yeah the green text is used somewhere... it was either in a dream, for tutorials or somewhere playing card games xD IIRC

It seems like Spanish was translated really well whereas German and French had some missing bits.
the german version is actually translated really well (text wise), I think most of the not translated expressions like "fast" and "slow" instead of "schnell" and "langsam" were because of space constraints in the palette files.
never played the Japanese version, so I have no idea what quality the translation has but FFIX and FFX were great to an interesting length, they re-translated the Japanese version to be closer to it in German I think XD

I don't know why but it seems to work now...
I tired with triple triad, project eden and project seed reborn, all of them alone and together -.-
now it just works after a few hours of pen&paper Shadow Run and a few more hours of The "Secret World" I get the error now only if I activate GeDoSaTo (Generic DownSampling Tool) from durante which is logical as it'S an injection hack too those two should not mix without extra work XD

ok I get an unknown exception ... at startup (right after I click play in the launcher after the window opens)
So I tried to use old drivers and new drivers for my graphics card and I reinstalled vcredist for VC++2010 x86
but nothing helps, yes overlay is deactivated and all that stuff.
The instant crash vanishes when I deactivate tonberry or if I set the wrong drive in the prefs.txt (though it then crashes if it encounters custom textures)

Info:
Win7 64bit (English)
Nvidia GTX 570 - driver 314 and 340
Steam on drive E:\
German game version happens on the english version too though...


EDIT:
so windows says the faulty module is AF3DN.P whatever that is.
If no textures present and prefs.txt is set to drive C it starts without problem and I can even dump textures though obviously (or luckily) only noreplace and nomatch show up.
If I try to use it with textures to replace it crashes when it reaches the point when it should replace them windows says the faulty module is d3d9Callback.dll
hope this helps somehow

EDIT2: texture dumping works as long as I don't try to replace textures

I'm not sure what context they are in either... I think they are status effects from the spells... so not the spell (noun) but the effect of the spell.  Would the current translation work for that?  Or would it be better just to leave it "Fast" and "Slow"?

they are likely in the settings buttons for text speed but don't really know

Also - anyone out there who is using the german version - I still need a few palettes to finish the translation, so if you are willing, PM me and we can get through Omzy's debug process together.
I'll see if I can get my hands on a steam version, if so you'll get one

By the way we could stay with 'Trigger' for 'Auslöser'. It has become slowly a German word. (It's a wrong translation because we are talking about the trigger of a gun and this would be an 'Abzug'.)

There stands Fahigkeit.

didn't think of it as "press the trigger of the gun now!" but I love it "Abzug" would totally work
and yeah "Fahigkeit" was in the original files^^ it's still wrong and we were talking about the changed version of McIndus which is "Fähigkeit" which is correct IMO

i have made a mistake  ;D "FAHIGKEIT" to "FÄHIGKEITEN" or to "ABILTITY" ("ABILITY" is in the original german version)

isn't "Fähigkeit" fine? it's not plural in english...

also "Nv." is also "Lv." in German, "notice" or "Bescheid"(not used outside of a sentence with the exception being legally...) is more likely "notiz" or "erkennen" I don't recall how it's used in the game but I think it was either as help or when you scan an enemy the first means "note" and the second "to notice"

I also do not remember how "Num." or "Menge" is used... if it's Number as in this is number five it would be also Num. in German if it's a number for the amount though it would be "Menge"

"HP" is also called "HP" in the German version of the game but TP should be fine since it's a transliteration "LP" as in "Life Points" would also be acceptable incidentally the same in German "Lebens Punkte"

I don't know when "bullet" or "Kugel" is used but kugel is correct but means the same as "ball" (same word in German btw.) as in a spherical object... so maybe "Munition" the german word for "ammunition".

we call items in games also "Item" as in an item you can use like a potion not for example items on a list. so I'd change "Objekt" actually back to "Item"

Fast and Slow and many others like bullet are actually in English in my dumped files (got the german disc version) make of that what you will^^
PS: the "Ausloer" was seemingly done for concern of space in the file -.- like much stuff if you get it to work "Auslöser" would be correct, though I think trigger is meant to be imperative.... which would be more like "Lös Aus!" transl. "trigger it!"

also I'd like to remark I'm royally greatful and will do my darndest to support your project so tell me if you need anything

Awesome! especially if you consider the annoying Icon_xx.png splitup into Iconfl_00_xx.png to Iconfl_03_xx.png (have to get my hands on an american release sometime just to see if the german files work on it as good xD)

Hopefully we can actually change where the game looks for an image soon (I want dedicated playstation button Icons for my buttons XD)

Anything new on repacking background archives, those for the magic effects (lol) or just reading external *.tim files?

