Is your resolution 640x480, 1280x960 or 1280x1024?

I've tried every resolution to no avail.

scaling on the other hand can be very taxing on low-end cards

I've never heard of anyone having problems with their hardware not coping with the mods. Then again, your GPU is prehistoric.

You should be able to easily run this with any $50, 512MB graphics card from newegg (or your county's equivalent); I've run the game flawlessly with the graphics overhaul in a laptop using a GeForce 9600M GT. I don't see your RAM being a problem, but maybe it would be better to upgrade that a little, if for no other reason than making your whole system run better. 2GB should do the trick.

Frankly, however, if your rig is that old you'd be better off building a completely new one. You can probably cannibalise your old HDD, RAM and case, so it would take less than $500 for you to build a system that will easily cope with the game and feel far more responsive.

Yeah that's the whole Idea   :D
Ive seen some of the fails on here about the ati cards. Just wondering about a headache free rig  :wink:
Motherboard,processor and Video card especially
with tax returns just around the corner the intention was to upgrade to something with less of an annoyance factor.
I love ff7 and really like what you guys have done here.

If it's running smoothly for you and it's not too much of an annoyance,I'd love to see what kind of setup you guys are running.

General discussion / Modding and hardware question
« on: 2011-02-10 20:02:23 »
 I'm running xp pro with a radeon 9800se. 1 gig of ram and to my dismay have found through numerous failed attempts that I can't run even half of the wonderful mods here.
 SO...
What I'd like is to know what hardware do I need to run them flawlessly?
In particular Team Avalanche's graphical overhaul with Aali's driver.
Unless anyone here has any Success stories with XP pro and ATI Radeon 9800SE...  then wth did you do?
If this has been covered already,multiple searches have found nothing on my end. (neither here nor Google)
Thank you in advance.

I can't express enough gratitude for this post.
Being quite inexperienced with mods,  I've been searching for a guide like this for awhile now.
Some of the Modders here  ( ...grateful to all of them) don't seem to be inclined to post instructions or include a read-me file, and some of the ones that do are abstract about it.
 Using the search funtion seems mostly to yield  mistakes others made when he/she had the nerve to ask questions like "What now?" in some cases ending with ...quit being a nuisance and Use the search function...  :o
  I've been pouring over the general section almost one topic at a time looking for clues.
glad it's over with.
If I had my usual, I'd tip my glass to you.  maybe later.  :wink:

I've done a clean install,got Aali's driver,Then the Low res, followed by the Gui.
The characters almost  show up fine but they are  missing eyes and mouths
and then there is everything else..it's checkerboards and lines. no buildings walls or floors just black and white rabble
Running winxp sp3 with Radeon 9800 SE  and my Monitor is capable of 1280X1024

if it helps here is my opengl.gfg

Code: [Select]
preserve_aspect = yes
fullscreen = yes

# mod directory
# subdirectroy of mods/ where textures will be loaded from
# does not affect the old external textures feature, those should still go in textures/
mod_path = avalanche

# check your driver settings if this option doesn't seem to work
enable_vsync = yes

# limit snowboard, coaster and highway minigames to refresh rate / 2, i.e. 30fps for a 60hz display mode
# vsync must be enabled and working for this to have any effect
minigame_framelimiter = on

# same thing, but for the battle swirl
battleswirl_framelimiter = off

# allow FF7 to use linear filtering for its textures
# some things look slightly better with this option on, but alot of textures just lose their detail
linear_filter = off

# plugin used to play music, the FF7Music plugin MUST be enabled for FF7Music to work.
# If no music plugin is loaded the game will play MIDI as usual but FF7Music will NOT work.
#music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp

## ENHANCEMENTS ##
## All the little extras that weren't part of the original game, default options include only trivial bug fixes.

# make all dialog boxes transparent, same effect as the transparent dialog boxes YAMP patch
transparent_dialogs = off

# allow max hp/mp to go over 9999, same effect as the YAMP patch by dziugo
break_9999limit = no

# include armor in magic defense calculation
mdef_fix = yes

# expand battle viewport to cover entire screen and make the battle menu transparent
new_battle_interface = off

# post-processing shader, used to apply fullscreen effects
post_source = shaders/bloom2.post
enable_postprocessing = no

## ADVANCED OPTIONS ##
## Don't fiddle with these unless you know what you're doing.

# use shaders, if available and supported
# turn shaders off to use the OpenGL 1.1 backend
use_shaders = yes

# prevent glitches due to rounding errors by rendering in the nearest (larger, if supported)
# multiple of the original resolution and up/down-scaling
prevent_rounding_errors = yes

# enable alpha blending for textures without an existing blending effect
fancy_transparency = on

# display frames per second counter in upper right corner
show_fps = no

# display some real-time debug information
show_stats = no

# store external textures in a compressed cache for increased performance
# compression is not lossless, some artifacts may appear when this option is in use
# texture cache does NOT update automatically if the source image changes, however, deleting anything from the cache
# will cause that file to be recreated from the source
compress_textures = yes

# replace FF7's default framelimiter timer source
use_new_timer = yes

# use a more stable (but less accurate) timer to control FF7's framelimiter
# this option has no effect unless the use_new_timer option is on
use_stable_timer = no

Ive tried it with and without compression and post processing with the same result.
see anything wrong here?

Did several reinstalls, Aali's, Gui and overhaul. then  updated my drivers and tweaked it the way it was supposed to be.
I need a new Graphics card I guess. Apparently ff7 doesn't like radeon 9800SE. I'm seeing no textures,or colors  .. field characters show up but not backgrounds and field are all black and white lines with squares
During encounters in the bombing mission  everything is like this with the exception of barret's weapon and the enemies  :-(  I give up

Past faves:  FF7,8,9,10 and to a lesser extent 6

Reasons:

choose who is in your party,

choose to do many side quests that are not just more battles

do puzzles sometimes

hunt for best weapons that you have a good chance of getting without the need for a guide

Miniquests that are fun and to find new secret areas

world map in 6,7,8,9

Use Summons in battle that actually help you out, and in X, use the summons as new battle characters.

Return to all areas of game, often for more quests or Monster hunts.

Traditional towns that break up the monotony

choose options in battle which are fully customised

select all allies in battle

use enemy skills or other game play elements in battle

Story and character development which is decent and for the most part well written

Ditto all that!
and I'd like to add to the above,The AAA 's of the summons.
The Aeon's Alchemy in X , including the gf Affinity and abilities from VIII

That option in the system panel to turn the music off.
The same battle music through 95% of any particular game irks me. http://forums.qhimm.com/Smileys/default/rolleyes.gif

The turn based style of play like in,1-10x2
I m probably old fashioned in this last one but I really enjoyed the strategies in dealing with the different enemy groups.
If I could change anything about them,It would be to have encounter load screens(with the exception of bossfights) shortened to somewhere around instantaneous.

That's all I can add right now.
