General Discussion / Final Fantasy 7 Online
« on: 2003-02-14 06:48:47 »
MMORPGs are a pain in the ass to make.  Not only will you have to worry about getting it to work, but you will have to make constant (everyday almost) changes and bug fixes.  Not only that, but you need to also make it as secure as possible, and making code unexploitable is a tough job to do, you get lost while going through 1 Million lines of code.  Then there is the server maintance, and the constant DoS attacks or brute force hacking.

Then also, you need to expand it, cuz then you'll lose customers because they will get bored with the same old thing.  Expanding it will mean you have to code more, have more bugs, have more people abusing it, then people who abuse it will have an advantage over those who don't abuse it, and it becomes a real mess.  Play an MMORPG first and you'll see how tough it is.  This may not happen much in countries like in Korea or Japan, because people play by the rules and don't try to exploit bugs.  Here in the U.S. is a different subject, most people that have been rude and jerks were people from the U.S.

Versions of the MMORPG that are in Korea and Japan don't have constant hack attacks as the version for the U.S.  It really makes you wonder if the american culture is really rotten (No offense to people that live in the U.S., but it's frankly the truth)

I know that's the way you use them with other classes, but I've never used mfc classes and I though objects were handled differently.  And since I'm doing the program with dialogs, I guess I would have the need to use the mfc classes.  Thanks for advice though.

53
LOL, Oh man, I can't believe it's that easy, I feel dumb.  Well, I kinda worked around that problem in a lame way.  Since the only thing I was able to pass was char strings, I kinda make check statements for each string.

Well, one error I had got was during the linking process that array[3][4][5][6] was defined in another object.  But I figured that one fast though, I remembered I had defined it somewhere else and so I went and deleted those definitions in the other cpp file.

The other error I kept getting was that I was trying to send variables to a non-mfc class (one not created by classwizard), but with the example you gave me, I see there is no need for me to create another class.

Well, I'm almost done with the project, I launched myself at doing the program using mcf instead of just console having the chance of failing, even more without knowing anything about programming using the mfc classes.  Well, thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

54
Well, I'm a noob when it comes to MFC.  I just starting programming with MFC a couple of weeks ago, and there are still many things I don't know.

Here is my problem.

I'm trying to pass int and double variables from dialog to dialogs, and every time I try to make a non-mfc class I keep getting errors.  So far I know how to pass strings from one dialog to another dialog, but I need to pass variables.  I was also thinking of using pointers to pass the variables, but I still kept getting other errors.  If you guys can give me a code example, that would be truly appreciated.  My head hurts, and I'm running out of time.  I've been able to solve many of the obstacles I've had coding the program, but unfortunately I haven't found any tuturials for this next problem.

So if you guys can help me, and spare me some sanity, it will really help.  Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / I need some help with ff7....
« on: 2003-01-18 22:49:19 »
I know we've had this discussion before but, does the CD-Doctor work?

I mean, I have tons of games and music cds that are scratched or stained or with mean stuff that doesn't come off.  My FF7 for PC cds are very damaged (scratches and stains only), fortunately they are not cracked.    So I know a friend that has that CD-Doctor thing, but I'm kind of skeptical about it.

56
Oh yeah, now I remember using PEC instead of that cheat option in ePSXe.  There weren't many cheat options for FFT in PEC last time I tried it though.

Not me, I'm already getting my fill of RO.

BTW, if you are new to MMORPGs and want to try them out.  DON"T EVER PLAY EVERQUEST.  That game is crap, and the people who run them are a bunch of assholes.

58
Your friend is using a psx emulator.  ePSXe has an integrated "game shark" like tool.

Well, there are about 50 tracks for the music.  Each about the same size.  Some are awesome like the ones I uploade, some are so so, mellow or for the mood.  Some are dull.  But other than that, it's one of the best music I have ever heard in an MMORPG.  I would have to say the whole music zipped would be around 200 MB.  The game alone is around 500 MB, along with patches.  But I think you can request a CD to be sent to your address.

