Ear Infection??
« on: 2011-04-23 16:46:31 »
For the past four days, I've had a cold or the flu or something. I also had an ear infection that lasted like a day but went away. Two days ago I woke up and my ear was clogged. I tried using Q-tips but nothing was coming out. I tried making my ear pop, but it wasn't working.

Today I cleaned my ear out with a water jet thingy (the ones the doctors use) and there was some red particles floating around in the water. I did it again and two large clumps of red stuff came out. It unclogged my ear and I could hear again! But what was the red stuff? Was it just part of the ear infection, or should I go see a doctor to make sure it's not something worse?

If it is very red it is most likely blood, going to the doctor might not be a bad idea. If it is just very dark orange brown it is most likely just wax.

If it is an ear infection you need to go docs and get a check up, it may be bacterial and you will need antibiotics.  I know, cause I also have one ;)

I just got back. The doctor said my eardrum ruptured and the red stuff was blood from sinus drainage or something. He gave me some drops for the ear infection and said to stop using bobby pins and Q-tips to clean my ears out. Should clear up in a week or less.

Yeah you should not clean your ear anyway.  The wax there is usually in nice equilibrium and is for your balance. Clean outside, not in.

Tilt your head to the left or right, pour some hydrogen peroxide in your ear and keep your head level for at least 10min. Some people think it's not ok to do this. Allot of times it what the doctor recommends.

Course' never put anything in the ear canal without first consulting a doctor. It has worked for me in the past, hope this is of some use.
