My disaster...
« on: 2001-12-22 05:01:00 »
What happened yesterday....

5.34 AM : Computer reformat complete. Windows 98 SE CD in drive, intialising setup

5.35 AM: A very loud PRAK sound came. Computer not responding. Opened the CD drive. Cannot open fully. A piece of the CD came out(original version RM350 gone).

the whole day: left without a computer. Hurried to Low Yat Plaza (about 50Km away from my home and got an original version of windows XP Home ed (OEM). Installed it (Quite slow on my comp....)

The tragedy is that I miss windows 98  and my dad scolded me for buying XP as he thinks that I only use the computer to play games when I have to type stuff.

The best thing ~ Having windows XP. My nav couldnt install

Is that bad?

No, what's bad is that you replaced Win98 with WinXP.

Hmm... Win2000, known for it's horrible game compatibility, is actually quite superior to WinXP in that department. Half of my games (slightly older ones) simply stopped working in XP. And Win98 is superior to Win2000. :logic:

Qhimm:
Dunno if you've allready tried it but if not then this could well be the answer to all your game - related problems..
right click on the .exe or shortcut or whatever and then click the compatability tab then click the checkbox that say "run this program in compatability mode for:" then choose the OS that you know the game works under.

This solved problems for me with THPS2 and Project IGI.

i'm getting WinXP HE for christmas, i think, i might have to cough up $30. but yea qhimm is right, if your getting a gaming maching either go win98 or XP HE. win2kpro, hell even win2k, has such messed up driver priorities, and in win2kpro the users can't do sh*t unless your a admin

:o :-? Win2k has terrible game support? Strange... Except for FF7 (and possibly FF8) all my games are actually MORE stable under Win2k than they were under Win98, which is why my system is a pure Win2k system. The only problem I EVER have playing games is that every so often when I use DirectX or OpenGL (not sure which) my vid-card will crash my computer, requiring a reboot. That's my only problem.

When I get a bigger HD, I'm gonna install Win98 onto Gaia, my old-games system. Right now it only has a 1 gig HD. Not enough to install Win98 & FF7... At least the way I install them... Plus it's CD-Drive is on the fritz, and I can't afford a new one...

Ant: Are those instructions XP only? Cause I know I don't have them in W2K.

My point (which everyone apparently missed) was that WinXP is NOT a good gaming platform. I used to run Win2000, which *was* an excellent platform. The only games Win2000 couldn't run contained odd memory management (FF7, FF8) or were simply f***-old. Everything else it ran, stable as hell. Now I switched to XP, and not only lots of games stop working, a lot of my programs too! I'm happy that I can still program in MSVC++...

And for everyone's information, I have yet to see an app which starts working by messing with the oh-so-advanced compatibility settings. In my opinion, Win2000 is the best system, on all accounts. I very much regret I ever installed XP, it's a walking disaster when it comes to compatibility.

Qhimm: Whoo! Hard words. But okay, as for me, I haven't ever worked on Win NT or 2K. I only had the old crappy Win98, which was likely to hang up every 10 minutes... now that I got WinXP, it worx stable. As for the game compatibility, I can run all games that I've tested yet w/o problems...

Joey:  Only the newest Norton Antivirus (or pretty much any Virsus Scan/System Utility) will work on Windows XP.

You'll have to go out and buy Norton Antivirus 2002, or just go to http://www.grisoft.com and download AVG.  It's free.

When I did tech support for Gateway, I got a call with the same problem. A CD exploded in the drive. Had to replace the drive because it scratched the lense.

Since it wasn't my computer, I was  :rotfl:

Anyway, I feel sorry for you. Ive had a few hardware problems of my own this year(motherboard fried, power supply died).

Ok, for those who hasn't experienced it before, I'm not lying. Wonder why it happened?

D2:LOD and RA2 worked fine and my parents are now addicted to spider solitare.

DOS still exists.

After opening serval programs and trying to crash it by pressing CTRL+DEL+ALT repeatedly failed, I'm convinced that XP is stable enough for me.

I still keep the win98 CD pieces with me.

Right, that smiley is sooooo dead. I might replace it with a smaller, less annoying version, but for now it's off-limits. Ho-ho-ho.

Well a few weeks back my dad opened up his WINME case to get the cd out and it was completely scratched from the last time it was put in the drive, if you ask me it was for the best.

Actually, XP was quite a nice suprise for me. It treated ZIP files like folders and CTRL+ALT+DEL looks more like a benchmark to me.
