Title: Aali's driver [v 0.7.8b] Help/Bugs/Suggestions
Post by: arew264 on 2010-06-20 17:19:54
http://backup.ninjaloot.se/share/ff7_opengl-0.7.8b.zip (http://backup.ninjaloot.se/share/ff7_opengl-0.7.8b.zip)

Installation
1. Extract the archive into your ff7 or ff8 folder
FF7:
2a. Run the modified FF7Config, pick custom driver in the list of renderers, you should get confirmation that the driver is working.
3a. Change your settings in ff7_opengl.cfg
FF8:
2b. Make sure EAX is properly installed (run EAXUnified.exe to install it if unsure)
3b. Change your settings in ff8_opengl.cfg
4. Play!

Changelog

  • 9999 limit break patch is now incorporated as a config option. Functionality should be mostly the same as the original YAMP patch by dziugo, also the GUI changes necessary are applied by this option.
  • MDef patch is also a config option, this one is not based on the YAMP patch but the end result is exactly the same.
  • Added support for subtractive (mode 2) and 25% incoming color (mode 3) blending and fixed the field files who were supposed to use them. Mode 3 is noticeable already in the first reactor, those code panels were not supposed to be that bright :) A very noticeable example of subtractive blending is the cat-and-mouse game in the temple of the ancients, where there used to be a mysterious white light in the caves there is now darkness as in the PSX version.
  • Popup error/glitch messages could fade away before you had a chance to see them, that is no longer the case.
  • Corrected filenames used to load field textures from the modpath.
  • Missing external textures can no longer crash the game.
  • Every texture is checked against max texture size/NPOT texture support to produce more helpful error messages.
  • Added a big warning message for when Windows reverts to using the software OpenGL renderer.
  • FF8 will now display a glitch message and a blank screen during moves if you are missing NPOT texture support instead of just making the screen completely white.
  • Where possible, removed the gray line that could show up during movies.
  • Fixed a problem with modpath not respecting LGP subdirectories.
  • Fixed a problem that could crash the game if a file could not be found inside an LGP archive.
  • Fixed a problem that would crash the game if a normal file could not be found.
  • Fixed the "wind.wav" (and any other .wav file) crash.
  • Fixed the wave "music" (usually background noise) that was missing if you were using a music plugin.
  • Removed the wine version of the ff7music plugin, it is no longer necessary as of wine version 1.1.35
  • Fixed a problem that could crash the game if a missing or broken battle .hrc file was loaded.
  • Window title is now "Final Fantasy VII" instead of "DEFAULT" in window mode.
  • Movies too big to fit into a texture are now skipped with an error message instead of producing a bunch of OpenGL errors.
  • Fixed the new battle interface glitch where battle models could overlap the GUI.

If you find any issues, please post screenshots, relevant information from app.log and if possible, a savegame.
If you get a crash, provide a copy of crash.dmp and app.log (preferably in a zip archive, this will make it 10x smaller)

That's a lot of fixes!
Thanks, Aali, I'll be trying this out shortly.

Thanks for the new version Aali. These fixes will help alot.
I just tested this and i managed to get through north crater without the game crashing (which i couldn't do with 0.7.7),
And Both the final battle Sephiroth and Odin don't end up infront of the menu which is nice.
And it also doesn't crash at the battle arena for me anymore, This is looking great.

I can't believe my "DEFAULT" mod has already been obsoleted.

I haven't actually played through the game in a long while, but I remember in the Temple of Ancients there were some problems with the field files being displayed incorrectly in the black materia room.  Does anyone know if this has already been fixed?

No bugs for me so far. And the gray line in FMVs was indeed fixed  :).

I kept getting people asking me about wind.wav, assuming that my knowledge of FF7Music carries over to all things audio related. This should significantly cut that down. Thanks! :)

Screenshot of the new blending. I always thought the white lights weren't a bug, but it did look a bit weird in such a dark place.

Damn sloppy PC port.

As far as i know as long as you had 0.7.7 you would get the wind.wav error even if you use FF7music (well i got the error when i tried using FF7Music and entering the north crater from the highwind on CD3, then again does FF7music cover the .wav files as well ? i thought it only did the midi but i could very well be wrong on this since i don't use FF7music by default)
But anyway it doesn't really matter now since like you say 0.7.8 fixes the problem.

Holy--- now that's a huge update! And it's working great until now, no crashes or errors! (yeah, had to test it before commenting too)
Can't say that i agree that with the 9999 limit break patch being included since it breaks the game original setup, but people who want to use it would just apply it anyway so it doesn't matter in the end.

Aali, something else might need some "fixing", idk if someone else feels really annoyed about this, but the in-game volume controls are far from perfect (Virtually unusable imo. The ones at the FF7config are also pretty bad too) and if i change the sound of the game using the Windows Volume Mixer it just keep resetting on zoning. Any change of including a master volume control? Just wanted to leave the game at 20% so i could multitask, otherwise its impossible to voice chat in the same computer as we play.

Already found a bug; modpath sometimes looks for files in weird places if direct mode is on. It should work as intended when direct mode is off, however.

They do here, are you using a french version? Nvidia or non-nvidia?

I'm curious, are there any maximum caps on this? dziugo's patch had configurable maximum caps, and defaulted to 30000.

i have tried this, and it appears to be the exact same as dziugo's patch, the cap is 30000 and if you try to go past this using HPplus materia you end up going back to 10HP

Yes, the default limit is 30000. You can change this with the settings new_hp_limit/new_mp_limit but you're on your own if you make it more than 30000, it's not going to work too well.

Title: Re: Aali's driver [v 0.7.8b] Help/Bugs/Suggestions
Post by: DLPB_ on 2010-06-22 22:21:02
No, the game has always been made to say "Could not sense" when HP of an enemy (any enemy) goes over around 40000.  Try it with Master Tonberry (44444) or Sephiroth or Emerald Weapon.
Title: Re: Aali's driver [v 0.7.8b] Help/Bugs/Suggestions
Post by: Aali on 2010-06-22 22:35:49
Exactly 40000? Can you sense an enemy with 39999 HP? It would make a lot more sense if the limit was at or under 2^15
Title: Re: Aali's driver [v 0.7.8b] Help/Bugs/Suggestions
Post by: Kudistos Megistos on 2010-06-22 23:35:39
IIRC, it was impossible to sense enemies with more than 30 000 HP, so it might have been an issue of not being able to sense more than 32767. However, my memory might be deceiving me here...
Title: Re: Aali's driver [v 0.7.8b] Help/Bugs/Suggestions
Post by: DLPB_ on 2010-06-23 03:55:03
I also thought about that, but I can't remember if I was able to sense that red dragon that drops the carob nut.  That has 33333.  So yeah it is possibly 32767. That would make sense.....[pun not intended]

Another modpath bug; the file extension is always stripped from filenames before loading anything from the modpath. In battle.lgp textures have names like cloud.t01, cloud.t02 etc which means they all end up loading the same texture from the modpath. I guess noone is using it for battle textures yet, but just in case you were planning on doing it, it probably wont work right.

just a question about the modpath, can you nest directories and it will still find files? For example:
worldmap texture is "grass01"
i place the grass01.PNG in "ff7/modpath/WMRP/grass"

would that work? sorry i don't have anything to test it on right now otherwise i simply would.

Not at the moment, no, whichever filename it prints with show_missing_textures is the one and only filename it will try. And although I wish it was somewhat better organized, I do not plan on going in that direction. (No, I don't have a better idea yet :P)

Is there a way to load several .dll's using load_library?
I can only seem to load one at a time.

Thanks.

Yay, no more annoying crashes related to wind.wav (direct mode)!!!
Thank you.

Also, what do you think about this feature (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=9868.msg142137#msg142137), Aali?

===========================

And again, I've got the same crash I've already described here (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=9868.msg142373#msg142373):

<APP log (http://shinra.ru/kein/ff7/2/app.log)>
<FF7music log (http://shinra.ru/kein/ff7/2/ff7music.log)>
<dump (http://shinra.ru/kein/ff7/2/crash.7z)>

In this time it happens ALWAYS on the same place, right when I start the fight with Giant Icicle in "Gaea's Cliff inside" or after few battles in that area. Any idea how can eliminate this bug? ;< I've already tried to change some GPU setting for ff7.exe, like, vsync, triple buffering, multithread mode, etc - nothing helps ;< And I can't update my drivers too (there is a reason., too much to explain).

Timber: Since there is to my knowledge only one mod floating around using this feature i can only assume you made the other .dll yourself. In this case, it should be a simple matter for you to add code loading the second dll from your own.

