Project AngelWing v3.0
Field Upscale (Steam Only)

Project AngelWing is a field upscale that uses Waifu2x and now Gigapixel with my own specific settings. It's not perfect and not everything is going to look mind blowing... But I feel it is an improvement compared to what you get out of the box. And I'm sure any errors or whatnot can be improved over time. And, of course, Esthar still isn't great. ...I don't like Esthar. But hey! Enjoy!

Update #1

Not going to lie... This took longer than it should have. But as of 11/27/18 I've updated Project AngelWing to v2.0 with Project Eden's edges. And I've tried to fix any real errors that came with it. Well...outside of some residue that I can't completely get rid of. As of now, only three areas still use v1.0 alpha channel/edges. Along with that, I've also done my best to add all the languages available on Steam with this update. (Japanese might get added in the future.)

I can't guarantee there won't be a few errors or missing hashes in the other languages. If you happen to find any, please let me know in case I might be able to fix it.

It's been almost a year since the last update... Better late than never. I've finally added Gigapixel fields for people to try out. Currently in the "testing" phase. Some lighting issues and fields will need to be fixed or improved upon. The "final" version will also have smoother edges, I hope. Time will tell. Japanese is also incomplete because I can't run that version to get the hashcodes. And I also have to thank Mcindus for helping me out with the current problem fields.

Directions:

1.   Download Tonberry v1.61 or later http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15945.0
2.   Extract Tonberry and put all of it's components into your game's directory.
3.   Extract the file provided here.
4.   Drag the texture folder provided into your game's directory.
5.   Everything else (hashmap folder/collisions/hash2map) should be placed inside the Tonberry folder that resides in your game's directory.

If the game happens to crash after installing this mod, then I recommend lowering your texture cache in the preference document that resides in the Tonberry folder. Or you can find and download the 4GB patch and use it on your game's executable. This will allow the game to use more memory than it normally would.

Optional: Mcindus was kind enough to completely rework the game's directory sign and I gotta say that I quite like it. And he did it for all languages! But in case you don't want to use it, I've left the original upscales in the textures folder. Just find "bg_hall7" and delete the folder. Then remove the "a" from the alternate one below it and you'll be good to go.

I made some screens, first with project eden and then with angelwing. Some areas really look better now (sharpened, "less pixelated").

The only "downside" i've noticed is here:

Some comparison. Eden first.
I'm not a "graphics maniac", so Eden is good enough alredy. But AngelWing DOES improve some areas imo.
They look less blurry. Maybe not the graphical improvement of the century, but it does a fine job in making FF8 look even better.

I'll look into why the lighting doesn't seem to work properly. It might only be limited to a few areas since the lighting does work in a majority of areas. Even areas in your comparison pictures for Eden/AngelWing. And yeah, AngelWing isn't an extremely vast improvement. Just a sharper image. And less glitches.

Edit: Good news. I fixed the lighting for those areas. At least, they now work for me. I'll upload a separate patch soon for it. :)

Edit 2: Actually... On second thought, they appear to have been working correctly before, too. Does anyone else have lighting issues?

Thank you. :) First pass was with no noise reduction. I only used the maximum on the second pass. Luckily, very little detail was lost from what I could tell.

This is one of the best looking upscales I've seen. I really appreciate that you've gone for a more natural look than some.

Thanks. Glad you think so. :) That was my goal from the start. If I would've went with UpRGB rather than UpPhoto, then I would've gotten what I like to call the "noodle effect". And on landscapes it's...horrible. Plus RGB mode somehow wipes away more detail when combined with noise reduction.

You're welcome. :) If there is one thing I'll commend waifu2x for is how sharp the images remain when upscaling. (Granted you don't go overboard with filtering.)

Thanks for the great work :D, i've been downloading a few mods for my FFVIII replay and you seem to have participated in a lot of them, thanks for the effort :D. I wanted to ask if its was possible that you or someone else create a torrent, since my internet is not fast enough or  stable enough to download a 1.3gb file :D The battlefield pack which was only 400mb~ took a while to download after many connection errors, any help would be appreciated :D.

