General Discussion / Re: What Went Wrong?
« on: 2012-01-24 09:24:40 »
Heh, I just spent a good hour reading this whole topic...

And now I'm going to turn into everything you seem to hate, DLPB.
XIII was (is, actually, as I haven't beaten it yet) a typical (aside from no Towns, nor memorable NPCs) Final Fantasy, and was well worth the time I spent playing it. It had the usual mix of annoying characters (Vanille and Hope, ugh.) and ridiculous weapons (A fucking boomerang, really?), and it had such an interesting take on the MP aspect of the Battle System, I was honestly quite amazed. Although, it did mean I pretty much never used the Summons...

All in all, I'd rate XIII as easily within my top 5 favourite FF games. Beats the hell out of VIII, as it doesn't have the major flaw in the most common part of the game (battles, obviously) which is the sheer effort which has to be put in, not for the strategy part, as this should be strenuous, but just generally. All you had to do was use Mad Rush on VIII, and that was most random encounters done for you, other than when you wanted to Draw, which resulted in about 15, 20 minutes of "yawn~ am I done yet?"

As for the purpose of your OP, the main thing I think of when trying to find some reason as to why games have gone downhill... I'd say is the technology. Games companies are finding that they have fewer restrictions, so they play around more. Eventually, the ridiculous amount of space on a BluRay (seriously, 50 GB???) will become old-hat, and until the next-gen appears (which is unlikely to have a different format) games will begin to pick up again, as ultra-high cinematic graphics will no longer be new. So... have patience, and play the older games until then.

Finally, I can't recall who said it, but someone did say that you shouldn't stick to one franchise / developer. To this point, I proffer NaughtyDog. Never have I played a bad ND game. :D

you know what? It's starting to put me in mind of Duke Nukem Forever. and that can't be good...

I completely agree, but for meaningful content. and not the kinda meaningful content that XIII had before everyone became L'Cie....

Mmm. I'm glad you came to your senses :P
It would've looked rather childish, and required so much effort to do so as well...

Pretty much what Livesey's just said.
The only one I wasn't comfortable with was Berserker, and Bsrk fits better.

What do you mean by colour-coding the classes: each class has it's name in a colour, or class-specific materia has it's name in the class' colour?  ???

Number of games will increase though.
Does it have PSP compatibility, or will I need to keep that?
and how comfortable to use are the two analog sticks?

I'm happy you've given him permission, and I guess we have no choice but to do so, really XD

I'm with Obesebear on this one. The previous texture looks more like ice, whereas this is... pretty blue crystals (:

Having played Origins and the PSP versions, I agree completely.
Plus, if for whatever reason it occurs to you to do it, there is a very game-breaking but nifty equipment glitch for FF 1 on the PSP XD

I played it on the DS re-make, but I never really enjoyed it. I found I always had high attack but low defence for all my characters, no matter how I changed it...

Yeah, it's like a 3rd-person shooter with mechs. Not that great, but it was fun.
Sweet, I'll be playing that at some point :D

I was thinking the same.
Make it darker and his skin will take less of a pink tinge, and hir hair will be more ruddy. Should be fine with the concept's stubble (:
(oh, any chance you could make the cigarette look more like the concept one? all crumpled and battered lookin?)

Hahaa I'd forgotten about 6! It's been a while since I had my truly retro FF hat on XD

and balance is needed, yes...

And that's the kinda review it takes to get me interested.
By turn-based strategy, do you mean along the lines of final fantasy tactics?

Wow, it's my first post on this forum
and such a productive, useful post, too. well done!

and dlpb, I've seen you post this so many times I pretty much predicted the rest of it from "I want a dream not a nightmare" XD

edit:
so I just read the rumour you posted about; seems like the author of that page is a bit dim. nintendo have never run a numbered installment? 2 through 5? not to forget the original? what a dumbass.... XD

it's lookin good! so long as the legs work fine, I don't see too much of a problem (they should be slightly longer than his arms, and they seem to be so - so it looks to be rather well proportioned).

18
ahahaa how much I agree with that couldn't be measured in free pizzas. and I'm a student.

atm, I don't have an android phone, so no phone gaming for me. the only ff games I can play on mine are the gb ones, and I'm not that much of a fan of the saga series.
$4.24? I will be telling my friends about that one XD their faces lit up when I spread the word about gba emulators (although I can't think why they didn't think of it themselves...) so I imagine they'll be pleased with this :D

I played XIV. It's like a Runescape that looks like WoW. I was so disappointed...

MotionInJoy is amazing. I think the only downside I have is that after I unplug my controller it searches for and turns my ps3 on

XV on pc? due to the limited capabilities of my laptop, I would hope not. but there are ways around it... and it has been a while since what I consider a decent rpg was announced for pc (I really dislike open-map rpgs where I can get raped immediately after the intro...)
if they did do it, I hope they avoid multi-platforming it. keeping them singular is best for the game.

front mission games are time well spent?
interesting. I might have to branch out into them from FM evolved on the ps3 XD

But I generally agree. although I haven't yet beaten XII or X-2, I did have a lot of fun on X-2 before I lost it, and XII was good. I'd managed to rack up 80+ hours of just exploring and doing everything I could find to do before I lost my memory card D: I haven't yet re-attempted it. although... I had to lie to myself about it being Final Fantasy for it to be playable XD

Hmmm like FF7's magic has been preserved with the cash ins?   8-)

and how many of the cash ins had hironobu sakaguchi producing them?

so long as the battle system stays the same I will be happy, and there is no reason (according to SquareEnix's precedence for remakes and newer-gen ports) that this will be changed.

I hadn't thought that disregarding the ties would change the probability.. as I said, it's been a while X)
I'll step out now though, probability was never my strong point

24
I can't verify your script, but the probability I can walk you through.

First off, these are for each point, as you say; you need ten points to win, and there are obviously ten ways to get ten points.
10 - 0, 10 - 1, etc.

I'm assuming here that the ties give neither player a point (it has been a while since I played this battler, so I may be wrong), which makes life easier, I think.
what you have to look at is this:

to get two points, the probability (in the first round) is 0.5 AND 0.5, as you want both points. So, you have half a chance, of half a chance, and we multiply: To get the first two points, your probability is 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.25, or 25%
Doing this 10 times, gives you 0.510, which is 1/1024

(this is only for the 10 - 0 win though). Then you work out the probability of getting ten points, but giving away 1; this would simply be the same result as above, but multiplied by 0.25, so 1/4096. You do this repeatedly, until you have the probabilities for all the wins 10 - 0 through to 10 - 9

Now, you can win with any of these results, so you can win with 10 - 0 OR 10 -1 OR 10 - 2, etc, so you add the probabilities together.
Assuming I've done this right (I may be wrong, it has been a while since I did probabilities), this gives you a probability of winning the first round (without any ties at all) of approximately 2289662/1758462093 or 0.00130208209157
This does seem wrong, though, 'cause that's rather a small chance.... :o

I don't think a 1 on 1 fight in a final fantasy game can be strategic.

you really think this? I am shocked. I always thought these were where the better strategies were needed.