Kein: Doesn't really fit the scope of this driver, perhaps you should get a better window manager?

Post by: Kein on 2010-06-23 23:04:50
Ok, but whats' about that crash? I barely doubt it is nvidia's ogl drivers fault, since it is a first crash for me of some game/application based on OpenGL API. Old good 182.50 proved himself as a stable ones for a long period of  time.

This is a great new version. Just a suggestion for the next one, though : is it possible to add an option, in ff7_opengl.cfg, to remove the yellow and red notifications, at the bottom of the screen ? Like the "ERROR : could not open file AAAF2.RSD" and stuff ?

Otherwise, I noticed that you improved the GUI's transparency :) Even the submenus are transparent now. Very cool.

No I did not "improve the GUIs transparency", most likely you just didn't update the vertex shader.

Those messages are there for a reason, you will not see any of them with original data or wellbehaving mods. (Unless something really goes wrong)
There is a way to turn them off since 0.7.8b because after all it was not in the original game and so should be optional. The option is called disable_popup, turn it on and you will never see them again. I beg all of you modders out there to leave it off however so these issues will not continue to go unnoticed and end up in even more released mods.

Before you disable them, have you bothered the creators of any models you use about them? Those errors aren't there just to irritate you, they're there to make the mod-makers not publish incomplete or broken mods. I personally think that we'd all be happier in the long run if you couldn't turn them off.
Kill the messages if you must, but bother the mod-makers of any mods you have installed about the errors first.

Aali
Also, as I said, those crashes is not a driver's fault. Just for such sake I've installed bloated 257.xx and here it is:

<APP.log (http://shinra.ru/kein/ff7/3/app.log)>
<FF7music.log (http://shinra.ru/kein/ff7/3/ff7music.log)>
<dump (http://shinra.ru/kein/ff7/3/crash.7z)>

Something in your driver incorrectly uses some OGL API instructions. I wonder if we can debug it somehow...
Title: Re: Aali's driver [v 0.7.8b] Help/Bugs/Suggestions
Post by: Aali on 2010-06-24 02:34:11
Well, the crash is happening from a very standard draw call that hasn't changed at all the last 10 or so versions. So, either you have a broken model somewhere (can you reproduce with original data?) or there's something really weird going on.

Yeah the launcher still work, it's just convenient being able to bypass it :)
Don't worry about expanding it if it's too much effort, just wanted to know if there was a way to do it currently.

Also, the FPS overlay doesn't seem to work on FF8.

EDIT: Also in FF8 the battle transitions are just thin black lines, and Squall doesn't have a shadow on the world map.
I tested without the driver, and the battle transitions worked well, and Squall has a shadow (although the shadow looked messed up since without the driver the transparency doesnt seem to work)

Hey Aali, just thought of putting this also here since the bug I got is regarding Your newest release
Is TA's mod compatible with Aali's newest (0.7.8b) driver ? i'm asking cause I tried it today and dunno what goes wrong but can't install T.A.G.O. When installer is run I get this:
Aali's custom driver is not installed, or not installed correctly. please reinstall...
The game runs fine with Aali's driver, got no graphical problems just this :
ERROR: could not read from file c:\users\mefi\games\Final Fantasy 7\ff7input.cfg (0)
but i already created ff7input file.
Can this cause problem with compatibility to TAGO?
And how can I solve the ff7input prob, already tried deleting, and creating a new one.

This is because aali's newer drivers do not modify the registry the same way. the easiest fix is to download one of the older versions and run the ff7opengl.reg.

This is not a problem with aali's driver. it is a problem with the avalanche installer. The next avalanche release will not have this problem.

Well, the crash is happening from a very standard draw call that hasn't changed at all the last 10 or so versions. So, either you have a broken model somewhere (can you reproduce with original data?) or there's something really weird going on.
Any idea how I can find this broken model (if it's a cause)?

simple as that :) how about if I would like to change the positioning of the stats, boxes etc? (making side bar wider or location window more narrow, and reposition level or limit gauges)

I found a display problem with ff8:

The glass is transparent. I looked in ff8 data, so this glass is drawed with blendType = 2, and BGSHADE opcode was called.

Oh, and is there a hope that the next version correctly displays battle transitions?

He meant you can always just use the base game. Like the drivers that get installed when you install the game. That driver is called Direct X. :P. Aali's drivers are made to stabilize some of the issues that the Direct X drivers caused. Aali's drivers are far from complete, but they are definitely an improvement. In my opinion.

Is it supposed to look like Software Renderer and drastically reduce my FPS? Compare Software (http://i50.tinypic.com/2ppbmux.jpg) to Direct3D (http://i47.tinypic.com/dfu3v7.jpg) to OpenGL (http://i50.tinypic.com/imuixs.jpg).

After seeing things like this, I would have to disagree. Can anyone be more specific on the issues caused by Software Rendering or Direct3D Hardware Acceleration? The only notable bugs seem to have been introduced through the OpenGL driver.

It seems like this hurts FF8 more than it helps.

Not true. There's a few missing graphics, but this is the most compatible option.

I misread. He meant by using the driver some graphical bugs are introduced, but it's the most compatible option. But what is it the most compatible option opposed to?

I can't speak for FF8, but in FF7, the default driver didn't allow the resolution to be raised beyond 640x480. TheSaint made a patch that gave you two more resolution options, but it was fairly glitchy (on my machine, random objects would randomly be turned yellow until the entire screen was yellow). It was also fairly slow (although that was just because of FF7's outdated rendering methods, not the patch).
The OpenGL driver makes the lives of modders easier, allows for simpler content replacement, and adds a whole host of configuration options and expandability that were never present in any way in the original driver.
As I said, this is in FF7.

The short answer is that this is a one man volunteer project on games that are more than 10 years old. There will be glitches, and while the goal is to improve the experience, if you don't think it will help, just don't use it. The fact that Aali has managed to replace the entire rendering system is an achievement in itself, and the driver has been improving for quite some time now.

You said it yourself. You can't speak for FF8. It might help tremendously in FF7, but it seems to break things, more or less, in FF8. Also, you are sorely mistaken about replacing the API, it is already present.

And you misinterpreted it. I don't own FF8. I should have made that clear.

Yes, Square wrote in an API, but Aali discovered that API and wrote a driver that fills it completely, and he's added features that aren't really based on that API as well. I don't think you really understand what the term API means here. All it means is that Square set up a way for the game to communicate with a graphics driver. That communications method was undocumented and only used by the built-in default renderer, so I consider finding it and writing a driver that uses it successfully to be an achievement. Do you see any other replacement drivers around? Aali has put a lot of work into writing something that has pretty much revived FF7. As I said before, I don't own FF8.

I'd like to join the discussion as well. Thought all of this doesn't exactly deal with 'help/bugs/suggestions' (in that case this could be moved to another topic afterwards), it is something that has been bugging me for a while : Aali's driver vs. ff8 launcher. I think that's what smf052910 and many are asking as well. Hopefully your answers will make it less confusing...

Quote

Quote

I've been playing at FFVIII PC for several years on different computers and system. Never noticed a single crash, or any graphical issue. I have the feeling that most of the people that come to this forum are either looking for enhanced graphics, either having an issue due to a corrupted CD.

When you try the ff8 Launcher, you immediately see the difference with stock game. There are only very few issues : end of videos, Diablo summon, Edea magic for passing through the walls, vibrate effect (Gilgamesh, Griever preparing his most powerful attack, appearance of Ultimecia last form in a burst of magic & black feathers), menu textures....

Here is what I haven't managed to figured out despite reading a lot of the topics here on the subject, does Aali's driver allow the same enhanced 3D that the launcher, or does it just recreate more or less the original game?
For what I've understood, Aali's driver will allow the use of higher quality materials in future modding, but what of the time being?
What about a newbie that have original game already working, and come seeking how to run ff8 'better than ever', shouldn't he download the Launcher, unless he wants to contribute to Aali WIP project by reporting bugs and glitches? Or if Aali's driver is indeed able to do as good as the launcher, how do you configure the required file?

Enhanced 3D of FF8 Launcher? If you are talking about higher resolutions, then yes of course, Aali's driver supports it. Just edit the ff8_opengl.cfg file in Notepad or similar.

Thanks for answering my question Timber, it decided me to try again, and this time I found the trick... Always try yourself before asking - should I've remember this golden rule.

Linear_filter = on
Indeed, with this Magixt launcher is not needed anymore, althought with Aali's it does look more blurry.

