General discussion / Re: How much VRAM you need...
« on: 2013-06-02 18:28:36 »
The game will run for a time on less than 512MB of VRAM.  There is a memory leak in the OpenGL driver, so the less ram, the quicker to crash.  The new textures require a significant amount of VRAM.  For integrated graphics cards, avoid installing the field and battle textures.  Intel HD GPU's struggle to run a fully modified FF7.  These cards have varying amounts of VRAM available depending on the system.  Results will vary.

You must first identify the exact texture name expected by the game engine.

This site is a good starting reference:

LGP File Listing                                Various         All Files Documented                          INFO

You might also enable the show missing textures option in ff7_opengl.cfg.
# show every failed attempt at loading a .png texture
show_missing_textures = yes

Then go through the app.log and locate the texture file names.

Use software like img2tex to convert the .png's into the correct format.

Use an LGP tool to place the new textures into the .lgp files.

After Bootleg runs, all of the information is stored in the BFI.ini file.

What type of GPU do you have installed?
The game is using a software renderer.

You need to force the game to use the GPU.

Q:I'm experiencing black screens, tearing, stuttering and out of memory errors.
A:Bootleg is not compatible with Intel graphics cards.  If you are using a laptop with a Radeon/NVidia card and an Intel CPU, the Intel GPU is most likely the default video card.
The game uses the default video card which is most likely the Intel GPU.
Check in the app.log to identify which GPU FF7 is using.
To force FF7 to run on the Radeon/NVidia GPU, go into the graphics settings and "add" the file/app, "FF7.exe," to run on the improved performance processor.

Troubleshooting / Re: Bootleg bugs and feedback
« on: 2013-03-21 22:34:26 »
Thank you for the detailed critique.  Those are some great ideas.
You're right, this started out as a simple first time learning exercise and grew into a monster.
There was really no plan or outline for Bootleg, so it's just cobbled together.
The mess is compounded by mods that come and go and change frequently.
Shucks, I wish mod makers created the mods with Bootleg in mind.
I have to accommodate all of the funky filenames and varied installers.

I'll definitely use your critique as a guide for improving the next version.
Your suggestion for maintaining one list of mods and checking for the files before installation is a priority.
I have a lot of work to do.

Don't use the Grimmy's Yuffie battle model.  It is broken.
I'm not sure it that is causing your crash, but it is responsible for some of the errors in your app.log.

General discussion / Re: Resolution and Fullscreen issue.
« on: 2013-02-21 04:05:46 »
That's a very unusual resolution.
Are you sure your monitor supports it?

Maybe 1920x1080 would work.

Thanks, Kompass63!
I did have an old German translation and only a few of the hex edits.
I was already using DLPB's hextedit to change the EXE, but I didn't have the additional key edits.

I really screwed up the language conversion in 040.
I hope I can recruit someone to test these changes when using the CD-ROM version of FF7.

The memory leak is an issue with the OpenGL driver.  Hopefully we'll receive a new version that fixes the problem.

The German menu text is radically different from the English text.  It just doesn't fit into the English executable.  I've updated the German translation since 040.  I don't read German, so I'm not even able to test the results.

There is a torrent file containing the Bootleg executable.  The file is too large for most free file hosts.  Google drive is the best solution I've found so far.  Are you downloading the file from outside of the US?

If you could send me a copy of the lastused.bp file and the save game, I'll investigate this problem.

It's the ff7music.ini files that are important.
Back up ff7music.ini in a safe place.
Run the ff7music installer.
Then copy the backed up ff7music.ini file into the game folder in these 3 places:
  .\ficedula\
  .\ff7music\
  .\ff7music\ficedula\

Copy and overwrite ff7music.ini into all 3 folders so that ff7music.exe is sure to find it.

This will ensure that you keep all of the Bootleg soundtrack options.

The music doesn't start until after the first battle.

If you install ff7music over an already modified game, then you'll lose the additional soundtrack options.
You should preserve the 3 Bootleg ff7music.ini files located in 3 folders within the game folder.

There is a good chance the disconnecting from the internet will cause ff7music 1.51.13 to fail.
Use ff7music 1.51.12 instead.  It has far fewer bugs and doesn't require an internet connection.

I'm not sure what changed in Windows 7 a few months back, but after some updates I've had all sorts of problems with Windows switching the audio output device.  Even though the default sound device is set correctly, Windows sometimes chooses to use a different output device.  This happens a lot when I'm using Media Player and watching YouTube videos at the same time.  I can usually fix it by closing everything and toggling the default device back and forth.  Rebooting does pretty much the same thing.

Uncheck the option to show missing textures.

The tutorial at the beginning of this thread explains how to fix the blinking heads.
Many of the models don't implement blinking correctly.
The fix prevents them from blinking at all.

Are you talking about transparent parts of models during cut scenes?
That is an issue related to the model and is not easily fixed without rebuilding the whole model.

19
Where did you install the game?
Don't install to a system folder.
System folder such as Program Files and Desktop will not work.

Did you have a headset or some other sound device plugged in previously?

Q:Why is there no sound in the game?  Why is the music playing from a different sound device than the game sounds?
A:You need to configure the sound and/or MIDI device.
  Run .\FF7Config.exe as Administrator
In the SOUND tab, select the 'Sound Driver'
In the MIDI tab, select the 'MIDI Driver' and the 'MIDI Data'
Click OK to save the settings
  Open the Volume Mixer
Adjust the volume for the playback device, applications and FF7 executable

Please help.

Bootleg works with the 2012 ReRelease.

Bootleg 040 has a bug that prevents it from correctly installing on non-US CD-ROM versions of FF7.
This bug is fixed for a future release.
If anyone is willing to test the fix on a non-US CD-ROM version of FF7, please contact me.

An undo feature would require another 2GB to 9GB of disc space.
I really don't want Bootleg to require 50GB during installation!

I recommend creating an image of a fresh FF7 installation before running Bootleg.
Use the Create Image option found in the File menu of BFE.

Then you can set BFE to use the image every time you run Bootleg.
Bootleg will restore the fresh, vanilla image and then apply the mods while preserving the keyboard configuration and save games.

General discussion / Re: Just bought FF7.. help please.

It should install again without a problem.
As long as you don't modify the registry, it remains activated.

Once you install the game, make a backup of the install folder.
It won't work on another computer or if you reinstall Windows, but it's a quick way to recover from a botched mod.
