The uninstaller deleted stuff unrelated to the program.

Hello! So, I'm in trouble. I was installing the latest version of the Black Chocobo program, and I selected the documents folder in which I store all my FF7 goodies. Upon noticing how the program did not create a specific folder for itself, thus ending up cluttering up said document folder, I decided to uninstall the program to get rid of it and try again (this time after manually creating a new folder for the program beforehand).

Little did I knew that the uninstaller the program uses, apparently removes *everything* within the folder, even if not related to the program. It's not moved to the recycle bin, but rather instantly deleted altogether. Et voila, and all my custom FF7 files (my own custom soundtracks and mods and what not) were promptly obliterated.

I realize that the chances of regaining said files are slim to none (hundreds of hours of work gone ...), but I thought you should know. Maybe I'm alone in having this happen to me, but it might be worth either reworking how your uninstaller works, or at least placing a warning somewhere.

This excites me to no end. I love the new translations.

3
I, too, did a complete playthrough (50-60 hours) with R01 installed and never encountered any instability or crashes; apart from a typo or two in the dialogue, it appeared completely free from errors.

4
I'm looking forward to this so much.

5
In connection to my previous question: What's the easiest way to be notified when R02 is released? Any social media on which you announce these kind of news, for example?

6
Goodness! Thank you for replying. I shall endeavour to sit tight and wait for the next release, then - or maybe plan for two playthroughs.  ;)

I am in the progress of replaying FF7, and now I find out that there's finally a completed relocalization of the entire game! Unfortunately, I have the Steam version of the game, and any attempt at converting it to the '98 version has ended poorly, with all kinds of graphical anomalies and what not. Am I right in assuming that there are no current plans to make Reunion and/or Beacause to work with the Steam version of the game?

Either way, thank you so much for all your hard work. It's truly impressive.

@Kindo

See if this works: Everything is made of white

Thanks for the tip - the download links are out of date, but at least now I know what's up and I can keep searching for a solution. I noticed it's a problem that's been posted many times already, but my keywords while searching proved insufficient. Sorry if it's annoying receiving the same questions over and over again...

EDIT: Found this post and followed its instructions, and now it's all working again. Thank you for your help, and thanks to all the modders and coders who help improve on this timeless classic!

Greetings,

I seem to have utterly failed at installing this properly; I downloaded the latest version (0.7.11b) and unpacked it into the installation directory. I've tried leaving the config on default, but the results are the same. Basically, the graphics don't work. At all. A suspect title screen where most of the stuff is missing, and once in game, it's all white, like so:

While selecting the custom driver in the FF7 Config, I do get the message that all should be okay, by the way.

Thank you in advance, and thank you, Aali, for all the work you've put into this.  :)

## USER OPTIONS ##
## If you just want to play the game, these are the only options you'll want to change.

# set the window size (or fullscreen resolution) of FF7
# 0 means use original resolution (whatever ff7.exe provides)
# preserve_aspect adds black borders as needed to preserve a 4:3 aspect ratio
window_size_x = 1920
window_size_y = 1080
preserve_aspect = yes
fullscreen = yes

# mod directory
# subdirectroy of mods/ where textures will be loaded from
# does not affect the old external textures feature, those should still go in textures/
mod_path = none

# check your driver settings if this option doesn't seem to work
enable_vsync = yes

# limit snowboard, coaster and highway minigames to refresh rate / 2, i.e. 30fps for a 60hz display mode
# vsync must be enabled and working for this to have any effect
minigame_framelimiter = on

# same thing, but for the battle swirl
battleswirl_framelimiter = off

# allow FF7 to use linear filtering for its textures
# some things look slightly better with this option on, but alot of textures just lose their detail
linear_filter = off

# plugin used to play music, the FF7Music plugin MUST be enabled for FF7Music to work.
# If no music plugin is loaded the game will play MIDI as usual but FF7Music will NOT work.
#music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp

## ENHANCEMENTS ##
## All the little extras that weren't part of the original game, default options include only trivial bug fixes.

# make all dialog boxes transparent, same effect as the transparent dialog boxes YAMP patch
transparent_dialogs = on

# allow max hp/mp to go over 9999, same effect as the YAMP patch by dziugo
break_9999limit = no

# include armor in magic defense calculation
mdef_fix = yes

# expand battle viewport to cover entire screen and make the battle menu transparent
new_battle_interface = on

# post-processing shader, used to apply fullscreen effects
post_source = shaders/bloom2.post
enable_postprocessing = no

## ADVANCED OPTIONS ##
## Don't fiddle with these unless you know what you're doing.

# use shaders, if available and supported
# turn shaders off to use the OpenGL 1.1 backend
use_shaders = yes

# prevent glitches due to rounding errors by rendering in the nearest (larger, if supported)
# multiple of the original resolution and up/down-scaling
prevent_rounding_errors = yes

# enable alpha blending for textures without an existing blending effect
fancy_transparency = on

# display frames per second counter in upper right corner
show_fps = no

# display some real-time debug information
show_stats = no

# store external textures in a compressed cache for increased performance
# compression is not lossless, some artifacts may appear when this option is in use
# texture cache does NOT update automatically if the source image changes, however, deleting anything from the cache
# will cause that file to be recreated from the source
compress_textures = yes

# use pixel buffer objects to speed up texture loading
# will probably crash horribly on ATI cards but should work for NVIDIA users
use_pbo = no

# replace FF7's default framelimiter timer source
use_new_timer = yes

# use a more stable (but less accurate) timer to control FF7's framelimiter
# this option has no effect unless the use_new_timer option is on
use_stable_timer = no