There is just one minor thing... Well, those 5 new folders and 3 new files crownding my already-over populated ff8 directory... it would be a little less messy if all of them could be put in one single folder. Just a detail of course...

i just got FF7 running on this acer laptop, and the driver functions okay. Problem is, i cannot specify any resolution other than 640x480. I can run windowed and fullscreen at 640x480, but even if i go up to 800x600 i do not get any video. I can still hear the sounds playing, and i can move the selector hand up and down. As soon as i drop back to 640x480, i get video again.

I don't understand why you are using OpenGL when the client supports DirectX by default. I am working on something similar to your driver, using DirectX, and the only task I'm facing is centering the image.

Because opengl is documented much better and is better across platforms like linux I am guessing.  It doesn't always have to be the case that just because dx exists it has to be used.  There are reasons.

Plus Opengl is fine.  I think it all looks good and I don't need DX.

One main point Aali made a reference to was that Open GL doesn't have "poor backwards compatibility" (or something like that). FF7 and 8 were made with like... DX 5 or 6? And now it doesn't even run on DX9 without loads of tricks, hacks and fixes.

don't use FF7 install's provided config file(well do, but set it to custom driver and leave it alone)

Make sure you have aali's and have put it in your game folder, then find ff7_opengl.cfg or ff8_opengl.cfg (both in your game folder, choose the cfg for the game your playing)

Inside of the cfg file will be options you will have to manually edit, but it is not hard in the least.

Hi, I recently installed applied this patch since FF7 no longer seems to work correctly (It worked fine several months ago). Upon starting the game, the screen simply remains black as the Eidos theme plays. Subsequent to that, there is no way of starting or exiting the game thus forcing a system restart.

In any case, with the new patch, the problem is that although it is now possible to actually view the movies, the audio of the clip stops playing after 1-2 seconds within starting. Case in point: Eidos logo animation at the beginning sounds for a second or so before all audio is cut off. The beginning animation also suffers from the same problem so it can be speculated that all movies will play erroneously.

I installed XviD and uninstalled it as it did not seem to fix any of the problems. I currently have the latest CCCP beta and Real Alternative installed.

I've got a suggestion/want to ask you something

have you thought about/planing to make your own config exe or edit the ff7config exe. So people don't have to open the cfg file and edit it on notepad?

It would cut down on people that edit it wrongly and make it easier to set up

Hi everyone

This version is the first in this series I've tried and I'm certainly new to the modding community, so there's every chance I'm simply overlooking something really basic here, but I can't get this to work.

I've installed FF7 and installed the driver; upon running, the game displays both the Squaresoft intro screen and the opening credits scene (the latter without sound) then displays the menu, also without sound.  When I select New Game the game crashes and no app.log or crash.dmp file is created.

Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong? Obviously if there's any information you think I'm failing to provide, please let me know.

Thanks!

Have you read this (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=9590.0) guide?

You also need to install the 1.02 patch to get the game working and have a ff7input.cfg file and save files (the saves can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of the OP of the thread I lined to. If you download the saves, load one without using the driver and then make a new save, the ff7input.cfg file will be created.

If you have set everything up properly, it might be wise to simply reinstall (making sure you delete all the game's files when you uninstall it).

Hmm...I've done everything you said (I'd missed out the step with the saved games before), tried reinstalling, and the problem is the same, with the exceptions that 1) the error message 'couldn't open movie file' appears in the bottom-right (that is, one of the in-built error messages in red type), and 2) upon trying to start/load a game I get the inbuilt error message instead of the windows one, but again the crash dump and APP files which the message says it has created do not appear.

This thread is about 0.7.8b, your symptoms suggest that you are running 0.7.7b.
Also, app.log should always be created, even if it doesn't crash, be sure to double and triple check the working directory of ff7.exe.

If you have the movies on your harddrive you can just rename the file and it will be skipped as the game can't find it. For the intro screen this leaves a black layer over the field background but you can get rid of it by opening the menu and closing it again.

You can also use dziugo's patches that skips the fmv's but Aali's way of doing it is much better if you really intend to skip it.

I have a feature request: Option to turn off the battle shadows (the big ugly circles).
Of course, if you can do anything to make them look better, that would be very welcome too, but I figure that an option to turn them off would be easier to implement.

Also I saw this requested before, but I'm not sure if it was answered: Is it possible to have APNG support in FF7?

We need APNG support so we can make animated battle-scenes. If people will start asking for APNGS more, maybe we will get them.

Current Applications I can use APNGs for(Off the top of my head)

Animate the sign OPAD so that it does the same as the field sign and goes from Japanese, To WARNING, to INTRUDER.
Animate clouds to appear like there is wind
Animate oceans to appear as if there are waves.
Possibly be able to make it look like windy in some scenes
Animated Materia
Being able to make The materia and Treasure boxes flash like in the PSX version.

I asked Aali about this in the IRC and he said it may be a possiblity in the future so long as it's not a huge ordeal to implement it. I agree it would be a cool addition though.

Thats nice to hear, hopefully he will be able to implement it, since Aali uses LibPNG (i think) there are patches to add support for APNG to LibPNG at http://littlesvr.ca/apng/
but i have no idea if these are compataible with Aali's driver (and even if it is i bet it isnt as simple as just patching his LibPNG version)

I took all of the WMRP PNGs and stuck them into the mods directory, but some are showing up all black. I'm not seeing any errors in the app.log other than some convert to 32-bit. Any thoughts as to what's going on?

Also, the mods directory only loads images that are inside of a folder named "yes". For example, the world textures come from /mods/yes/world. Just seemed kind of odd that "yes" is one of the directories.

Maybe next time don't set your modpath to "yes" :P Those black spots are quite interesting though, dunno why that happened. Are your .tex files still modified or did you revert to original data? It shouldn't make a difference though, modpath takes preference.

lol, i didn't realize the mod_path option let you actually set the mod_path. I thought it was a yes/no option like the others.

Not sure what the black boxes were about. I closed the game down and recopied everything and it seems to be working now. All my LGPs are totally stock, and i plan on keeping them that way for the time being.

This thread is about 0.7.8b, your symptoms suggest that you are running 0.7.7b.
Also, app.log should always be created, even if it doesn't crash, be sure to double and triple check the working directory of ff7.exe.

Sorry for being an ignoramus, there is of course an app.log file, but I'm definitely running 0.7.8b and still experiencing the same problem.

How did you manage to do that? Somehow you've got FF7 running in low res mode; 320x240. This should not be possible unless you modified the registry manually. The driver was just not meant to work in this mode so thats the first thing you need to fix, rerun FF7Config and it should fix itself.

Nono, there seems to be a problem with the bundled FF7Config so this is certainly where this discussion belongs. What happens if you choose the D3D driver, up the resolution to 640x480, quit FF7Config, start it again and select the custom driver?

whats the story with mod_path and battle fields? With show_missing_textures on, all it reports is a generic battle png, like STAGE02_00.PNG. I know which textures to replace, but putting them into the mods/TA/battle doesn't let them load, and i have to place them into the LGP manually. Will this be fixed at some point? The world map textures load just fine when placed into the mods directory.

sounds good! Its easy enough to work around at this point, im just exicited at the prospect of using mods that dont require modification of the original LGPs. This should squash nearly all of the installation related issues that people have.

It sounds wierd ,but I tried the impossible:

Running in NT 4 with aalis driver on my old K6-2 notebook equipped with a ATI Rage LT pro AGP
a lot of upgrades and a DX5.0 beta kit.
in 3d part it runs but on field backgounds upper layers are drawn incorrect.

Also speed is an issue especially in videos, because my cpu has no L2 cache and floating point is much slower than a PII.

The reason its not loading in 0.7.8 is mostly likely because its looking for a different filename (0.7.8 is looking for md1stin_00_00.png but the file is named md1stin_0_00.png in your mod folder).

To get it to work properly put the field file that it generates into the flevel.lgp and delete your cache. The modpath does not work properly at the moment. Also make sure you are using palmer 0.4b

Hello,

i am a german Final Fantasy Player. Your awesome work give me a new experience for FF7 !

Later i want to play FF8 and install it for later using. I set up the Config file like the FF7 one and hit the FF8 exe.

Ok... xD My First fault was, that i have install the English patch...

On the second try your driver tells me that i have an unsupported Language^^

Jeah! "Wer lesen kann ist klar im Vorteil!"

My Question is: Is it possible to add support for the german Version?

