Not sure what the best forum for this is...

I remember using a bunch for the original PC release, like some utility that let you mod GFs, a mod that gave you max GF boost all the time and a mod that let you draw the max amount in one go. Im guessing those dont work for the remaster anymore, unless someone has made new ones to be compatible with the remaster?

Also, is there any working speedhack for the remaster other than the built in 3x boost? I find 3x too fast and 1x too slow. Using cheat engine's speed hack doesnt seem to do anything for some reason.

2
I checked the documentation but im confused, what does this do exactly, and does it work for the FF8 remaster?

3
I did some testing and noticed something odd. Jenova-Birth's attacks are not flagged as short range in proud clod, but they are short range in game...characters in the back row will take half damage from it's laser attacks.

The tail laser attacks also suffers a 1/3rd damage penalty, like the one you get when you linked an all materia to fire materia, even though it is flagged as "start as multiple" (same as a summon, which does not receive a damage penalty for hitting all enemies). Its not flagged as one row only or toggle multiple either.

4
Is there a known issue where editing the kernel can cause text to glitch?

I edited several weapons/armor to include more text descriptions, and never got a warning message that the text was exceeding limits. But for some reason, Tifa's limit break now says "B Rush" in battle instead of "Beat Rush" even though i never touched her limit break or any text related to it. Any idea what could be causing that?

It looks like monster magical attacks do decent damage, but anything physical seems to do very little damage.

Do monsters use a different physical damage formulae? Im looking at jenova-birth in the proud clod editor, and the damage isnt matching up with what its doing in game. It's level 25 with a strength of 38 which gives it a base damage of about 96. All of its attacks are listed as having an attack strength of 48, so they should all do 48/16 * 96 = 288 damage or so.

But tail laser only does about 110 damage or so to my characters, and my DEF can't reduce it by more than 50%. Its not a range attack, and its listed as a "starts as multiple" attack so it shouldnt suffer any damage penalties for attacking more than one character at once. Either proud clod isnt showing the correct stats, or there are some other modifiers in play that its not showing.

The only way those numbes make sense would be if Jenova-birth uses it's "back attack" value of 16 instead of its strength value of 38, but that doesnt make sense because its not a back attack fight....

Edit : Interestingly, Jenova-birth's standard laser attack does about 175 damage to characters in the front row and half that to characters in the backrow, even though it is NOT listed as a short range attack and should not be affected by the row modifiers...the tail laser attack also suffers a half damage penalty vs characters in the back row, and it does suffer the 1/3rd damage penalty you get when you linked an all materia to single target magic materia. But the attack is flagged as "start as multiple" so it shouldnt be getting a damage penalty for that...

Up till the Shinra Headquarters, monster damage is actually decent and a potential threat to the party. Soldier 3rd class was hitting me for about 80 damage per flying sickle which is pretty significant given that your characters have about 500 hp at the time.

Right after leaving Midgar though, monster damage drops dramatically to the point where they dont pose any threat at all to your party barring some special encounters like the Midgar Zolom. Mandragora do less than 20 damage to chaacters in the front row for example, and your defense hasn't increased much since the Shinra HQ portion of the game (plus, defense only reduces damage via a % so a few points of defense doesnt matter much anyway).

Part of the problem seems to be that some monsters have suspiciously low levels for that portion of the game (kalm fangs and mandragora are both level 10, while the other monsters are about level 14 and the party is probably at least level 15 by now). But it seems like a rather strange decision to have monsters so much weaker after the early portion of the game, rather than the reverse.

Gameplay / [FF7 and FF8] Modding questions

Is there a way to change what items are available in shops? Mainly for FF7.

For FF8, how do you edit GFs so that they have certain abilities on their to-learn list? I know how to edit the ALREADY LEARNT abilities using the Quezacotl editor, but that doesnt let me edit what abilities are grayed out and available to learn. The hyne editor lets me see the grayed out abilities, but any other ability that i add to the list is set to "learnt" status and i cannot change it to 0 ap.

So for example, Quezacotl can learn HP-J by default (grayed out, have to spend AP to learn), but neither editor lets me set Shiva to have the same thing, Hyne only lets me add it to Shiva as an already learnt ability and I cannot edit the AP for it to set it to 0 ap. Is there a way to do this?

This doesnt appear to allow you to edit the level scaling formulae...(like how deep sea research center adds +15 to the level of enemies) :(

I see the world map encounter subject is quite hot now.

