Troubleshooting / FF8 crashes
« on: 2005-06-19 21:53:03 »
Well, a driver update more or less solved that problem for me (I'm currently using 71.89). It didn't run quite correctly, though, as I got scanlines and black squares. Installing the GeForce-Patch got rid of the scanlines, but not of the black squares (switching off antialiasing or anisotropic filtering didn't help). So I'm running it in software mode, which doesn't have any graphic glitches but looks ugly (and is sometimes a little slow).

I'm open to any suggestions how to get rid of the black boxes.

Troubleshooting / FF8 crashes

Hello

I recently wanted to play FF8 again and installed it. I used it to play on my old computer without problems (even on Windows XP). Getting it to run on my new PC didn't work at all. It crashes during the Eidos logo (about when the "I" in "EIDOS" is appearing).

System specs:
- CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
- Mainboard: Asus A8V Deluxe
- Graphics card: Asus V9999 GE (Geforce 6800)
- Memory: 1024 MBytes

I run Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) on it, the DirectX version is 9.0c (all Dxdiag tests ran successfully). I tried to run FF8 both with and without the GeForce Patch (tried the Non-GeForce Patch as well), tried software rendering and 3D acceleration, tried to switch off everything that can be switched off, to no avail, it just freezes. Using software rendering, I can shut down FF8 after that. That's not possible in 3D mode because I can't see the task manager window (although it's there as I can see the mouse cursor changing its shape when I move it), I have to use the reset button. I should also say that I've tried the newest nVidia drivers (71.84) as well as older versions (as long as they still support the GF 6800), but they all fail the 8-bit palette test (and none of them solve the problem).

I also created a second system partition and installed Windows 98. FF8 crashed there as well, which makes me suspect a hardware (or driver) problem. I'm more or less clueless about what else I could try. I still have my old PC on which I could play FF8, but I'd really prefer playing it on the new one.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You're right M0T. Perhaps he's relating to the Russian composer Cesar Cui?

If you do need composers, I could do some music. Not alone of course, but there are more composers around here, aren't they?

I'd really like to be a part too, but I only know some Delphi and a *very* little bit of C++ (definately not enough to be a great help).
But for new locations you need new music, right? I could do it, as long as it's MIDI.

I don't know who wrote this, but it's wrong.

FF9PAL needs to be patched heavily and only runs on CVGS, which also needs to be patched.
But it works without problems then.

I've seen ISO patches for the Spanish and French versions, but not for other languages yet.

(Why does no-one make a German patch?!)

And where do you get the programs to make these ISO's?

Doesn't SGI mean Silicon Graphics?

I think Square's using SGI Workstations for their 3D rendering.

I'd just be happy if it didn't screw up my savegames all the time when I try to edit someone's magic.

General Discussion / IE6?
« on: 2001-09-16 21:41:00 »
By any means, don't install IE6!

It doesn't support Netscape-compatible plug-ins anymore, which means that you can only use ActiveX plugins. The more important ones like Shockwave, Flash, and Quicktime have been converted to ActiveX, but some less common plug-ins aren't.
And they've placed MSN everywhere. IE5 had it everywhere too, but IE6 is even able to surpass that.

Don't download it, it's just another try of Microsoft to take over the web.

I usually do that too (or I just manipulate the enemy), but Pandora's Box is a bit different.

The very first Dragon Zombie casts it on you when he dies. So make sure you have all four Enemy Skill materias equipped when you go to the Northern Crater. There's no other chance to get it. If you've already killed your first Dragon Zombie, you can only reload and try again.

I'm also a MIDI composer. I think I sent you an example once. Well, I can't make MP3's though.

Ficedula, are you a Philip Glass fan?

General Discussion / Questions about FF9
« on: 2001-05-13 19:27:00 »
1. Odin's Sword enhances Odin's attack: if it doesn't hit the enemy (to kill it at once), it does non-elemental damage.

2. When Dagger is in trance, you can summon an eidolon, but you lose control of her since the eidolon will attack every turn unless the trance ends.

3. If you give the friendly ghosts what they want, they'll make Ozma weaker: it can then be attacked physically and Shadow elemental attacks won't heal it anymore.

4. Do you expect me to explain ALL the sidequests to you? But if you want to do them, you'd have to do it before you go to Terra because some location will be closed afterwards.

I'd recommend you to use ePSXe instead. It's so much better than bleem and CVGS.
