I like the way materia system works...
But about your idea... that probably can't be done without remaking the entire engine.
Just to start...that would need to add memory variables to store the 'ap' for each 'skill' for each character, also in savegame file
I can't see how Support and Independent Materia would work that way...anyway.. it involves a lot of work and I don't think someone is up to that...
*Maybe* after Q-Gears is completed... someone could change the engine to work like that...
but... nobody knows if even Q-gears itself will someday be completed... and also... if someone would be interested in make a mod like that for Q-gears...

You can modify existing weapons using hex editor.
You need to decompress kernel.bin from its g-zip format... I recall a program 'ff7_gzip' that can easily do that for you.
Then you would need to 'hex-edit' section 6 of the kernel.

try http://wiki.qhimm.com/FF7/Weapon_data for more info on hex values...