WoW, especially the cards look fantastic if I find the time I'll implement your upgrades for the german version around monday (otherwise next WE)

that is if you don't mind that I use it

EDIT:
I did a quick test to see if I even need to do anything to the files, and no they work marvelously and look fantastic (the magita_00.png is not perfect but it works better than vanilla res IMHO)

could not test all GF cause I don't have a save with all of em right now though

EDIT: updated a few files because I got the urge to try and iron out a few bugs, worked all right now the most glaring (for me) bugs have been vanquished please report if you find more bugs

I've got a problem.

Small dots around the letters. I tried to play with resolution, preserve_aspect, linear_filter, fancy_transparency options, but there's don't help.
Any ideas?


yeah, I can fix it but I'm too lazy atm.
If you want to fix it no prob. iirc it's because somehow the invisible colour used for the images mixes with the colour a little around the image rendering it opaque. I tried to fix it and succeded with Photoshop.

I just made everything opaque entirely invisible so the game doesn't copy it anymore the problem was and is I'm not done with improvements!!! and everything I have not worked on is opaque so if do this it would make future work very hard and everything I have not worked on yet totally invisible in game

Anyone knows why i might be experiencing crashes while using this mod with aali 0.7.11b driver? The seem to be random, and do no occure without the menu mod  :-( maybe resolution has something to do with it? I use 1280x800 windowed.
I don't know the only thing I can think of is your video ram could be insufficient XD but that seems like a stretch

also I very much would like to know why the game registers colour and alpha layer for opaqueness? or is that just my inability to work with photoshop?

EDIT: here the dots are black because the opaque pixel lets you see the background directly.

there enjoy the rest was made in a rush and I'll update it in the next few days again to fix this annoying opacity problem

if you find anything looking atrocious in the interface please send pics so that I know where to fix and what to fix^^
also what resolution you use would be nice

install instruction:
install aali's OpenGL driver v0.7.11b or later
configure mod path ( mod_path = . ) in FF8_opengl.cfg
extract the 7zip file to you FINAL FANTASY VIII\mods folder (if there is no mods folder in your FF8 directory create one)


the beta was made for a resolution of 1680x1050 but should work with other resolutions

how can i use this with the german version?
the same way like with the other versions but it's not working right in german, I'm working on a german version but got a little side tracked XD

I'll release a version that's nice enough to play in the next few days.  I used almost everything from the original project seed except for few times when it seemed impossible also I coloured the elements...

yeah since I used low res pictures ( from this site http://www.ff8a.com/gf.html#anchor_909 ) and just resampled them I had some aliasing and blurred them a little bit
for anyone who want's to redo this or use more sophisticated methods the picture dimensions of the avatars seem to be 256x384 and they already have the right aspection ratio
and for some of them I played around with the colour a little bit

EDIT: I have some problems, can someone point me in the right direction  for a fix?

I'm using the german version and aali's driver 0.7.11.b
also what programs can I use to extract my game data?for menus textures and such.


EDIT:3 I now fixed most problems for me... no more unintended dark or yellow characters no artifacts and I added a high res version of the german extra characters like "Ä" and "ß"

but sometimes the game baffles me and uses not a high image ... that bothers me since now the games looks half good XD

I tried to upscale the pictures and replace them with higher res versions afterwards but that didn't work as good as I hoped... anyone know a good workaround?

Try downgarde first. Then ask for another executable, since some are corrupted.

If you mean me then no dice.
I tried some a few and the ones I have work if I switch out the eax.dll with the original to not use Aali's driver

also downgrading not possible since german is supported since 0.7.10

yo I've got the german version of FF8 updated to 1.2 tested geforce and non geforce version
and the problem is a crash and one extra bug the crash I belive is known but the bug I didn't find

the crash is after the eidos logo (rarely I can get further but it crashes always when I get to any point where something different than text is shown ,e.g. main menu or pictures of squall etc, if I get further than the eidos logo)
sadly I couldn't reproduce it again and I didn't save the crash dmp but I'll try further

and the bug is a shader bug apparently I see only white or if I get past the eidos logo crash I can see it fade from black to white if some writing or the squaresoft logo fades in
I can remedy that with turning shaders of or replacing the no light shader with the normal shader
