Title: Poor uptime
Post by: Qhimm on 2002-08-11 11:32:56
As many of you are probably aware by now, the current host for this site has gotten to be rather unreliable. Unexplained downtime of several hours at a time, often several times a week! And now this latest downtime of 24+ hours where the DNS server suddenly failed, rendering qhimm.com inaccessible.

As a result, I've begun to look into other hosts that offer the same features at roughly the same price. I've found one or two, however these are a bit more expensive than my current hosting. Hence this poll. Please participate in full honesty.

Sorry Qhimm, no $$ from this poor Russian.   -_-

If you can find a new host cheap enough (about the same or maybe slightly more than your current one) then I would say switch.  I am willing to donate a little a month if necessary, but the current problems aren't really enough to bother me.

Herr Qhimm, I agree with Aaron, if money is an issue I would pay.  I have never noticed the problems...

Well, I think it's not that tragic that the server's unavailable sometimes. And a server change doesn't mean automatically improvement. Probably even payable hosts are sometimes unavailable. I don't care 'bout the problems - I think we can live w/o that board for 24 hours ... ;)

Yeah, I imagine I'm the one who sees this most seriously, since I'm the one paying    And I've gotten tired of having the site (and all things associated with it, like my mail account) unusable this often. Maybe the smartest thing to do is change hosts every year, to make sure you're with the best. Anyway, it looks like I'll be going with this other host I've found, they provide almost the same features but have a better reputation at it.

Here's more on the new deal, anyway:
- Web space: 50% more (meaning I can disable auto-pruning of Unrelated)
- Bandwidth limit: unchanged at 10GB / month (the site & forums so far haven't climbed above 2GB / month)
- No dedicated IP, so the site will be completely dependent on the domain name for accessing  :(
- Speed: unknown, but should be at least as good as current
- Uptime: definite improvement over current

Oh, and I haven't decided on anything yet. It just looks very tempting to go this way, especially since right now I'm paying a lot of money for little service...

Hmm.. I didn't even see it that way. That's true, your paying for service and they aren't giving you the right service!
Burn them! err...i mean kill them!
err....yea...change hosts....then kill them

This sounds like it's sure we'll have an improvement ... hm ... probably better change the host? Hm, dunno. It's up to you...

Hmm, seems the new host's speed is of a more important concern than I tought... To be precise, they're less than half as fast as the current.

Out of curiousity, how does the new host's price compare to the current?

As for speed, I've never had any problems with this board being slow, so, it might not matter that much.

Really, there are never more than like 10 people viewing the boards at once, but usually it's like three or four or less.  And I know there's the web site, and I have no idea how much traffic it gets, but I think it won't be the end of the world if the board slows down some.

In total there is 1 user online :: 1 Registered, 0 Hidden and 0 Guests   [ Administrator ]   [ Moderator ]
Most users ever online was 14 on 2002-08-01 17:33
Registered Users: ShinRa Inc

90% of the time I'm here, it's less than 4 total online.  And also, I've never had a problem with speed....Unless you count all the times the Server goes down as I'm writing a post....and then I hit send, and it gets lost.... ;-;

Herr Qhimm, I never notice being slow because... well... um... on THIS modem there is NO SUCH THING as a slow site or a fast site.  They are ALL slow!  Though there are sites that don't respond.

One does also have to take into account the d/l's on Qhimm's site.

Nah, 24 hours is OK to me. I've realised this problem as well, but I don't really care much.
Speed? No problem; infact I'm downloading your site faster than any other websites.

Any other problems? Umm no.... not really. I think this host is ok at the moment.... but again Qhimm, you own this site, it's your choice which host you want to choose. Us users can only give opinions.......  :wicked:

Edit  - er yeah, Jari made a good point on the user demanding better reliability. I mean, you are offering services/ helps to the FF community for free, and believe me you can't find any better FF programmers in any other sites.  :)

Qhimm: When I said improvement, I wanted to point out at thwe storage. I think it would be fine to have a non-self-destructing Off-Topic-Forum ... as for me, I don't case 'bout the server speed, as far as it's not a 56K server :D

I wasn't refering to Qhimm's post.
I was refering to Shinra and Aaron's posts.

Yeah, I did say that I don't know how much bandwidth is used by Qhimm's actual site.  Perhaps he could enlighten us?

The decision has been taken to remain with this host. Partly because it's cheaper, and partly because the problems are expected to subside as they're upgrading the entire hosting service. And if it somehow shouldn't, there's still plenty of time left before this account needs renewal.

Yeah, it does seem pretty stable now.  Now, if only my dad would disable the autonomus SpamTRAP function on my e-mail account so I can actually get the email notifications again......

Does it not allow you to program "exceptions" into the Spam thing which will allow all E-mails from this board?

Post by: Goku7 on 2002-09-03 20:35:31
According to my dad, he hasn't seen anything of that sort.  It seems to be totally autonomus (spelling?).  However, seeing as though I've got some more notifications today, my dad may have moved the wrongly-trapped stuff to my inbox, or he finally decided to disable it.

Now, why can't I do that myself?  Simple.  Dad decided that in the name of making sure I'm not getting anything nasty (and thank God I haven't gotten anything nasty so far), he changed the e-mail server password, so I don't know what he picked.  All I know is that he configured Outlook Express to use the correct passward, so I can still see my inbox, I just can't access it via a web browser, and therefore can't even set my own options.

If you wanna find out what the password is then use this program to reveal the pasword 8)

It's a very handy little utility.

Except when my dad notices that I've been changing options around he's not gonna be too happy with me.  I'll have to forgo using that.  Besides, I think he did finally disable the SpamTRAP feature.

You're new... you might like to know that its kind of annoying when a two-month-old thread is brought back to the top of the list by a reply... usually we let the old threads die.

Just a thought.
