hmm, I was going to say "it onyl works for me with RIVA selected because otherwise the game crashes every time I run it", but for kicks I just tried it again, and it worked with TNT selected, lol. Every other time I tried it always crashed, wonder why it worked this time. Oh well I don't care, it's actually working now, thanks!   :-D

HELP!!!

Firstly, greetings to all!  I'm new here as a user, but I've read a lot of the pages in my own personal quest for FF7 D3D glory!

To keep things straight-forward and to make it easy to understand my problem, I will lay out the situation in as organized a way as possible:

RELEVANT SPECS
===========
- Win2k
- GeForce 6600 GT (ForceWare 93.71)
- AC97 onboard sound

PROBLEM SYMPTOMS
==============
With 1.02 patch + High Res patch:
- Crash at end of first battle when the game should transition to the menu screen
- I have also gotten the game to crash by entering the menu screen prior to the first battle
- Graphics are beautiful and immaculate

With original ff7.exe and Software Rendering:
- Game will transition to menu screen after first battle without crashing...Slow as per the norm with software rendering

With original ff7.exe and D3D in Win98 compatibility mode:
- Game doesn't crash in this area, but the colors are garbled and the background is black

HOW I GOT THESE RESULTS
=============================
For 1.02patch results:
1) Experiment w different Nvidia video drivers
2) Erase my video codecs and reinstall as per miracle.flame's guide
3) Apply 1.02patch
4) Apply High Res patch
5) Enable Hardware Acceleration via Nvidia/TNT configuration setting
6) Experiment w different settings using RivaTuner
7) Experiment w different compatibility settings (or none)
8) Experiment w different levels of vid hardware acceleration
9) Experiment w different levels of audio hardware acceleration

Notes:
- Different drivers didn't make a difference
- Hacking my registry instead of using the config file didn't make a difference
- RivaTuner didn't make a difference
- I wonder if RivaTuner works for my vid card (ie if it is *able* to turn off my 8-bit paletted textures)
- the 1.02 patch didn't work in any other compatibility mode than NT4.0 (which didn't help)

For original ff7.exe results:
1) Everything above except 3), 4), and 5)
2) Results obtained for original ff7.exe with D3D came from hacking my registry instead of using the config
3) I got D3D to work using Win98 compatibility mode, but with the aforementioned graphic problems

THEORIES AT THIS POINT
======================
1) I have seen a couple people mention the possibility of the sound in the game causing it to crash.  In fact I vaguly remember one user amongst us who had discovered a bug in the code specifically related to music and after-battle transitions but I didn't see any record of them posting their fix for it.
2) Perhaps the game is crashing with the 1.02patch because (perhaps) my vid card supports 8-bit paletted textures but (perhaps) I lack the ability to turn them off even with RivaTuner

I've tried a lot of things by this point and I've read a lot of the articles that have been written about the various problems getting FF7 to work. If any of the more experienced users have any advice or leads or suggestions that I haven't already tried, I would be greatly appreciative.  I've seen such beautiful screenshots from people playing this epic game on newer vid cards with all the new patches, it would be a shame to have to play the game in software rendering mode.

PS Pursuant to vague bits of information I saw suggesting that the FF7 music may be the problem, I have started looking into the newest (v1.51) FF7Music patch.  No results yet however.

Thanks again to anyone who can offer help!!!

As an add-on to my previous post:

HOLY CRAP DOES THIS GAME LOOK GOOD NOW!!
(I installed chocobo patch + High res Cloud patch + NPC patch + Advent patch on the original ff7.exe while I figure out a way to use D3D)

I guess the REALLY big thing I'm missing out on right now is the High Res game patch that only works for the 1.02patched verison of ff7.exe... I suppose if I never find a solution for my problem, at least I can play knowing that Odin's Cut will look as it should :)

Got a known problem but with an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 GFX card.

Whenever I'm in a loading zone like a battle or when you exit the church with Aeris, the game freezes or I get a closing error.
I don't have any FSAA turned on or anything like that. I know the sound is choppy alot in game which is annoying. I have the 1.02 patch. I've tried the Hi-Res patch but that just makes it worse.

