The first graphic mod for the STEAM version of Final Fantasy VIII (thanks Omzy!)
High Quality Remaster and Card Replacement for the Triple Triad card game.

- Tripod replaces the Triple Triad cards, text, icons and backgrounds with Higher Quality versions
- Tripod also replaces the in-menu cards to reflect the cards you collect through Triple Triad
- Tripod is dependent on having Tonberry v1.6 or later installed *

Directions:
1.   Download "Tonberry: Enhanced (v1.6 or later)" HERE (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15945.0)
1.5  You also might need Microsoft VC++ Redistributable at this point:

2.   Install the Tonberry components into: /steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII/
3.   Unpack "Tripod v1.2" and copy the contents of "textures contents" into your "textures" folder in your ff8 app folder
4.   Put the TripodMaster_hm.csv file in:  /steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII/tonberry/hashmap/
5.   PLAY!

There is one glitch so far!  It seems like the backgrounds don't always load 100% of the time when in Triple Triad.  I'll let Omzy know and we'll keep working on it!

It is a png lib DLL you need for most mods and emulators.

Also -- I'm currently finishing Tripod v1.1 and the text and icons are really coming along nicely!  I will post a youtube video with some gameplay as well as some screenshots when the project is complete.

Do you have Tonberry v1.2 installed?  Can you uninstall/reinstall the mod?  Also - make sure you have the Steam client open and not just the FF8 exe.  Just to be sure - restart your computer. for some reason, i think directx9 needs to be reset sometimes. (not sure though)  Let me know if any of this works.

Well it looks by me the same, but I believe that some files aren't the same in different languages (my game is German). I haven't looked into that closer so I'm not sure. However the first Seed project had a special version for German.

I had the same problem with him. I restarted and it didn't work. Background in card game is not HD quality.

Make sure you have the latest version of "hashmap" from the Tonberry page.  It should work with v1.2 and later.
Also - update your graphics drivers - this step has helped a lot of people with DirectX issues.
If that doesn't work, try re-installing Tripod and then reboot when you're done with everything.

Are you playing the English language version of the game?
Can you post your system specs?

I use Tonberry 1.4 and hashmap 1.2. So, I tried reinstalling tri pod and restarting many times but it didn't work. I 'll update my gpu driver and feedback later.
Here 's my specs:
Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit
Core 2 duo E7400 2.8 Ghz
Ram 3 Gb
Vga: ATI HD 6770 (driver v 13.2)

Finally got the mods to work but having the same problem as "Kisirong2501". Same old background and old numbers for me, the rest works...A restart didnt resolve this problem for me either. Hope a solution will be found soon.

Check the image files that aren't showing up in Photoshop and if the layers show Background (locked) then right click it and click 'Layer from background" so that it just says Layer 0. Save the file and try again. If they are already 'Layer 0' then it may be a Tonberry issue which I will look into.

I'm not even sure if i understand what you're telling me here to do (i dont even have photoshop) and something very weird just happened. Without having to restart the game or anything the new background and numbers popped up but only once. After i won i went for another card game match, and back to old background and old numbers. I was so excited to see it work just once, but what could the problem be? What could cause it to work one time and not the other? I didnt even exit the game or anything, really weird.

PS: If it helps, i'm using Windows 32bit and couldnt even get any mods to work prior to Tonberry 1.4.

Edit: It worked again, that's weird, seems to be working now, let's see how long it will stay that way.

Seems to be a mix of both, how the heck could that happen? Well anyway, maybe by pointing out this error, the modders will gain more insight and knowledge and hopefully can fix or avoid similar bugs in the future. You guys doing great and im really happy that the mods are finally working for me and very grateful despite the few bugs here and there. Rock on guys ;)

I'm pretty sure that after we had that last formatting issue, I went through every image file and ensured that they were in the proper format - so all current releases shouldn't have any weird background locked mode issues anymore.  I even get the 1/3 screen issue every now and then... and when it happens, it stays that way until you restart the game... and sometimes it happens on the new title screen as well.  Pretty sure it's a hashing problem, but I'm here to assist in any way!

