Return to a Midgar like you’ve never seen before, in this faithfully remastered graphics mod for Final Fantasy VII (PC). The Remako HD Graphics Mod features improved graphics with 4x the resolution of the original. This was accomplished by using state-of-the-art neural networks to upscale the game’s graphics.

The mod improves the quality of among other things the pre-rendered backgrounds, battle, world textures, as well as the game’s full-motion videos (FMVs). Remako is also compatible with many other mods, such as The Reunion (R03C) or 3D model mods, for the ultimate Final Fantasy 7 experience.

Remako Mod is compatible with all PC versions of FF7: the CD original, the Square Enix Store version, and the Steam release.

Installation Guide

Getting Final Fantasy 7 ready for mods requires several steps. That's why I made this helpful install guide. I recommend everyone use it, even those who played the beta (as there have been some changes).

There are a few people working on updating Aali's dll - and I am also going to be using my own version for Reunion R06.  I can always add some of their fixes to my own project and I'll ask that jpeg be supported. Do you think it would be useful to have high quality jpegs given the difference in file size?

I tried the mod in about 30 screens at diffrent game positions so here's my impressions:
-Seems you have used my 4xcut tool to convert the background (would be cool to say it in the informations), as i said in this tool, i'll release a better version after i release my own ff7 pack, so all optimisation how can be included in the soft will be added/corrected.
-Seems you don't run through the game for bug hunting, almost all light pixel's bug (chorace for exemple) and black pixels (gon_i for exemple) witch aren't corrected in my released tool are showing ingame
-The upscale tool you used seems to produce good results on high quality background (like the gon_i) but seems to add "fake texture" so on textured "natural' stuff (dust, wood floor) the render seems great, but if you look at other elements the "human works" (bottle, fabric, boxes, painting...) it's look "muddy" or "fleecy" or "no right" (don't know to say this impression in english)
-The upscale tool you used seems to produce bad results on low quality background (like the blin ones) the results are grainy and kind of blurry just like if you're drawing a picture on a moving paper.
-because of the inconsistency of the upscale tool between screens elements types, some screens (like the farm one) have some elements eavily textured (the grass) and some other blurry (the house roof) at the same time

So to my mind, it's great you tryed this tool witch seems promising in some textures types, but if don't optimise the filtering, the game will be realy inconsistent from one screen to another and (to my mind) it will ruin your works because the "bad" screen will look even badder after a "good" screen.

Don't take it the bad way, it's only my opinion, i hope it can help you improve your works

The jpeg would be usefull for slow internet connexions but how about the transparency ?
I've read somewhere (if i remember) that your own corrected aali driver will be steam and 1.02english exe only, the french exe have be moded at some point for a full retranslation (with some font modification too so can't use the english exe for a full retranslation) so i realy hoppe you can relase a 1.02fr compliant driver or at least share your works so maybe another devel can adapt it (not me i can't understand this enough T_T).

Reunion R06 will allow for all versions to be used with the English 1.02 ;)  I've even added in the ability for all exe text to be pulled from external text file. No exe editing is needed - all external.  In other words, we won't have issues like incompatibility between versions anymore.

Some very good points. I really appreciate the feedback.

It's very much an early beta release, and as I mention a few times on my site it has not been 100% tested yet. I'm just glad something of this project is out there. That keeps me motivated to stay on it and make it better over time. So this beta release now and then polishing it for a bug/graphical problem free v1.0.

Very good specific remarks. I'm not yet happy with blin and such either. Now that the basework is down, I'm going to go through all the scenes and see which needs tweaking. Not all settings work for all types of backgrounds.

I mentioned you and 4xcut on the credits page of my site, but that's easy to miss. So I added a credits list to this thread's OP as well. I'm very grateful for you mod. Made the whole process a lot easier!

Great stuff ! but how about the modified font ?

This needs to be taken to The Reunion thread really... but font changes can be either png or tex - manual edits.  Most languages already have font chars that are on the default map.  Come to Reunion thread and advise if this is not the case.