Regards,

ryg

Basically, I've gone to this page:

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8306.msg142017

I have downloaded "ff7_opengl-0.7.8b.zip" (The last post on page 2)

This is the first time I have ever downloaded Aali's Custom Drivers by the way. So I opened the RAR file, and extracted everything in the file to "C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII".

I ran the modified FF7Config, chose Custom Driver and I got a message saying that it was working.

The next step says that I have to "Change your settings in ff7_opengl.cfg", I have no idea what this means so I left it. I ran the game and nothing had changed. I heard that this driver was supposed to run the game in a much higher resolution, upon opening the game, and printscreening it, the resolution was the same. I then tried to test the ff7_opengl.cfg by choosing on for things like "make all dialog boxes transparent", I then tested and nothing had changed once again.

I'm not sure what I'm doing, or what setting I'm supposed to change. Help would be very appreciated.

Nothing will really change if you did not touch the .cfg file. You'll just have to change it from yes/no or on/off. Example:
compress_texture=yes
You should be careful and leave no spaces and just encode no.
compress_texture=no
As for the resolution here's an example
window_size_x = 1360
window_size_y = 768
preserve_aspect = yes
fullscreen = yes

Just tried all of those, and nothing is changing  :'(

By the way:

Manufacturer: FUJITSU

Rating: 1.0 Windoes Experience Index: Unrated

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 : 2.00GHz 2.00 Ghz

Memory (RAM): 2.00

System type: 32-bit Operating System

----------------------------------------FIXED---------------------------------------

Okay! I fixed it! I didn't realise I had to replace the ff7.exe with the 1.02 patch! I installed it and it worked.
Okay I think the maximum resolution I can have is 1280 x 800 so I chose that and I got this:

Which is much nicer :D

Now is that the highest resolution I can get with my settings? Is there any way to make it fit anymore?

Also, what would you recommend I change in the opengl?

I think you are thinking too much Direct X style 8-)
The shader 3.0 you mentioned is DirectX 9.0c shader.
The shader used here is OpenGL 2.0 shader so your card and driver
 need to support openGL 2.0.

Im looking for how to load custom textures using ff7_opengl with /modpath, but i cannot find an example, nor exactly how the syntaxis is. Anyone could help me please?

Edit: To fix the problem with spanish FFVII when using new textures, is prior to avalanche mod, rename spanish files like menu_sp.lgp to english one, after that, rename again into spanish. It works. So not ff7_opengl issue, so please mods, move to proper location, might help someone else.

But the question is still there, how to use modpath option?

1. set modpath to modpath = 'insert folder name here'

2. inside modpath make a folder called menu

3. put all your png's in this folder.

4. Profit

I'm not sure where to post this since the topic isn't specific (The topic said to post it, but it didn't say where, and the first post said not to reply in the topic).

I've been using Aali's custom driver for FF8 and its been working amazingly good, that is until I got on the train to go to Timber and it had the flashback sequence. Randomly at the end of a battle, when it switches to show the exp and items gained it randomly crashes. The first time I did it, it crashed on the second fight. The second time it did it on the first, and it seems to be random.

Heres the app.log and crash.dmp files, along with the save on the train right before the sequence. (http://www.file-pasta.com/file/0/error.zip)

Hi everyone, i'm new in the forum, and i would need a little hand with this issue :(
I've been trying to play ff8, i had lots of crashes so i reinstalled and everything worked ok, till the 2nd disc, when squall is escaping from the galbadia desert prison, right after beating the boss, you run to the bridge, and a cg starts where the bridge splits apart, and you press right to keep squall safe, well, after that cg the screens goes black and the game crashes "ff8.exe has stopped working etc", i started using Aali's driver, i't worked greatly, but the game keeps crashing, at least i get the crash.dmp and the app.log.

Also seems that some file is missing or something because this relative locations to the insallation folder doesn't exists:

Can't open file: \ff8\data\eng\field\mapdata\gp\gpexit2\gpexit2.sfx

I assumed that both were SoundFX files, so i tried other audio settings but it keeps crashing.

I also noticed about:
Code: [Select]

BinkClose
BinkClose
ERROR: unhandled exception
I suppose that BinkClose function comes from the binkw32.dll, wich as far as i read closes the bink file opened by BinkOpen, and releases the allocated resources, with my limited knowledge about this, I understand that my game crashes because some audio files are missing somewhere. If someone can locate where these files are supposed to be it would be useful.

Any suggestion will be really appreciated  :)
Thx for your attention

Thx for your time.

Ps: Sry for my bad english, i hope you can understand me :-\

Yeah I made two topics by mistake, I looked down and saw a topic concerning Aali's driver and it was moved to feedback so I made a topic there and tried to delete this one only to see I couldn't... so...

I have Aali's OpenGL driver and it works good and everything but it just won't show the textures in the textures folder. I installed Avalanche's High Res package and thought I just wasn't noticing the difference until I put in the blue limit break texture and some new avatars and neither have changed.

Here's my config file if it'll help.
Could it have anything to do with where the game folder is located? It's not in the default install location.

Got a crash in the middle of a battle in FF7. Here's the dump:

http://rapidshare.com/files/409061523/crash.zip (http://rapidshare.com/files/409061523/crash.zip) (it can only be downloaded 10 times. Only Aali should download it)

For mods, I'm only using the hires Cloud (the one from Sephiroth's fight) and the Chibi Reconstruction 1.5. Fancy transparency and post processing were turned on, but I guess I don't need those.

And here's APP.log, it doesn't say much though (If it helps, it crashed right when Cloud was charging the Braver Limit Break)...

Well, Tech Support is for getting your game running.  Which it is.  If it's a problem with the program you should probably post in that program's thread.  I know it's a crazy thought, hell, you may even find your answer in that thread... that would be even CRAZIER! Warned, merged, etc

The site where the links connect to seem to be down, just in case no one knew, and i literally JUST deleted my old 7.3 driver installer!

My "feedback/question" is:

Is it a bug that 7.3 is required to use TA's overhaul? and if so, is it being repaired in a newer release? (that is if there will be any newer releases)

Last thing, I still have 1 of my 2 FF7 installs on my computer with The custom driver. Is there any way that someone could supply a list of File and folder names that are needed for Aali's Custom driver (thever. is the last one that used the REG. File, I apologize for not knowing exact one i'm pretty sure it's either 7.3 or 7.5) , that can be found directly in the "Final Fantasy VII" folder, no need for sub-folders or any complicated lists. Just a general one so i can grab the correct files and transfer them over to a fresh install.

Please and thank you.

*Bows graciously*

0.7.3 is not required to use TA. Go read our FAQ for a fix. There is no problem with his driver in that aspect. And it will be fixed in the next avalanche installer.

I bought a copy of FF8 for the PC, and I've enjoyed being able to set my resolution (been meaning to try another Final Fantasy besides VII as well).
I had a random crash when I was fighting Fake President Whatshisname. It happened in the middle of the battle, which was wierd, and it worked the second time, so I don't have an APP.LOG to post (sorry), but I'll get the crash.dmp up in a minute.
Here it is: http://rapidshare.com/files/409716957/crash.zip

I think you get those errors randomly. I got it before in FF8 at random times but the second time I play it I play through it smoothly without problems. The only problem I have with this error is sometimes I don't save for a long time and when I get this error I'd have to start with the last place I save.

Hi, I'm a n00b and I need some guidance.

I'm running Win7 x64, FF7 v1.02.  I'm trying to install Aali's driver, and I've followed all the steps (as far as I know):
1) fill up all the save slots (save01...save09)
2) extract driver to FF7 directory
3) run FF7config and choose custom driver (self-test was successful)
4) modify ff7_opengl.cfg ("fullscreen = yes" to "fullscreen = no")

But when I run the game, nothing changes at all, it still runs fullscreen, graphics is the same, as if I didn't install the mod.  My app.log is completely empty.  What did I do wrong?

Sorry if the question has already been answered, I searched for a good half hour on this forum and the interweb without luck...

Is possible apply the bilinear filter on 2D filed graphic? ATM I have notice that filter work only, but very well, on initial 2D graphic (like buster img) and texture. IMO an implementation on background image can really improve the graphic.

Hey guys. New guy here.
Couple days ago i found Aali's driver v 0.7.7b things were doing ok then i got the wind.wav errors. Then i found the new driver v 0.7.8b, now whenever i run the game I immediately get the "oops something bad happened" message. Anyone else get this and know how to fix it?

If you require the app.log and .dmp files please give me instructions on where or how I may share it. Like what fileshare site I should use.

Thanks.