Also when playing the game itself I find the borders of the cards low res compared to everything else do you plan on updating them in the future? Thanks again

EDIT: Also I found that when choosing cards during a game or simple moving the cursor up and down at certain points, the background card map will flicker/change shape slightly in certain areas. some parts of the card map will get thinner while others get thicker.

The alignment issue is something I've done minor fixes to already in the Menu, but I will be coming out with a hi-res version of Tripod in the future, with hi-res borders, fancy text, and more modern icons -- but that won't be for a while now :)

I'm not sure what you mean by the background flickering. You'll have to post a screenshot or video clip - I can't seem to re-create it.  also - are you playing on a non-english version of the game?

I've actually made 8 dollars from donations in the past month, which surprised the hell out of me! (THANKS GUYS! :D)  I think I spent over 100 hours on the Tripod mod - and right now, I'm in a tight spot without much time.  Between not having enough work this summer and my car dying, I'm broke and without a vehicle, and have to prioritize my time.

However, my channel will be updated regularly and I will have new tidbits and fun things coming around the corner!

I really like this mod, but I always thought the borders look very blurry while the original borders looked very filigree.

So I tried to make borders (and backgrounds) myself (except for quistis borders, the decoration shape is from  deviantart, may have to change it because of licencing etc...), please tell me if you like them :)

Thanks!  I love your borders! We should work together to get them into the game. 

Just a few issues to consider:
1- The Quistis border decoration will have to be replaced by something else (needs to be original art)
2- You should take into account the fact that the borders are stretched by the game when it imports them from the Mod. 
3- Tonberry only allows for 4x the original pixel resolution - and since that image is then stretched out, some of your details may be lost in the transition. (such as fine line/edge detail and gradients)
4- I have no idea where the background hues are kept for Triple Triad, and they currently aren't moddable - but they are for the in-game menu.  Everything I dealt with for Triple Triad had a transparency associated with it.
5- Triple Triad and the in-menu cards are two separate mods essentially.  They would have to be independently modded if you want your borders to be implemented for the in-game card menu.

BTW -- I love the grey, green, blue, purple color scheme and would like to expand on it further.

Unfortunately from what I've seen, Tonberry can't implement semi-transparent layers for Triple Triad unless they were originally intended to be that way - so I think you would have to remove the gradients for this to work.
Also - your background wouldn't work unless we could replace the original backgrounds (blue/pink) but considering we have no way of finding them currently, we should just stick with the originals.  They show your cards vs. your opponents, so having the different colored backgrounds is important - and would require the backgrounds to be 100% transparent.

After you fix #1, could you remove the semi-transparent color gradient layers and the background image entirely and just send me the PSD of the borders you have with a transparent background?  I don't need any characters - I can superimpose your borders over my own fairly easily, and I'd like to test them to see what they would look like in-game.  I would like to add your borders to my next Tripod release which will feature updated Text and Elemental Icons! It will be released as a "Tripod Deluxe Edition" release.  I would give you credit, of course :)

Cubic would be best - it would save me time resizing everything. Thanks!

I'm also considering doing the 4 translations for this mod like I am doing for the SeeD Reborn Project.  It should take considerably less time to make the Tripod Translation mod happen than it has for SeeD Reborn which has turned into a larger undertaking than I originally planned.

It might be because of your italian version, but I doubt it.  Try rebooting your comp (which restarts all directX and steam drivers) and let me know if the problem persists.  Sometimes, Tonberry will glitch and only provide the images and not the backgrounds/text for some reason.  Restarting DirectX and Steam entirely seems to do the trick for those people.  If your issue is because of the italian version, we'll have to address that soon.

Ok, trying other matches i've noticed that cards and number are loaded correctly, but the background are loaded only the half. Exploring the mod's directory i've noticed that basically only the file cardsback_13 is loaded, while the other named cardsback_1 no.

