Title: Places where you can buy FF7 **legally**
Post by: titeguy3 on 2010-02-13 18:13:07
Update - You can buy the 2012 FF7 rerelease at one of these links:

Steam (Recommended, no SecuROM) (http://store.steampowered.com/app/39140/)
North America (http://store.na.square-enix.com/store/sqenixus/en_US/pd/productID.250845500/categoryId.57606100/parentCategoryID.16256100) (seriously, don't buy this version unless you like excessive DRM, install limits, and worse support. Get it on Steam instead)
Europe (https://store.eu.square-enix.com/emea_europe/pc-windows-download/FINAL-FANTASY-VII.php)
(same as above)

Okay, this is getting old, so to all new FF7 aficionados here on Qhimm, rather than trying to pirate a copy of FF7 only to end up with a difficult to mod/patch/get to work "Ultima edition", I've taken a few minutes out of my day to compile a list of places where you can buy FF7PC.

Although you can still find the PSX version of the game as a "Greatest Hits" PS1 game (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Final+Fantasy+VII&oe=utf-8&hl=en&cid=13088897064951579762&sa=title#p) or via the playstation network (http://www.us.playstation.com/PSone/Games/Final_Fantasy_VII), Squaresoft no longer distributes the game for PC, so the only way you can grab FF7PC is typically secondhand at places like the following:

Ebay (http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=Final+Fantasy+VII+PC+-Crisis+-Core+-Dirge+-Cerberus+-Advent+-Children+-Strategy+-Guide+-Demo&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&LH_BIN=1&_sop=12&LH_IncludeSIF=1&_dmd=1&_odkw=Final+Fantasy+VII+PC+-Crisis+-Core+-Dirge+-Cerberus+-Advent+-Children+-Strategy+-Guide&_osacat=0) (click the link, and I've already got an optimized search of 200 buy-it-now listings)
Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00000DMAA/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&qid=1266087152&sr=8-1&condition=used) has some more reliable vendors, but the prices may be a little higher than on eBay. Just remember, you get what you pay for.
Magisterrex (http://www.magisterrex.com/proddetail.asp?prod=WEBIJC164) has a European version of the game for sale, if anyone's interested. I haven't personally confirmed that the mods here work with that version, but I don't see why they wouldn't.

Other versions that are confirmed to work with mods:
*Platinum Edition or "EA Ultimate Hits" version, characterized by a blue square box and blue discs.

Other versions that are unconfirmed to work with mods:
*International Edition, characterized by light blue discs, with an extra bonus disc.

Still unsure which version you have? Look here (http://www.mobygames.com/game/final-fantasy-vii/cover-art).

Keep an eye out for sources selling illegitimately made "boot-leg" copies of the game, however.

Don't bother looking for abandonware copies of the game, as until Square-enix disintegrates, the game isn't abandonware. Any website that claims it as such is just masking piracy. Also, try to stick to the classic triangle-case (http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2319/bi3wiqwkkgrhgohcuejlllv.jpg) version with the trifold cardboard paper disc case (http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/2818/c62212.jpg) inside. If you see the triangle case, you know you're getting the right one, others can be demos or international editions of the game that might not be compatible with the mods here.

Remember that as soon as you get a working copy of the original game (legally), it's a good idea to make a backup of your discs, as the original discs can be old and scratched and not have much time left in terms of functionality.

I'll post other sites that I deem trustworthy as I find them, but feel free to post a place that you've found a legit copy of FF7PC for sale, or post a listing if you want to sell yours.

Third'd. I think it's important to have another sticky for noobs to ignore.

edit: That was supposed to be the rolleyes smiley, two colons then a parenthesis. I clicked the icon and it broke it. The rolleyes smiley is on the list twice though, and the second one works just fine.

I've found a couple of websites that claim to vend new copies of the game for insane prices, one of them even has the nerve to post a video of an install with Dziugo's 9999 limit breaker and custom avatars (http://www.magisterrex.com/proddetail.asp?prod=WEBIPC192).