Hi guys.. I'm new and I think I need some help here ^^a

when I start the game for the first time, there's no sound when the cursor moves between new game and load game, and when the first scene (aerith in midgar, FF7 logo, and the moving train).
when I look ff7_opengl.cfg, I noticed there's a # before music plugins.
Code: [Select]
# plugins
# a movie plugin is required, the music plugin is optional, but required to make FF7Music work
movie_plugin = plugins/ffmpeg_movies.fgp
#music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp

I'm not sure if it's the problem, but when I removed the #, the sounds that were missing before returned. but in exchange, the music in credits (producer, dll.) was gone.

also, there's a message ERROR: couldn't find movie files when I'm at new/load game screen.
in APP.log..

The music plugin should only be used if you're using FF7Music. I recommend it anyway, because it can sound much better than the crappy midi versions of the music included with the PC version of FF7, as well as fix a number of volume errors throughout the game.

First off I'd like to thank Alli for this immensely useful graphics driver for FF7.

I'm using the current version of the driver (0.7.8b) with all of the graphical assets from the current version of the Remix project (2.5.1). I've gotten about 10 hours into the game and I've received a few missing asset errors. Here are screen shots and the relevant lines from the APP.LOG file.

This one I get whenever I enter the world map.

I'm assuming these errors are the result of the incomplete model and texture patches that make up the FF7 Remix pack. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to prevent these errors or if there's some line I can enter in the ff7_opengl.cfg to prevent these errors from appearing onscreen.

These issues are with the remix patch and they will probably be gone whenever there's a new release of the pack. IIRC there are also 3rd party fixes floating around for these things.

When I play FF7 with custom graphics driver 7.8b, during worldmap, battle mode or field mode, there are always some messages as "ERROR, GLITCH..." they don't want to hide.

Add the command "disable_popup = yes" on your ff7_opengl.cfg. However, hiding the messages isn't going to solve your problems. You shouldn't be getting any messages at all, there's obviously something wrong with your instalation.

I have been having some issues with Aali's custom driver and FF7 remix.  :(
I'm new to the forum and Ive been trying to find info about this issue on the internet but have been unsuccessful.
First I installed FF7 and the 1.02 patch, then remix (not realising that it already contained said patch) and it worked perfectly for a few days (and was awesome!). Then I decided to try playing around with some of the settings in the opengl config file. Being a newbie and not really knowing what i was doing I followed a tutorial i found on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flnmZEtVqls) after applying the changes I began to get an error message during battle: "GLITCH: Something tried to use hardware accelerated lighting, expect funky-looking models" (I've gathered that this may have something to do with Aeris having just joined my party but at the time I assumed it was because of the changes I had made. Now I'm not sure. :-\)
Changing the settings back in the config file did not solve the problem so i completely uninstalled the game and deleted all the mod files, then reinstalled everything over again and started the game and... black screen... "ff7.exe has stopped working"
I've repeated this process many times over the past few days and all I know is that the game will run fine with the 1.02 patch only, but if I try to use remix or Aali's driver it won't even start up.
I apologize if this is a question that has been answered already but all of my searches have been fruitless, so if it has been answered, at the very least can someone point me in the right direction?
thanks in advance.

check to see if your card support openGL 2.0 or higher. if not turn off shaders on the first line of the config.
Title: Re: Aali's driver [v 0.7.8b] Help/Bugs/Suggestions
Post by: Aali on 2010-08-15 16:11:44
The use_shaders option has no meaning if your renderer doesn't support OpenGL 2.0, its only useful to disable shaders when OpenGL 2.0 support IS available.

Post by: aestetik on 2010-08-15 17:51:43
My card is nVidia GeForce 8600M GT. Should have support for OpenGL 2.0
I turned off shaders, but it had no effect...
And that doesn't explain why it worked perfectly for several days then suddenly just crapped out on me. Clearly it should work (because it did work). But now it wont even run the game at all, even after fully uninstalling and reinstalling everything. That's what's frustrating.
As I mentioned before, it does work with the 1.02 patch but stops working when the OpenGL driver is installed. But just a week ago there was no issue...  The version of the driver included on FF7 remix worked just fine. Now it doesn't...   :-\

No... I don't see either in the ff7 directory. I assume they should have been included when I installed the game? I haven't removed anything from the directory.

For Aali's custom driver to work, you need to have ff7input.cfg in your ff7 directory, and you need to run the ff7opengl registry file.

ff7input: http://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1LRdeu1DP17NmVmNjdhMzAtYmQzNi00MzBkLTk0YzQtMjFiMTUwMDQxNzhi&hl=en

Not with 0.7.8b you dont. The .reg file was made obsolete by the modified FF7Config.exe and ff7input.cfg was only required for 0.7.7b because of a bug in that specific version.
Title: Re: Aali's driver [v 0.7.8b] Help/Bugs/Suggestions
Post by: aestetik on 2010-08-16 02:14:05
So I do not need those files? I'll give it a try anyway, because I've just about run out of ideas...
Does anyone have any thoughts on why it would have stopped working, given that I did nothing different on my first install (which did work) from what I've done on any of my subsequent installs (which have not)?

Update: I put ff7input.cfg into the ff7 directory and now I get as far as the opening FMVs (Eidos and Squaresoft logos) but it crashes before it gets to the new game/continue screen. I guess that's sort of an improvement.... :-/
The .reg file I downloaded from the above link appears to be an mp3 file so... idunno.
Thanks again for the suggestions thus far. Hopefully I can get this resolved eventually.

Update 2: I feel STUPID. As it turns out I wasnt using the latest version of the OpenGL driver. I downloaded and installed it and it basically fixed the issue for the most part. The game seems to run now, not perfectly, but the major issue has been fixed.

I am still rather curious what the issue actually was though... I mean when it originally worked I was using the driver included with FF7 remix (not the latest version) so why did that fix it now?
Anyway, thanks for the responses and the help. Much appreciated.

So, at first you were using 0.7.3b, then you installed 0.7.7b which crashes whenever it cant find a file and now you have the latest version which does not have this problem. What a mess.

Hello everyone.  Nice to know people are working on such cool FF7 projects.  I'm not a total noob with game mods, and I've followed all the instructions from a clean install off my original FF7 disc, but I can't seem to get higher resolutions to work on my computer.

I'm using a GeForce 5200 with a 3Ghz P4.  Is that enough to deliver higher res? Or does it not support OpenGL 2?  The App log says OpenGL 2.0 support is detected, but in the config tool, it says the OpenGL render option is "busted".  Not sure if that's a problem or supposed to display that.

Using the "Custom Driver" option, everything runs quickly smoothly in 640x480, in both windowed and full screen mode, no glitches.  But when I go up to 800x600 (or higher) the game boots the EIDOS load screen VERY VERY slowly, like maybe a frame every few seconds.  The music skips, and finally after two minutes or so, I get to the NewGame/Continue screen, and a button press will take me to the save game screen after maybe another minute or two.  Is just the load screen this slow, and a beautiful game awaits me?  I've not had the patience to get to the game screen, but I'm fairly certain it will be just as slow.  Essentially everything "runs" but at unplayable slow speed.

What sort of questions do I need to be asking in order to get it working?

Change to a resolution that is an even multiple of 640x480 like 1280x960 (1280x1024 works too thanks to aspect correction). Anything else will require scaling which is a bit too heavy for your graphics card.

You must install Aali's driver and TA patch and then put the image like buster_00.png inside the textures folder. Make sure you don't touch anything from the menu_us.lgp too.

I have the Aali Driver installed but is it possible to still do this without the TA patch by just throwing in the buster_00.png into FF7/texture/WMRP/menu?

I've been trying it with a fresh install and I still get the regular menu. =\

nope, the original game does not look inside of the /textures/ folder at all, in fact it does not even know it exists. Aali had to develop this method so we could properly modify the game, which involves manually editing the TEX files so they point to that directory. If you can get your hands on the TA TEX file for the opening menu, then this could work though.

fyi, this support may possibly be built into the next version of the driver though, which could alleviate may problems such as this.

hmmm, I'm still having a lot of issues trying to get the modpath to work correctly. Placing textures in there seems to have no effect(cache off). Do they need to be in a certain folder structure? I got the WMRP files working, but i cant get the menus from the TA patch working independently.

my computer actually would not start ff7 without ff7input.cfg. Make a new TXT document and simply title it "ff7input.cfg" and place it in the FF7 directory. Should at least sort out that issue.

Hi Aali

I really need your help. I've followed the instructions to setup the custom driver but I'm having problems with FMVs. Basically they play really slow with artefacting along the bottom and right about 5 pixels wide. For some reason the videos won't play without the TrueMotion 2.0 codec installed either. Doesn't the custom driver use the ffmpeg plugin anyway? Nothing seems to be appearing in my APP.log file either. Any ideas?

