The only one I can give my blessing to is Anxious Hearts.

Trust me...I was the big FF7 Music nut here back in the day.

In addition, there WAS a project on here EONS ago called "The Final Fantasy Remake Project", which was more of a fan-sequal than a remake. That got canned, though.

I don't see how a new Engine would run into any legal issues, so as long as the CD protection is still in place and it still uses the original (or most of) the original game files.

I mean, that's usually what allows more YARE/ROSE servers to run.

Well, again, CT:R was made from scratch. They didn't resell or enhance anything.

Copyright protects the particular way an author has expressed himself; it does not extend to any ideas, systems, or factual information conveyed in the work.

CT:R was all done from scratch, and the "research" part would work for them on the Tech Demo issue, showing off a few remade scenes from the game.

Also Qhimm, the way you replied to my post, 8-Bit Theatre WOULD also be infringement (especially since it uses many of the original sprites), as would any comic such as Penny-Arcade, VGCats, Mac Hall...etc.

CT:R appeared as if they were trying to make a commercial game for-profit, a blatant copyright infringement.

They didn't get sued, they got a Cease and Desist order.

Extracts backgrounds out of FF and allows you to repack them?

Brilliant!

However, two nits: In the Aeris Death scene, Seph's hands should be raised up, not flopping like he's pretending to be a beautiful seagull or something. Also, Hojo's hands should be clasped, not...so awkward. Anyway.

Does this thing do what I THINK it does?

Again, that wasn't a game, and they got into trouble with Square because they made themselves sound like (through really bad press releases) they were trying to make a commercial game, when in fact they were trying to generate publicity by releasing a multi-platform tech demo.

That's the short version. See my post in General for the long one.

Also, AFAIK, it's already been done with RPG Maker...several times. Hell, if I remember correctly, there's even a CALCULATOR version.

RPGMaker is horrible anyway...it doesn't scale!

Not that I know of. Try turning on Anti Aliasing to the highest you can, encoding a few MP3s and a Movie while downloading a bunch of huge files peer-to-peer while also transferring big files across a network...while playing a few MP3s (muted) and movies (muted) all in the background...and that should maybe make it go by in a few more seconds.

Correction: The CT: Ressurection guys did NOT have very good communication skills, and thus that got Squeenix freaked out thinking that they were making a complete Chrono Trigger remake and were going to distribute it for-profit on several different platforms.

This was not the case. CT: Ressurection was actually a VERY ambitious and revolutionary TECHNICAL DEMO, with the grande purpose of showcasing the team's work, as well as the programmer's purportedly magical, multi-purpose AND multi-platform software engine. It wasn't going to be very playable...just faithfully reproduce some of the more memorable scenes from the original game. They planned to distribute it on PC, PS2, GCube, and X-BOX formats...which then got Squeenix's attenion. Unfortunately it was marketed as a "Chrono Trigger Game Demo" and that's what got them shut down.

If I could call to your attention the infamous Nintendo vs. Suicide Girls debacle, these companies just blindly hand out their Cease and Desists, they don't actually investigate things. I'm sure if the CT: Ressurection guys explained it was just a tech demo, and maybe promised to only make one scene, they could have been okay. This "Blind" Cease and Desist was sent under the assumption that their intellectual property rights were being violated in a commercial manner, and that CT: Rezz was actually a full, working game being developed (truth be told that would make them even more furious, since a garageware team would be outshining them :p).

I'm pretty sure Squeenix doesn't care too much about stuff as long as it's for free and completely uncommercial, considering that some websites have the FF1 source code up and available, as well as all the sprites and infamous sprite comics *cough8bittheatrecough* that run off donations and T-shirt sales floating around the internet. It's just blind Cease and Desist syndrome, IMO.

Anyway, in keeping with the Blind C&D theme, Stroud Crife really WOULD probally be safe until it gets particularly buzzworthy, since these companies appear to hire people for the sole sake of trolling Google/botcrawling the web for violations. I'm pretty sure re-arranging letters would defeat it quite easily :p

This has been your regular Kojiro Historical Disambiguation and/or Correction. We now return to your regularly scheduled thread.

No 3D? You sure?

What about the 3D that the Tony Hawk games pull off? You'd just only have 3D for the Fields...not the battles, minigame, or World Map.

44
They took Bleem! to court for frivolous BS.

No legit website I've seen offers the BIOS anywhere...but if you don't know where to easily get files, then you don't need to be tinkering with such things :p

45
For the backgrounds, isn't there an unpacker for them?

Then we just need to scale up, then repack...

46
Lower Anisotropic filtering and try different FSAA modes using Rivatuner.

Trust me, I'm pretty sure the problem is in your AA filter use. I've been able to get FSAA running perfectly fine in the past...

47
N-Patches ARE Truform. N-Patches are the technical name, Truform is the marketing name.

nVidia cards have had support for RT-Patches, which were nVidia's answer to Truform. However, when a truform-enabled game detected an nVidia card, it would mistakingly think that it had N-patch support. The card would then take the N-Patches and convert them to RT-Patches _very_slowly_. This was around the time of the Geforce 3. Now, there WAS a patch to unlock RT-Patches, but that was for the Detonator drivers, not Forceware.

The software workaround seems more efficient, IMO.

Edit: Saint, about tweaking the models...not really. Apparently it's a simple matter of telling the software "this is a crease" and that's that, for the edges that is.

48
Well, this is because you could download the BIOS off the internet as opposed to extract the one that comes with your PSX.

Sites don't usually offer the BIOS since there's no way of telling if you actually own the Playstation yourself or not.

49
For commercial reasons.

Boy, you also seem to have the facts VERY wrong.

Bleem! never used the PSX BIOS in any way, shape, or form. It was all done from scratch.

Nevermind that Sony lost every case. That didn't stop them, though - the reason Bleem! closed down was because there's no protection in the system from a company suing you repeatedly (even if it loses). Sony made sure they were buried in court costs, and that's what killed the company.

50
It is, and if you're getting no results you must not be using it correctly.

Anyway, that's not what I meant. nVidia cards do not have any higher order surface support whatsoever. The hardware does, but it's all disabled in the drivers.

The plugin I'm suggesting would be one that runs the software code, similar to what Orkin's doing.