But.. what's the best way to install this if I already installed the latest version of Reunion?
Do I still need to mess with 7th Heaven? I dunno if I can make that + my current version of FF7 with Reunion work, do I have to uninstall Reunion?

Nah, you can install 7th Heaven over the reunion. Just makee a backup of ff7.exe, if you install 7th Heaven with the gamesconverter and replace the the ff7.exe with the bacjul one. In ff7opengl.cfg you must change modpath = Reunion to modpath = textures and moving the content from the Reunion folder to the textures folder.

Hi firstly thanks for this awesome mod,but I am having some trouble getting everything working.

I have followed the guide but when the game starts I get a red error message that says "libPNG erro not a PNG file". Once the intro CGI is over I just see the normal backgrounds.

Im lauching through 7tth heaven and the remako mod is listed as being found.

They kind of already did join forces since captrobau is using satsuki's 4xcut tool which is optimizing the layering of the field scenes. The only other difference in this mod is the upscale method. I'm actually making my own pack as well using gigapixel but I am using additional work on top of that to clean up the image even more. And then there is the custom redone fields which you can find in the Team Avalanche section of the forum. So there will be lots of options. It definitely could be cool if someone goes through and takes the best from each field but until satsuki releases his updated 4xcut it won't be worth it as all of the packs will need to be optimized more either way until then.

Each IA upscale method need to be "mastered" to be realy effective, it's a long "try and die" process.
Right now i'm happy about with all screen of my pack (about 10 to 15 are not realy as a want, but gigapixel won't do a better job because these are realy low quality background and it seems that gigapixel don't do a great job with it).
I'm not hidding my works, i answered anyone how want help to deal with it but i want to do my own pack.
I tryed about 50 screen of this pack across the game to see the power of gigapixel but on each single screen i prefer the render of my current method, it's only a personnal preference.

People will be free to do choose one or another once both will be released... or a mix of both pack and release a mixed pack ^^

Incredible work. Would it be possible to apply this process to the textures in the 3D battle screens? I think it has already been done for the world map with another algorithm, but I can't find it atm (a link would be greatly appreciated). If these three are done (backgrounds, world map, battle maps), that's the best version (graphically) we could hope to have. Only thing we'd be missing is applying the same algorithm and corrections to the FMVs, but I imagine that would be very, very tedious to do (15 images per second... and a lot of seconds to rework).

My final pack will have game background (with the "char" part for 3d stuff of the fields), battle background and world map.
All filtering done, verification on its way.
FMV don't be realy long to process (i've done it once) about 48h to 72h computing, but i need to found an efficiant way to clean up the spaciotemporal noise without kill the details, and that'll take lots of time

I am also working on a new pack for Echo-S and it is being beta tested now by our team and I know when Satsuki releases his pack that remako won't be the definite pack. Not to say any pack is better then the other but if you want to keep 7th heaven as updated as possible then I'm guessing it will have 3 new packs which will overwrite the 3 you have now :)

Everything's beautiful. I did find one bug in my playthrough (I saved afterwards, so unfortunately no screenshot) at the gold saucer. The little cart thing you get in to go sight seeing around the saucer and to go on the date in is broken up into 4 equal sections. the top right and bottom left are fine, but the top left and bottom right are really super dark... At least I think that was caused by your mod, if not, sorry.

Edit: Had to go back for the keystone, so I was able to grab you a screenshot while I was there... Actually, now that I'm really looking at it, it doesn't look like it's been enhanced, either.

Please do, I like it a lot. You've done some great stuff with your mod. As you've said, when all the work has been done we should look at a way to give the community two great options/a combo of both. When everything is still in development, this is too hard to judge.

As soon as you release the field, battle, and world textures together, I will add them to the 7H Catalog. I believe this is superior to all prior texture packs, so I may just replace them all with Remako HD as the only definitive texture pack to download.