Thanks

OK found a small bug, i am using your driver 0.7.8 and just manipulated a enemy with my character who holds a Master Command Materia and this happened
(http://a.imageshack.us/img138/753/transparentbox.jpg)
it seems to keep the length of the original characters box when the new box comes up which is smaller causing the problem shown above.

Hello there! Installed the 0.7.8 today and it is working great, there is just one thing which I cant get to work: Ficedula/FF7Music. I dont get any music in the game, but the normal sounds work just fine. ff7music.fgp file is in the plugins folder, also tried to remove it but that didnt change anything. Im playing on Windows 7 64-bit and without Aali's driver the game isnt playable at all (fmv's doesnt work, backgrouds doesnt work correctly etc...), but when playing without aali's driver FF7Music works.

EDIT: Oh I didnt notice that # thing in front of the "music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp", and after I removed it, FF7Music works now! Sorry about this post. :3

I have a few issues to report.

During the opening movie.

ERROR: GL_INVALID_OPERATION

I also keep getting some texture error "Earith.tos" or something, i can't read the red text, try yellow, it stands out better. (This didn't show up in the log for whatever reason, but it happens frequently during battles.. Shinra HQ, after the prison scene\Jenova blood trail thing..)

The battle swirl frame limiter isn't working, and the bike mini-game wasn't frame limited either.

The first time I left Midgar, it was really dark, I don't remember if it's supposed to be night time, but that's how it looks, and I was getting a texture error..

ERROR: libpng error: Read Error
ERROR: COULD NOT LOAD TEXTURE DATA FILE clf_lg.TEX
ERROR: COULD NOT LOAD TEXTURE DATA FILE clf_lg.tim

Also, you should change the window title regardless of the window state(windowed\fullscreen), the .dll that I'm working on uses the window title to get the handle, it stopped working in fullscreen, I'm guessing because it was named "DEFAULT" instead of "Final Fantasy VII".

If this isn't enough info, let me know.

Does the opening movie work?

Errors always show up in app.log and all those texture errors you have are because of the remix pack. The frame limiter doesn't work if vsync isn't enabled and working. Its supposed to be a bit dark when you exit midgar but perhaps you should make a screenshot. The window title is changed in fullscreen mode already, it just didn't make it into 0.7.8b. Either way, relying on that to find the window seems terribly hackish when you can use GetWindowThreadProcessId to find the correct one.

Does the opening movie work?

Yeah it plays, the error seems to occur when I skip the movie(are there multiple movies?), by pressing a button.

The frame limiter doesn't work if vsync isn't enabled and working.

I have it set to "On, unless application specifies otherwise", and set to "yes" inside your .cfg file. Not sure why it wouldn't be working.

Radeon HD4850 + Catalyst 10.4

Edit: Setting it to always on, works, not sure why it wasn't picking up my device settings.

Its supposed to be a bit dark when you exit midgar but perhaps you should make a screenshot.

Here ya go, see what you think.

http://yfrog.com/mvworldmapp

Edit: After I moved away from Midgar, it brightened up a bit, it's not quite as bright as I remember it being, but it's not too dark either.

-------

A suggestion\request. (I didn't read the entire thread, so if this has already been mentioned, then disregard this.)

Implement battle menu transparency.

I would like just the elements to show, none of the background, but even making it like the text windows(semi transparent) would be an improvement.

---

Edit: Any reason in particular you are messing with the wave volume slider? It's kind of an issue, I have ppl trying to sleep here. (It refuses to turn down, your patch keeps setting it to max.)

When I turn down the playback slider to the min I can't really hear it, one notch up, and it's loud.

I usually run the playback slider at notch 2, and the wave slider at about 25-50%.. (That's during the day when loud doesn't matter, so as you can imagine, it's blaring at 100%.. At 3am, not cool.)

Some bugs with FF8:

The game seems to be running faster than usual on my PC.
I checked with Fraps and it says 31fps.

Also in battle, there appears to be feint blue boxes around the 'dust' that is kicked up when characters run.

Cheers

Also would just like to add, is there any way to make the world map textures of FF8 look like the PSX?
Would be great, as I think this is really the only thing stopping the PC version from being the superior version at this point.

Meh, upgrade to 64bit windows ya lazy bum! Kidding, but have you tried running in compatibility mode? If not, try it, if that doesn't work then you can always add it to the registry manually. To do that you simply need to put the following in a .txt file and save it as a .reg file...

Code: [Select]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Graphics]
"DriverPath"="ff7_opengl.fgd"
"Driver"=dword:00000003
"Mode"=dword:00000002

You may also want to check the pseudo-crash log that it gives when it crashes and any actual crash if it saved one (which it should if it gives the popup)

is there anyway to insert a "Disable Screensaver" sort of function within the driver? On both of my computers the screensaver takes over after 15 minutes(blank screen) and it's annoying as hell.  I know its not that hard to turn off the screensaver, but IIRC a few others were having a similar problem. If it's as simple as adding a bit of code it would be much appreciated, otherwise i'll continue to manually turn it off...when i remember.

Would it be possible for the driver to tell us what level we are on? For example when you are on the Highwind deck it pops up with "Fship1" when the level first loads.

It would be really helpful for me and others when they are trying to edit the levels, but don't know which file that scene is in. There are multiple ones for some areas, and they all have the same text in, so its hard to tell which one is which.

Your prayers have been heard. There is also the problem of computers going into various sleep states while the game is running, is this something that should be prevented as well? How do directx fullscreen apps affect this?

ultima espio:
You can already do this quite easily, show_missing_textures also tells you about field textures. Of course its not a flashy ingame message but it should do.

If you have an LCD monitor (which everyone SHOULD have nowadays), screensavers are completely useless. I say turn them off.

thanks for taking a look at this Aali, and it will go into hibernate as well. DX games seem to function perfectly, and the screensaver never appears.

As far as using a screen saver, i have some cool ones that i like. I don't care if they are "useless" on an LCD, the use for me is having a cool image moving around when i walk by.

When you copy and pasted the files from Aalia's 7.8 into the FF7 folder.. you replaced the ff7_opengl.cfg with the new 7.8 ff7_opengl.cfg.. so go edit that new file find - #music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp and remove this  # from it. Then try FF7Music.

Let me know how that goes.

Hi,i have a little problem since i upgraded the ali drivers to version 0.7.8b.
First i had the remix mod with a fresh install of final fantasy vii installed and all worked fine (texture loading, 1024x768 full screen,etc...), then i tried another fresh install without the remix patch and with alis 0.7.6b drivers and all worked fine too except for some crashes at some points of the game.
This was the reason why i actually changed my drivers to the 0.7.8b but with this driver im not able to start the game.
On all versions (including the remix patcher that has alis drivers 0.7.3b) i get a start error (No useful indirect path found, search app.log for more infomation) but clicking on accept on this popup the game starts fine but on the 0.7.8b drivers after accepting the popup a new popup comes up (ooops something very bad happening.....) and the game doesnt start.I have tried the patch with a fresh install without mods and the with the remix patch but it doesnt go.
Im using the original cd version of FF7 and the disks are fine. Here is my app.log but i think its very hard to figure out what is happening.

Code: [Select]
INFO: FF7/FF8 OpenGL driver version 0.7.8b

INFO: No shaders, codecs with YUV output will be slow.
INFO: FF7Music helper plugin loaded
LOCK UNLOCK TEST
ERROR: unhandled exception

Another thing, i only get the ooops crash dump error if i set my resolution to not fullscreen, if i set it to fullscreen the game simple has a black screen during 1-2 seconds and exits to desktop without giving me any error. The last string on app.log if i set it to fullscreen disappear (the unhandled exception string, the app.log ends in Lock Unlock Test)

Have tried setting resolutions like 640x480 full and not fullscreen, 800x600 full and not, 1280x800 full and not 1280x900 full and not and finally 1280x1024 full and not but my original resolution and notebooks max resolution is 1024x768 and thats the same resolution i was playing the game with older alis drivers so i think that the resolution is not the problem here.

I hope you have some ideas to help me out with this problem and sorry for my bad english, im learning it right now hehe and posting on forums and chats help very much.

Thanks and keep up making this great patch!!!

EDIT: Im using windows xp sp3 32 bit version.

