Title: Open call for ideas
Post by: sl1982 on 2011-03-29 01:58:12
With my upgraded status we can now modify the forums to better suit everyone's needs. So what I am asking for is ideas.

Don't like the way something works? Let me know.
Have a great idea? Post it here and we might be able to implement it.
Think something can be done a better way? Well lets do it.

While I can't promise that everything everyone suggests will be implemented, we can at least have a good discussion and see if it is viable.

So post your thoughts. Go!

#1  Implement a google search instead of whatever this built in one is.

Also, silver stars for the staff ;)

Definitely a good idea, i will look into it.

well I'll rack my brain and try to come up with something useful but for now I'll just say that splitting each board into per game sections would be immensely helpful. I dunno how tough this would be though, probably be a lot of manual effort involved I would imagine.

You have no idea. Plus the hierarchy would be difficult to navigate. Not to mention i don't think child boards can have child boards.

Can't do the silver stars. Could give you two rows of blue stars?

I'll take it.  Curious if you've also been given enough power to assign future moderators?

I suggest we limit avatars more by filesize than resolution.

I think 120x120 and 50kb would work well.

That's the best everyone could come up with? Bigger avatars so Jenova's Witness could show some skin ... and pickles? I guess it is not a big deal since none of the avatars are hosted on Qhimm, and I am sure 99% of us are on some sort of broadband. Be warned that anyone who abuses the avatars will have the privilege of them removed.

Adding any packages to the site requires access that I do not have, so unfortunately Google Search is a no go.

Post by: Timber on 2011-03-30 05:11:46
I would also love an improved search, the current one is horrid.

Also other problems:
When I send a PM now, it doesn't show up in 'sent messages'.
At the bottom of the main index it says "Most Online Today: 2. Most Online Ever: 2 (May 08, 2006, 08:00:28 PM)" lol
Title: Re: Open call for ideas
Post by: sl1982 on 2011-03-30 05:38:45
I cannot do anything about the search at the moment unfortunately.

Goto your profile and turn on 'Save a copy of each personal message in my sent items by default. ' under Personal Messaging.

Hmmm, yes. That has annoyed me for some time. Ill take a look into it.

Request: New maximum size for avatars.
150x150 pixels or 50 KB

I can't think of anything terribly original, except maybe FAQ maid/mods whose only responsibility is to comb through old posts, add answers to various FAQs, and then delete the old posts.  Though I don't know enough about FF7 to know how these FAQs should be organized.  This is strictly a housekeeping idea, but it would be nice to have answers to every question ever asked in a neatly organized and searchable form.
I do like this idea, but good god that is a ton of work.  There are currently exactly 8051 threads and 108,070 posts (not including completely unrelated).  There's just no way without dozens of people working on it and an extreme level of organization.

Would be helpful though... people looking for help with FFVII High Resolution Patch could be deleted, and other posts like that.  It's just too much work for very little benefit.

On a somewhat related note, I have always toyed with the idea of no longer having post counts or stars even.

Be warned that anyone who abuses the avatars will have the privilege of them removed.

They should have come up with ideas that will really help the forums, like letting you give yourself more stars.

And how does the "ignore member" option work? If it ignores all their posts on the forums, the following two scenarios are likely to result:

Scenario one:

Primus: Hey guise, how do I x?
Secundus: You can x by ying your z.
Tertius (who has Secundus on his ignore list): You can x by ying your z.

Scenario two:

Primus: Hey guise, how do I x?
Secundus (who, unbeknownst to him, is on Primus' ignore list): You can x by ying your z.
Tertius, Quartus...nsimus (aside): The question has been answered, so let's not bother repeating anything.
Primus (aside): Why is no-one answering my question? BAWWWWW!

This is is the lesser of two evils on social forums, but it seems like a bad idea on a technical one.

As for positive suggestions, I'd like to repeat the calls for a better search option (the current one is worse than useless) and a review on avatar restrictions. 100x100px and 10KB is from the days of dial-up and is no longer necessary. Instead, the focus should be on preventing obnoxius and distracting avatars rather than ones with a big filesize. Allowing avatars beyond 150x150 and long animated gifs will make threads unpleasant to read, but something like a 120x120, 20KB avatar should be fine. I'd advocate at least doubling the filesize limit (but not going beyond 50KB, so that unnecessarily long gifs can't be used) and setting a size limit of something like 120x120px or 150x150px. Anything huge would be distracting.