First, thanks for your work and mod! But I have the same 1/3 problem... One part is HQ, the rest is vanilla. Using Tonberry 1.5 incl. Hashmap 1.3 and Tripod Triple Triad HQ 1.1.

I play in English, because in German Roses & Wine doesn't work at all. I played it in English years ago on PSX, it was released way before the German version and had more FPS.

I mean any other texture works, I use the following mods and they work so far:

SeeD Reborn - Menu Overhaul 3.2
Project Eden 1.0
Horizon Pack 2.1
Character Models (from FatedCourage incl. GF models from rufoos)
Final Fantasy VIII 1080p FMVs
Roses & Wine 0.3b Final
Controller Buttons Xbox360

The backgrounds has a couple of glitches here and there, but in all it's 98% perfect. The models include all main characters and 3 more plus all the GFs. The all seem to work, just not the Tripod Triple Triad HQ 1.1 background. So I would say, it's a Tripod Triple Triad HQ 1.1 problem and nothing else.

First, thanks for your work and mod! But I have the same 1/3 problem... One part is HQ, the rest is vanilla. Using Tonberry 1.5 incl. Hashmap 1.3 and Tripod Triple Triad HQ 1.1.

I play in English, because in German Roses & Wine doesn't work at all. I played it in English years ago on PSX, it was released way before the German version and had more FPS.

I mean any other texture works, I use the following mods and they work so far:

SeeD Reborn - Menu Overhaul 3.2
Project Eden 1.0
Horizon Pack 2.1
Character Models (from FatedCourage incl. GF models from rufoos)
Final Fantasy VIII 1080p FMVs
Roses & Wine 0.3b Final
Controller Buttons Xbox360

The backgrounds has a couple of glitches here and there, but in all it's 98% perfect. The models include all main characters and 3 more plus all the GFs. The all seem to work, just not the Tripod Triple Triad HQ 1.1 background. So I would say, it's a Tripod Triple Triad HQ 1.1 problem and nothing else.

Are you using the new version of Tonberry?  Enhanced v1.6?  I believe this will fix the issue if you're playing using the English version.  Let me know if this helps!

This could also be due to hashing collisions.  Make sure you have collisions.csv and hash2map.csv from Tonberry v1.5 - I'm not sure why the problem would persist unless the game perhaps has different background hashes for the different discs? 
Anyway - yes, that's the file to hash, FatedCourage.  Just make sure you have it pointing to the correct cardsmat file.

BTW, I have fixes for the non-English versions, but I'm making new upscaled text for them before I release the fixes.

You're awesome!  Thanks for those codes!  I was hoping my suspicions weren't founded, but it looks like a LOT of hashcodes change based on disc/area.  Objmap codes don't change per area, so that's why some things disappear.  If you find the objmap code for whatever is missing, it should work.  (I found a duplicate or two while hashing enemies so far.  b garden with geezard texture was scary as hell lol)

I have just finished and released the official Spanish version of Tripod!  Enjoy!

I've also updated Tripod in the OP with the new hashmap codes that FatedCourage provided for Tonberry v1.6

No problem. I really like your mod and want to see it at it's best. Yeah... Hashmap codes are a lot more tedious to get. But unlike objmap codes, they yield less glitches. But you are right about finding the codes for the missing textures. It does work. Downside is, a lot of things can disappear from just one code. Just one code from Selphie can cause Zell's mom to go invisible, the T-Rex in the Training Center to lose it's body, and other character's in your group to disappear in some scenes. But you have given me a pretty good idea I'd like to try out! At least until the new hashing algorithm is complete.

Pretty sure there is no problem with your mods. I think there is just a hashcode missing that only occurs after battle. What location are you at when this happens? This helps locate the code needed to fix your problem.

