Bump.

Episode XIII and XIV uploaded.  Episode XIV is our Season 1 (Disc 1) finale and involves the entire Sorceress Assassination mission.  We're very proud of how it turned out! We just got our Young Ellone casted so now it's on to Winhill!

Monthly Bump.  Episode XII posted.

Next up will be Tomb of the Unknown King and fighting the Brothers.  The 2 other dubs on Youtube that made it this far (Shudo's FF8 Voices, and 'VideogameNostalgia')  skipped over the Tomb so we'll be the first to dub it.  Look forward to it!

Episode X and XI posted.  We've now passed the second Laguna Dream sequence (Laguna & Co also took down Diablos).

Next episode we meet Irvine and head off to Deling City.  We're moving right along...we hope to be done with Disc 1 by mid-summer.

Monthly Bump.

Episode IX released. This was quite the undertaking compared to our previous episodes.  Longest episode yet (32 minutes), also contains nearly the entire cast plus a swath of NPCs...

...Oh and we're the first fandub where Adel is voiced....yup, Adel's presence is in this episode ;).

Monthly bump.

Our pace has slowed a bit (personal issues with some of the cast, and technical issues with Youtube copyright strikes) but Episode VIII released today.  This is the episode where Squall runs into Rinoa again after the party/ball, plus the mission on President Deling's train!

Episode IX (Timber Part 2) isn't in post yet but we're currently recording it.  Hope to have it out sometime this month.  Thanks to all the fans of the project who've supported us and we hope to keep on keeping on.

There are eleven FFVIII "fandubs" that I'm aware of on Youtube that have made serious efforts toward fandubbing the entire game this past decade.  Only two have actually succeeded in getting to Disc 2 (One by a channel called VideogameNostalgia, the other being the aforementioned "FF8Voices") and no one has made it to Disc 3...yet.  But there is one active attempt of the full series running currently.  We've been going since November '16 and we expect to reach FH by year's end if all continues to go swimmingly. Episode VII (Laguna Dream #1) is currently in post and should be out in a couple days.

On a more exciting note, many here might be happy to know that FF8Voices has officially rebooted their series as of 4 days ago with the opening sequence.  I get the impression Rupert Scarr (Squall VA) is spearheading this round as opposed to Amber.

Aside from that there are two other really good fandubs out there that I'd recommend checking out.  One is by the husband-wife couple of Aussieroth and BlackTaintedHeart who met through fandubbing (I lovingly call theirs the "Aussie dub".  Their "Julia" scene was really well done and does a superb job of getting outside the game script).  This one has also been around for awhile (2010ish?) and is technically dead, but there were some honest efforts to try and revive it last year.

The other is a newer, lesser known fandub (but also dead) by a "Hinomiyaguratatomato".  I like to refer to this one as the "Tomato dub".

Another question that just occurred to me; Will the audio files from the project be swappable via an audio folder?   Like, if someone wanted to painstakingly record and replace the Zell files with their own voice (not sure why they'd want to though; Senorcape is legit), would they be able to do so?

I'm glad the Dollet transport scenes are ahead in the polls. I hope that wins. We just passed that point in our fandub and I've found it's one of the best scenes on disc 1 to really get a sense of the strength of your voice cast since it features the 4 main cast members with the widest personality ranges (Squall, Zell, Seifer, Quistis) and let's us see the interplay between them with some highly emotive lines.  Squall brooding over Ellone, Zell and Seifer both swinging for the fences with their over the top personalities and Quistis shooting for each pole, both showing her sweet side for Squall and yelling at the other two for being so obnoxious.

Episode III is out.  This one took longer than we expected due to T-Giving and some various issues.  We're pretty proud of this one; it features the first part of the Dollet mission.

Lines for Episode IV are all recorded and is currently in post.  Hopefully it'll be up later this week...for real this time.

I'm admittedly not the director, I voice Seifer and Kiros and do a bit of audio work/QC/promoting.  Our co-directors were having similar difficulty in the beginning finding people who wanted to do it. They had been advertising mainly on Youtube, DeviantArt and their own warm networks and weren't getting much response. I suggested using a fandub casting call website like behindthevoiceactors.com or castingcall.club .  They did, and got a lot more hits.

Hello all,

I hope you don't mind if I take this opportunity to promote an FF8 fandub project that's finally come to fruition.  We had over 150 auditions submitted and a full cast of roughly 25 strong, 2 directors and 2-3 writers. We're determined to be the first fandub to make it all the way to the end while maintaining a full cast and high quality standards. We invite you to check it out!

I noticed you updated the main post for the newly casted major roles.  Have you also already cast all minor roles as well (Zone, Watts, Julia, Ellone, Biggs Wedge, etc.)?

Also, love the sound effects at the end of your latest update, gives more depth to the voice acting and better connects it back to the game we all know and love.

Totally agree...That last demo was amazing with its use of soundstage, acoustic adjustments, sound effects and whatnot.  I've sent in some auditions for this over the past couple months, and I must say that whether I'm selected or not, this is going to be an exciting project to continue to watch unfold, and ultimately play.

TL;DR - After watching some notable fandubs, I'm looking forward to what this project can do from an acting perspective that the original script failed to portray.

