FF8 Mods
« on: 2009-08-10 19:53:31 »
Hello.

I've searched everywhere but I can't find any mods for FF8, no I don't mean crappy little graphical enhancements or patches, I mean REAL mods, like character mods, weapon mods, spell mods, monster mods, or even nifty tools like a text editor (I already have Griever BTW)

So can anyone help me?

I made an enemy editor if that helps.

I would very much like to edit the magics in FF8 too. Just need to find out what to alter in the files.

"crappy little graphical enhancements or patches"

FF8 modding is still in it's infancy. If you've got any technical skills, why not try to develop something of your own? A "real" mod....
I don't believe anybody's yet cracked the file encoding for FF8 character models, though Makubex proved that it's somewhat similar to that of FF7's since biturn managed to convert .mch files semi-well into .3ds

You want to know how the .mch format works? Sounds like fun. See you in a couple of hours. :-P

I'm not sure about this.  I know a few years back Qhimm and some others discovered how to crack the .mch, so Mirex added support for it in Biturn.  That doesn't necessarily mean they are similar.

Some work was done on FF8 field models relatively recently. It's stopped for the moment, since koral left.

Seems like a lot about the FF8 model formats is already known, just waiting for someone to tie it all together and make a proper editor/import/export tool.

And that seems to be the very group of people we've lost almost all access to here at qhimm by this point.

Anyone can help investigate and once in a while find some fluke that helps out... but programming isn't one of those things that you can just luck out and suddenly just "get" a working model editor or whatever...

Essentially anyone can start drawing and maybe end up with amazing art... but not everyone can do anything with it....

Lol, thanks gjoerulv, I appreciate it.

I did not think there would be so little mods for this game, real mods. And if I had even a slightest hint of how to mod, I would. But I'd be willing to learn and/or collaborate with people (I.E give knowledgeable folks some ideas etc).
