Title: Forum upgrade
Post by: Qhimm on 2010-06-19 01:21:22
I upgraded the forum software from SMF 1.1 to SMF 2.0. The transition was not 100% clean, so please have a look around and report any problems or issues here (in this thread).

Not sure if you intended this or not.   General needs moderator approval for guests to start a new topic, but not to reply.      In Completely Unrelated, guests can start new topics and reply.

Brand new members are required to fill out a captcha only on their first post.   Members can also delete any posts they've made.  This includes the original post/thread as long as no one has replied in it.

Not sure if anything can be done about this or if it's even a problem with the software, but the jumplist at the bottom (which I am constantly using) doesn't display any other forum sections unless you wiggle the mouse around a little bit, which is kinda strange. Not that it's a major problem - might just be me.
EDIT: On closer inspection, it just takes longer for them to show up.

"The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."

I'm new here so I'm not sure if it's your way to disable avatars/attachments or really a bug :P

Permissions didn't migrate cleanly so I had to make something up as I went. If something doesn't work well, we can change it.

Also not sure what happened here http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=10036.msg123812#msg123812

Ouch, looks like UTF-8 conversion gone wrong. Wonder if many (older) messages are affected? If so, I'll have to run some kind of recovery...

Brand new members are required to fill out a captcha only on their first post.   Members can also delete any posts they've made.  This includes the original post/thread as long as no one has replied in it.

Again, permissions made up as I went. Switched to 1 easier captcha + 1 security question to try to trick bots while not annoying humans too much.

Sounds like the uploads directory/file wasn't chmodded properly, In regards to the upload file problem. As far as the glitch in characters all I can think of is a directory of a extended character or a emoticon got screwed up. In SMF 2.0 it might be just a simple re-cache of posts. Hope this helps.

this has been like this for a while, but it always bugs me:
Most Online Today: 2. Most Online Ever: 2 (08 May 2006, 04:00:28)

Also, do SMF support styles, maybe a nice FF7/Qhimm border @ the top of the forums? just a suggestion, i really like the new look.

I do like the idea of at least a slight style, this place seems way too plain for the creative minds we've got here (but maybe that's the irony to it).
What about a full-blown theme? Here's something I spent far too long on and which still doesn't look right (http://ncs.millenia3d.net/etc/QhimmTest.jpg), but you get the idea. Not that I actually think it's a good idea to have something like that, but just maybe as an option.

Love it! Don't know if it could be put in but awesome if we could make your theme the theme of the site. I'd probably call for something darker though. Oldforums used to burnout my eyes whenever I flipped on the laptop to websurf in bed in the middle of the night.

There are extensions to allow custom user styles in Firefox and Chrome, such as Stylish. Could be useful for sharing such a style without an admin having to actually implement the thing.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: BlitzNCS on 2010-06-21 15:54:51
Been looking into that. I don't quite get it though, is it just modifying CSS? I'm not quite sure how I'd make it work for specifically this website is all. So far, I can only install pre-created stuff from the website, copying the Qhimm CSS file in just crashes Firefox.

EDIT: Seems a style like that is almost impossible - CSS doesn't support image stretching and because the forum uses one BG image for multiple sections, it's hard to get the FF7 look right

Showing unread topics works, but showing ALL unread topics puts too much stress on the server and rarely works.   Search also seems to be suffering from the same thing "too much load on the server".  And finally, viewing member's posts also causes it.

Is this because of the switch to 2.0?

Once set avatar via URL (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?action=profile;area=forumprofile) I can't change it anymore (no option available):

My fresh 2.0RC3 copy works fine tho:

Wasn't able to find any bug report related to that.

---
Also, in general, RC3 is not so good choice, it has a bit broken search (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=376943.msg2589059#msg2589059) (but well, since it is completely disabled here - no big loss lol).

I get that problem when I click "Show new replies to your posts" even though I probably have none.  However, "Show unread posts since last visit" works fine even though I have loads of those.

Everything was working fine until earlier today, so this all seems quite random...

EDIT: I can confirm the problems with searching the forums and viewing members' posts (even my own), but searching for members seems to be working fine.

Apparently not. What exactly is the problem? You just upload an image and put the url in that box, right?

Bear in mind that one could never have avatars hosted here, or at least not for a long time before the most recent forum upgrade.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that security might be the reason. I read a thread a while ago from someone warning us of a hacker who damaged servers (or something like that) by uploading corrupted avatars.

It's probably easier on bandwidth as well, and I suspect that qhimm isn't a fan of avatars either (he certainly doesn't like signatures...). In fact, I also recall reading a (very old) thread in which he expresses disapproval of them, but it might have been someone else who said it.

You have to take into account those were back in the dialup days of the internets. But I think your right (I ain't a fan of signatures aether it clogs of the screen with repetitive pics) but to get rid of avatars completely? just the preset ones I think is just a small oversight in the setting on Qhimm part.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade

I don't see any need to host avatars on the forum itself anyway.  It's only slightly more bothersome to upload the image elsewhere and link to it.