Yeah, there are some areas that have special codes that need to be added for one of the background tiles...  there are bound to be a couple of missing codes.  Could you do me a huge favor?  Open the game and then your save... and go to the area right before the card battle.  Get into a battle (to replicate the problem) and then right before you enter the card game, alt-tab out of the game and enable 'debug' mode.  Then go back into the game and start the card game.... right before you select your cards, disable the 'debug' mode and then send me any bitmap from the 'nomatch' folder that looks like the Triple Triad background. (should be a low-res bitmap).  You can send it to me via Gmail at [email protected].  I will have a code for you right away :)

Mcindus I too am receiving the 1/3 Mat and Low-Res Text in TT.  I started noticing it on Disc 2 in D-District Prison, as soon as I can play cards post-NORG, I will see if the issue persists.

Has anyone else had the error where a 1/3 or a 1/4 of the screen goes back to its original graphic, hoping it doesn't occur this time gonna try it again, don't know if it was the place or anything though at the desert prison because on the world map just after there on the battlefield there's a circle round the party and the enemy both (group) with just a black background, will refer back to this post if any happens again...

This has been reported multiple times, and it's rarely (if ever) permanent. It can usually be solved by restarting the game.

Thank you for your reply, that was the thing i tried and it wouldn't change but now, since updating windows from 8.1 to 10 with the time away i've had im now trying to get tonberry running again but as soon as i put tonberry in the game directory the game wont run would you happen know why that would be, i've been struggling on this for ages now, thank you and thanks for your time.

in game folder \FINAL FANTASY VIII\textures you must have two folders with textures "ca" and "mc"
do you have these folders?

Yeah I have both folders. ca has 4 folders within it and the mc folder has 10 folders within it.

I can actually see the updated backgrounds in steamapps > common > FFVIII > textures > ca > cardsmat and the numbers in steamapps > common > FFVIII > textures > ca > cardstext.

Ahh I dont have a Hashmap folder in my Tonberry v1.5 folder. My hashmaps are sitting directly in the tonberry folder inself. Mine looks like steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VIII\tonberry. I'll try to reinstall tonberry and see if the Hashmap folder appears. Thanks for your help :)

You should use Tonberry Enhanced 2.04 with the proper hashmaps - this should fix your issues

Hey McIndus! Thx alot for your mods! They are awesome! My eyes felt a bit achy when The opening ended, the first time I launched the game unmoded :-D Now I can play it again to remind me the old good time of innocence!

Yet I have an annoying issue with Tripod...
The right part of the background doesn't apply :-s
I'm using Tonberry 2.04 with the latest collisions and hash2map plus the latest version of your other mods (SR FR + SCP CB FR, HP 2.1, LC 1.2), Flame Rebirth 1.1 R&W W04 and Project Eden 1.0!

I just thought that I should try a clean install with Tripod only, I would do so tomorrow and let you know the results! What should I do if I find a collision? What would you do? Do I have to modify the collisions file?

I tried debug mode and I'm finding the 2 right parts of the triad background int the nomatch folder... What should I do..?

I'm wondering how hashmap files work so I could fix this myself... I downloaded BerryMapper and tried the cardsback_1.png and it gave me a different hashcode than in the tripod_hm file, I'm wondering why :-s I dug into the csv file and saw that each backgorund file has multiple hashcode and I'm wondering why... Some lines are reapeated in the file, the exact same lines, "same background file,same hashcode" and I'm wondering why ^^'

Please enlighten me about all of this so I could fix the issue asap ;-)

You can put any of the images you find in the 'nomatch' folder that have anything to do with Tripod and send them to me in a .zip file.  I can then hash them and update the french hashmap with the correct codes! thank you!  you can do this yourself, but if you send them to me, I will update the hashmap for ALL of the french users out there!  thanks! :)

Cool! I'm glad you're still working on that project :-D So, I made a clean install with Tripod and basics, I mean RaW ;-) Impossible to play with those lame sounds and musics from default...

First off I just wanna say thank you for how much on all you provided for final fantasy viii. Your the reason why I bought it on steam, I love your work.

But I'm having some issues with triple traid. The back of the cards and cardsmat_1 are HQ.  The rest are the original graphics. I've delete every mod and tonberry and re installed  it back. But it seems like its not working. Every other mod is working beautifully.

