It already supports lossless audio in form of wav, if you name the tracks properly (starting numbers are what is important) but it will not loop this way.  Looping will only work with OGG and I will not be doing anymore work on this mod after the release.

1.  99% of people cannot distinguish high quality compressed music (like 192k ogg) from flac or wav.  They sometimes think they can but can't.

2.  Even if they could, they'd need top quality music system to notice.

3. This is a game and as such a tradeoff between size and quality is needed.

It is pointless to place lossless music and audio into a game.  Pointless and a waste of space.  (See MGS4)

Gonna have to agree with DLPB, i back up my music in FLAC (i also have 8TB of storage so i don't care)

And i can hear the difference with my bose speaker system, However on my laptop? Highs seem slightly better. but i think thats a placebo effect.

Given that FF8 OST comes from a midi-like instrument set to begin with, it is extremely unlikely that you really can see such a difference.  With orchestral and classical pieces, perhaps.  Not with a FF8 music.  That simply cannot be.  And in any case the OST of ff8 is far better than what you will get with PSF or even the original playstation.

Your drop in quality, if any at all, is negligible.

Also, this is a game, it's purpose is not for admiring the music.  If that is what you want, you just get flac and listen to it in a music player.

W02 is being uploaded.  This should be the FINAL release in terms of music.  The actual dll may need further tweaking, although Kranmer has completed disc 1 with NO problems. A 100% record so far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5-KKFJ-wCI#t=1m18s

W02 is Here
or Here

Latest Raw.dll (2.2) HERE.  Just pop it in the same place as FF8.exe after you have installed the mod.

As ever, read the readme on the installer's license page.
To bring up the RaW menu, press F1 in game.
To display information, double click the info window.

NOTE: Use non-geforce Square patched ff8.exe.
Aali's driver has ended any need for geforce versions.

Code: [Select]

HISTORY

W02 21.Oct.2012
Massive improvement to RaW.dll
More music added.
Certain music tracks corrected.

I consider this finished aside from bug fixes to RaW.dll

OTHER

The OST did not include a number of musics.
These are:

Starting Up (Looped)
Don't Be Afraid (X-ATM092)
The Landing (No Intro)
The Landing (Alternate, unused)

I corrected the above as follows:

Starting up (Looped) converted entriely from PSF.
The intro only of Don't Be Afraid (X-ATM092) from PSF.
The first drum beat of The Landing (No intro) from PSF.
The Landing (Alternate) converted entirely from PSF.

The Landing (Alternate) is given as an option;
it did not appear in the final playable game
(apart from the debug menu).

The following music was not added:

Liberi Fatali (Comes with the FMV)
Ending Theme (Comes with the FMV)

On an unrelated note:
FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC is an anagram of
"Love" and "SUCCESSION OF WITCHES"

Special thanks to Kranmer for all his testing and help.

I just re-installed 8 after finding this. I've never completed 8, it's my least favorite FF.  This mod is amazing. The quality of the music is so pleasing to the ear, i'm excited for the first time to play this again, and maybe now, get through it. DLPB, what words can i really use to describe yet another amazing mod from you? Stunning work as usual.

If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing properly.  I will have a look at the english font next if I can.  Sort the basics for battle/menu but I am a bit busy fixing a pong game I started in 2007.  I left it for a long time and now I have returned to it I have no idea where I am.  Shoddy code layout and a right old mess to sort out here.  Will take a long time to fix this mess.

 8)  Glad you are enjoying.  Until a few months ago I had no clue how to make that dll let alone program it to do what I have.  Shame I didn't learn all this 2 years ago, then we wouldn't have suffered ff7music for so long.

...then we wouldn't have suffered ff7music for so long.

That's something I was going to suggest on replacing for ff7 (but with any variations too, not only the OST)... I was wondering if loading ff7music from a different folder than where the original ".exe" is creates various issues...

Great project, but in Disk 3 in Cetra, when abord Garden, game crashes in Windows 7 64 Bit.

Fixed: Put Eax.dll in System 32 folder.

The game may crash for tons of reasons, always make sure it is specific to my mod before posting.

Just did a quick test here under Linux (Ubuntu 12.04 64bit), seems to work just fine!  8)
thanks DLPB, this is a nice addition to FF8!!

It would be very nice to have the Premonition and Extreme in the Black Mages version too...

Question: is the loop data hardcoded?
(If I add my own OGG files with loop data, will they loop?)

If he has used vgmstream (and it would be insane not to) then it gets the loop data from the ogg's metadata. This is the best way to go since it also allows the user to swap in any OGG they like.

I use bass.dll.  But same difference, I programmed it to get the metadata.  There are 1 or 2 tracks (or maybe one, "movin'"  where I had to hardcode the start point because of how ff8 works (and I got lazy on it).  But that was extreme minority.

I had no idea it would work under linux, that's a good bonus.  Perhaps a clue was in the title.

I didn't add those black mage tracks because... I find them crap.  8-)  I'm done with this project (in terms of music), but if you add them, post them here for everyone.  8-)

sounds good to me!

Question now is which software can I use in linux that supports looped OGG...  :-\
(I think I'll have to use some Windows tools for this)

btw, Dissidia has a nice FF8 Battle (Don't be afraid) theme.  :)

Not sure but use vgmstream plugin and something like winamp.  That will allow you to test. I dunno if winamp can work in linux.

Inside FF8, use F1 to bring up menu, then double click info panel.  This will show you the loopstart value.  The tags you use MUST be LOOPSTART only.  The music must end with the start of the loop.  Check my oggs for example.

Re: [REL] Roses and Wine (for FF8)
I found 2 issues:
1 - it crashes on close (using Alt+F4). Not sure if it's because I'm using linux though.
the crash says something about winmm. my guess is that the music is not stopping in time.
(this issue is not very important)

2 - the F1-dialog quickly appears when starting the game, then hides.
This causes a small issue when running under fullscreen, the real FF8 window doesn't get focus so it doesn't start until I do a mouse click (thus selecting the FF8 window).
Not sure what can be done to fix this, perhaps you can force the FF8 window to get focus/attention? or not show the F1-dialog at startup?

apart from those small issues, it seems to be working great!

1st issue, don't use Alt+F4.   8) Although no idea why it crashes for that.  Does it do it without dll loaded?

2nd issue, I know about it (I tried to fix it long before 1st release) but unfortunately I do not yet know how to show the form without modal so it HAS to appear before I can hide it.  I am looking into it believe me. As you say, using click sorts it which you'd have to do anyway for volume changes.