So much for my success story on the other page. This time I really do need help and in a rather big way.

A minor question before we get to the big one for the FF7 gurus. Is there any way of getting the black off the bottom of the screen?

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h124/psychicdreams/ff72007-04-1216-41-45-53.jpg
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h124/psychicdreams/ff72007-04-1216-37-16-29.jpg

Fraps shows only the bottom of the screen as black, but my monitor shows black on all four sides, just more on the bottom. I thought about moving my desktop size down to 640x480 to see if it would fix it, but apparently 640x480 no longer exists with newer computers, since the lowest I could go was 800x600 (which didn't fix it a single whit anyway.) I also have Saint's high-res patch in there, in case that might be pertinent information.

Now onto the BIGGER problem. I can't really play this game right.

You see, I just updated my processor to a dual-core (AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2), which ended up forcing me to reinstall my windows. This time I put in SP2 as well for my XP Professional. I'd made a LOVELY backup of my games with Acronis and was just going to put it right back thank you just as it was, except somehow the backup got corrupted and I had to reinstall the game with all my patches and mods. Not fun, but I could live with it.

This time around, I'm having quite a bit of problems I'd never had before. I had gridlines, which I fixed, with antialiasing and all and it looks beautiful. I have ff7music and it sounds great to go along with the pretty graphics. However, I keep crashing. This isn't really RANDOM so much as...

I get one fade to black successful and the next time, it WILL crash. The screen will go away and not come back and I have to hard restart to get anywhere. I only get that one successful fade to black after I first start up the game. If I quit and start it back up again, it'll just fade to where its trying to load the save game and crash. It especially does this after random battles. Can't complete one. It's unplayable. I tried compatibility mode with 98 and 95, still the same.

I have a NVIDIA Geforce 7600 GS video card, with 93.71 drivers. I did have the 91.7-something before for a long time with no problems. I only recently updated my video drivers so I could play Bethesda Software's Oblivion. It probably didn't need it, but with this fresh install of windows, I figured, what the hey?

Can anyone help?

EDIT: Oh dear...I found the problem and now I feel so stupid. I'm going to feel comfortable blaming my brain for going idiotic because I'd been installing a lot of programs and games yesterday and today...At least that's my story and I'm sticking with it :p

For those who might want to know/have this problem: when you install the game, make sure the required directshow and directx 5 it wants in there are installed. Even if you think that since directx 9 should be more than enough, put it in anyway.  I ended up uninstalling and putting in each patch one by one and checking each and every time I put in something new just to be sure and it ran as smooth as glass. Even fixed the black on all sides that appeared with Saint's patch by touching up the monitor size with no ill-effects for overall. I'll just slink away in shame for my most idiotic mistake now... :-P

The black bar is not removable.  FF7 for PSX had a display resolution of 320x200 (or thereabouts), so there is some extra space on your screen when you run it at 320x240 (or double that at 640x480) to keep the aspect ration the same (and because it was no doubt easier to write it that way).

Ohhh, okay. ^^ It's just a tiny pet peeve. Doesn't bother me that I can't get rid of it, I'll still play the game as usual. Thanks!

Hey Everyone!

I've read the FAQ and I didn't really find a lot of help for the ATI folks :/ But i have a big major problem!

So I downloaded the 1.02 patch installed it, changed my config settings through the editor but still no fix :/

All I get is a black screen with the Square Soft logo music intro playing, then it cuts out before any image or the next song loads... I tried it in both hardware rendering and software rendering... same results.

Here are my system specs:
XP Pro, legit copy with SP2
3.0 MHZ Pentium IV Processor
1Gb RAM
lots and lots of HD space...
ATI RADEON x300 SE

I used to be able to run this game fine (no crashes at all, but patched a bit :/)

If you could help me, i'll be in your debt! :D

Have you installed the upside-down movie patch?  If you are getting a black screen (no video) this is the first thing you should try.

Is there anyway to enable FSAA with Geforce 6 series?

Yes, download The_Saints Higher-Resolution Patch. With this, you'll have no gridlines when enabling AA.