Update
The Problem only occurs after a battle. If I go straight to card duel the mod works. But if I fought any moster before hand the mod only halfway works.

I have the same problem, the text numbers for the cards will be fine but after a while it'll go back to original, i havent verified it as a result from battle, but I'm pretty sure thats what it is.. the first time you go to Fisherman's Horizon in Disc 2 is one of those times..

Are you using the spanish tripod hashmap from the second post of the tonberry 2.04 forum page??? please update and use that one!
if you already are using that one, we might be missing hashcodes - but check that you have hash2map.csv and collisions.csv in /tonberry/, and NOT in /tonberry/hashmap/
if we are missing those codes, i can walk you through the debug process in order to find those textures!  thanks!

Hey McMindus. I got your Lunatic Pandora installer (which just makes installing these main mods SO much easier). The installer includes this Triple Triad mod, and I was disappointed to find that there were still some issues with the left 2/3rds of the card mat looking new, and the right 1/3rd using the original graphics. From what I can tell the Tripod_hm.csv in /tonberry/hashmap still doesn't include the hashmaps that FatedCircle found here:

Okay, that's good. Here are the codes. They seem to fix my issues. I didn't go to many places, but maybe others can test it on their own and see if it helps.

These codes did indeed fix the problem for that. But if they cause problems or something, let me know. :D

Edit #2: Yeah... Found more. Maybe you're right about the hashes changing depending on the disc that you're on.

Edit #3: I found all the codes I could. It shouldn't revert back for the most part. If I had to wager one place it might, it'd be space. I don't have a save file for that point to check. But if things do revert, it'd be nice to know where and at what point in the game. I also found one point where the card text/numbers reverted in Esthar. I didn't hash it because I didn't know which one was the correct one.

I put those in the Tripod_hm.csv and I think that resolved my issue. I just wanted to let you know in case you're still around to update this.

Going to be doing a huge test/overhaul with this mod -- for version 1.3!  Version 1.2 is simply 1.1 with the 1.2 hashmap fix, but as it seems to be confusing, and certain cards vanish during certain disks, I feel I need to do some bug-testing and come out with a 'better' version of this mod for all languages.

If you're doing a bug test, one bug that I've noticed is that the earth element doesn't always show up correctly. Instead, it loads the lower resolution version. Also, as previously reported, the lines on the game board wobble.

Hey McIndus, I'm happy to hear that you're still working on an update for this mod! I also ran into the known-issue of the Triple Triad game background and card numbers reverting to original low-res textures.

For me: It was working the entire time I was in Balamb Garden in my new game (first 2 hours of playing Disc 1 via Steam+Lunatic Pandora mod (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=391096600)). I went to nearly all areas of the Garden, and battled enemies in the Training area.

The mod seemed to fail when I left Balamb Garden, battled some enemies in the grass, forest, and beach outside of it. I didn't notice until I challenged the Queen of Cards in Balamb that the background texture and card number values had downgraded in quality.

In an effort to fix it I have tried restarting the game and launcher several times, then just restarted my computer and nothing has changed.

However, I just tested an older save-game file from the time I was still in Balamb Garden and it still works! Still shows all of the updated textures in Triple Triad. Only my current save-game after the battles is broken.

When I immediately leave Balamb Garden with a good save-game and run to Balamb city and challenge the Queen of Cards my game then loses the high-res Triple Triad background/card numbers all over again.

I think this fits in line with your suspicions that certain places lose the textures (or "hashmaps"?) depending upon in-game location. Hope this helps with your update!  :)

Hey, new here. Pretty much made an account just to ask this question.

Really appreciate the work and time spent in making the mods. I grabbed FFVIII on steam mostly so I could play Triple Triad. I saw that an updated mod has been made for the textures which is great because currently it looks like slices of potato.
However I'm having difficulty (and I've noticed a few others with the same issue) actually downloading the zip of Tripod. The hash is on googdrive but perhaps I'm missing something. Some end-user mod downloading tactic. So far for the past couple of hours I've tried to magically get around a site infested with ads and I'm not even sure a file exists on the other side of it. I tried on multiple browsers, white-listing, taking off all anti-ad extensions as well. No dice.