I suggest that when Satsuki's and my mod are in a non-beta state, we should look at which mod (or combination of mods) would be the best to add to the 7H Catalog. There's still a lot of work to be done and I don't feel we're at a point yet that you can say that just Remako should be the one to go in.

I have not tried it with 7th 1.52. Is there a reason why you haven't upgraded to 1.54?

Also I am not a fan of blatantly advertising in someone else's thread but it just seems you didn't even notice the new pack that was posted. So obviously no disrespect to CaptRobau. We are all just trying to make the game better :)

I've been playing the game with Remako installed to see how the upscaled backgrounds would look in-game, and I have to say, while some backgrounds may not look as good as they could, most of them look very very cool, especially surfaces made out of metal or wood, those are jaw-dropping.

I wanted to mention that I don't know if this is just me, or if it is a problem that you are already aware of, but some effects are not displayed correctly, like the waterfall in Aerith's house, god rays in North Corel, the lifestream fountain in mount Nibel or the fires in the fire cavern in Wutai, just to name a few.

Anyway, keep up the good work. It truly looks amazing.

This is the most exciting work in years! - Is there any chance you could release a PNG version? I have extensively modded FF7 using Bootleg and I don't want to lose all the work that went into it by fresh installing with 7th Heaven. I know that the file sizes are probably pretty large, but I can't enjoy this gem without direct access to the PNG's. I may not be the only person whose uncomfortable making the switch to 7th Heaven and a PNG release would be so appreciated, I can't even express it with words. Even if it had to be a multi-part download that would be fantastic! Either way, thank you for this work, it is incredible!

Okay Captain, I see that you uploaded all the images to drive as JPEGs. I downloaded them all, but I can't do anything with them on my Bootleg install since my field folder contains all PNG's that need that strange cut up image format with different naming for each folder and image. Is there any work around for using this amazing mod with bootleg? Also are the JPEGs you posted to drive of lesser quality than the background images in your mod? All 3,500+ images that I downloaded off your drive only take up approximately 750MB and your .iro file for the mod is almost 4 Gigs. I have some competence with modding games, but I need some tips from you or anyone else on how to maybe get this working with bootlegs file format.

I downloaded them all, but I can't do anything with them on my Bootleg install since my field folder contains all PNG's that need that strange cut up image format with different naming for each folder and image. Is there any work around for using this amazing mod with bootleg? Also are the JPEGs you posted to drive of lesser quality than the background images in your mod? All 3,500+ images that I downloaded off your drive only take up approximately 750MB and your .iro file for the mod is almost 4 Gigs. I'm not familiar with how Bootleg does things, but you can use 7th Heaven to unpack iro files. Those contain all the raw png image files, which you could then load up in Bootleg (if I understand correctly what you want). You don't need to use 7th heaven for any mod managing, just for unpacking the iro files as it is a feature of that program as well.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. I didn't know you could use 7th Heaven just to unpack the iro without having it touch your game files. After unpacking with 7th Heaven it's easily usable with Bootleg. Thanks so much!

No support for the vanilla steam version. Sorry. While 7H isn't really needed for this mod, Aali's driver is and it only works with the '98 version.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. I didn't know you could use 7th Heaven just to unpack the iro without having it touch your game files. After unpacking with 7th Heaven it's easily usable with Bootleg. Thanks so much!

No support for the vanilla steam version. Sorry. While 7H isn't really needed for this mod, Aali's driver is and it only works with the '98 version.

It could be that you have a corrupted file. You can check if it is the correct file by checking its checksum. You can download a free, lightweight tool for that here:

The checksum of the .iro should be 8317FA310A0C1EDEE0FA76103A2F6468. If it's not that, redownload the mod.

I could bring it to work via batch, but I need a bit time to set it properly up. Though, I don't think it will solve the issues which people have with 7H, because they still need to downpatch the game and there is usually the biggest problem.

