Title: FF7 Voice Audition Thread
Post by: Marc on 2011-04-30 16:46:20
Update : In order to have a more professionnal sounding mod, auditions have been moved to : http://voiceactingalliance.com/board/showthread.php?65840-Final-Fantasy-VII-FanDub-HD-**-CASTING-CALL-EPISODE-1-**.  Rules have also slightly been altered.  All are free to apply.

It's finally here, first part of the project!

WHAT IS FF7VOICE
FF7Voice is a patch to apply Voice-Overs in FF7. The patch works by intercepting the dialog calls of the game and playing the appropriate recorded line from the protected sound archive. The original concept of FF7Voice was suggested by FF7Heart and a proof of concept was put together by Ficedula and perfected by Dziugo.

THE SCRIPT
A full game script was produced for the game by Marc with the help of Tsetra, Revenile and Prince Lex.  Our recording will be based on that script and it contains every line by dialog ID and field location in the game as well as battle ID and movie name and timing.  DPLB also gave us the list of all of the world map text thanks to his retranslation project.  Recording will take place starting with major events of the game and working down from them in order of importance.

HOW WILL LINES BE RECORDED
A test will be held on the bombing mission to see if a group recording method is the best way to do things.  The bombing missions has a limited numbers of lines and characters so it should do for a good test under Mumble, a free group voice chat software that has good voice quality and allows for multicast recording.  Group recording comes with its own set of advantages/disadvantages, namely that all Voice Actors involved in a scene meet for a few hours all at the same time, and we want to test to see if it is a better way of doing things than recording individual lines on our own as is the norm.  Should this test fail, the recording process will be done in the standard way of recording lines each on our own with a set deadline and sending them in to the director for revisions/sound processing.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AUDITIONS
Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the line below as well as your contact info (name, e-mail, phone number) schedule and anything else you'd like to add.  If your schedule will change within the year, please state it and say how it will change as best as possible.  Deadline for initial round of auditions is May 13th at 23:59 PST so please hjave your files submitted by then.

Just got myself a pretty expensive condenser microphone with a pop shield, and I'm quite a recording enthusiast. I've got some proper studio equipment and software, so I may try out for a small part like Biggs or something. I'm probably not going to be able to do a group recording or anything though, since timezones will probably conflict etc.

Also I want to audition for some of the characters but right now I don't have my own computer. I am in the process of tyring to hasten my aquisition of a new PC just so I can be a part of this project  so please wish me luck :-D

Im still confused, do you just want some info or do you want actual sound files of the lines being read?

If you've sent an Audition, please send it again. Marc noted the wrong E-mail address. The E-mail is Aaron1984@Shaw.ca, not Shaw.com. Your auditions were not received.

Oops!

Edit :  I also realize I forgot to set a deadline.  Have your lines in by May 8th at 23:59 EST.  It is also recommended to record 3-4 takes per line.  Be mindfull of your recording quality.  Noises or a bad recording environment will reflect as badly upon your performance as a bad delivery.

I had asked Marc to email me when this project got started (see the thread I started in this forum). However, he never did. Could I still audition - I'd be interested in one or two of the minor roles. I'll also probably re-audition for Hojo, when and if he comes up.
Title: Re: FF7 Voice Audition Thread - Bombing Mission
Post by: Marc on 2011-05-18 20:53:47
I haven't e-mailed any of the old cast.

I also figured you'd like to apply for Hojo the most.

And yes, you may still send in auditions.  No decision has yet been taken.

Good thing the auditions -still- haven't been closed, as I -STILL- can't find my mic.  It's really starting to annoy me, I have a few other projects I wanna work on.

Post by: Marc on 2011-05-20 03:52:06
Because we haven't received many auditions and we want this to be a good quality project, the director has decided to put out a casting call to a voice acting community : http://voiceactingalliance.com/board/showthread.php?65840-Final-Fantasy-VII-FanDub-HD-**-CASTING-CALL-EPISODE-1-** (http://voiceactingalliance.com/board/showthread.php?65840-Final-Fantasy-VII-FanDub-HD-**-CASTING-CALL-EPISODE-1-**)

The actual audition process will be held through e-mails but will be directed from there.

More roles have also opened up and group recordings have been dropped as we felt it was a hindrance to receiving auditions.

All who wish to apply are welcome to!

And apart from anything else, Cloud is the opposite of dramatic and emotional. Quite the opposite, in fact; he seems to have schizoid personality disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizoid_personality_disorder) for most of the game.

I hate the way that Advent Children FF6 fanboys have influenced the way people think of Cloud.

That's the director's call.

However, from past experiences, Cloud was baddass and detached as he should be in the early parts of the game.

We're in the final 24h of the first audition and we still haven't received a good barret audition.

If anyone sounds like Mr T (or knows him!), send something in.

Audition lines are in the VAA link.

Thanks.

I wasn't going to audition until Reno came up, but I think I may just if you still don't have a Barret.

Again, no Barret.