I wouldn't trust these sites one bit, as you'll probably spend upwards of $100 on a pirated version of the game.

Don't bother looking for abandonware copies of the game, as until Square-enix disintegrates, the game isn't abandonware. Any website that claims it as such is just masking piracy. Also, try to stick to the classic triangle-case (http://img.inkfrog.com/pix/magisterrex/FinalFantasy7PCFront.jpg) version with the trifold cardboard paper disc case (http://i15.ebayimg.com/07/i/001/91/c6/c622_12.JPG) inside. I have sold on both eBay and Amazon, as well as magisterrex.com, since 2002. Thousands of retro games have managed to make their way from my sites to customers all over the world, and my list of repeat customers is quite long.  So you can imagine that I was sorry to read that you have placed my retro gaming site into the group of places wherein you wouldn't "trust them one bit."

As for nerve, I took a look at the video that was placed within the listing, and I agree, it was not the right gameplay footage that I thought it was.  The listing was removed and relisted without the video.  A simple email would have been a pleasant, but a loud decree on a random message board will also work, I guess.  Hotlinking images is never a great idea, though, especially if you're disparaging someone's integrity at the same time. On the other hand, irony is one of the engines that keeps the Internets what they are.

Hope you don't take too much offense to my small rebuttal, as for the most part, I agree with what you have to say on software piracy.  Shady downloads laced with spyware and viruses are another favorite.  Good luck in the search for the perfect copy of FF7 for PC!

I was hoping you'd apply to the forums and respond to my suspicions. Welcome to the forums   :).

I was indeed wondering whether or not yours was a trusted source, however, the art on the discs displayed on your page aren't the original black ones officially released by Square, and I'm aware that there are multiple versions, but I'd never seen a silver disc in a triangle box before, which raised suspicions, and the video didn't exactly help.

Thank you for taking the time to validate your business on our humble forums, and I'll amend my post as is appropriate. If you are in fact vending legitimately obtained copies of Final Fantasy VII, then I apologize for any offense I may have caused.

I took the whole listing down to have another look at the CDs. I think you're right; the box doesn't match the CDs and their case. Once I figure out what version it is, I'll put the listing back up with whatever corrections are needed.  Thanks for telling me about the problem!

More information:

1. There is only ONE (1) Final Fantasy VII game for sale at magisterrex.com.  If someone is out there saying they have quantity of this game, then I would put my wallet away and buy somewhere else.

2. I've checked the Installation CD and it has the code of MFIFAPEN00, which looks like the United Kingdom version of this game.  I don't know if the game was released in Canada (go Canada!) separately or they simply shipped the UK version here.  Usually the writing style is radically different between US and UK releases (different spelling and word usage), but this one's case and game manual read as American.

3. Speaking of the game manual, it is contained on the installation disc.

4. Not sure if it's important, but if you look at the Setup file, it reads as version 1.0.0.1.

If anyone needs me to have a quick look at the discs for specific files, drop me an email.

The platinum edition is, AFAIK, identical to the regular edition as far as what's on the disc. Only the labels and packaging are different.

Obviously I'm a newbie here, so please be gentle to me and my non-existent post-count.

I bought the cardboard-triangle-abomination that contained FF7 for pc like 11 years ago.  My pc disks are now scratched beyond repair.  is there a technical difference in using a cd-r backup i have of my disks?  I did it way back before i even knew what an image file was.

in lieu of that, does anyone know of a trading-post or the like where i might find the game for cheaper than ebay/amazon?  I'm looking for like 30 bucks-ish.

I also found a version on a UK website, but I don't know how/if at all that will affect modding.

Any ideas?

If you've made backups of your discs, you should be able to use those to run the game just fine. I recommend making ISO's out of your backup discs by mounting them with a program like Daemon Tools since CD's tend to get old and not work so well. There's no technical difference between using the actual discs and using backups.