Haha. Yeah... I kinda have my hand in a lot of things on here. :D And you're welcome. :) As for a torrent... I've never actually done any of that before. But I should probably look into it and learn. Especially for people with not so great internet. (My internet is questionable at times, too. :P) Because what's the point of going through all this work if not everyone can use it. So... I'll see what I can do.

You are correct. :) If you already have Eden, then AngelWing will overwrite it. I did tweak the hashmaps, though. So those matter as well. You're welcome. And thank you. I appreciate it. :)

I also need to go through the hashmaps and disable codes that cause glitches that can't be fixed and add more missing ones. So that'll be the next update.

The mod is great! the game looks great thanks to all the enhancements i've applied with all the mods and i'm ready for a replay of one of my favorite game of all time, thanks a lot for the effort you put into modding the game, this game means a lot to me and with these graphics refresh it feels new and shiny :D

Could anyone explain me how the bg is composed from an HD version of the image?
I see the png in this mod folder are splitted in many stripes/fragment but I can't get what's the logic behind it to try make my own HD BG :(

Apologies for not responding sooner. Been away on a road trip.

You need PuPu and the proper files to get the fields/backgrounds. I just combine the layers that seams match (you do this for every file), upscale those images (or however you plan to do it), use upscaled alpha channels of the same files (before you combined them) to cut out the excess and run it back through PuPu (import). I suck at explaining things. But I hope this is what you wanted to know. :P

Hello. I assume you mean to just install the mod? It should be the same for spanish as all the others. Not sure if the hashcodes will differ at all since I don't use that version.

I'd say so. It should fix a lot of issues with Eden as well as make more textures work/upscale. Of course, when my next update comes along I'll also disable any hashes that causes problems that can't be fixed by me. Those will have to be dealt with if/when a new hashing method comes along for Tonberry.

Does anyone know how to put these together? I like to keep an album of the static backgrounds and these look great but they're not in a format that I can save to a photo album. I've got the ones ripped from FFDream but they're LQ, look like garbage and I've noticed from my most recent playthrough that they're even missing some of the backgrounds from the game

The contents in this mod can't be pieced back together for viewing outside the game. At least, I don't think so. Could be wrong. You can extract the field files from your game and use PuPu to get the backgrounds in layers. Those can be put back together and upscaled the same way I did mine. Not to mention you can also get fields that aren't used in the game this way. Which is always neat to see.

This is actually how the game behaves if you don't disable the steam overlay.  Looks like you need to disable that, and then make sure hash2map and collisions are in FINAL FANTASY VIII/tonberry/  and NOT in tonberry/hashmap/

Chances are that isn't caused by the mod itself. I would test the game without any mods first just to make sure it isn't the game. Because things like that can happen when something in the game files gets corrupted or missing and needs validation from Steam.

This sounds like an error with your hashmaps.  make sure you only have one seed reborn hashmap.  not both.  also, make sure you have hash2map.csv and collisions.csv in your main /tonberry folder, and not your /hashmaps folder

I have the same problem but with the french version. but even in English it makes me the same thing.

but what I do not understand is that before I had an intel core 2 duo 4gb ram windows 7 pro with Intel Q45 / Q43 Express Chipset and all work well. now I have an intel core 2 quad 8gb ram windows 7 pro nvidia fx 1700 quadro and since then I have this probleme

I would tell you to take pictures of the pixelized areas and send it to the creator so he can correct the problem for other languages etc.   I also have a some places where the mod does not display properly and I planned to do the same thing to help

You have collisions.csv and hash2map.csv in the wrong location. they should NOT be in /tonberry/hashmap, and ONLY be in /tonberry/ -- this should fix your issues!