On the crash.dmp i found many strings like C:\lib\src\graphics\gl\gl_code.cpp , c:/ff7/scr/.... that i do not have on my pc. Is that normal?
I have compressed the dump file to rar and uploaded it to mediafire and megaupload (compressed file size about 780 k and uncompressed about 20 MB)

or

Thank you for your fast reply Ali !!!

EDIT: Remember that i get a crash.dmp file only if i set the resolution to window mode, on fullscreen i dont get errors but the game doesnt start up

EDIT 2: The only difference i see with remix patch and others is that this patch includes a eax.dll, can this bee the problem? I have copied all but i think that this dll is for ff8.

Hello,

First time on the forums here. Glad I found this community. I'm having a small issue with the Aali patch.

I have followed the instructions. A) Fresh Install B) Installed 1.02 Retail Patch C) Extracted Aali's patch into the default folder location D) Ran Config and made sure it was set to "Custom" E) Modified the config file to change the screen resolution.

It appears to not be changing the screen resolution and I was hoping someone could offer some pointers.

Thank you!

The new subtractive blending feature is at fault here. The driver assumes you have support for it if you have OpenGL 1.2 but apparently thats not enough. Unfortunately there's no config option you can turn off to work around this. See if there are any updates for your graphics card drivers, they might have added support for it.

Ohhh thats bad, there are no new drivers for the graphic card (searched on dell, ati and looked over google). I will use then the older opengl drivers,it crashes but the game is playable (+ i have a save anywhere patch so that is no prob).

But in Aali's info thread,it tells me to change settings with theff7.cfd file, and I don't know how to do that. I read through different threads and couldn't find an answer. So I booted up the game to try to play it, but the Eidos and Squaresoft Logos never came up, but when i clicked the "action" button on my game[ad it went to the new/ load screen. I clicked new game and it went black, and wouldn't load the intro movie. Any help/ info on what I did wrong? Thanks.

Nice Driver here. ;) but i have found some bugs in this. more likely the screen transitions. while the
fps display constantly at 32 when the transition is not made. it began to really drop to 19 or something
when i go to next screen.. although this can be solved by entering the menu and exiting out again.
is there a fix for this already or i have to change some configuration..

thanks.. btw. good job with this got it working with Launcher 1.4 and some good add-ons. this is the only bug that i found.

updated. i found that the texture reload resets to 0 when i enter the menu and exit. but when
im entering a new screen it goes up again to some value. and il have to re-enter the menu again to reset it to 0 just to increase fps again/.

Question about this mod path.  Why does it need a path?  Why can't it just be forced to be "/"
so that the folder is the root.

That seems to be far more logical, no?

Hey everyone. No idea if this is a bug, but I got this driver and I also installed the Team Avalanche's patch and PRP patch as well. All is great when in the config. file I set my resolution to 640x480 but the moment I set even 1 pixel less or one pixel more, it lags to incredibly new lengths. The only tihng I have seen lag this much on my computer was a PS2 game played through PCSX2. I cannot figure out what the problem might be. Sure my computer is not great, but it can take this.

You will have to either turn off prevent_rounding_errors which causes some glitches or run in a multiple of 640x480. 1280x960 or 1280x1024 (which is reduced to 1280x960 by aspect correction) will work fine, for example.

Is there anyway to put yer own music into the game? I know about FF7Music mod, but I'm talking about custom music.

Yes, replace the file in FF7 music with the mp3/ogg of your choice. if you have further questions on how to do that. please post it in a topic in Tech-support. Or the feedback for FF7music Thank you.

Well, after some playing around, I finally figured out why I couldn't get FF VII running in WINE on OS X.  Any version of Aali's driver past 0.7.6b won't work (at least not on my hardware).  Any of them with the modified FF7Config says "Could Not Initialize OpenGL, Driver Probably Will Not Work", but it will if you use any version before 0.7.7b

Now my only problem (unrelated) is getting FF7Music to not crash when it changes songs

Otherwise, OS X is now my perfect OS

Is there anyway to watch the movies without having NPOT support? and, not using fullscreen.

Hi, this is my second try at patching something on the PC, so I'm not sure exactly what I'm doing wrong. I got FF7 to work just fine but FF8 Configurator (I'm using Samuel's) is giving me a error message, saying 'Failed to load custom driver,' so I can't even open it now. The original FF8 Config can be opened but only has a primary display driver.

Can someone help me out please? Thanks!

You have to put "ff7_opengl.fgd" in the same folder where FF8 is installed, that should solve your problem.

You have to put "ff7_opengl.fgd" in the same folder where FF8 is installed, that should solve your problem.

Just tried as you suggested. Doing that gave me this message:

"Exception EAccessViolation in module FF8Configurator.exe at 00001F68.
Access violation at address 00401F68 in module 'FF8Configurator.exe'.
Read of address 00001058."

I think it has something to do with the eax.dll file. If I delete it I can get into the configurator but there's still no custom drive option.

Try installing EAXUnified and you don't have to put Custom Drive like in FF7 in FF8Configurator, just configure it in ff8opengl.cfg file.

Well, 0.7.8b Suddenly decided to start playing nice with WINE.  Now if only I could replicate this process so I could write a tut.

Now, I'm down to this issue with FF7Music.  You removed the WINE version of the helper, because it was no longer needed as of WINE 1.1.35, which is great, since it caused FF7Music to crash for me anyway.  However, when I use the helper you have now, it doesn't even TRY to play the soundfiles I'm using with FF7Music.

The fake eax.dll breaks FF8Configurator? Nice find, I never would have figured that out myself. It will be fixed in the next version.

You need that eax.dll in the same directory as FF8.exe for the driver to work though. Thats also the only thing you should need aside from having installed the real EAXUnified. There's no config option that needs to be enabled for the driver to work in FF8.

Real and fake?

I removed the FF8Configurator and all off its added components from the program folders for now, so I'm just using the original FF8Config. I do have EAXUnified installed and the eax.dll is in there but I'm still have trouble with crashes and occasionally lag. Rebooting usually fixes this but there's this one spot that I can't seem to get past no matter how many times I try.

Hey there. I am still getting the wind.wav error at the Dyne scene. It hasn't crashed my computer (yet), but it has slowed everything WAY down. At this rate, it will take me an hour to get through the conversation/fight if it lets me. It still shows the classic "ERROR: could not read from file C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\Data\music\wind.wav" garbage.

For giggles, I went into FF7Config and switched to the default graphics driver and was able to get past the Dyne part, but then it crashed at the Chocobo race...

I really don't want to have to uninstall/reinstall everything again.

any chance of incorporating the openGL driver settings into FF7config? As far as interface goes, the only thing i see missing is a n00b friendly way to adjust the driver setting.

Im also happy to report i haven't had any issues with crashing w/the latest version of the driver.

You could simply write your own static linked FF7config prog.It just sets a few registry keys
and is very picky if they got wiped out or if no waveout or MIDI device is found.
With a new ff7config a noob can move his ff7 directory around or start the game via a linux livecd and Wine.
Title: Aali's Drivers: FF7Config crash
Post by: kiteswitch on 2010-10-18 23:28:50
Hello. I'm new but I'll try to not be stupid.  :|

I was having a crash and I searched high and low to find Qhimm.com. I wasn't expecting something like this, let alone something that is still being used by other people ...  :o The crash I was having is unrelated to the crash I am having now, and I searched this forum and found that it could probably be fixed by installing aali's drivers. Well the thread said by updating them but I hadn't installed them yet so I tried to do that.

I downloaded the latest drivers, I think they are 0.7.8, and I ran FF7Config, went to the graphics tab to select Custom Drivers and I get a crash.

AppName: ff7config.exe
ModName: atioglxx.dll
ModVer: 6.14.10.10188
Offset: 00087ad7

"The instruction at 0x5ed2aed8 referenced memory at 0x00000564. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program"

I searched around to no avail. Needless to say I am at a loss and am not sure what to do.

I've searched around and seen some interesting responses, but I'll tell you straight off the bat that I have an ATI HD3850 and definitely support OpenGL. I just wanted to get that out of the way.

I read something about a crash.dmp and app.log but I don't see any crash.dmp file and APP.txt is 0kb of completely empty.

Any help?  :o

Dynamic, that certainly is an unusual problem. A few questions:

1. Is it a legit copy of the game? Weird-ass problems are frequently caused by using a pirated edition of the game; you never know how its been hacked.

2. can you post the contents of your ff7_opengl.cfg in code tags?

You've got a 9800GT, same is me. I know for sure FF7 works with this card, so if your drivers are up to date then that shouldn't be the problem at all.