Also to answer your last question, so far, I haven't heard of any cases of having the UK version getting in the way of modding, although that's not to say that it wouldn't

This is probably one of the few topics that I think should be exempt from necroposting rules. Handing out warnings for people looking to legitimately purchase the game seems counter productive to me.

Stickies are exempt from necroposting since they are deemed important enough to always be at the top of forums.

sorry i missed that in the "new rules post" it just says about posting in more then one month old
Quote from: new rules
The only exceptions to this are people that release programs have a new version to release, or if there is some new information directly related to the topic at hand
i was going by that.

It's not in the rules, but it makes sense.   If a topic is THAT important seems to me posting in it should always be ok.
Title: Re: Places where you can buy FF7 **legally**
Post by: Bosola on 2010-08-16 18:31:55
I've always said that necroposting is quite acceptable on a knowledge-base / technical forum. Questions about operating environments and engines always remain relevant. A double-posting rule would be enough to stop newbies bumping their technical questions.
Title: Re: Places where you can buy FF7 **legally**

thanks for the info, guys.  i figured this would be a safe post because the topic remains relevant and it seemed wildly redundant to make a new thread when there was a sticky that so nicely summed up the topic.

so, using an iso image doesn't affect anything like moving crucial memory addresses or pointers?  i want to play it safe because i know what a b**** it is to debug that kind of stuff sometimes.
Title: Re: Places where you can buy FF7 **legally**
Post by: Kudistos Megistos on 2010-08-17 14:23:22
The game plays perfectly with the iso images. On a maximum install, most of the data it uses is on the hard drive anyway. The CDs are only used for the movies, and even they can be moved to the HDD with a bit of registry editing.
Title: Re: Places where you can buy FF7 **legally**
Post by: sl1982 on 2010-08-17 14:47:13
Nope, it should have no effect at all. Just make sure that you install the game from the same lettered drive you plan on mounting the iso's with. Or else you need to change registry settings to get it to work.
Title: Re: Places where you can buy FF7 **legally**
Post by: Bosola on 2010-08-17 18:32:06
...No. Why would it? An ISO is just an image of the disc + ECC and file partition.

I have a request for someone who in fact owns the platinum edition, and windows xp.

Please install the sy70xg, and see if it installs.

IF it installs, let me know if anything specia was needed ot do it.

If it installs, did it work.

If not, please download the microsoft update cab file (google it) update the driver to the one present inside of the cab file (use normal windows extraction methods) and let me know if that fixes it.

i know the one that comes with the non platinum one will NOT install on xp. you can run it in 98 compatibility mode, but it wont' realyl install, and the xgplayer program will NOT run.

This may be off topic, but I'm in a situation of two copies of FF7 lol. The first time, I got the discs (platinum) and it was in decent condition. I downloaded a pirate copy, BUT it's legal if you already own the product you're downloading. Same situation when I got the triangle-boxed version. I have it, and I keep it sealed along with my FFVII black edition for PS1. I downloaded a pirated copy again when I got that one, but here's my question. It IS legal to download roms and iso's of games if you own it... but what if you havent opened it!? :o

its not legal, why i can't really tell you. this would classicly be covered by "fair use"

this would be a dual violation of the DCMA, for you have 1. broken the copyright protection and 2.changed the format of the product... this also would have classicly been covered by "fair use"

Q: Is it legal to download a copy of a game I own?

A: No. Even if you own the original game, you are not entitled to download a copy of it. Copyright law clearly states that the only copy of software you are entitled to is the one you make yourself.

That's exactly what I thought when I posted on forums, and yet all I get is a warning and "read the rules" (here, I did get an answer... sorta)? DX

Anyway, back on the subject, I bought a FF7 from amazon, and it was of Like New quality. Turns out the disk was broken sometime in the Shipment and I sent it back for a refund. I never got the refund. I bought another one, but this time, the disk didn't read (It was Very Good Condition), and gave me an "Corrupt disk error". "Cannot Read Data. Insert a valid disk" or something like that. I wrote tec support, and they came to the conclusion that I had to replace my DVD-rom drive. I did, but it gave me the same faulty error. I tried to send back the Disc for a refund, but the disk was lost in shipment.

