Anime is like watching an RPG
« on: 2007-06-29 04:34:36 »
...or at least Castle in the Sky was. Frankly, that was the first anime movie I have bothered to sit through, and it gave me the feeling that I had just beaten a really good RPG. Castle in the Sky in particular reminded me of Chrono Trigger (Zeal, etc.).

Anyway, are there any other good anime movies (I don't really want to get into a series) I should watch? I really don't watch anime, and nor do my friends, so I'm at a loss on what to watch next. If anyone knows of some other good ones out there like Castle in the Sky, let me know, please.

Castle in the sky(aka laputa) come's from studio ghibli, which is basically the japanese version of walt disney. There not what i would classify as anime but still good none the less.

I recommend you watch the following ghibli films: (in order of best to worse)
- Howl's Moving Castle
- Spirited Away
- Princess Mononoke (Ghibli's best seller)
- Porco Rosso
- The Cat Returns
- Grave of the Fireflies
... i wouldn't bother with the others, some are not so good imo.

Quote
Hellsing
Dont bother with hellsing just yet. The series is in the process of being completely re-animated (better animation & more gore, better sound, proper cinematic widescreen) to make it more accurate with the comics. Look up Hellsing:Ultimate to see what im talking about, there is a trailer of it on their website at http://hellsing.pioneeranimation.com/

Other Fav's:
- Cowboy BeBop (series)
- Akira: Special Edition
- Vampire Hunter D(1980's classic) & Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust (the character of d is illustrated by the same artist as the original final fantasy designers)
... and too many others.

I loooved howl's moving castle spirited  away was good, and so was porco rosso. My personal fave and a bit cliche would have to be EVA, not really like an RPG though, unless you count those EVA flash dating sims :-P. But I didn't know there was a Devil May Cry anime, what came first the game or the anime?

For the anime movies, I think Ghibli Studio are the best. Castle in the Sky, Pricess Mononoke, The valley of the wind... all of them are great. Personally I didn't like Spirited Away and more than likely I wouldn't like the Howls Moving Castle either, but that's just because they are not my kind. I can recongnise they great though.
The grave of the fireflies and Barefoot Gen also are great movies, althought really depressing (specially the first one).
As for Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell or Knoking on the heaven's door (Cowboy bebop), yeah, they are fine, but I wouldn't class them as great.

Another very good anime is Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO). I've seen every episode and it was very good fun.

Claymore is okay, but I think it will soon become over-rated, if it is not already.

Thanks for the suggestions! I just barely saw Howl's Moving Castle, and I thought is was really good. I think I'm going to watch Spirited Away next, since I haven't seen it yet.

I recomend, Claymore! (nice gfx, very good story, good animation) Darker Than Black (Very good gfx: 1280x720, Cool story a little bit less serious than Claymore, very good animation)

Well since its been revived...
Movies like Hoshi no Koe, and 5cm per second are lovely stories.
There are some graphic novels I also would reccomend, Planetarian being one. You don't get any choices like the traditional ones, and you can put it on autoplay, so you might as well cound this as a movie.
