FF8 Tools / Re: [RELEASE] IFRIT - FFVIII Enemy editor 0.10

Yeah, expulsion is used by Degenerator and Rapture.  As far as I can tell, the game always uses base status defense (100) for Vit0.

Good work.  It's nice to see that you are still working on this.

A couple things.  What you have listed status resistance for Vit0 is actually Expulsion.  Also, the unknown byte under abilities is for the animation from section 3 that is used when launching the attack (magic and items always use 0B).

Colly, have you done any AI or enemy ability modifications for version 3?  I ask because I have been working on an AI mod (also tweaking what abilities some monsters can use), however if you have already done it for version 3 then perhaps I'll start working on something else.

Troubleshooting / Re: How to play ff8 in windows mode
« on: 2011-06-25 06:18:59 »
To tell the truth I'm not sure if you need the FF7 files or not, but I copy all of the files into the FF8 directory.  Then I open the ff8_opengl configuration file and change the fullscreen option from yes to no, save the file, and play.

Did you check the wiki?  It has a decent amount of information on the DAT files.  Is there anything specific you're looking for?  I've only been working on section 7 and 8.

31
Open Battle.fs with FF8AC (Archive Commander) and extract the c0mXXX.dat files.  Each c0mXXX.dat file contains 11 Sections of information on a specific enemy (except c0m127.dat, which only has 2 sections), for instance c0m028.dat holds the information on the Bite Bug.

People probably already know this, but I haven’t seen a list anywhere, so I thought I’d throw it out there.  In section 7 for altering monster abilities you need to know three things:  the byte for the type of ability, the byte for the type of animation, and the byte or bytes for the specific ability.

Sorry for the long post, but hopefully someone finds it useful.

Thanks!  Amazing!  Wonderful work!  That covered pretty much everything I was looking for and then some.  I need to take a few days and test all this information to make sure that I understand it correctly, but I'll probably have a few questions.  For now, though, I have two questions.  One, do you have any idea what the status byte for "death" is (probably not all that necessary with FF8's targeting system, but it was essential for FF6)?  Two, have you found the target byte for "last enemy that attacked" (mainly for use with controlled counterattacks)?

Thanks again for all the information!

Edit:  The target byte for "last enemy that attacked" is CB (I'm fairly certain, but I haven't tested it extensively).

I apologize.  The question was mostly posed to you, but I thought it best to phrase it in a more general sense.  No offense intended.  Actually, your the only person I know of who is knowledgeable about FF8's battle scripts (others have likely done work on it too, I'm just unaware of it).  I'm new to working on FF8's AI, most of my AI work has been on FF6, which is far more simplistic.  As of now, the only thing I can do reliable is change targeting.  That said, any information on section 8 would be useful, but mostly I'm looking for some basics.

Does anyone have any information on section 8?

Yeah it isn't really all that tough, I was just caught off guard with Ifrit.
I've been playing the Extreme version and just finished beating diablos and I'm getting ready to head for Timber. So far it feels like regular enemies do roughly 3x the damage, which isn't a problem. Bosses are tanks. They have a lot of Vitality and Spirit, and some strong attacks. However, overall they aren't that difficult. A little preparation and a decent strategy and you should win. Granted this is in regards to the early game. I fully expect some nasty stuff to crop up later in the game. And I look forward to it.

This morning I sat down to do something which I have been looking forward to for a good long while - playing a hard mod of FFVIII. So how was it? I'd have to say that it was quite a lot of fun...and I was killed by Ifrit. Yes, Ifrit. I was stunned, dumbfounded, I had been caught completely off guard. He said 'Impudent humans' and then (for the first time) he backed it up. And Squall died. It was sad. However, thankfully he wasn't alone for long, as Quistis soon joined him in the netherworld.

Ifrit - Round 2

This time I was prepared. This time I wasn't expecting him to be a pushover. This time I would win.
Squall died.
Right away.
Once again.
Sad.
You'd think I would have thought to bring along a phoenix down or two, but no... Anyways, picture this - Quistis, standing alone, dwarfed by the fiery demon with no hope for survival, and yet, miraculously, a mere ten minutes later the soon-to-be-not-Instructor Trepes stood victorious over the dastardly foe.

Well, anyways, I had fun. Great work!