Are those used discs for real? All that is left is a 149 dollar "new" disk, and I'm afraid to lose money to another dead cd. :S

I was curious about the Amazon.com's sellers, so I checked. They are currently out of stock. :-( Link:

http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Pc/dp/B00000DMAA/ref=sr_1_2_title_0?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1340206250&sr=1-2&keywords=final+fantasy+vii

So then I checked eBay.com Link:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=final+fantasy+vii+pc&_sacat=0

There are 24 copies available in the United States of America. :-)

I prefer Amazon.com over eBay.com

Does it still use midi for the music, or have they stuck in a proper softsynth o a routin to use the original PSX music?

If so, i might buy this digital download.

They made a new music engine that plays OGGs...

and converted the midis to equally bad sounding OGGs. They screwed up, but at least it can be easily replaced.

well, +1 for the new music and graphics engines. so it plays looping ogg fiels now?

-2 for using the #$@$ GM midis as source.
+3 for ogg_files.zip :)

-1 for @#@% securerom and forced cloud save sync. Fortunaetly stripping the securerom out (not saying how) also removes the forced cloud sync.

Still, it's a good price, and probably the only version that works on modern cards and has proper sync.

it's up to version 1.0.7 now, btw. honestly square should grab the remastered music and use it. i don't think anyone here will mind. :)

Or they could convert the official OST or the PSX music to OGG. The ball's in their court.

Would be nice if someone has a universal promo code for the Square-Enix purchase...

Done.

Could people across the world check if it's available on Steam in their country? As far as I can tell, it's currently listed in the US, UK, Germany, Norway, Russia, and Brazil.

I've got you beat. I own FF7 on Steam, S-E Store, PSN, PC 1998, and PS1. That's a whole FIVE versions of the game, and every different version ever released in north america (not counting packaging variations, such as PC platinum edition and PS1 black label).

It's available in Sweden.

Could also mention that GMG (www.greenmangaming.com) is selling steam keys cheaper than on Steam itself. It's a very legit site.

Remember that as soon as you get a working copy of the original game (legally), it's a good idea to make a backup of your discs, as the original discs can be old and scratched and not have much time left in terms of functionality.

It's also a good idea to put the original disks back into the case and display it on your mantle as your crowning jewel!  Also remember to keep track of how old the disks are... some disk can Rot over time.  Some people say CD's will last over 100 years easy but on the safe side I think your window could be anywhere from 5 to 70 years. I have my "use" copies in a binder that I should probably replace soon...  Make a Backup to your backups to your backups....

I should really pick up a copy of this. My problem is that I have attempted to play FF7 like six times so the first 4-5 hours are mundane so I couldn't be bothered starting it again on PSN and always end up playing Xenogears or FF8...

Hope it's okay to post here, but I am wondering if it's helpful for those interested in playing the game in Japanese (or is that just obsessive lil' me?) that it's available through region-locked purchase on the Square-Enix Japan site (where surely all the same issues with the NA/EUR S-E versions apply) and, although presumably unmoddable*, certain (mostly Asian?) PS Store regions have access to the 2015 "FINAL FANTASY VII (English/Japanese Ver.)" for PS4 [JP0082-CUSA01330_00-ASIAFINALFANTASY] and 2009 "FINAL FANTASY VII INTERNATIONAL (Japanese Ver.)" for PS3/PSP (and, according to the label, PSV).

I am holding off for a sale on the PS4 version, which is more attractive for a number of reasons (bilingual release being a major one), but if anyone has experience with the 2015 PS4 release (even a NA/EUR version) I would appreciate the insight.

*I am aware of Mods for the PSX original, but I am assuming these PS Store versions are much harder to mod? If any exist, please enlighten.