Another extension.

Some sound editing to the voice is possible so if you have a deeper voice naturally, please do send something in.

I'm itching to start recording!

*Still* no Barret.

The rest of the cast could be completed now (even though you can still send something in for others as auditions aren't officially closed yet) but we can't move forward without Barret!

If you know anybody who'd fit the part, please let him know about this.

Since i want this project to be finished, i would like to give it a shot for Barret's voice actor. I just wanted to ask something beforehand. Since i am from Greece I'm not quite sure if my accent is perfect. Should i give it a shot and audition or not???

I really doubt my friend gets his voice deep enough for barret. He's more Reno / Hojo / Rufus type
I think the main problem here is that barret-voice-like people are not exactly the nerdy type
Title: Re: FF7 Voice Audition Thread - Bombing Mission

Why not just get someone to do the voice acting then run the samples through a program that will deepen it, and just mess with it from there?  Seems like the best bet.

You'd be right to assume most black guys don't seem to be huge ff fans for some reason, based on the auditions we've seen.

As for your friend, is his voice is deep enough to be Rude, I'm sure some minor voice editing on our part could get him there.  Please ask him to send something in.  We can't move forward without a Barret.

That's exactly my plan.  However, the voice must have some inherrent qualities to start with.  For example, the director's voice who is somewhat high pitched can't come close to doing a Barret without totally destroying the sound bite through editing.  That's why a deeper voice, even though it might not be "Mr. T" deep, would probably work as sound editing could get us there for the remainder of the way.

Edit : All roles cast EXCEPT for Barret.  Recording will not start until a suitable Barret is found.

Do you need a super quality mic? I have a webcam mic, And i'm not exactly Mr.T deep. But i can be angry and deep like i always thought he was.
Title: Re: FF7 Voice Audition Thread - Bombing Mission

Mic quality is an important point but you should try to submit something regardless.  Sound editing will be done on the material.

If you get picked, a fairly good quality mic is only 10-15$ and I'd suggest getting one at that point though.

Title: Re: FF7 Voice Audition Thread - Recasting Cloud
Post by: Marc on 2011-07-19 03:02:58
I didn't make that call, the director did so I don't know the exact reason.  I assume he didn't submit his lines in a timely fashion after being reminded a few times.  Since this is scene 1, it's the right time to make these kind of adjustements.

You know what would really help grow interest of potential VAs for this?
If you give a rough idea of what kind of voice is needed for a role. In some cases it is pretty obvious ( Barret, Aerith, Yuffie ) in others it's pretty much free guess ( Tifa, Vincent, Cat Sith, Red 13, Reno, Rufus, Hojo )
Sure, people could try to orient themselves on the AC voices but eh..

I've been planning on auditioning for Reno as soon as the role opens up later on, fully planning on doing a Quinton Flynn impression. Why? Because he played the part so perfectly that it just wouldn't be as good any other way.
Title: Re: FF7 Voice Audition Thread - Recasting Cloud
Post by: Marc on 2011-07-19 11:48:55
Voice type ideas are provided in the VAA thread as well as the proper lines.

Edit : also recasting Biggs.  We did receive most of the other lines for scene 1 though so we should have a video up within a few weeks!

Update : Cloud recast.  Still looking for Biggs.
Title: Re: FF7 Voice Audition Thread - Recasting Biggs and Barret
Post by: Marc on 2011-08-17 12:29:53
Unfortunately, our Barret has opted out just as he was finising recording his lines.  I assume the standard of quality and the needed revisions was too hard for him to stomach.

So we, again, need a new Barret.  As well as a Biggs.

If nobody steps up, the director could voice Biggs although its not our preferred choice but Barret is too far for his voicetype.

We have the recordings for every other scene 1 VA and the quality is stellar.  A great improvement over the first take of this project so I'm confident that once we've found reliable VA'S for the major roles, this project will move ahead full speed.

If you have a bassy voice, please send us a demo (Barret lines are in the VAA link up top) and we'll go from there!

Barret has a huge role in the first parts of the game but is a bit less intensive as it goes on so someone committed is required.

Thanks.

We are awaiting for some auditions from some VA who have already played the part in other projects but the part hasn't yet been cast so we definitely would encourage you to audition.

First suitable audition gets the part so send something in ASAP if interested.

Yes, you are.  It's always longer to start the casting process if you're holding to your standards, which we are.  Most big roles have been cast.

Still need a biggs? I might accept the part. How good of a mic should i get? (don't have one) and what recording software?

Sure.  I'll have the director post his comments on the mic here.  I use audacity for recording software.  Open-Source.  Free.  High quality and easy to use the noise cleanup feature.

If you want a USB Pre-Amp, you could practically get anything at your local music store.

Awesome.  Biggs is cast.  The whole cast is ready to go.

Director should have received Barret's lines already.  So revisions on those, biggs lines, sound editing and the first video should go up.

This took much longer than expected but I'm happy we're finally getting there!