I know for a fact that having hash1map will cause many collisions and be a huge problem (causing many of the same issues in the screenshots above -- especially because it contains all of the old hashcodes that have either been replaced or are the same as existing ones (which will cause problems))... also, you only get hash1map by having an outdated version of tonberry.  are you sure you've updated to tonberry 2.04?

and sorry if my message seemed offensive it was not my goal i apologize :S but is often for a lot of things not here but in general. i have the impression that French does not count for much. example here in quebec, we did start having french subtitle games just with playstation 3. except of course with ubisoft seen ubisoft come from quebec ^^

Strange. It shouldn't be empty. I thought for sure I dropped everything in there. I'll fix it.

Haven't come across that issue in my testing... But, uh... I have to ask because of how your setup looks to me. Is this a cracked version of the game or an official one? If it's cracked then I can't guarantee there aren't compatibility issues and I can't help you. Not saying it is, but I feel like I need to point that out. As far as files go, everything looks right.

Edit: Actually, no. Your files aren't correct. AngelWing Spanish is just a necessary add-on. You're going to need the English AngelWing hashmap, too.

I have the two, the official and a cracked version, I've modded the cracked version cause I'm a bit clumsy when messing with folders and didn't want to break nothing in the official one

Now, I have to say I can't get spanish version working. English works though.

All my files are placed properly.

Problem seems to be related to "ProjectAngelWing_hm - Spanish.csv" due to it is working perfectly if I'm not using this file.
Besides, I can't get the directory sign working wether using english or spanish versions of the mod.

I want to say thank you for that quick reply.
However, as I said, my files are placed correctly in the proper folder, as you are saying. "hash2map" and "collisions" in the MAIN tonberry folder. That's why I can run the mod using its english version, but I'm not able to do it using spanish version.

Above screenshots are Arson's. I just quoted it because my artifacts/broken textures problem is the same.

I have "ProjectAngelwing_hm.csv". Otherwise the mod won't work even using just english version.

I have the same problem with Spanish version. The main problem are artifacts in the mirrors or other crystal objects (like lift doors, for example).

I put the mod files like this:

- Collisions.csv and has2map.csv in tonberry main folder.
- All textures folders in ...FinalFantasyVIII/texture folder
- ProjectAngelWing_hm - Spanish and ProjectAngelWing_hm in ...FinalFantasyVIII/tonberry/hasmap folder.

If I delete ProjectAngelWing_hm - Spanish, the mod works partially (the half background appears moded, and the other half appears unmoded?. And if I left only the spanish hasmap version, the problem persist and the mod doesn't work.

Thiere is an obvius error on ecmall1_22, but there are more obvius errors on rest of ecmall declarations on ProjectAngelWing_hm - Spanish.csv couse deleting them all fixes all the issues. I had generall issues with icons, status and others.

Can you please check what are wrong with those files?

Not currently. The games have different file structures, and work still needs to be done on the Remastered version before we have mod support for it beyond "simple" mods like Triple Triad that are found in a textures folder.

Regarding the Spanish version, I wanted to put the funds of the mod gum and I have used the files of this mod to work in the Spanish version.
It worked but it gave me the mistakes you talked about here, I have removed the file "ProjectAngelWing_hm - Spanish" and now it works fine, although in some funds some strange lines are seen so I will mix the angelwin funds with those of gum.

I used @JvFox recommendation and deleted the entry that is (18446744073709551615) -- THIS IS A BAD HASH CODE

Updated. People can now use field textures upscaled with Gigapixel. Currently in the "testing" phase and hoping to have a finalized version in the future with smoother edges. Current version will have a few lighting issues and problems fields which will hopefully be sorted out soon. Will also be implemented into the remaster if and when possible. ...Think that's all.

For some reason Gigapixel hates text and numbers. I'm checking to see how I can improve that. Sadly that was one of the things waifu2x did better.

Isn't simpler to mix some parts with text from the waifu2x and photoshop only the texts/signs/numbers to the gigapixel pictures?

I still haven't downloaded as I'm waiting for the remaster version. Are the files in .png or any image format? If so I could help manually editing.