And I can confirm, with zero doubt, that avatars are working fine.  At least for me.

To people who have trouble with avatars: you probably belong in the group who are banned from having avatars after some incident in the past. It is not a bug in the forum.

Other things caused by the switch:

Apparently I'm unable to send private messages.
I can live with it, maybe it's because I don't have premium membership rights or something.

However, I noticed that I get logged off whenever i click on the "new private message" button.

1°) I click on the "new private message" button, in "My messages" page.
2°) I get an error message "Error : you don't have the right to post private messages".
3°) I click "ok", which set me back to the main page.
4°) I'm a guest, and I have to log in again.

I guess it's unintended?

edit: I can send messages now.  I must have dreamed?

Is it possible to enhance Aali's Custom FF7/FF8 Driver section to 'Patches and fixes'?
I believe it would be better to store there all the new to old patches (from Kranmar and Kompass63).
I also suggest making for Bootleg a complete own section. It would be better to post a problem with Bootleg there, instead of open a new topic in the Troubleshooting section.
So we would have a better overview in both sections.

Since some few days, the thread names are written in huge characters (in every pages, actually). It might be just me, but I don't think so because it wasn't like that before and the other pages (the topics themselves) are just as usual.

Or maybe it is intended? I find it unconvenient anyway ^^'

Quick reply box is no longer showing. Spell check isn't, either, although I never use that (but some might).
Per-user theme settings seem to have been reset with the server move, but those features still work. You can change them back how you want here (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?action=profile;area=theme) (link should work for any user for their own settings). I had to switch quick moderation back to icons there, too.

edit: Spell checking in SMF requires a PHP install with pspell, which (AFAIK) is not default. I don't see it returning any time soon.

A good way to thank Qhimm would be to donate (http://donate.qhimm.com) to help fund the new server. I don't know exact numbers, but as it's a VPS instead of shared hosting, it's almost certainly more expensive than the old one.

I registered someone manually who was having trouble. I figured it was just him; I'll try and get in touch with Qhimm and see if we can't get this worked out; whatever the problem is, it's not immediately apparent.

Edit: It's almost certainly related to one of our anti-spam plugins, and has nothing to do with the server move. We can't really disable these plugins; that would cause all manner of chaos, but anyone with such an issue is free to shoot an email to Covarr, gmail, and I'll gladly make 'em an account manually.

I have a request regarding the Karma system. While it looks at first logical to be able to have negative Karma, it is from the psychological point of view unhealthy. It may even motivate trolls to be rude so they can increase their negative Karma. It also brands people, which may prevents that they get help from us when they really could need it. So I would appreciate it if the lowest Karma is '0'  and only an admin can see if it is negative or not, if necessary.
The world is bad enough already, so I don't need to see on a forum how bad I am.

That at last are my thoughts in that matter.

Unfortunately, SMF's karma system does not have such a feature. I may disable it entirely, but I'll have to think about it; Karma is also especially useful for new users to know whose answers have the most weight with troubleshooting questions and whatnot.

Hello, I have not read any suggestions and others because I speak French and translating everything correctly is complicated.

I therefore propose my ideas and you have to dissect with what has been said before.

So, for me the aesthetics of the forum in general lack of color, it looks a bit dead ... It should give it a really specific style and pertaining to final fantasy, kind of small moogle in notification for messages unread.

Maybe also separate the mods from different games, I remember that to modder FF8 not speaking very well the language I look for more than 3 days to have everything and I still do not have what I really want.

Embed an IRC Chat directly on the main page, and maybe an audio player to make you bored a little less by reading.

I do not know at all what is possible, but for me all this remains of the basic functionalities of a forum.

I hope to help a bit in the ideas :)

EDIT: And banners

I have considered this in the past, but making a decent theme is time-consuming and complicated. Moreso for SMF than for other boards. Between my day job, acting, and planning a wedding, I barely have any free time as it is, and I don't think any of the other site staff are interested in doing this.

Maybe also separate the mods from different games, I remember that to modder FF8 not speaking very well the language I look for more than 3 days to have everything and I still do not have what I really want.
I thought about this, but decided not to for a few reasons:

One idea I had was to add icons for the various games to the forums' thread icon set. You would tag each thread with what game it's for that way. But I gave up on this idea because I kept running into permissions errors on the forum upload. This is something that would need changed in the server, which I can't do myself.

Embed an IRC Chat directly on the main page
Not going to happen, too much work, and potentially annoying for people who aren't interested in it. We have a link to our IRC right in our forum list; that should be enough for anyone interested in it.

and maybe an audio player to make you bored a little less by reading.
Not going to happen, bad idea. If people want music, they can use their own audio players or open YouTube in another tab. For most people it would just make the site load slower, and waste our bandwidth.

EDIT: And banners
I'm not sure what kind of banners you mean. Like a site logo? That's something I would like to put on the forums, but simply haven't done.