Finally got it to work. I tried 2 other download links. I think it has something to do with WinRAR. The link that gives the .iro without the need to unzip worked fine.
Sooooo now that I got to try it, it's really really good. I was using [Echo-S] OGFields - Complete Field Replacement till I got Remako to work and I must say your mod is my favorite. Echo-S looks like waterpaint, it's just another style, not saying it's bad.
First time I ever play with mods and this combined with the updated models comes close to the graphical update I've wanted for a while. Again great work, good job.

Hi FF7 Community,
I hope you can help me get the Remako HD Mod running.
I know mods from Skyrim but in FF7 I am still inexperienced. I'm currently using the mod tool 7thHeaven for the first time. The mods that I took through the manager work, like Battle_Models_Characters_2.1 and others.
Only Remako_HD_Graphics_Mod_BETA_0.1 seems to be ignored. I did not install The_Reuinion and the game is started in the manager via FF7.exe. I already rebooted the computer several times. But the mod just doesn't work.
Already several times I started the game again but the mod is not started.
I have already set Remako to different levels in the Load Order, but without success.

That's the setting I had before.
I've read in several places that the_reunion and Remako don't harmonize so well.
That's why I deactivated it, although the menu looks much better with reunion.
Do you guys have any other suggestions how I can get Remako to work?

These are only background files, so it shouldn't interference with Menu Overhaul files from The Reunion. I haven't taken a look at the files in Remako yet, so I'll do that tonight and compare.

I noticed in your description you were focusing on field backgrounds because the battle backgrounds are low res.  That's a very good thing, because the battle backgrounds have already been recreated by hand in high res with much love and attention by Uprisen in the Avalance Arisen mod.

On your blog I saw that you wanted to try to do the videos, too, but the were very noisy to begin with.
A very good denoiser is bm3d (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block-matching_and_3D_filtering). There is a Vapoursynth implementation that works reasonably fast as the resolution is so small ;) .
A not at all tuned example with nearly standard settings:

Windows 10 and 8, worst issues ever for older games, especially downgraded, older games.. Heck, some games are still troublesome and totally bugged on 7..

But with a straightforward method the whole launcher and login strawberries can be replaced. I think that's what the next reunion version will do. I think I get you, it was a team effort to crack it, they then even stole the work done to fix the game, gave no credit to anyone, and folks would rather not deal with it further after their response.

I don't care really about achievements, I just wish I didn't need so much RAM to run a lot of mods (Thankfully I have 32GB's).. lol Good news to hear, though for those who like that sort of thing.

So they had access to code nobody else except Aali had his hands on. Well the past is the past and now is now, this is no excuse that 7H doesn't work with the re-release, because the driver isn't a real dependency for it, only for the texture replacement. Well, actually the re-release can be moded with umod (the last version of textmod) or even Kaladiens tools. But the texture output is full with garbage. So I didn't look further into these tools.

Yeah, I had no choice but to get into 7th Heaven's setup or I was never going to see better field maps.  I honestly don't care about who's getting or not getting paid, it's nothing but capitalist barriers between my purchase and proper modding enhancements.  If everyone was working together without competition to ensure the best experience was an option instead, this wouldn't be such a mess..

I have bought this game since the PSX days on it's release date day, continuing to re-buy it over and over, again, and again as I moved and lived life..

I have the PC 4 disk version, Steam's, and PSX phys copies even now..

Square is not Square, it is a conglomerate company now, and they should have just made the PC version open sourced at this old age for modders and let it be.

The files doesn't go into the flevel.lgp. it needs the texture replacement of Aali's DLL, hence why there is a recommendation for the Steam game to downgrade it.

It's an aali driver bug for black section, nothing you can do so far.
it's not enhanced because the "char" files haven't be filtered in is pack

Your great work on that /char folder functions in all field background mods, however, you are right, this glitch is just with aali, in all versions.