Because that means something goes wrong when its trying to setup OpenGL and there's practically nothing in there that could cause a crash. My money is on broken graphics card drivers.

My money is on that too.  These hotfix drivers are a piece of junk.
I initially went back to ATI from Nvidia because I thought it would be better than having to go through Nvidia's bag-o-drivers. I paid a lot of money for this graphics card to give me these kinds of unexplainable problems. I'm starting to think that a little bit of driver-diversity wouldn't be so bad right about now. I'm on 10.9 and I would have to go back to 6.12 or more just to get an older opengl version. To be fair this isn't the first time my opengl has tossed a putrid fart at me but it's usually because an older version of opengl is being used that my drivers do not support. (i.e. neverwinter nights, kotor, etc)
I could ask ATI to look at it but I've tried that before. They are perfectly aware that their drivers do not offer the best support for opengl. The only thing truly certain is that next time I buy parts for my PC, I will buy from Intel and Nvidia. But I have to laugh (if it's even funny) whenever some Nvidia user complains and says that they are going to go to ATI. :o
Well I guess I am off to the ATI forums. ???
Seems trivial at best. Do they even read their forums? Somehow I doubt it. I know the manufacturers do. Maybe it would be a better idea to send an email to powercolor first. :|

Code: [Select]
window_size_x = 720

window_size_y = 480

preserve_aspect = no

fullscreen = no
Why would you do this? The game natively runs at 640x480. If you want it in windowed mode, try changing that 720 to 640.

I don't know what I was thinking. Anyway, I fixed my problem. After I selected the custom drive I turned on the nVidia checkbox selected the 128 option and all good.

But.. that option has absolutely no effect on the custom driver. Changing to a resolution which doesn't require scaling would still have been a good idea though, could be that the FBO was acting up.

Tuxedo:
Thats some messed up shit you got there. I'd say you have some corrupted data files or something.

I had the same problem with a much older version as well, but that was fixed when i updated a while back. Any idea what could be causing this?

Do you have compatibility mode turned on? That's almost always the culprit in this case.

Wow, that was it. I remembered it does that as soon as I read your post too lol. I have no idea why compatibility mode was on in the first place, I don't remember turning it on, and I never needed it anyway.

Whatever, it works, sorry for bothering you Aali.

Yeah, that's my fault. Compatibility mode is needed for FF7Music in Vista and 7, though I'll set it not to turn it on in XP in future releases, since it's been reported that it works just fine without. 7 (and probably Vista) also doesn't have the problem with FF7 not closing, so everything works out nicely!

Why would you do this? The game natively runs at 640x480. If you want it in windowed mode, try changing that 720 to 640.

A good window would be 800*600 (especially for avalanche graphics windowed). 800/640 = 1.25, 600/480 = 1.25.   but you are right, the original is 640*480 and you should always try to use equal multiples.  Certainly not 720*480.

Known problem, try to update your graphics drivers, if that doesn't work you'll have to wait for the next release or use an older version, like 0.7.3b.

This is a very small quirk, not really a problem, but the Credits at the beginning roll way too fast. Again, it's not much of a problem but occasionally i sit at that screen to listen to the prelude.  ::) Is it possible for you to include a framelimiter for that portion? It really doesn't affect the game in any way so doesn't matter if you don't.

Also i noticed that while the bloom looks plain bad in a lot of places, in some places it could look good. Do you have plans to add any way to adjust the intensity in future versions? I feel with a bit of tweaking it could be subtle enough to make the game look really good.

Credits (and everything else) abides by vsync, at 60hz its certainly not too fast. The driver does not and probably will not include any framelimiting that isn't based on vsync.

If you are refering to the postprocessing shader that comes bundled with the driver its just a proof of concept. Its not really meant to be used out of the box.

I went into this in a video.  The credits move 2X faster to compensate for the 2X greater distance to the PSX version (which runs at 320*240 and not 640*480).  However, the font itself is not as good as the PSX and it begins its scroll at the wrong time.

Odd, because i have v-sync enabled and it seems to limit everything everything but the menu credits. That's why i thought perhaps it was unconnected.

For me the credits are done within about 1/4 of the prelude song.

also it doesn't limit the menu which correctly runs at 60fps, just like the credit screen.

I've tried and tried to get the aali custom driver to work, but no luck. Did everything step by step...downloaded the 1.02 patch, the save files were in the folder, and using non-ultima version. When I go to config the driver I can see "Open GL (BROKEN)" in the drop down menu when selecting customer driver, even though I still get the "ok" popup saying it's ready to go. I even tried the old Saints High Res mod. The game actually started but never got pass the opening sequence. Any tips?? I really wanna try out all these graphic mods and such

I've found the problem. Don't pick "Open GL": pick "Custom Driver" instead. Your drop-down menu does have a custom driver option, doesn't it? Because if it doesn't, then you have an extremely odd problem.

I've tried a couple of older versions and updated the drivers, still no luck. My graphics controller is an Intel 828456 and I downloaded updated drivers from the Intel site. Just incase I may have did something wrong I'll list step by step of my procedure.

1. Play game and save all ten slots

2. Copy Config and .exe file from 1.02 patch to FF7 directory

3. Copy all files from Custom driver folder into ff7 directory

4. run cofig and choose custom driver

I've just noticed that when I use the 1.02 patch and try to play the game (before installin custom driver) the game won't load. Just a black screen. Cant even exit out, have to restart the computer.

Hello. Thanks for the great driver for the great game :) Yet I need some help.

I prefer my monitor to work in 85Hz mode, but the game always starts with 60Hz, despite it is setted 85 in dxdiag settings. So I have to switch to monitor settings and set 85Hz manually every time I start the game. It's inconvenient...

Also, is there an another way to get 30 fps in minigames than calculating it by halving the refresh rate value?

Hi Aali, I have a feature suggestion.
FF7 PSX had a feature that reset the game if you pressed L1, L2, R1, R2, Start, Select buttons at the same time.
As far as I know, FF7 PC does not have that (I could be wrong, but it has never worked for me).

Would you be able to implement it into your driver?
It's really nice to be able to load another save quickly, I have seen a lot of people want a 'load' option on the menu, but this is better since you can do it in battle.

I tried changing my resolution to 640x480, I tried turning off prevent_rounding_errors, I tried updating my video card...nothing worked.
I tried changing the renderer to OpenGL[BROKEN] and for some reason it worked out but it screwed up my resolution and the battles came with white blocks. Im using .7.8b. Should I try other versions?

# for example; if FF7 is looking for aaab.rsd in char.lgp, this option will make it open direct/char/aaab.rsd first,
# if this file doesn't exist it will look for the original in the LGP archive
# this option should be used for testing only, performance will take a hit

Okay :) The reason I was being so specific is because I can't fix that unless I can reproduce it and so far I've dismissed similar reports as driver bugs, now however I have received enough similar reports to reconsider it. This reminds me of another crash that goes waaay back, like in the 0.6 releases. Perhaps it is even a bug in FF7 itself.

FOUND IT THE THREAD!

Using .7.9b and Team Avalanche's latest release (including GUI 2.07).

Okay a few things:  I'm on a laptop and use ff7input but there seem to be some problems.  I've tried fixing them by going to the ingame config but that yielded no progress.  Anyway whenever I hold shift, up, and left Cloud only runs up rather than diagonal.  It's only this combination though every other one works.  Also many non keyboard buttons (volume up/down etc.) seem to hit cancel and field (pointer finger).  Also my right shift brings up the menu but it also hits cancel and field.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Also I need to turn ff7music's volume down to 35/255 to be able to hear the sound effects.  I was wondering if there is any way to change the sound effects volume?

Also caching seems to make some Team Avalanche imported textures (but not others) come through.  For instance, restore still uses the old one.  This isn't a modpath issue either.  Also it works fine with caching off.  On the topic of spells, I can see the square edge of the bolt 1's "plumes" texture.  I don't think it's the texture's fault since TA makes all textures 1 to 1 replica updates.

Also I ran through the motorbike game recently and an error came up about the vsync (I couldn't catch it though).  I checked the .cfg and it said the framelimiter needs the vsync turned on but there was no option for it anywhere in the file.

Looks at thread title.  Looks at stickies.  Crap.

Yeah I'm actually positive I deleted this post by you yesterday.  Why you ask?  Well because this isn't even the version you're using...and that's overly obvious.   And on top of that you already posted in the .7.9 version thread.   Thereby making you an asshole for posting about your problem in multiple threads.

Now I don't like you.  So you don't get to post for a while.

Also, this is now locked.. not sure why anyone would be using an older version at this point