But wait, I have another negative suggestion! I feel the need to inb4 sigs. Signatures are the cancer that is killing the intertubes and have no function other than ego stroking and making stuff half to read because threads are walls of signature with tiny amounts of text in between. No-one ever reads them, anyway. I know that no-one has suggested sigs, but I'd like to voice my opposition to them in advance. ;D

I can't think of anything terribly original, except maybe FAQ maid/mods whose only responsibility is to comb through old posts, add answers to various FAQs, and then delete the old posts.

A meido-san? Uwaaa! Can we dress her up in a French maid outfit with nekomimi and a tail? I like this idea!

Well of course thats why I did this, just so someone suggested I have more stars.

Ignore Members: As for the ignore member function, in my opinion it should stay as it is. Some people just cannot get along.

Search Engine: Ill look into seeing what I can do to improve the one on here, within my abilities that is.

Avatars: I think 150x150 50kb is a decent maximum. Assuming an approximate amount of 10 posts per page it will be at max 500kb to load. Which should not strain anyone's internet. Can anybody test for me if a 150x150 avatar works as is, or if i need to change anything?

Signatures: I totally agree. Signatures are not needed and will not be turned on.

I'm not entirely sure signatures entirely need disabled. While I agree that sig images are pointless and signatures in general can be unwieldy, I also feel that length-limited (250 chars, perhaps?) text/link only signatures CAN be beneficial. Off the top of my head, people could link to their own mods/tools. This would be particularly handy for people whose projects are not frequently updated, as some really good stuff can get pushed back a few pages never to be seen again. If wasted screen space is really a concern, a smaller default size could also be used, and the size tag disabled.

Note: to be clear, I am absolutely not advocating or requesting signatures with images or any other stupid self-indulgent nonsense like that.

An example of a tasteful yet useful sort of signature:

My Projects:
A useful tool (#post_) | Game mod (#post_) | Another thing (#post_)
Title: Re: Open call for ideas
Post by: pyrozen on 2011-03-31 01:50:29
i agree with corvarrs suggestion for text only sigs...makes it easy to link members of from the same projects, as well as listing projects you have worked on. It makes it easy to find more work from a particular author if you like their style. Of course this could be easily negated with a better search function.....
Title: Re: Open call for ideas
Post by: sl1982 on 2011-03-31 02:16:06
*Sighs*

When I can figure out how to fix the search function I will (remember I am new at this)

As for signatures, I dont know. Here is what I forsee if enabled: Some very few members will actually have something useful there. Most will have some sort of random crap. So do we allow the crap? Do I allow signatures and then remove the ability for the people that abuse it? That is an awful lot of work for the potential gain.
Title: Re: Open call for ideas
Post by: obesebear on 2011-03-31 03:05:54
I agree with Kudistos, no signatures.  If you're looking for a certain Tool, there's only 2 pages to look through.  Mods come and go so quickly it's hard to keep track of who's doing what and is much easier to look through the first few pages of the Mods forum.

I was wondering, would it be possible to change the link of the search from http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?action=search (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?action=search) to http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=site:http%3A%2F%2Fforums.qhimm.com%2Findex.php (http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=site:http%3A%2F%2Fforums.qhimm.com%2Findex.php) ?  That way if someone clicks the search button they will immediately be linked to google where all they have to do is type in what they are looking for after the .php.   There is probably some kind of script that could be ran instead, or probably a better link to use, but my homework has left me too drained to think properly.

SL1982 There are many mods you can install to SMF Like:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1930

Not familiar with SMF layout but it should let you upload an .xml file, its just that easy. Make sure you do a cache clean up afterwards :)  Just do some searching around the CP you'll find it.

Yes, it would be great if you could just click on the word post and have it arrange the list by post count in descending order. Even better if you could click a second time and arrange them by post count in ascending order. That way, we'd be able to see who has the highest post count and therefore the biggest penis.

Furthermore maybe it could contain fan made videos and maybe links to those videos.Maybe a qhimm youtube channel could be created where tech videos or installation video guides could be put so as to help people who have a harder time with the game or want to start creating their own mods be helped out.. i wasn't quite sure if this was supposed to be posted in general discussion or here but i think it was wisest to be posted here. nevertheless, i hope you'll take my idea into consideration. :)

Of course, I was thinking of making a thread that highlights all the mods with pics, movies, links, etc so that everything can be found in one consolidated thread. I know this has been done before. But the thread that holds this information needs to be HIGHLY professional.

Also If I ever got permission from all the mod owners to do such a thing, Id want the topic to be locked because its just there to showcase all the mods and link you to them, no reply is needed.