Thanks for this update but i've tried it and it's always the same than before, not your fault, but gigapixel is not designed for processing this type of pictures so long story short :
-The quality is very unconsistant between files and also across a single scene
-The texture are messed up with gigapixel as it's using a database of texture so the texture used (mainly for rocks, grass,.. all "natural" elements) are not at all the same as in the original game design
-The "straight lines" desing as in buildings or houses are messed up with lost of blurry noise
-Most of the low quality source fields are overfiltered so it's realy blurry
-Lots of chromatic aberations

Also you don't have done a playthrough of the game so there's lots lighting bugs and no optimised part, for me it's not realy a 1.0 version but a beta+.
You realy should have go for esrgan or sfgan your results would have been realy better (for me better, is more natural, constant and close to original design)

To my mind my pack and the one from Manakaiser (witch is WIP) are clearly the bests choise right now and i think once the one from Manakaiser will be final it will be better than mine.

Sorry to be hard in my observations but as you relased the first an "IA" pack, it's watched by other forum and direct users, and to my mind they must know that there's alternatives...

Thanks for this update but i've tried it and it's always the same than before, not your fault, but gigapixel is not designed for processing this type of pictures so long story short :
-The quality is very unconsistant between files and also across a single scene
-The texture are messed up with gigapixel as it's using a database of texture so the texture used (mainly for rocks, grass,.. all "natural" elements) are not at all the same as in the original game design
-The "straight lines" desing as in buildings or houses are messed up with lost of blurry noise
-Most of the low quality source fields are overfiltered so it's realy blurry
-Lots of chromatic aberations

Also you don't have done a playthrough of the game so there's lots lighting bugs and no optimised part, for me it's not realy a 1.0 version but a beta+.
You realy should have go for esrgan or sfgan your results would have been realy better (for me better, is more natural, constant and close to original design)

To my mind my pack and the one from Manakaiser (witch is WIP) are clearly the bests choise right now and i think once the one from Manakaiser will be final it will be better than mine.

I think many of Satsuki's observations/criticisms are spot on, but I don't think they make one style inherently better than the other. Ultimately, everything boils down to personal preference, and clearly preferences go both ways for whatever myriad of reasons people come up with.

Personally, I agree that Remako is often too blurry/rough/noisy in places, but I think it looks more natural overall. Satsuki's has far more polish, sharpness, and accuracy, but when I look over all its screenshots it can look a little too smooth or too sharp in places, which feels unnatural.

I guess my main point is that both of these projects are amazing, like 1000% better than the original textures, and any flaws that you can find in either are incredibly trivial and insignificant compared to the massively pixellated textures we're used to.

edit: Actually after using both for a few hours, I gotta say Satsuki's is much better overall, especially the movies.

The world upscale pack has the same transparency issues as satsuki's: the Chocobo's dust trail when it runs and the Highwind's exhaust smoke look weird in comparison to the original version. Everything else looks pretty good though!

I have some problem on install the battle texture, I’m try in any way but can’t load these ones. I’ve unpacked the .iro files into the mod folder/texture and everything else work well.
I’ve try on my already modded ffvii (reunion .03, hard mode, magic texture, 60fps battle) and with a clean install to but not fixed it.
Really need some advice. TNX.

Well, I downloaded it and took the field .iro apart for the field mod and the minigame bits are definitely improvement over the community mods versions and I'm going to try them together and see if yours will override just those little bitty changes on top..

I'm not messing with anything else, but I definitely see how important it is to have all of the field mods, and check updates, because they all can have some areas looking better than another.

Also, definitely can already see some /char folder improvements here and there..

As I had originally said, I think we all need to try to put together some mixes for the community. I'm seeing little things here and there in about all of them that could be shared together..

Also, thanks for all the work you've put into this project CaptRobau.

Thats actually not the reason. The waterfall animation cannot be animated under any circumstance through palmer generated (banded/cut) field files. Even if you export the waterfall, dont touch it and reimport it the animation is lost. Assumingly because it is generated through palette cycling or a similar technique that is being interfered with by the way external textures are injected. Doesnt really matter why, just thought id mention it.

