Title: ff7.exe icon redux
Post by: willis936 on 2009-09-06 17:05:03
Satoh's icon:

And here's the clean 1.02 exe it's embedded with:

I understand some of the patches that look for specific file sizes may or may not work.
If this is an issue patch your exe, download the icon, then use IconChanger, rather simple to use and well made program.

I am using Windows 7 and I have multiple backgrounds scattered throughout these desktop shots so I apologize for the lack of consistency. :-D
If it's an issue I can retake them on a gray desktop background.

I did something like this. Personally, I like mine better, since I did it in high res so it's scalable in Vista, but I can't share it since I used some resources that weren't mine without permission.

Uh oh.
I didn't contact Satoh about this, he just posted it for me in a thread and he seemed like he didn't care much.

NICE!
Covarr, let's at least see a pic plz :-)

Here's the PNG version:

I got the high-res logo without text from here:
http://insertcredit.net/ff7/logo.htm

All I did was rotate it, resize, and add the text and a white border around the comet. I don't remember if the ICO version has manually scaled images for 16x16, 32x32, etc. It might just be the 256x256 that scales nicely in Vista.

Perhaps ditch the text entirely?
Would be nicer just to have the meteor, as it says Final Fantasy VII on the icon caption :)

That.

Looks just like Satoh's.  I think he used the same site.
So

Now what?

Using This Icon, I don't really look at the icons for files, but might as well have a Higher res version  :-)

I scanned in my PAL box: http://www.imagenerd.com/uploads/ff7_logo_hi_res-fybL3.jpg

Might come in handy?  :-)

I'm sure it will at some point ;-)

But we'll have to do some smoothing on it.

EDIT:

Here (http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/3085/ff7logohiresfybl3.png)'s what I was able to do in a few minutes with GIMP's blur/sharpen tool. The tail still looks quite bad, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult for someone with more knowledge of image editing than me (i.e. someone with any knowledge of image editing) to make it look delightfully smooth.

No, I'm comparing a few of the minor details, and it would seem he didn't use the same source image as me.

Ah yes, I see the color difference in the tail.

Okay, just want to make sure this released is sanctioned under his name only for now.

Hey guys, this project caught my interest. That meteor image that Covarr found looked really good, so I'm working on making one from that scan that hotdog963al uploaded.

This is what I've got so far...I've filled in the missing parts in gray, all that's left to do is use a clone stamp tool to color them properly, then apply some smoothing filters. Feel free to give input!

Thanks! That means a lot considering I don't really regard myself to be that artistically skilled. Here it is clone stamped, but no filter yet...finding the right combo of filters for this is gonna be tricky...

Not really. The game icon has nothing to do with the graphics in the game itself

All Right! Filters applied, and lots of manual blurring/smoothing done. I'd say this is finished... Now it's time to add some transparency and make it into an icon!

(http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/8237/ff7meteor.th.jpg) (http://img403.imageshack.us/i/ff7meteor.jpg/)

EDIT: All right, here's my attempt at an icon...made more or less from scratch! Tell me what you think!

Here's a PNG of what I've got
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6472/ff7iconpreview.png)

Click here (http://www.geocities.com/yamzta333/Files/ff7.ico) to grab the .ico file!
*Note: you have to right click and save target/link as... because geocities sucks.

I'll give the config icon a whirl, too...

EDIT THE SECOND:
Here's a quick FF7Config. Hope you like it!

Wow that looks great!

Awesome awesome work.

I'm putting the exes that you did in the OP if that's ok.

EDIT:  A few critiques (just ignore them if you'd like :-D):
There is a white shadow missing on the text so on a black background there is no text (can look cool, but the tail is also dark and the lack of contrast looks silly)
^^^ Simply put don't use on a black background.
The config icon when scaled down looks a little choppy because the details don't really translate into smooth edges, same goes with the text.
just my thought: a straight redo of the old config icon.

Anything in the above bit is likely subject to controversy so let's just say it's already been misinterpreted and there is no "right" way to take it.

Post by: titeguy3 on 2009-09-07 15:19:44
Thanks for the input. All perfectly viable things.

To the first critique, I tried that initially, but the original ff7.exe icon has no white text outline, and with good reason. It doesn't scale down very well...it ends up looking grey and smeared and ugly. I found that this ends up looking best, although it just barely shows up when it's startmenu sized still.

To the second, I'm no artist, I can try to upscale the original icon smoothly, but I can't guarantee that it'll look good. I'll give it a try, though.

EDIT: Here's my attempt at a more classic ff7config icon. It's scaled up, re-outlined, and filtered. I didn't bother making it super detailed since the details get lost when it's downscaled anyways...

Grab it here (http://www.geocities.com/yamzta333/Files/ff7configorig.ico).
*Again, right click and save target/link as...

Mine had a white outline around the text and the comet, and it scaled down fairly well. The trick is to use add a white stroke to the layer, and make sure it's about 4-5px for the comet, and 2-3px for the text.

Here's what it looked like on my desktop: (http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/8964/captureii.png)

Actually, now that I've seen it on my desktop I like your first config icon more, titeguy.

What I did was... Download them, move them to my FF7 folder, replaced my exe and config with titeguy3's and then created the exe as a shortcut and that's it! Also, if you used Dzuigo's patches, you will have to re-install them again seeing as how titeguy3 doesn't have those implemented on there.

Harruzame, you can just download them as an icon and use a program called Icon Changer (google etc.) to embed it into the exe if you don't want to repatch your exe.

Alternatively, you can just download the icon rather than the exe and place them in your ff7 directory and then on the desktop shortcuts > right click > properties > change icon > browse ff7directory > select the icon > ??? > Profit

I prefer the first method just so it's not just the shortcut.
I also use ff7music so I have to select my exe for the shortcut icon.

Is it just me or none of the icons look better than the original one on most of the sizes like the super-common 32x32?

Yeah, that was pretty sad the original one was that small. Guess a reconstruction try is in demand too. :D

the FF7.EXE from 1.02 uses a 32x32 8bit colour icon (well acording to Res tuner) or if you use 7zip and open the EXE and extract the icon windows will show it as 32x32

really? it looks like shit... I guess its cause of the 8 bit color?

yea proberly, here is the original ICO (the program used here is a free program called resedit). Its 32x32, 8bit, 256 colours