Thanks, does that mean there is no tool to edit world map encounters at the moment?

Field map encounters : Deling just shows formations, do all formations have an equal chance of appearing? The game doesn't seem to do that (e.g. Elnoyles and Iron Giants are extremely rare in Estahr city after the lunar cry, while imps, turtapods and toramas are really common). Is there a way to edit the formations themselves, to change which enemies are in the formations?

Kind of late, but i got 100 points on my first try just by leaving it at the naming screen for ages. Is it possible that you alt-tabbed out and the game didnt run in the background, so the timer wasnt continuing?

After looking into the damage formulaes a bit more, it seems that regular magic spells are pretty underpowered in FF7. It is much easier to buff physical damage (some ultimate weapons let you hit 4x physical damage pretty easily), and 4x cut lets you hit 4 times.  Quadra magic is only a 2x damage buff and the most powerful single target spell (comet 2) only lets you deal about 32k damage in total, not taking into account enemy M DEF. You can use MP turbo to increase the damage by up to 50%, but that requires you to use at least 4 slots, to link quadra with comet and MP turbo with a second comet materia (or substitute one or more of the materia with master magic materia, but that takes forever to make). At that point, you may as well just cast knights of the round.

Not taking into account enemy skill materia, summons also start outdamaging regular damage spells as early as Kujata (Sleeping forest). Main problem is the 1/3rd damage penalty that linking magic materia with all materia has, and MP cost quickly becomes irrelevant once you can stock up a decent amount of tents or turbo ethers.

How do you use this editor to edit the encounter rates on the world map?

14
How is it a writing problem if :

-Zack knew Shinra well enough to address him familiarly

-Cloud "remembers" this and reacts accordingly

Obviously at this point square had not filled in all the details and Zack was only a minor background character. They probably weren't thinking that far enough ahead.

15
But the reason why the game wont allow you to use to use magic without a GF equipped is beacuse you need a GF equipped to use para-magic. Or draw it for that matter.

16
Its a huge plot point that the only humans who can use magic are sorceress and people who have junctioned GFs which allow them to use para-magic, and the only people who do that are SEEDs.

Yet every Galbadian soldier clearly can use para-magic as well even without any GFs equipped.

This reminds me of when i was playing FF6 and at one point in the game, your party members freak out over the main girl using magic because "omg nobody can use magic", but the weird thing is, for the entire game up till that point, you have been using magic in battle and nobody cared...

17
Maybe the original intent was for Zack to have met Shinra? Does that ever happen in Crisis Core?

18
Depending on the weapons, yes, some do increase your magic, but theres no need to worry about that till the raid on junon because everything before that dies in 1 spell, so you may as well take advantage of the double AP growth weapons.

I forgot to add that part of the problem is that the difficulty level wasnt consistent. In many areas of the game, later enemies are easier than earlier ones. The soldier 2nd class at Junon are harder to kill than any non-scripted fight till you get to the underwater reactor for example, and a good portion of the underwater reactor enemies were easier than soldier 2nd class.

19
I've never played Crisis Core, but doesnt that make 1st class SOLDIERs to be super famous? Cloud at this point has his memories merged with some of Zack's so he could be expecting to be remembered. If Zack ever met President Shinra and mentioned it to Cloud, that might explain it as well.

I remember the game being a LOT harder when I was a kid, then again i wasnt optimizing everything at that time.

This time round, i started using enemy skill materia and it basically makes lots of magic and summons obsolete. For example, there is no reason whatsoever to use the Ifrit summon when you can get the beta enemy skill as early as right after you obtain the buggy (this assumes you dont grind like crazy to survive the midgar zolom right after leaving midgar). All you have to do is use big guard, laser it twice, and wait till he uses the skill, then kill him with one spell or summon after. It costs 35 MP and does more than twice the damage of the Ifrit summon. It also does either the same or more damage as a single target fire 3 spell.

Since most enemies have no elemental resistances/weaknesses, you can easily use beta to one shot almost any non-boss formation until the end of the whirlwind maze.

Trine has the same issue, for 20 mp it outdamages all other sources of lightning damage and allows you to one shot almost any non-boss formation till the end of the whirlwind maze.

The big guard skill also makes your party pretty much unkillable for obvious reasons (at least, for a large portion of the game), and invalidates three different support spells.

