NeoCloudstrife's Custom Model Thread
« on: 2009-08-07 18:35:42 »
Alright, so after the new rules were put in place, i decided to start making completely original models, instead of stealing them  :-P

so what better place to start than teaming up with timu simisu and Millenia! They'll only be guiding me, however. i'll be modelling and texturing by myself (maybe i'll get a little help :D)

Anyway, the first model i was told to create Was in fact the "Sweeper" robot, which can be seen all over the FF7 world in various forms. It was a good challenge for me actually, not to easy, yet not too difficult. i managed to create him in about 13 hours, and i'm hoping ill get faster as time goes by. anyway, here's a first "finished" WIP shot of it. note i still have a little bit to do, like the grill at its "mouth", and i need to lower the front end a little bit so his arms are recessed and not just coming out of the engine.
Texturing's going to be a REAL challenge, but its nothing i can't handle :D

That looks great! :-D A tip, bake the metal material. Then download a lot of metal textures from the net, and use the clone stamp tool in photoshop.  :-o

Actually, i'll be creating the textures 100% myself, totally original. Mostly by dodging and burning. that seems to be how square do it :D

Keep in mind, guys,  that my fancy rendering method makes it look a billion times better than it is. this is how it really looks:

...lol

Wow, that looks almost detail for detail like the actual sweeper, i can't wait to see how it looks textured and ingame.

(plots) and soon you shall be making bigger, better models... then i can ask you for cigarettes randomly in the street... it'll be perfect... (evil laugh)

I highly doubt they make all their textures only by hand. In the newer movies/games they have to be using some photos.

i'm really quite sure the dont. that causes too many headaches for law related stuffs

What if they take their own photos? :-o

And this is a really nice Sweeper model, BTW. Are you planning on doing any other enemies?

No no no, whatever you do, DON'T slap a photo of a metal texture on it and call it done. Slayernext's weapons are a prime example of this.

It's better to work your way from ground up (plain gray with some grain) and adding damage, details, grease etc by hand.

i've looked over yer mesh, its quite good. here's what ya need to fix

-add a steam pipe thing on the barrel at the back
-the legs you send were a bit weird, the "thigh" wasnt lined up properly on the right, and there was a floating cone-like thing, not needed, so just delete.
-the joint inbetween the lower and upper leg parts (two rectangular peices on each side) have an unnecesary chamfer, its just to save polies, doesnt make a big diff, but just some optimization.
-the front and back of the barrel at the bototm have a strange vertex connection, just make it squares like the rest of the barrel.
-the magazine coming down frmo its gun i'd say give it a bit of a curve (add a cut halfway through it)
-make your own grate teeth! :P

otherwise great job.:D

when you get to texturing i have a number of ideas.

that looks awesome man!  May i recommend MapZone to create some of your textures, it's super easy to use and you can create textures very quickly, and finish them up in GiMP or PS.

and it's 100% free

Yeah, school just recently started, and i didnt toch it the week i had after my holiday finished, but before school, so it's been like 3 weeks since i even touched it. hopefully i'll have it textured enough for some sort of release next week, then i'll continue with my second model, which you all may or may not like :P