# plugin used to play movies, FFMpeg is the only choice for now
movie_plugin = plugins/ffmpeg_movies.fgp

## MODDER OPTIONS ##
## These options are mostly useful to modders and should not be enabled during normal play.

# read files directly instead of using LGP archives
# for example; if FF7 is looking for aaab.rsd in char.lgp, this option will make it open direct/char/aaab.rsd first,
# if this file doesn't exist it will look for the original in the LGP archive
direct_mode = off

# show every failed attempt at loading a .png texture
show_missing_textures = no

Releases / Re: [REL] Final Fantasy VII FMV Restoration
« on: 2012-09-12 17:32:14 »
EDIT: Apologies! It seems to be a problem with Aali's custom drivers, rather than the FMV Restoration mod. I have a different problem with those drivers, so I had disabled them temporarily, which resulted in the FMV's not playing; re-activating the custom drivers brought the FMV's back in their full glory. I'll move on to Aali's thread to ask for support there, instead. Sorry for the bother!

Greetings,

First of all, thanks for providing us with proper versions of the FMV's. I am, however, having problems getting it to work. I've successfully installed the movies (I chose to place them in [FF7 Root]/movies), and all seems to be well. Afterwards, I ran ff7moviedir.exe in order to alter the registry, and I still encountered no errors. For some reason, the FMV's will no longer play in the game, though, and all I'm met with are a black screen during the opening FMV, or, if an FMV is triggered during gameplay, it's instantly skipped. The unaltered FMV's (fresh installation, non-Ultima version) worked perfectly, so it's only when the game has been told to play your versions, that it doesn't seem to work. I'm hoping there's a solution, but if not, I have no idea how to restore the original movies path (basically, undo what ff7moviedir.exe did).

I appreciate any help.

I think the problem of it restarting when you change rooms is caused by having the midi disabled.  But honestly I can't really remember how I fixed that anymore.
Also if you deleted all the files in the midi.lgp or any of the other midi LGP's I think that also causes it because FF7Music isn't a standalone program.  So when you change rooms, the midi needed isn't technically running so the ff7 program searches for it all over again.

Hope this helps or provides some kind of insight

No, obesebear, it even does that if you don't delete the stuff in midi.lgp.

Hmm... Well, I need to delete those midis in order to get rid of them while playing my custom MP3 soundtrack (LoopBe1 program doesn't solve the problem for me, for som reason), so even if that was the cause of this problem, I would first need to find some other way to mute midi. It's odd... I have the exact same system set-up as I had a year ago, and back then, I managed to get this working perfectly. I do wonder what's wrong...

EDIT: Actually, this did fix the problem! I restored the midifiles in midi.lgp (copied over the ontouched copy from the disk), and now the music no longer restarts upon zoning. Now, however, the sound volume is extremely low - barely audible. I'll keep fiddling.

EDIT 2: My hard-to-hear audio was obviously the result of poor sound set-up on my end. I just had to change some devices around, so now it's all good. The game is running just as perfectly as it did a year ago, with enhanced 3D models, higher resolution, and my own, custom soundtrack playing to my ears' great pleasure! The only problem I see now is that now that I'm on a widescreen monitor, the image doesn't quite cut it for me, but that's a topic for another forum thread. :)

Ok, I HATE that ff7music :D I love it- and hate it :D

I love it- because I LOVE that mp3's :D

I hate it- because I HATE it, when I change a room and go into another and the music file restarts^^

Is that a bug? Or is that a ff7music Special :D

Thx for help ;)

Deniz

Has this been solved by anyone? I have the exact same problem - whenever I zone into a new area, the current music track restarts from the beginning.

You sure you can alt+f4 out of the black screen?
Kindo, try hitting enter on numpad several times when on the black screen. If it sends you to main menu that means you have wrong path to movies in registry.
I have actually reached a different stage of solving my game problems now. I've installed it on my Vista partition, and movies and in-game both run perfect (even with enhancing patches and the like.) I had a problem with crashing upon entering battle, but it was quickly resolved by replacing battle.lgp with the default one on the install disc (high res cloud patch might have been the culprit there.) Now I have another problem instead:

When I installed the drivers for my sound card, I can no longer manipulate the music (midi) volume in-game. I need to mute that since I'm using the FF7music patch to play better-quality music (straight from the OST.) Is ther any way to turn the midi music off outside the game, in some kind of configuration file, or possibly even have the OS itself mute all midi music? I'm new to Vista, and I can't find any midi volume in the control panel or anywhere else.

Man, I've been sitting for days trying to get my FF7 to run properly. It really feels like I'm close. So very, very close...

EDIT: Ah, there was a thread about it here: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=7384.0

Problem solved! I can finally, FINALLY play the game! <3

Problem: My movies play upside-down, or my movies don't play at all.

Solution: Download and install the upside-down movie patch here.  If you have ffdshow installed (it comes with some popular codec packs, including the K-Lite codec pack and the CCCP), you must disable ffdshow's "True Motion" support through the ffdshow Video Decoder Configuration.

(Side note: Some experimenting on using ffdshow to improve FF7 movie quality.)

--------

Problem: When I run FF7, it just hangs at a black screen.

Solution: A movie is supposed to be playing, see question above.

I assume my problem relates to these two sections of the FAQ: when I start the game, all I get is a black screen, and I must alt+F4 to exit the program. I tried installing the above patch, and I tried disabling 'True Motion' (and other settings) according to the instructions given. Still no dice. The weird thing is that it worked a moment ago - for the first time - so I exited in order to apply patches and tweaks (I was running on a clean installation, with 1.02 patch, for trouble-shooting,) but the game stopped working when I tried to start it up again right away! I had done nothing at all in between the time I exited, and the time I re-started the program. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the problem was back. I am positively confused here and thankful for any advice.

Sincerely,

Kindo