One thing i have to say though, its amazing how much more powerful magic is in general, especially if you are using the weaker double growth weapons to level up materia, since magic power isnt dependant on your weapon's attack power.

There was nothing wrong with my install, the converter just refused to run because it thought that i didnt have admin access, when i did. And when i did get it to run, it wouldnt play music until i manually installed the aali driver thing, and the converter reported no errors.

Did you see the headless barret screenshot i posted?

Can you at least post up the download links so that i can download them directly then import them into 7th heaven?

Please clarify what the issue is with the "wrong" internal resolution.

What does the numpad keyboard patch do exactly? It is not explained in the 7th heaven tutorial. I have a numpad, but obviously i dont want the game to be switching to the default controls in the naming screen instead of using my customized controls.

Can you please update the tutorial as well to include the stuff i mentioned?

Why cant i increase the fort condor mini game speed? What exactly are the keys required to do that?

It would be great if you could answer the questions in detail. 2 lines does not give me a lot to work with.

Well at that point, Cloud had his memories jumbled up and his SOLDIER memories were from what Zack said. Since Zack knows President Shinra, Cloud "knew" him too which is why he said that line.

Probably the best explanation was that President Shinra assumed that Cloud was ex-soldier based on his eyes and maybe whatever info he got about AVALANCHE. Or maybe its a remnant of an early script.

President Shinra assuming that Cloud is Zack wouldnt make sense because Zack was used as an experiment before being killed (which again doesnt make sense because if first class was so rare and valuable, Hojo wouldnt have been allowed to do that) and never "quit".

Theres one continuity error though, in the original FF7 game, SOLDIER first class wasn't as big of a deal as the other games like Crisis Core made them out to be, where 1st class is incredibly rare and everyone knows them by sight/name. Cloud claiming to be ex-first class would have fallen apart really quickly if first class was that famous because nobody would know who he was and Tifa would have wanted to look up info on Cloud (which would have been really easy if first class was as famous as Crisis Core made them out to be).

If you enable the skip cutscenes option and skip the mandatory gondola cutscene during the gold saucer date, the outside of the gondola will be black. After saying a few lines, your date will then sit there and do nothing. Cloud will be completely unable to move or do anything and you will need to restart. You can skip the non-mandatory cutscenes if you wish though (the ones that you view when looking out of the window). The mandatory one has Cloud automatically look out of the window even if you dont touch the controls.

The save anywhere feature also breaks certain scenes where the party splits up. This can range from minor (e.g. after arriving in costa del sol, the party splits up and you can talk to them in town, if you use the PBS to put them in your party again, they all vanish from town and you miss the chance to talk to them) to game breaking (first time in gold saucer, when barret leaves and the rest are in the terminal, if you put the party members back in your party and talk to one of them, the other party members can get stuck on the stationery party member when exiting cloud's body).

Also, when you are rescueing Aeris from the Shinra building and need to sneak ast the soldiers guarding one of the floors, if you save during the "sneak past the guards" segment, cloud will be visible but tifa and barret will not be visible. They are still there and you can still get them to sneak past the guards, but since they are invisible its difficult to time their movements and signal them. They can still get caught by the guards in which case it will trigger a battle like normal.

Saving in the middle of the nibelheim flashback also causes you to get what is probably a corrupted save as the only party member listed will be cid and the save's location will be displayed as gibberish.

(not due to the game tweaks mod, but just thought i would put this here just in case)

If you use a save game editor or glitch to have Aeris in your party after the temple of the ancients, certain scenes will break because the game tries to play a scene for each party member, but doesnt know what to do when it finds Aeris. After the fight with JENOVA-LIFE, if you have Aeris in your party, she wont be visible as a party member, it will just be Cloud and your 3rd party member standing there. The scene then breaks because each party member is supposed to have a unique reaction at this point but the game doesnt know what to do with the Aeris party member. You will be frozen and unable to do anything except reload and replace Aeris with someone else for this battle.

At the sector 5 reactor, president shinra recognises cloud, which should be impossible given that cloud was never in SOLDIER and was just a nameless infantryman. And nothing in the game suggests that Cloud had specifically let Shinra know he was ex-soldier and joined up with avalanche.

Not sure if related to the naming screen key config problem, but i am unable to change the speed of the fort condor minigame. According to guides on the net, either the page up/down or page up/down + target/camera keys were supposed to change the speed, but no matter what i tried, the minigame speed stays at 4 bars.