Edit: I decided to take down the mp3s for later and add a video clip.

Sorry for the crap ass quality of the video.  That's the lowest I could go to save space.  Well, I could make it with better quality and less space but, for right now this is a quicky.

Assassin chick;

http://home1.gte.net/res0uixt/ro/assassinfemale.avi

used DivX 5.0 to make it.  I'll try and make small better quality files later.

and other mp3s:

Oh don't worry, it'll be years before RO ends, plus you might join when the 3rd class jobs are implemented in the game, something that even in the korean version is still to come.  Honestly, I don't think FFXI will last a long time.  I just didn't find it interesting, plus the gameplay is boring.  Not much action in FFXI, but whatever floats your boat.  For final fantasy games, I'm just going to stick to the non-online versions, since story is what makes those games.

Edit:  Oh yeah BTW, Ged, I just found out that the registration was opened for one more week, but it's going to close this Jan 13th.  The fee is $10 for server maintance and other stuff.  It would be kinda high for you since there is only 1 more month of Closed Beta, plus it's a beta (it still has some bugs).  Once closed beta is over it will go pay to play.

61
Sweet, I was kinda thinking that it may be too much for the time period that we have for the project, but I'll give it a try anyways.  I know flash isn't a GUI, I meant it as to say instead of using the usual MFC I'd use flash to make the buttons and stuff.  Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try this weekend.  If there anyone that could give more tips about it, it would be appreciated.

If you download it, you can check out the music.  The music is pretty good.

Oh yeah, did I mention it was anime style sprites mixed with 3D graphics, good combination I must say.  I'll post a pic once I play today.

Edit:

Here are some screenshots:

Sorry, buddy, you'll have to wait until February to play RO.  It went to Closed Beta and the registration is closed now.  You can still see some pics and clips of the game.

Well, not really expert, but here is my problem.

My project team is doing a C++ program to sell concert tickets for an ATM type machine (except we wont deal with the hardware).  The problem is not the C++ coding, since we have it pretty much figured out.  The thing is, I want to use a Flash GUI for the program.  I want to know if there is any API or how to include an SWF file into the program.  I know how to use Flash, and know how to code in C++, but I'm ubersome stupid in going more than that. plz help, plz heal, 555

Mmm, haven't been here in quite a while again.  Yeah, you are going to have a tuff time going throught that playonline thing.  It's a bunch of stuff you have to go through just to login to FFXI.  You can always try to make Japanese friends and invite them to play FFXI.

Then again, I'm not interested in FFXI.  Ragnarok Online is too adictive for me to go to another MMORPG.  Plus it's far more popular in Korea and Japan than FFXI.  O_O Must level to level 60 Knight @_@, must kill Baphomet and Doppleganger.

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / mmmmm -_-
« on: 2002-08-26 13:58:24 »
Well, this has been known for a while, and I'm sure some of you have known about this.  It's about MS IE hidden (very hidden) files.  Read:

http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml

Like it says, you have to see to believe.  I couldn't believe how much shit was hidden in those files.  Fuck, and I thought I was downloading too much porn and running out of space.  The files that I was able to delete amounted to almost a whoping 1 GB.  There are more hidden files, and these are the files known primarily in 5.0 but not limited to the other versions.  This makes me wonder, should I get another browser like Opera or NetScape?  Duh!!!!!

Why the hell do they do that?

Edit:  On a side note.  One thing I have also noted about the Microsoft Hotmail, is that it seems that it's letting the mailboxes be flooded with SPAM.  Also, I saw 2 pop up windows come out as soon as I logged in.  Yahoo uses Anti-Spam software, Microsoft is the one with the big bucks.  Is this a move to have all free users be driven out because they want to keep only the people who pay?  I can only see in the near future, that Microsoft will kick out all free users by force if they don't want to pay.

Mmm, I'm good in script writing.

Qhimm:  I'm afraid we have to ban you vvalentine.