But to elaborate on your point, what I've only recently started looking forward to more than anything else is seeing the more natural and modern take on what was originally kind of a flimsy script by the makers.  And even more, getting to see what this batch of quality actors will be able to coax from it.  I've been watching FF8 Voices by Shudo Ranmaru, and there's a scene during the Sorceress Assassination Arc at the end of Disc 1 where Rinoa takes it upon herself to neutralize the sorceress with the Odine Bangle.  This scene up until where Edea kills Deling and Squall saves Rinoa from Edea wasn't a particularly notable scene from what I remember in the game.  But it's supposed to be.  This scene was meant to give us more insight into Rinoa's character...she was supposed to be portrayed as naive and even a bit oversensitive (as are Watts and Zone) and we are supposed to see her attempting to prove and change herself, only to realize that she needs other people.   She can't do it alone.  "I was really, REALLY scared Squall....I couldn't fight alone". Which is then supposed to tie back to Squall and him being "alone" without "Ellone" and other nodes in this overarching theme.

Unfortunately the storyboard focuses too much on Squall in this section, and the translation (and script itself) is weak, and it becomes more about us saving her from her stupidity than it is about learning more about her character.  I remember her coming off as little more than annoying in the scene after she wakes up from Edea's spell....when in reality we're supposed to leave that scene with a better appreciation for her.  This is something I learned from the extraordinary acting that came from Amber's (Shudo's) team.  You hear her determination as she's hoisting herself up the boxes into the presidential palace, you hear the slowly welling fear as she's introducing herself to the sorceress, and you hear the sudden shock of terror when her arm starts moving by itself as she's lifted off the ground.  It's a great series, I recommend checking it out as we wait the long wait for this massive undertaking to slowly materialize. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBF9FFD88DF31A580

And that's what I'm looking forward to....the cast bringing a new level of life out of this game that was stifled by the limits of the poor writing and localization.  And based on the demos/trailers we've seen so far, I think we can expect something magical from this.

Watched all 5-6ish hours of your Disc 1 testing on Twitch.  Adrian (your Quistis VA) is freaking amazing!  I've listened to tons of her audition samples while lurking on BTVA, though this is the first project I've seen her talent in performance.

Glad to see Qhimm up and running again! And also glad that this mod has been modified for a Steam release... but I was wondering what's the deal with all the options?

Why are there so many different versions of the music? I take it that it's not as clearcut as FF7? (ie. Midi -> PSF -> OST)

Old post, though it bugs me no one ever addressed it.

Like FF7, the FF8 soundtrack was composed in MIDI (which I believe uses the Windows built-in synth in the PC versions for playback, though correct me if I'm wrong).  For the Playstation version of FF8, that MIDI was sequenced through a Roland SC-88 Sound module (primarily)....it's essentially a little box that contains a bunch of realistic instrument and percussion sounds.  So MIDI goes in, out comes realistic sounding music.  The playback from the SC-88 was then recorded in real time as raw CD-Audio.  Square mastered the raw audio for home CD players and sold it as the FF8 OST (http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VIII-Original-Soundtrack/dp/B00025E1TY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1408691304&sr=8-3&keywords=ff8+OST) . To make it fit into the PS1 discs along with the game, they had to remaster and compress it.  I believe this is what you refer to as PSF.

So R&W reinserts the higher quality OST into the PC version of the game.  Now, aside from the FF8 OST, there was another CD released around the same time called FITHOS LUSEC, WECOS, VINOSEC.  This is an orchestral studio recording....Square purchased studio time from I believe the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra (the CD doesn't credit them though I'm about 70% sure it's them) to record 13 tracks  from the game.  Square inserted 3 of these into the actual game itself ("Liberi Fatali" for the opening FMV, "Eyes on Me" and the "Ending Theme" on Disc 3 and 4).  R&W takes out the SC-88 recorded tracks and replaces them with the 10 remaining orchestral tracks....which are obviously much higher quality.

In addition, 2 choice tracks were included.  "Force Your Way" from The Black Mages album and "The Extreme" recorded by the Japanese indie group TAMusic for their FF Violin album  Both of these recordings use live professional musicians instead of the synthesized SC-88 sounds, and are widely regarded to be superior to their original OST counterparts which is why they're included.

Started lurking about a month ago when I realized I missed the deadline for the central cast auditions by about 3 weeks.....though after hearing audition samples from the incredible people who were ultimately picked, I realize my chances were a bit slim to begin with :-D.  Now I've finally created an account and would like to use my first post to say that I'm really excited for this project, and hope that I can become involved at some level or another!

Which brings me to my point.  Are you planning on doing another BTVA Casting Call for many of the "minor story roles"?:

IE. Ward, Kiros, Zone, Watts, Xu, Nida, Biggs, Wedge, Garden Faculty, General Caraway, President Deling, Headmaster Martine, Ma Dincht, Raine, Julia, Forest Fox Leader, Mayor Dobe, White SeeD Leader, Piet (Lunar Station), Young Squall (and everyone else from the orphanage).....

......Wow!  It's only after mulling over the script do I realize how many minor roles there actually are just in the main story dialogue...there are more than a dozen other roles that I didn't even name that have at least 5 lines of dialogue.  A lot of people are going to have something to do, I'm optimistic!

But yeah.....any idea on when that might be? Weeks, months?  Should I maybe send in a demo reel now?