If it isn't in place already, can you make new users (either two week old accounts or less than 30 posts or so) see a "be sure to check the FAQs/rules before posting" before they start a new topic or reply? We get a lot of pointless repeat questions.

If smf can't do it then we'll just have to live with it.

Incoming first post/

How about a link to the home page?  I've been lurking this forum for over a year and I just now saw what the home page looks like.  And this was only because I was curious enough to type "qhimm.com" in my address bar.

/Be gentle :-\

PS - On another note I'm thinking of compiling that archive of downloads.  But is it really necessary to ask for permission to post links to someone's work if they themselves posted it to "this" forum?

I'm personally in favor of text-only signatures with a character limit. Back in the days when they couldn't be disabled entirely and instead were limited to just one character, my signature was é.

However, I'm pretty sure the issue has been brought up before, and always ends with "no".

256 characters max, allowing pictures would be fine, with the option of entirely disabling them.

There is no reason for having signatures.  Feel free to make the argument you could link to important things in them, but even if you did just have helpful links, people will ignore them.   Others will fill it with things they think are funny and stupid pictures/memes, and then the forums look completely cluttered and stupid.

By all means, everyone interested in having them go ahead and post an exact depiction of what yours would be.  Who knows, maybe someone will be able to make a strong argument for them.

There's absolutely no reason to allow pictures in a signature.  But I say put them in so people could drop some helpful links that others might be interested in.

Maybe allow them and disable them for people that don't deserve it. Or allow it only for people with 100+ posts or so. Well, you see the point.

Yes, Qhimm needs a mod registry to keep all of the download links in one place.  Even after months of scouring the forum, I continue to find new treasures.
I'm trying to keep track of everything in a Bootleg Mod List (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12008.msg167686#msg167686), but it's really not satisfactory.

Most of it can be found on the wiki, specifically this page (http://wiki.qhimm.com/FF7/Technical/Customising).

Does SMF have an option to have an external link mixed in with the boards? It would make the wiki WAY easier to find, since many people go straight to the forums and many don't even know it exists. I imagine it something like this:

I suggest that an option for a 350х40 (standard bigbar res) image and a limited text support (256 symbols) should be added . Most of the funny/stupid pictures don't fit into that resolution. Images with identical resolution and allingment (centered for example) would make the forum more livelier and not cluttered. And the text would give an option to highlight usefull links or other information. I know that you work hard to make the forums clean, but it's too clean.  You should make an experiment, and only if it will be a complete failture, than you disable it again. ;D

IMHO it'll bring more life to this forums

The Wiki page is very outdated.
I unsuccessfully attempted to edit the Wiki entry.
I was unable to create an account.
Who is in charge of maintaining the FF7 Wiki?

There's no one person in charge of updating it; basically anybody with wiki access edits it when they feel like it/see a problem. If you need something changed, you're free to give me a holler by PM or in the IRC. I'm not sure who all else has wiki access, but we try to keep it relatively maintained.

You think it's outdated now, you shoulda seen it before I got to it. There were some dead links, links to years-old versions of things, tools that have been replaced with better, less-crashy ones, etc. Nowadays not everything is in there, but it's at least enough to get people playing the game properly.

If anyone can get the Wiki looking organized it's PitBrat.  He seems like an ultra organized person.  Can't wait to see the new Wiki after he tears through it.

The link to the wiki is live now. I also think pitbrat would be good to redo some of the wiki as he has everything very organized. Perhaps halkun could give him wiki access?

How about a page about the creator... like: "Qhimm: The man who gave us a roof." Or something fun like that. Just a brief bio of the man. Don't really know why I thought of that. Hell.. why not a few moderator bios in general... I like filling my head with information on people that aren't me.

Just sayin....

Please don't change the look of this forum !

Some websites are totally overloaded with user pictures/logos/signatures so you can't see the important things. And the best idea they got, make the background black and the text color dark gray. If you want to read, you must hit CTRL-A.

I like this forum, because the look is clean and simple. The colors of the background/boxes/text perfectly fit together. I am a little "color handicapped", my first computer was a Commodore 64
(blue, if you know what i mean).

OK, i know you're all great creative's who want to explain themselves with extraordinary logos
and signatures. But when one starts the others are following and everything messes up.

The most important thing in my opinion is, reading should not hurt your eyes.

I don't like signatures. They disrupt the clean look of the forum, they increase moderator workload, and I'm not convinced they're useful.

This is another bugbear of mine - what *is* it with people who make their profile name a signature? Do they assume I can't see the name to the side of their post? Do they think I'll forget it half way through? Honestly.
