to textures folder and the hashmap to hashmaps folder; what can I do to get it working? (W10 x64 Fall Creators Update)

Thanks guys, honestly I don´t know what else to do ...

EDIT: Only thing that seems to work are the redesigned maps, rounded, small and the big one

Can you show me some screenshots of before/after?  To disable the mods, just rename the textures folder to textures0 or something like that and run the game (you can still use the ultra launcher to enable the UV fix, but it's up to you)

Believe it or not I fixed it by playing around with the Tonberry files, I think it had to be with hash1map.csv, hash2map.csv, collisions.csv or objfile.csv ... I overwritten one of those files and magically it started working, maybe one of those files was outdated or something like that or I had a mix of an old version of Tonberry files mixed with the newer ones, THANKS A LOT for your interest!!!

Luckly it's working flawlessly now, great mod!!!

I'm having problems with the world map (globe and translucent) reverting after battles as well as the Balamb Garden (mobile) texture reverting after battles.  So far with the world maps, it reverted after random battles with Fastatocilon-F on Balamb beaches in Disk 1 (not every battle with them, just random ones) and Mesmerize and Snow Lion near Shumi Village in Disk 2.  The Balamb Garden texture has reverted after battles with Mesmerize as well outside of Shumi Village, but did stay the same after my battle with Snow Lion.  Also I watched the Youtube video above and for some reason my forests have never looked like what was shown.
Current Version:
Horizon Pack 3.0
Tonberry 2.04
FFVIII on Steam

Interesting!  I didn't want to have it on the movable vehicle so that it would match the old texture, so I removed it from Crestian's, but if you go back a few pages, the one with the blue ring exists on his original, so the best combo of this would be your two world map textures with the updated blue ring, but to use Crestian's model from a couple of years ago (further back in these posts) for the blue ring around the vehicle version.  Honestly, I just want to replace these town models because they are -terrible- (they were amazing for their time).  we could have so much better these days.

Oh man, I have always hated Squall's outfit, I would love to have him permanently in SeeD / SeeD Exam uniform.

It's kinda as soon as we can. Some of them are easy because the remaster has the files and we just replace them. But some of them are harder. Thing with all 2013 mods have Tonberry to work with, and tonberry doesn't work in the remaster. So it'll take more time for the community to find workarounds. Once the community finds a way to load the textures it's a simple matter of porting the textures from one game to the other. Just need that new tool/hack to come along.

no problem, i always wanted to inject the modded textures directly in to the game,  so if it take more time to get that result in this remaster then is ok , i never liked the solution of tonberry , while i am enjoying very much the triple triad modded textures and the seed reborn modded textures quite because we can finally inject them in to the game , so the game doesn't have any choice but to load them correctly since after all those are the very only thing at disposal for that specific part of the game , but were are located the textures of the world map elements in the remastered version ? i am taking a look right now

yes, some are pixelated blobs that are a part of the background images pretty much...
lotsa photoshop etc work to do for the ones that can be hidden via hidden certain layers before the initial export + file conversion... "Remastered" is still using stock field.fs for now...

exactly , and after listening to a small interview , here is one reason why they are so careless with their better game for this series: because according to them the "fantasy" genre should be about the fucking medieval period and the classic fairy tales , but that's quite the point about be creative and original, it is also about do something really fantasious , infact the good thing about final fantasy 8 is quite the fact that is show a world based on the classic fantasy genre ported in a futuristic time , i mean god fucking damn it , for final fantasy 9 they put real passion and interest for the steam version , while for this version they don't even care about make the game compatible with the 16:9 o.O , fuck , still , the modders here are making a better work even compared to the remastered version of final fantasy 9 :D

It's a missing texture coordinate for a UV texture that the PC version screwed up. It's part of the original PC port -_-

[/quote]

those fucking idiots really got careless with this game , to think that it is the best of the final fantasy saga, as i said in another post, they basically got careless because final fantasy 8 isn't the classic rpg game based on the medieval period, so yeah , that's the reason for all the technical flaws , and it is the reason why the steam version of final fantasy 9 don't need any graphical modification , because you know, final fantasy 9 is essentially the interactive version of a damn classic fairy tale, so they considered it worthy of their passion o.O

@Mcindus talking about technical flaws of the pc version, remember the transition effect that you get in the psx version when a boss fight begin? if so , can you port it in the remastered pc version ? as you noticed in any pc version you barely see two frames that transit in the screen , but the rest of the transition effect is missing , sorry if i am vague but english is my second language and i don't know how do you call that effect in english

Hopefully you will fix that, since above i read many people liking the work so i suppose it actually DOES work, it's just an uploaded file matter.

Try opening it in winrar or 7zip. sometimes, one program flags it damaged and one opens it just fine.  I can confirm it works fine after unpacking on my end.

Thank you very much for this mod, looks fantastic. The only problem is the damn bug with the Steam version of FF8 where the world map significantly reduces in quality if you bring up the menu (and you're obviously going to be doing that often while you're playing). Is there a fix for this issue somewhere in these forums? I already applied the UV fix, but it's unrelated.

Hey there,

This looks like a great mod, however, after I install the texture and tonberry folders, the game is still not updating to the new textures. Any idea as to why this may be? I have gotten all the other mods installed and working correctly, this is the only one that does not seem to want to work.

Thanks for your help.

Hm.  Make sure the horizonpack hashmap from the tonberry/hashmap folder in the mod made it into your FINAL FANTASY VIII/tonberry/hashmap folder and replaced the old one.  Also, make sure the /textures/hp folder made it into FINAL FANTASY VIII/textures/ and let me know.

I got it working, thanks! I did a fresh install and installed all the mods again and then it seemed to work that time. Not sure what happened the first time. Great mod! 😊

MOD UPDATED!

Texture pack is now available for the 2019 REMASTERED version of FF8!

Requires Maki's demaster tool - and try to make sure your game is on an SSD! DDS Texture pack will be available for the Remaster as soon as the Demaster is updated to a newer version, which will remove any page loading lag you may encounter!

ENJOY!

Thanks for the great work! Everything looks awesome. I guess the cities and towns are the only thing left for this horizonpack mod?

Glad it finally works for the remaster, great job! But the hires world map graphics (the one in the corner that shows where you are) aren't there - it's still the original remaster version. Were those done, too? How do we get them in?

Am I missing something? I downloaded the horizonpack remastered and there in no tonberry file only the textures folder. I installed it into the DEMASTER EXP folder but the textures are still the same in game.

I have an issue with Deeling City on world map. It looks like this.

MCINDUS: You need to disable the sky texture located in textures/world/dat/wmset and then grab that new roads texture below and drop it in. Make sure you click on open original and save it from the browser window for correct size.

Found an issue with this mod and couldn't find anyone mention it. On disk 4, when you take a portal by the chain back to the world map, the portal structure to go back to the castle is missing. You can still take it if you know the exact location but I had to disable the mod to see it.

Can't download the vanilla upscale (old version). Does anyone have a working link?
