Unfortunately there are no games to play with...

Lovely yewles1 (aka "The homeless gamer") put some word on this with the title:

Seeing as I'm not an infant who is endangered by the 3D feature and I'm not broke, I will be getting the 3DS XL once more games come out.

The 3DSXL's construction seams to be much stuirder then the regular 3DS if i were going to buy a 3ds i would also get the XL.

Just get a 3DS and remove the 3D function? Nintendo, don't bullshit your fans like this :|

It's reasonable. It cost a lot less and plays 3DS games. I just have no reason to not get the XL. But for people who are sensitive to the 3D and/or want a cheaper alternative this is a great choice.

This would be great for very young children if the trigger buttons weren't so far away from the controls. Not having the clam shell design makes the unit a bit more durable. The youngins could play Disney Infinity all day without snapping the thing in half.

Massive "Human Factors Design" flaw.  Made a product for a target audience only to make it more difficult for that audience to use.  Then again, if everything was always perfect, there'd be no room for improvement - hence no room for more profit in the future...so Good Job!

Also, Oh Covarr...surely you agree Gatsby and Fitzgerald are highly overrated!

In the uk this costs roughly the same as an ordinary 3ds or if you find offers on the 3ds this is more expensive, totally not worth getting this over any of the 3ds's

I actually find this mildly tempting as I could easily throw down the reduced cost for it, and I have no interest in the 3D functionality, having tried it on several occasions, very instantly leading to nausea. (hopefully the rift does it better...)

I own a 3DS and I can tell you I rarely play with the 3D on and it's more distracting than interesting. Yes, it's 3D, but it's not GOOD 3D. I mostly play with it off so I see the appeal of this. What I DON'T get is why they made this so poorly designed. It's a solid piece that can no longer fit in a pocket. The 3DS fits comfortably in all my pockets but this looks too large to even get in a pocket.

That aside, I think this is still a viable alternative for users that don't want the 3D. It's cheaper, can play the 3DS and DS games, and still has wifi. This is NOT a bad thing for Nintendo to offer this OPTION. Why all the hate on it? No one's making you buy it and they're not pushing it as the "next hand-held generation". I will likely get a 3DSXL eventually once the game library gets a little bigger (though I will still keep my 3DS for sentimental reasons).

Why all the need for a second stick too? The current games don't have any need for it. The only game I can think MIGHT have benefited from it is KI:U which did better with the touch screen.

As I already have a 3DS XL and love the larger screens (I even love the 3D) I will not be getting this for myself. That said, I may get my mom one for Christmas. She really wants Pokémon X and/or Y, and the timing for this is absolutely perfect.

I assume the new Zelda will be playable, since it's compatible with all 3DS games? If so, I think this is a good, cheaper alternative.

From having played the new Zelda game at PAX AU, I can assure you that 3D is very much desired on that title :P

She plays a lot of games. Pokémon, Minecraft, The Sims, occasionally Mario Kart... Her big claim to fame, however, is that she beat Zelda 2. Even I couldn't pull that off.
