Firstly, I know very little of programming or the following, so bear with me.
Midis, call for the soundcard to generate a given midi sound based on the track, for x duration (and some other settings i beleive) based on each track. Using this data, would it be possible to call on higher quality audio files that represent each respective sound and pitch? The thought just crossed my mind today and I was wondering how this would work. would it lag down the computer loading so many files so quickly, take up too much space to store em all, or even possible to use midi data like that? (kinda of like how ff7 music calls on mp3s, just at a micro level). If something like this were possible (i'm not even sure if it would sound good) it would at least allow for propper midi looping and cues (not sure how much ff7 uses cues).
Thanks for whoevers time is spent to explain.

You are describing a SoundFont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SoundFont), which is used in FF7 already.
-
Thankye, it possible to add new ones in?
-
Possible and has been done atleast twice.
The problem is that the FF7PC midi's are shoddy versions of the original music, so no matter how good the soundfont is it won't sound as good as the psf's.
-
are the midi's replaceable? :P
-
Yes, there is a project[/url that does that already. (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8160.0)

I think he meant the actual MIDI files the game used originall. those are just MP3 files, as epic as they are.
I Think you may be on to something there, timu. if we can get a perfect soundfont AND perfect midi files, the songs should sound as good/better than the original psx music.
But, I betcha the FF7 midi's have got some super secret format that we can't edit because we doing have a way to make midi's in that format...

I am not exactly sure what you are saying here. The midi files are *perfect*. The original midi files open in sonar 8 and guitar pro 5.2
Very similar to what finalfantim had done with his OST remake, in this video i took the original midi chu.mid
and used a custum software synthesizer to playback original midi data (in place of general midi, or a soundfont in this case)

ff7 comes with soundfont files (look for *.sf2)
These are replaceable http://home.comcast.net/~somedude41/
The annoying thing that I remember about soundfonts is that sonar doesnt like them unless you have a soundblaster card. :-(

Sounds kinda funny. The guitar sounds computerized
-
That is because it IS computerized. That is midi for you.
Making a soundfont that would out-do FinalFantim's music would be hell-in-a-can.

Sounds more like WWE-ish to me....
-
pardon me for not doing the research myself, but how do you make a soundfont?
-
Get the program Vienna from Creative. I hope you have a soundblaster card.