So then I did some deep searching of the internet to see if this mod existed anywhere else (except on all the peoples computers above this reply of course). Alas, it did not.

So kindly and graciously, I'm requesting that if anyone has a zipped up version of Tripod (preferably ENG) that would be able to email it, dropbox or google-drive link it. I would love that.

Really would rather not like to load up PS/AI to start doing this myself, when it seems to have been perfectly done anyway.

hi guys, Im currently building a mod built on top of this. it would be cool if it will be merged. im wiling to work on my spare time :)

basic gist is i just really wanted the GF's portrait artwork to be used in the cards instead of their 3d models then i realized that most of the portraits never really got passed in the sketching stage of the game so i resorted to inking some of them and some i had to rely on their 3d models and or their concept art.

building this i also come up with the problem with the face portaits of the character artworks. no wonder in the game version they literally had to use the face only of the characters

Features and Differences for Tripod
- Card face borders are now replaced with simple gradient borders
- Border detailing is a re-imagined design more specifically for character cards
- Character Cards are scaled down to feature more of their portrait artwork. shaping was applied as background to work around the limitations of the original artworks
- Guardian Forces are all replaced by RE-INKED portrait or concept or line artworks or 3d models of the game.
- Colors of portraits are ntsc safe colors, in this way you can take advantage of reshade in apply HDR or other effects on it without looking over-saturated  or too bright
- New  card Mat and game screen  heavily inspired by the original
- retains text, elemental symbols and all bugs that that tripod has

this is not a replacement for tripod but rather an experiment of an idea so feel free to try it.

This mod requires an update so bad! After the festival scene at FH and after having played a good number of card games where everything was working as intended, I get on the garden and play a few games, only the elemental symbols for water, earth and holy had reverted to vanilla ... I do the Balamb invaded by Galbadia quest, defeat Fujin and Raijin, do another card game and everything was in its glorious 56x56 original resolution! Even the numbers reverted... I had forgotten how awful Triple Triad would look without this mod. Please Mcindus come back to work to this mod <3 <3
And an italian version too??  ;D

Let me bump this thread with a question, is there a way of having the ORIGINAL PS1 CARDS to be upscaled and placed on this game, maybe you guys are already doing this but still, I can't stand the 3D models on the cards ... dunno why ...

That's what I'm refering to, having this classic pictures updated/upscaled and with the shown borders/numbers/icons on the previous pages ... also, erasing it's background should not be so hard as it's "nearly" a plain color (no strange pictures to mess with the background remover tool)

I cannot be the only one hehe

Hi Everybody!
I'm new here, and I want to thank you for all of the things you've done in these many years!

I'm actually replaying FFVIII with all of these mods. Everything works as it should, just some minor bugs with Tripod.
As another user said, starting from CD2 sometimes only a part of the mat is loaded correctly, and the numbers on the cards revert to the original.
I'm using the Steam, Italian version.

I have some questions:

Does a 1.3 Tripod Version exists? You mentioned it in your posts, but the only one I can See is the 1.2 (and it redirects to a 1.1 file ;D)
Does an official Italian Hashmap exists? I'm actually using the 'Demo version' provided by McIndus.
Is there anything I can do to help you with all of this?

Is there a way to have this in spanish fully functional?

At the start of the game 1/3 of the mat was vanilla
Past the ifrit mission i think it got fixed 100%
And exactly at playing Watts for Angelo at the first time you enter the train in the timber owl mission from then on its 1/3 vanilla and numbers vanilla,
i have re-installed Tonberry 2.04 and therefore re-installed the hashmaps of AngelWing, also reinstalled TriPod
and no results.
Please fix this!!

Hey!! I figured out that its seems to be mandatory to have the ENGLISH HASHMAP even if you play in other language!
That fixed everything for me, at least by now. Ill be updating if something new happens!