As this pack use my tool for cutting and as my tool with default setting deletes those files (and the da-tio cave flammes too) thoses Fx won't be filtered but won't bug ^^

The mask in mds7_w2 is messed up and parts lattice fence are not correctly visible when a 3D object is behind it.

Your movies are generally great quality. Even better than satsuki's.

But some movies like funeral, boogdemo, boogdown, boogstar, boogup, sqlogo are arguably worse than satsuki's.

phoenix movie has sound issues that you should fix
gold1 has chipping sound around 00:07- 00:09

Great work though and I'm using a mix of yours and satsuki movies.

What do y’all use (and in what configuration) for scanlines or a dot mask in combination with the upscaled backgrounds (remako/satsuki’s/manakaiser’s)? Seems like an excellent combination indeed!
I only know of Reshade’s scanline option; i have no idea where to find a dot mask, searched mds7_w2 for clues but didn’t find anything.

Sadly I could play the game with dotmask only on epsexe with Pete's opengl plugin. For pc I haven't seen this feature.

Thank you. I looked through the fmvs for issues, but it's easy to miss the forest for the trees with bugs. You kinda stop hearing what everything is supposed to sound sometimes.

I've followed the instructions on the Remako site, I even made a clean install of FFVII on Steam to be on the safe side, but it doesn't work. The game starts up as normal and there are no changes other than the movies being in better quality (since the original files themselves have been replaced, that's inevitable). I've also installed other mods like ones that change the character models and they're not showing up either. All mods have been activated, it's not like I just installed them and forgot to activate them which I'd guess might be one obvious cause. The game isn't installed in program files, I've followed the load order guide on this site.

Edit: I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the FF7 converter. Now when I try to do it, it says "could not find any languages". I've copy-pasted the directory and put speech marks around it, so I'm not sure what's wrong with that. When I first ran the program it apparently worked without errors, but maybe there was an error it didn't detect/display, and the converter didn't work in the first place (although it did ostensibly work, taking me to the config page).

Edit: The saga continues. Another clean install, got it working this time. The Remako upgraded backgrounds worked as did the improved field models. Then the game crashed upon loading Barret's initial dialogue to Cloud on the train platform (well that's what I assume anyway, it had Barret looking at Cloud then the game froze). Here's the log.

With what we currently have, it is. After this fully releases, if something new comes along that uses this same method (or better), then it will be added. The older mods will need to be retired to free up the limited storage space.

I can provide hosting space, for free of course, if it means maintaining choice for the community.

There will be 3 choices in Catalog 3.0 using AI enhanced texture packs, so there isn't a change in choices. Their quality is superior to older methods, so it's not worth keeping around options no one will use.

Hi, sorry forgot about this thread. I do have plans for a Remako v1.1 version, with some fixes and new features. Want it finished in 2019, but don't know when exactly. One of these coming weeks I'll probably look myself in with FF7 one more time to get the new update out.

Sadly, I've heard reports that a modded FF7 can't run well on integrated graphics. I don't want you to spend money on the game without a firm guarantee that it will work. If someone has more data regarding your setup and Remako, I'd be happy to have my statement disproven.

Thanks for the reply. That's kind of what I expected. Would have been nice for the faster battles if nothing else but I don't want to buy a game that won't run on my computer. I had kind of hoped that it would handle the neural-improved backgrounds because they're static images but I really have no idea how it works.

Even if you prefer one mod over the other, or you don't agree with decisions made, it's a bit rude to belittle modders like this in their own thread. Remako isn't perfect. But ultimately it's up to the users to pick which mod works for them.

Here's a hint... when someone just slaps stuff on their blog and says "Don't come to me with your problems, bother these other people instead," not only am I'm going to call them out on it, I'm sure as hell not going to encourage people to donate to them.