Vvalentine:  WHAT?!?!? *with a surprised and sad look* But, but, why?!?!

Qhimm:  *turning his back to vv*  You haven't been posting here lately, and I know you are posting in other forums as well.

Vvalentine:  *with a confused look*  Is that a reason to ban me?

Qhimm:  Yeah.

Vvalentine:  *with a grin of fear in his face* I don't see that as a reason to be banned.  That's just ridiculous!!!! *frowns his eyebrows*

Qhimm:  Well, I said so, kthxbye. *clicks on ban button*

Vvalentine: NOOOOOOOOOOOoooooohh. *vvalentine now sits in front of his computer, watching the screen and reading the ban message over and over*

Nah, Qhimm is not evil (or is he? O_o).  That's just an example of some script writing that I can do.  Of course, I can do much much better.  This just barely took me a minute to do it, and it all came as I typed it.

General Discussion / FFXI offline? o_O
« on: 2002-08-15 02:54:30 »
Well, I heard from someone (name to remain unannymous) that FFXI will be also offline, meaning that you can play online and offline.  Supossedly FFXI will be delayed until Feb of 2003 because of this, and that the PC and PS2 versions will come out in the same time.  I trust the information that this friend gives me, but this really sounds like a big rumor.  Anyone knows something about this?

Well, I know the whole story of FF7, and I have posted my ideas about some FF7 events and characters, especially Vincent Valentine.  I would like to help, but I'm still not sure about my schedule (actually, I'm lazy).  But I may just get off my butt, and do something good for a change.  I'll contact you sometime.

I have to agree with Qhimm and Shinra Inc. about americans.  I don't mean all americans, since some are not that stupid.  But the majority of the americans are just too materialistic, and have that sense of being "better than anyone else" type of attitude.

And I too hate SUVs, and anyone who uses an SUV for themselves just to go to school and/or work should be shot to death for being idiots.

The mentallity of an american is that they think that the bigger the better.  If you don't look big, then you are considered a weakling.  They look at things very superficially, and this I am sure will lead to a downfall of this country.  I will like to see what will happen when all the young idiots that are failing school get outside in the real world, I wonder if some will become leaders O_O.

I'm not racist or anything like that, but americans are fools for an audience.  So far, they have been the most whining, arrogant, stupid, selfish, disrespectful, and many other things.

Alice, you must play FF7.  Repeat with me, "I must play FF7".  It's the best FF game IMO.  Good story, good character development, good music, and the graphics aren't bad either, plus the gameplay.

However, like Ultima said, I have had trouble finding FF7 for PC too.  Only the playstation game.  My own copy is so scratched, I want to buy a new copy, but I guess I'll have it polished.

Why do all of a sudden was reminded about Joey?  Nevermind that.
Anyways, did Joey left for good? or is he still around?

If you set up a wireless network correctly, you haven't got a problem. Brute force hacking still takes /ages/, especially if your system is set up correctly to, say, restrict connections to one attempt per second; at that rate, it'd take centuries or more to brute force hack it...

Yeah, that's true.  It really does depend on how the network is setup.  However, some administrators don't seem to know about that.  Where I used to work, they had a mixed network.  One day, they got hacked, but fortunately for them they didn't have access to other computers (at least that's how it seemed).  They have an AS/400 (where all the accounts information is located) and it's protected by two routers and a firewall.  One of the managers was blaming us that one of us (trainers) may have given out the password.  The weird thing was that they only left traces that an attack (and intrusion) occured, but no trace of who did it and from where.  I don't have info of what logs they had.

There are lots of devices that can be tweaked to intercept the frequencies of wireless connections.  Brute force hacking is probable easiest in a wireless network.  Firewalls and Routers would simply be somehow useless.

I don't like wireless.  It's not as secure as a wired network.  Shees, I wouldn't even think of using wireless here in my apartment.  Psshhh, WEP is like a joke and RSA can kiss my a$$.