When I talk about banner, it is giving the possibility to create a presentation below its post I show you on ff7.fr what I did. It would be interesting for modders to do this kind of thing.

After yes a banner specific to the site of qhimm would be welcome also, I counted that in the "theme" of the site

Oh, I think you mean a signature! Yeah, that was disabled on purpose years ago. I don't remember why, but I'm sure we had a reason. I'll ask around about that.

The mandatory FF tags are good idea. I noticed some bad behaviour here on board. Subjects tagged as:
[FF8] are for sure Final Fantasy VIII topic,
[FF7] are for sure Final Fantasy VII topic,
No tag is 90% Final Fantasy VII topic.
Once some user asked for something without adding tag and one of moderator? argued (maybe that's a little aggressive word) about not adding tag because other users don't know if it's FF7 or FF8 but if you look at the sub-forum, there are like 4-5 topics without tags about FF7 and mod didn't notice it. Yes, of course you can understand if it's related to the game by content as Sephiroth doesn't exist in FFIX for example, but at least one or two topics without tags I was unable to differ which game is it about. Let me post some examples:
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=17421.0 - no tag but clearly FFVII related

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=17312.0 - limit breaks, there's word Tifa so VII related

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=17296.0 - no single hint

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=17370.0 - again, some words indicating VII

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=16804.0 - no single hint at first sight

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=17036.0 - no tag, but the topic is about GFs and GFs are only in VIII

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=16796.0 - ;)

I cant find the topic I wrote about ....  :'(

Yeah, I added tags to the titles of topics on the release sections and put up guidelines for those, but haven't done any such thing for troubleshooting. I would still rather have it as thread icons; I even made icons for them. But the forum won't let me upload them, so unless Qhimm wants to get involved there's nothing I can do.

Life and being busy, last I heard. He pops onto the IRC once or twice a year, but typically only shows up on the forums if something goes horribly wrong that requires his intervention to fix, such as a failed SMF update or something.

People have enough trouble posting images as it is. An SSL cert would effectively block any image hosts that don't use HTTPS themselves, as it's not generally kosher to mix secure and insecure content.

Might I suggest more strict adherence to topic relevance? I believe a lot of the trolling and such could have been avoided if people had just stuck to discussion of the topic and not deviated into digging up past events or side projects. Personally, I see a lot of posts in the WM and PrC topics that ask more of how to do things with the tools (like asking for help on blocks of AI) rather than questions about the tools themselves. Such questions belong in their own topic.

Why?  Encryption fanbois (cough google cough) notwithstanding, what practical benefit does spending the money (and suffering the headaches of installing!) does HTTPS provide to a forum like this?

You have a password used here right?
You type things between your machine and the server?

Currently its all plain text.. Its not very hard to setup  a MiTm and capture packets so its in everyone best interest for all sites to be encrypted.
This can happen at any node between your machine and this server.

It costs nothing to get a cert from https://letsencrypt.org/

@Obesebear Yeah I heard I'm very excited to start adding the things i have scattered about .

That anybody cares about a low-traffic modding site is questionable, and if you're using the same login/pass combo on multiple sites (especially with browser-based password creation and management a thing now) you're already dumb enough that SSL isn't going to help.
It costs nothing to get a cert from https://letsencrypt.org/
Doesn't change the fact that installation and management of certs remains a pain in the butt.

Except it really isn't. Let's Encrypt provides a tool that lets you install the certificate in literally few minutes if you have proper access to the server. You can even add it to cron so it auto-renews itseft. And many shared hosted providers have an option to do all that for you automatically.

At this point there isn't really a reason not to have SSL on your site (unless you just don't have the access to SSH on the server or your hosting provider doesn't give you the option). If you don't care about the security of your account on Qhimm's that's fine, but other people might. Plus SSL is required if you want to switch your server to use http/2, which is a major upgrade to the protocol and makes everything load faster.

Btw the new theme looks really nice :). The only change I would make is to replace the top background image with something more FF themed, I posted a suggestion on Discord.

Edit: Now I see that we could probably also use a new emote pack because this one isn't really compatible with a dark theme, the edges of emotes show spill of the white background.

The set up for let's envcrypt is not that hard anymore. I believe most hosting plans already has a interface for it. in fact in one that i manage any subdomain or domain you setup automatically generates a cert for that. you dont need to do it via the command line and it auto renews.

Hey I got to know only now about this! Thanks Obesebear :)

If possible I'd love to have those features on top:
- MFA Login
- Gravatar support
- Allow login through third part OAuth providers like Github, Google, Facebook, etc. ( so you don't have to rememeber yet another account... )

Thank you in advance in case and keep up the good work! I'm really happy we're modernizing this :) Looking forward

//EDIT: I also do agree with sithlord48 that we must add HTTPS support, especially if we want people to login with username and passwords in the forum.

Most forum software dropped support for Gravatar due to it's spying and data tracking. Not sure if SMF still offers the ability or not, but Gravatar is typically seen as a terrible thing these days that sites steer clear of.