:-) tried it and not working... you meant FSAA code right? I think it is for old Geforce Models not the recent one... Even when I use that code and use 2x2 AA I still get gridline... I am using Geforce 6600 btw...

I just wanna verify how to correct the massive grids i'm gettin on ff7. I'm runnin a geforce 5700 so my best bet is to get the detonator 45.32 drivers?  Just unsure because i found a riva tuner compatible with the current driver i'm runnin , which happens to be the newest one available(90somethingorother).  I tried turning off the aa and editing the config file but to no avai.  lI'm runnin on vista ultimate.

Also i have the 1.02 patch and the high res patch and movie patch and i thinks thats all :|

edit: i'm retarded restored the original config code made sure 1.02 was set to tnt and everything is gravy peace out happy 4th of july

So, I read through all of this thread. Here is my advise:

People with sound but no video and you use K-Lite codec pack (and probably any other all in one type pack) wither completely disable ffdshow (not recommended) or go to the ffdshow video configuration tool (I don't know what it is called in other packs) and disable the true motion.

People who don't get any video and get a black screen. I just installed this on six computers today, and on one the only way it would work is if i installed the movie player (or whatever its called) on the autostart screen you get when the install disc is inserted.

Of course I would not post here if i did not have a problem. Ha Ha. Well here it is:
               Specs:
I have a geforce 8600m gt (the latest omega drivers installed)
Win Xp dual boot with mac OS X on the main hd partition
                intel duo core 2.4 ghz
              Problem:
I have installed the 1.02 patch and when i enter the game, my characters are black. I think it could be a texture problem, but I don't know enough about that area to say so.

Yes, I know that this has made threads elsewhere, but most people who talk on this thread don't or haven't posted on those. I will try to post a picture of the problem.

                                                                                                                                                                                            Narishma

             P.S.
Here is  pic from someone else haveing the same problem.
http://jemym.no-ip.com/ff7blackcharacters2.jpg
I have since uninstalled the game and set i up again in software rendering mode, which I hate just to let yall know. And since it will come up, No, I am not from Texas just because I say yall.

I've got the same problem.
Its graphics-card-related.
Its with every Geforce-8-Card in Windows XP.
In Vista, Magically, the game works fine on a GF8.
I dont have another solution, i even installed Vista on my PC just (!) because of that.

K, that is really lame, because i can not use an older set of drivers which I know would fix the problem. Time to shoot Nvidia. It is really funny because I made sure I got an Nvidia card instead of a radeon. My radeaon 9800 pro ( top of the line when i got it and still would run most anything) had a power port thing and it broke which made the card unusable. Now Nvidia is being stupid too. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. O WEll.

Yeah, its really too bad.
But, its time to get to know why this problem occurs.
Does anyone know what could be wrong with the nVidia drivers or anything else, and why it's working in Vista? What does Vista have, what XP doesn't?

From what I have been able to figure out, which is not much, Nvidia has released a whole string of bad drivers. People are saying that they are mishandling 8-bit textures again or something like that.
I can't find anything straight forward about it.

P.S.
For those of you with a similar issue, DO NOT replace your drivers with the 158.22 set from Nvidia. It may be my comp but I don't think so, because others have had problems (granted not as bad as mine) too. My copy of Xp died and I had to reformat and reinstall..
.........IT SUCKED. Be careful!

 - Edit -
I was just playing and i noticed that the characters actually do have color. You can see it in some areas of the game, but it is really dark so I think the characters just need to brighten up lol.

I've got the same problem.
Its graphics-card-related.
Its with every Geforce-8-Card in Windows XP.
In Vista, Magically, the game works fine on a GF8.
I dont have another solution, i even installed Vista on my PC just (!) because of that.
Just what I thought.
GPU-drivers related!

Yes, there are texture problems, I've experienced them too, and there is NO solution for this at the moment, except of playing the game in Windows Vista.

See the NVIDIA debugging thread.

i have tried with and without patches, but every time i start my game, it says theres an error and closes before anything shows up beyond the initial black screen. ive used the 1.02 patch, and still the same thing. ive done and applied everything that i could find that has to do with the game and getting it to run or fix bugs/problems/whatever and i still get the same thing again and again
